Where to Find the Best Pizzas in Portland and Beyond

"Pop Pizza’s square pies feel distinct from the deliciously maximalist pies at Ranch or the true-to-form Detroit found at Assembly Brewing; instead, owner Marius Pop approaches his pizzas with the eye of a pastry chef, which makes sense — Pop is known for his bakery, Nuvrei, with its rose croissants and various hues of macarons. The dough here is light and soft, just a touch sweet, with a consistent cheesy crunch baked into the edges. Toppings hew pretty traditional here, with standards like pepperoni and sausage." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden, Rebecca Roland

Pop pizza is the new spot on the block serving Detroit style pizza. Walking in you’re greeted with a compact seating area. There is pizza available by the slice as well as entire pies. We opted for the cheese, veggie, and Hawaiian (minus the meat). We wanted the triple cheese but apparently it had alcohol in it. The pizza was solid, with a great under carriage and fantastic crust. It had a good crisp as well. While the pineapple was great, the rest of the toppings were average. With our combo there was salads included which weren’t bad at all. We also had the cookie pie which was unfortunately a huge let down. Pricing was certainly on the higher end. Overall, I would certainly recommend trying this place as the pizza is solid. I think it may be better than ranch pizza (especially the crust). I would absolutely skip the cookie. It’s also unfortunate that ranch and hot honey costs extra. My feedback is for them to make an actual cookie with chocolate chips throughout instead of extremely sparse chocolate sprinkled in.

I came by here after stopping at CVS. I just wanted a quick slice as a snack and was glad that they sold by the slices. I had their Supreme slice. I liked that they warmed it up for me, but it did burn my pepperoni pieces slightly. The pizza slice was still good and I did like their base crust as it was nice and crispy.

Google
Oh yeah, this is the spot. Delicious, high quality toppings on a focaccia style crust. Perfect combination of crispy edges and soft on the inside. The arugula salad was top notch also. Will have to try their cookie next. By-the-slice option is always a plus. Service was great and the setting is lowkey - only downside would be fairly limited seating but we went on a rainy evening - maybe when it's sunny there are outdoor seating options. Highly recommend!

Google
First time I ever had "Detroit" style pizza so I didn't really have a baseline for comparison or authenticity but my wife and I really loved it. Dough was surprisingly airy and light while the edges were crispy and tasty AF. The red sauce, mozzarella, and pepperoni toppings were nicely balanced and everything came together wonderfully. Only downside is I normally save the pizza crust to give to the dogs but there's literally no crust on this pie and there's no way I'm not eating the crispy delicious edges! Sorry pups.

Google
Not great... 2.5/5 stars, but rounding down and you'll see why. Square pizzas on cracker-y crust. Very greasy. Veggie pizza had fun toppings at least. Disappointing overall. I will say I was hungry and ate it all, so it is passable if you're very hungry. But it's not something I'd recommend, you can pay similar prices for bigger better slices from Pizza Schmizza. Also the atmosphere isn't great but about what you'd expect from a shopping mall pizza place I guess. Oh and it's too cold in here!

Google
This place is heaven on earth. The pizza is incredible. I think what really makes it is the light, fluffy, crunchy crust. The mini pepperoni cups they use on their pies are great and allow for a perfect bite every time. The ratio of sauce/toppings/crust is perfect and the pizza itself has structural integrity. The sea salt chocolate chip cookie is also incredible and not to be missed. I recommend ordering the dinner combo (salad, pizza, & cookie) for a fair price and hefty amount of food. I hope this place stays open forever. 🙏

Google
Great food and service. This makes me not want to make my own pizza at home anymore :-) Supreme was no joke. Crust is a thicker, killer focaccia-like with a hint of cheese on the bottom. One pizza will feed an army. 10/10 will recommend.

Google
This place definitely gives off 50' pizza joint, and I love it. The pizza was pretty good and the crust had a good crisp. The sauce was light, not too thick, and flavorful. The only issue is that it is pretty greasy. The ceaser salad is ok, I didn't like the kale in it.

Yelp
I was craving pizza, while i mostly like thin crust i decided to got out on the limb and try this Detroit style square pizza at Pop Pizza Let me just say i was very pleasantly surprised, i tried the veggie square and sausage square ( drizzle of hot honey) . I really liked the focaccia crust , i think it made the difference with the flavorful toppings - definitely going to be back The service was excellent and very friendly

Yelp
Yeah, I don't know - maybe you don't have an appreciation for Detroit-style pizza out here, but I'm from Detroit and I've been eating it since the 1970's. So it's only fair that I should give it a try and render a verdict. So this is really, really close to the real, authentic style Detroit deep dish. The dough and the baked/burnt cheese crust is on point. But from that point, there are a few deviations. The classic authentic Detroit uses 100% brick cheese, which gives if a unique flavor profile. Apparently this is a mix of brick and mozz, so it's not quite the same. All the Detroit pies use a smooth red sauce on top of anything else on the pizza. It looks like the Pop cheese pizza duplicates this, but I was tempted by the photos of the pepperoni pizza on their website and it didn't disappoint. That style of pepperoni also deviates from classic Detroit, but it is definitely worthy. The sauce is a deviation - it's more of a fresh, simple tomato sauce that is not rendered down to smooth sauce. Very similar to the sauce you'll find on a chicago-style deep dish at Lou Malnati's in Chicago. Very different flavor profile than Detroit, but it was excellent. Since this was my first time here, I ordered ahead on my way from the airport to the hotel. But when I arrived, I discovered they had pizzas by the slice in a number of different combinations at the counter. This would be a good way to sample several of their offerings, so I may return later this week. The final verdict - it's not an authentic Detroit-style pizza, but Portland's take on Detroit. And you should give it a try if you haven't already. It's a high quality pie and a worthy effort to honor a tradition of Detroit.

Yelp
You are making all the right decisions if you are craving pizza and found Pop Pizza. The slices are delicious and they make a pepperoni pizza taste more than a traditional slice. The crust is the right amount of crunchy and moist without being too doughy. The salads though are surprisingly the star. The arugula salad is fresh and a good mix of textures and flavors. The Cesar dressing is also on point. The combo is where it's at.

Yelp
This is a decent spot if you want a quick and easy meal. They serve Detroit-style pizza by the slice or whole. Service is friendly and efficient, you order at the counter and they bring the order to your table, and also bus your table. I got the rabe--my favorite part was the mushroom confit, which they have on multiple different pizzas, I'd love it if they had a pizza with just mushrooms on it! It also comes with one slice of spicy coppa sausage (would like more), and a good amount of broccoli rabe, as well as Calabrian chilis added after they reheat it. It seemed like they tested it for a long time, but it was not that hot, it was just warm. The crust holds up great, it's nice and crunchy, not dense (which I think is a good thing. My dad got the Pop Supreme--even before they heat it up, the pepperoni was burned, so they only got more dried out and overcooked--I wonder if it would be better if pepperoni was put on after initial baking, but before the reheating, but maybe some people like it burned and crispy. The space is minimalist with high ceilings, it was cold on a chilly day, but I imagine it would be nice on a warm, sunny day.

Yelp
This is NOT Detroit style pizza. Not bad but I'll stick with exnovo. Clean place and good service.

Yelp
Pretty new spot in the area. Got two slices , they heated them up. You can go over to wildwood next door and they deliver. The pizzas were good I think it would have been better as fresh pie. It is a little on the spendier side for slices.

Yelp
Pizza, 7.8, only because it didn't have sauce on the top, so I wasn't sure what kind of pizza it is? If Detroit, where's the sauce? If not it's a great Sicilian. Salads, 9.1 both were delicious, all the individual ingredients came through, nice work. Service, 9.4 just right. Pizza came out hot. Salads didn't have servers thumb in the bowl, not chatty, but friendly. Clean tables and seats. Music was at a great level.

Yelp
Not at all what I expected in a joint with pizza in its name. First off it was more of a greasy crispy toast than any pizza I've eaten. The the rectangular slabs, they are thick and crunchy the toppings were unevenly dispersed and the cheese was liquid in places. Service as friendly and quick. The atmosphere was bland and sterile, not something you'd expect from their low health score of standards not met. I'm going to have to pass on a return visit because a greasy slab of crunchy toast with topping is not in anyway pizza in my book.

Yelp
Would return! Crunchy, delicious, filling. Would choose more regularly if it was closer to Hillsboro.

Yelp
Service was good. Ambiance was good. There was nothing special. Food was good. Nothing special. But good and decent.

Yelp
I ate at the Pop Pizza location on SE Morrison several times when I lived downtown. I loved their HH pizzas, probably the best bang for your buck in Portland. I was happy to see they opened a second location in the burbs. I ordered three different slices. My favorites were the pepperoni and supreme. I used to get an entire pepperoni pizza from their other location during HH for like $10. The cost for three slices was about $18. They were very good, but I'll probably stick to ordering whole pies going forward as it's more economical.

Yelp
I ordered some salad and pizzas to go from the new Cedar Mill location! The caesar salad was honestly one of the best caesar salads I have ever had. The dressing was delicious. The pizza was good, nothing out of this world. Unlike a lot of detroit style pizzas I have had before, I could pick this one up and eat it versus needing to cut it with a fork and knife. Which meant the sauce and toppings were more minimal. I was bummed that I wasn't able to get the truffle pizza as a slice, so I opted for a pepperoni. Service was fast. Ambiance was clean, simple, and cute.

Yelp
Just really really good. 'Nuff said... Ok. Fine. They need 85 characters but I didn't to make my point ;)

Yelp
I tried this place on Sunday. The pizza was great! The crust was crispy on the outside and soft and tasty on the inside. There was hot melted cheese, just the right spicy I the sauce and generous amount of pepperoni. Staff was very friendly explaining about what we could get, by the piece, whole pie or half and half. Bonus was the tap house next door where we waited for the pie to be cooked. When the pizza was done, they brought it to us! We will be back.

Yelp
Stopped in for the first time for a couple of slices to go. Just got two slices of cheese. Really good flavor. Thicker focaccia style but lighter. Crunchy crust. I love a good pizza and the square shape was a special touch. Sauce was very flavorful and perfect amount. I'm already craving my next visit, this time I whole pie.

J S.

Yelp
This is a different style of pizza. They say it's Detroit style so it's cut square and has a thick crust underneath it. The flavors were nice and they were very helpful inside in terms of picking out what to order. I plan on going back.

Yelp
Used to go to the original spot on Hawthorn all the time. Best pizza in Portland. Super happy to have them in Cedar Mill. Bonus point for installing a pizza door between their spot and Wildwood Tap house next door. Genius move. Their online ordering always seems to be down. Hopefully that is resolved soon.

Yelp
We ordered takeout on a Friday night. I didn't read any reviews, had no expectations. We are always looking for new and good near us. Pops didn't disappoint, but we ordered twice as much food as we needed to. Both pizzas were amazing--the kitchen sink and the chipotle chicken. My first time eating a Detroit style pizza, and as a thin crust lover I was skeptical. We put slices in a 400 degree oven for a couple of minutes before eating--crispy and chewy, loaded with topping. Just do it!

Luis Z.

Yelp
Pizza is mediocre. The time of service is all over the place they open when they want and close when they want. It's honestly very upsetting the establishment is a joke and so is the management.

Chris B.

Yelp
Great pizza and the staff is so helpful! They make every effort to create a perfect experience!

Mike V.

Yelp
I tried ordering online. I waited 25 minutes before completing the order, but Apple Pay said it went through. When I got there they had no history of my order, and I never received an email or text. My fault for waiting too long to finish my order. They were totally cool and put my order in again. I'm really impressed with their customer service. It only took 15 minutes since they were coming off the dinner rush.

Jason M.

Yelp
Pizza was delicious!! Crust is very different and very good!! The family loved it too - we'll definitely be back!

Alex H.

Yelp
I typically go to this place one a month. I like the quality of their pizza and typically the deals are in line with other premium pizzas.

Patrick M.

Yelp
Good pizza, nice to be able to get a slice or two as the full pizza price is a bit more than I want to pay but it's good pizza. Wish they did gluten free by the slice...

Glenn D.

Yelp
I bought a whole pizza and had it delivered. The toppings were great and I think the crust could've been OK as well. But unless you're a big fan of balsamic vinegar, I would stay 1,000,000 miles away from this place. the balsamic vinegar absolutely ruined it I threw most of it away.

Damon S.

Yelp
Overpriced. Sorry their business plan requires these kind of prices. Maybe they thought the neighborhood justified these prices. Reality is you can make this at home for a fraction of that price including drinks and dessert.

Long T.

Yelp
Deep dish pizza, Detroit style. A lot of interesting flavors and service was good and fast.

Alex C.

Yelp
Exciting to try a new place in the area, however... I would give it some time until they can figure out a better system. We've been waiting over an hour to pick up our to-go order and still have not received our food nor have they communicated a more accurate updated time for when our food will be ready. I understand that they're new so I'd be willing to give them another chance, but not for a long time... maybe if they offered a coupon or something for the inconvenience, I'd be more inclined to return sooner. Papa Murphy's is across the street as a back up option and their timing is actually accurate. No photo to show of our food since we never received it.
