Where to Find Detroit-Style and Sicilian Square Pizzas in Portland | Eater Portland

"The inside of this Buckman spot looks like a factory assembly line, with mountainous stacks of brightly logo-ed pizza boxes and a counter covered with small plastic containers of sauces and dressings. It’s fitting design for a place that pulls inspiration from the ultimate factory town: Detroit. Pop’s crust is light in the middle and crunchy on the bottom, with the Detroit signature crunchy cheese around the sides. Fresh salads and chewy squares of chocolate chip cookies go well before and after a pizza." - Rachel Pinsky

Where to Find the Cheesiest Dishes in Portland and Beyond | Eater Portland

"The debate over which type of pizza reigns supreme will never be over, but one thing is for sure: Detroit-style square pizzas are having a moment. Pop Pizza opened up last year to join Ranch, Assembly Brewing, Ex Novo, and more as purveyors of these thick slabs of dough and cheese. Located in a lofty, industrial-chic dining area on SE Morrison, Pop Pizza’s aesthetics are as good as the pizzas. The sturdy squares are supported by a crunchy cheese crust, with the interior packed to the brim with a blend of cheddar, Wisconsin Brick, and mozzarella cheese. Toppings include classics like pepperoni and spicy Italian sausage, or more divisive ones like ham and pineapple. Keep an eye on the restaurant’s Instagram page for periodic collaborations with other restaurants and chefs; for example, the restaurant’s collaboration with Han Oak owners Sun Young Park and Peter Cho — a cheesy pie laden with kimchi, pickles, and pepperoni — was inspired by Park’s pregnancy cravings." - Zoe Baillargeon

Google
I've had Pop Pizza on my list to try since before COVID because I had heard good reviews from people. But Pop closed shop right away during the pandemic. I recently learned they were baking pies again. They still have the dining area blocked off so I ordered four pizzas to go. The pizza is quality but Ruse Crust Collective has spoiled me on Detroit style pies. This guy needs more flavor. If you like mild polite pizza you'll like it. Check out my profile for more great eateries and craft cocktail bars. -VanPort Insider.

Yelp
Man, this place is amazing. Came in looking for some pizza since I was around the neighborhood and I really hit the jackpot in terms of Detroit style pizza. Looking over the menu, I ordered a sausage pizza and it was ready in about 10 min from ordering. As other's have said, this is some of the best pizza crust I've ever had. Thick and bready like focaccia and crispy flavor bombs all around the outside crust. Perfect amount of cheese that was just perfectly melty. While I do wish they have different sizes, and the price is a bit off putting ($20+ for 8 slices), it's just too dang good. I will be back.

Yelp
Truly amazing pizza. Perfect flavor and texture. Make sure you hit their Sunday happy hour

Yelp
This business doesn't communicate to customers what's going on. That's just bad business practice. I guess they don't want our money. Bummer.

Yelp
Pop Pizza, you are so fabulous I find myself daydreaming about your heavenly crust. I mean, soooo good. At Pop the toppings, sauce, and cheese are delectable, my favorite being the Pineapple Pizza: Canadian bacon, pineapple, jalapeño, mozzarella, Wisconsin brick, cheddar, red sauce. This is my favorite toppings combo I have ever had anywhere! While the toppings are incredible the crust is where I'm brought to a level of fantasizing about my next bite. Detroit style, soft/chewy and airy like the best fresh out of the oven focaccia bread in the center, crispy and lightly fried with olive oil on the outside while somehow not being greasy... mmmmmmmmm.

Yelp
Can I give two different sets of stars, one for the food and one for the predictability of when a restaurant can be open? Because if so, 5 stars for the pizza and 2 stars for hours and days of operation, which are as about predictable as the zig zag course of the substance addled denizens of downtown streets, that I frequently find myself dodging in traffic these days. Is this place closed? Are they short staffed and just unable to open sometimes? Are the owners on a vacation in Mexico that was extended due to a cartel related kidnapping? Are they sick? Who knows, but whatever the cause, I hope they are well because they really do make a fine Detroit style pizza that I guarantee would have more fans if they were open consistently. I miss their airy yet simultaneously crispy, chewy crust with its crispy edges of delicious baked cheese, and those cute, button sized thick cuts of pepperoni that become little cups of spicy cured meat oil. *sigh* oh well, maybe they will be back again some day, one can only hope.

Yelp
The pizza is really good and the happy hour deal is amazing. But it is very frustrating when you don't know if they are open or not. Several times I have tried to order online or go in and they are closed without notice. I see some of the other reviews have said the same. If you are going to close just let people know! Post it on your website, leave a message on the phone, update the Google hours, something please!

Yelp
I found my favorite style and pizza shop in Portland. Unfortunately there's no indoor dining but the pizza is still good when you bring it home to eat. My favorite is the ratio of crust, minimal sauce and good amount of cheese. They also give you extra sauce on the side. I'm not a big fan of pizza sauce but their sauce is the best and I appreciate the extra sauce on the side. Their ranch dipping sauce is quite delectable as well.

Yelp
IS POP PIZZA EVER OPEN???? This is my favorite pizza in all of Portland yet it is never open, I have tried to order for over a month and their website says everything is out of stock, you call and it's just a looped recording in which you can not speak to a staff member.
google avatar

Kayla M.

Yelp
This was the pizza place Portland needed. Detroit style pizza with the most perfect pepperoni cups and buttery crust.
google avatar

Heath K.

Yelp
This place has awesome pizza and is a great value. So why the two stars? It's one of the most frustratingly run restaurants I've ever seen. You can't reach them on the phone. Sometimes they're just closed with no indication anywhere that would be the case. The only way you know is that the online ordering says "out of stock" on everything. So does that means they haven't turned it on yet or they're inexplicably closed? It's anybody's guess! They could just say on IG or their website when they are going to be closed, but they haven't posted to IG since May. So yeah... I really like their food when I can get it, but it's not something you can count on. Please Pop step up the communication for people that want to be regular customers!

Yelp
Sunday happy hour from 4-5 is the way to go. Love the crunchy crust and they have the best gluten free pizza in town!
google avatar

Annie H.

Yelp
This pizza really hit the spot. Ordered one on Sunday during their happy hour. Great deal! It's the only time I was able to justify spending money on Pop Pizza. However, after eating it, I think it's worth the full price. Love how thin the crust is! The focaccia bread base is fluffy and the ranch they sell is so creamy. Definitely one of the top three ranches I've had at a pizza shop.
google avatar

Yelp
Being gluten free and loving pizza, I am always on the search for the best gluten free pizza, both near and far. While pet sitting, I found pop pizza on door dash and boy howdy and I glad that I did! The gluten free crust is in my top two on the west coast, and top three of all time. It was so good, I had it twice in one week! Even my gluten eating boyfriend couldn't believe how amazing it tasted! Bonus points for the free crayons to color the pizza box! Their side of ranch is quite delicious as well. I will definitely be eating pop's pizza again.

Yelp
8/10 experience & taste of pizza! The concept of takeout is interesting how we came up to the table, ordered and then waited to grab our pizza and go. It was however, done in a timely way. The lady at the table was very kind. This was unlike any other pizza I've tried and to make it better, it was in a rectangle shape :) !! The crust was thick, crunchy and pretty bread-like. Because the bread is so thick I feel like the proportion to the toppings to crust is kind of off which is why I rate it a 8/10 pizza experience. Nonetheless it was indeed a tasty crust. We got the gluten free veggie pizza, sausage pizza, and a Hawaiian pizza. All were tasty but my favorite was the sausage one. The ranch also tasted a good hearty and not a fake tasting kind.
google avatar

Ab Z.

Yelp
The gluten free pizza is legit. Doesn't taste like dry cardboard like most pizza places offer as a gf option. I like the cute boxes they come in too, definitely think a little kid would be psyched to color them in. I do wish the gluten free pizza was bigger! It's pretty small for the price. Sigh, but i will continue to get it.

Yelp
You know, for my review #1000, of course I'm going to talk pizza, because pizza. Now Detroit style pizza is a new one to me. I'm not quite sure what makes it "Detroit" style, but it sure was damn tasty and it only required two slices to fill me up. Maybe the Wisconsin brick cheese? Maybe square pizza? I mean it was Sicilian but not as thick, but the crust was caramelized and crispy. The dozens and dozens of mini pepperonis had crunch and were oh so good. And it was super cheesy. All yum in my book. Pop Pizza opened during all of this craziness and yet when I was picking up food this past Friday night (3rd party delivery) there was a serious line of people waiting there. So they are putting out a really good product and doing this right across the street from Pizza Jerk, which also makes a pretty decent pizza. I was chatting with a few people on line and most all were repeat customers. The neighborhood likes them, and the people were also well versed on many of the other upper pizza spots in town. Each place has it's own positives. What may be my favorite, might not be someone else's. But they all agreed that they enjoy the newness of Pop. All I know is that I'll be back for more, hopefully soon. They have restricted hours and days that they are open, so make sure to look them up prior to going, and it's probably better to order through their website or do it through third party delivery if you are staying in. Enjoy, and support local... Here's to the next 1000 reviews (I should be so lucky.)

Yelp
So I guess this is the new Portland hotness. Raved about by a nurse at my hospital so I had to check it. First thing first-- if we're competing (as other reviewers have done), I'm team ranch pdx ;) I just think their flavors are better. Secondly, this place has to figure out their wait time situation. Our pizza wasn't ready until 25 minutes after they said it would be ready.. and we were lucky as some people were waiting more than 45 minutes after their order was supposed to ready. This alone is enough to deter me from going back. Now to the actual pizza-- it's good! The crust is like all cheese baked to a crispy crunch. We got the sausage mushroom pizza. It came with this spicy honey to dip, which was really interesting. Basil on top brought a freshness to the slice as well. This place is good, but I'm not sure I loved it enough to go back as the wait times are a little outrageous right now.

Yelp
We desperately need a good pizza joint in Cedar Mill, and this review is for the new location in Cedar Mill. Never been to any other Pop Pizza's in town, so not sure what to expect. The Cedar Mill location is MEH. We got overly excited and was let down with disappointment. The pizza is light, airy, spongy and small for the price. It reminds me of focaccia bread. The tomato sauce is ok, not as fresh as I would expect it to be. The tomato sauce comes out of a can from supposedly Italy. Most of the toppings come out of a can. The business seems to be working in partnership with the tap house next door as they have a small window between the walls to drop food for the taphouse to pickup. So, the pizza is nothing special and is just pub food. Overall, it's great if you want your pub food with your beer next door since the tap house does not offer food. The pizza is expensive for ingredients that come out of a can and the size is small. For $27 a pizza + tip ($30 plus), you get 8 slices and the size is too small to feed a family. I would describe it as an expensive focaccia bread. For cheaper, you can go to the bakery for focaccia bread and put tomato sauce and mozzarella if you want the same quality. I would prefer if the owner supports local businesses with local ingredients for this price point. Maybe even make the pizza a little bigger for families. If you want good quality pizza in the neighborhood, go elsewhere. Go back to Pizzicato on Cornell or better yet, Maiale Rosa Pizza in downtown Beaverton. I will not come back again.

Yelp
Wonderful pizza shop for thick crust pizza with a nice cheese crunch on the sides. Parking in belmont is tough but if you make the trek out here get a box or two to make it worth! Pop has pretty standard pizza flavors with the occasional kale pizza if you're feeling healthy. They also have gluten free versions of their flavors for you to order. The pizza here is super light and airy but still maintains a great crunch. Ingredients are a plenty but not too stuffed that the balance is off. Worth checking out if you want a change and want something you can really bite into.
google avatar

Heidi W.

Yelp
one of the best gluten free pizzas i've ever had. must get the sides of calabrian chiles and ranch.
google avatar

Alex B.

Yelp
The bread is the best part, and they never skimp on toppings, what more could you ask for? Plus its not expensive. Pizza's like this go for $10 more at other spots and this is just as good. The man who opened this is one of the best bakers in Oregon and it shows in the bread. Consistency is one of the most important parts of a restaurant and my pizza is the same quality every time, can't beat that.
google avatar

Andrus H.

Yelp
AMAZING GLUTEN FREE PIZZA! What I love about this pizza is it's good when it's hot out of the oven and just as good the next day cold. The texture of the crust is so light and chewy, unlike many other pizza crusts that can mimic cardboard. On top of that there is something special about their ranch... an absolute necessity! Their staff is super friendly and they get you your pizza quick! Thank you Pop Pizza for allowing me to try my first Detroit style pizza!
google avatar

Zoe B.

Yelp
Hands down best pineapple/Hawaiian pizza. I tried the gluten free crust which was so chewy and crunchy and has cheese crusted on the sides. The ham is high quality and the jalapeño has a surprising kick that balances the sweetness of the pineapple. Highly recommend this place. Was so good we ordered a second pizza.
google avatar

Nathanial G.

Yelp
I found pop on Instagram. I love thick crust pizza and Detroit style usually falls right into that. Every human I interacted with at pop was kind, quick and friendly. The happy hour or whatever on Sunday is a great price - this pizza is worth trying at that price. That said, I found this pizza to be lacking any sense of self-identity. The dough was... kinda just there. The cheese alternated being being cheese and a brown film. The pepperoni has some spice, but it's the only actual flavor that comes out in my experience of the pizza and on the whole, very underwhelming. We also got the cookies! They were good, but had similar problems. They are best warm. All-in-all, I probably won't return here, but at $10 for a pizza, it's worth a shot. This pizza fed me, my mother in law, my wife and my daughter (granted, she's one and eats like two bites then wants her milk or whatever).
google avatar

Pepper E.

Yelp
Got the DIY pizza with pepperoni. It seems expensive but they give you so much cheese and pepperoni! Also included is flour and olive oil. The only thing is that I had no idea this was a 2-3 hour process to let the dough rise. But we did it and it was great. I tried another pizza and it just wasn't the same.
google avatar

Joshua E.

Yelp
The pizza here is actually quite good, but it is hands down the worst run and most frustrating restaurant experiences I have ever had.
google avatar

Brian B.

Yelp
Really great pizza and friendly staff! I think like all places right now they might be struggling with having enough staff - so give them a break if it takes a little. Get the ranch it's also amazing!
google avatar

Happyvduck R.

Yelp
Frankly we were underwhelmed by the meager toppings on a small framed pizza. If this was a 10 to 12 dollar pie great. $22 or close to $3 a square is far from honest value. Plus don't offer parmesan or chili flakes. Crust is great.
google avatar

Seth D.

Yelp
The photo of their Pepperoni pizza caught my eye since it reminded me of my favorite pizza ever: New York's Prince Street Pizza. Read a quick review online and gave it a chance. Pickup experience was smooth and on time. Pepperoni pizza was everything one could desire in a pizza. Crisp, chewy, fluffy, not too much salt, everything dialed in just right. Everyone agreed this was Better than Prince, possibly the best pizza we have ever had. I
google avatar

Sean E.

Yelp
Worst manager I've ever encountered. Asked me if I was meditating as I was being yelled at spoken down to. This business won't last. Don't waste your time funding a poorly managed restaurant. Check out Apizza Scholls, Sizzle Pie, or Straight From New York. Enjoy Portland, but keep this dump off your list.
google avatar

Yelp
I was so excited that another Detroit style pizza place opened in Portland! It certainly can't be easy opening a new restaurant during a pandemic but that didn't stop Pop Pizza from delivering delicious squares in a safe manner. We got the sausage pizza and it was everything! I didn't realize that their crust has cheese cooked into it and my goodness--what a game changer. Why doesn't every pizza place make their crusts like this?? You get 6 large squares which was enough for 2 meals between me and my boyfriend though we did have a salad on the side as well. You definitely get your money's worth! Give these guys a try, you won't regret it. I'm already looking forward to my next visit and trying their pepperoni pizza.
google avatar

Tiffany H.

Yelp
This is the first pizza place in town that both of my kids ate, so they get a big thumbs up from my kiddos! My older son is incredibly picky and ate the pizza I gave him and asked for more which was shocking. For that reason alone, we'll order Pop again! The crust was really tasty and we enjoyed the amount of sauce and cheese, and the kids liked the pepperoni. The online ordering was convenient but we showed up at the time listed for our pickup and waited almost 15 minutes past the time though we were the only people there. Hopefully the timing gets ironed out, because otherwise it was a great experience.
google avatar

Kate O.

Yelp
This is my first ever Detroit-style pizza, and normally I am New York/Neapolitan thin crust pizza kind of girl. However, I enjoyed this style of pizza more than expected. I got a cheese pizza with fresh basil on top. First impression: tasted like focaccia with pizza toppings, which isn't necessarily bad because I love focaccia. I thought the body of the pizza was good, but nothing very special, but then the crust. THE CRUST IS AMAZING! It's crispy with cheese and incredible. If the whole pizza was crust, I'd be here all the time. Maybe the best crust in Portland. I don't know if I'm converted to thicker crust pizzas, but I would absolutely come back if in the area, and especially after some beer at Modern Times really close by. This would be great drunk food, and it's in a good spot for it. This pizza also reheats really well in the oven.
google avatar

Alli S.

Yelp
I ordered this from doordash and my pizza was still warm! This pizza is soo good. This will definitely be my new pizza spot. We also had the Cesar salad and chocolate chip cookie and it was delicious! Highly recommend.

Yelp
We usually make our own pizza on Fridays, but we were out of flour so we popped over to Instagram to see if there was anything new and noteworthy to try. After drooling over their Instagram, we decided to give this place a shot. I don't usually love Detroit style pizza, but I figured I needed to give it another go. We placed our order online and showed up at the storefront for pick-up. It was super easy, everything was open, efficient, and the ladies at the front were very friendly. I also loved the branding and the inside looked cute too. The pizza smelled so good on the ride home, I could barely stand it. We all dug in immediately upon entering the house. The crust had a beautiful crunch to it. It was thick, but also still light and didn't leave me feeling weighed down all night. I didn't love the cheese blend, the cheddar threw me a bit, but I think that's a personal preference. My husband and daughter both loved it and devoured their slices. I think next time I would try to the sausage, we went with the plain cheese to test the original. I don't know that it changed my opinion on Detroit style pizza, but I'm glad I tried it! I appreciate that there's another option in town for pizza and props to anyone who opens a business during the pandemic!
google avatar

Yelp
I was first introduced to Detroit style pizza in Austin,TX at Via 313. I was obsessed. When we moved back to Portland, we had a try at Ranch PDX and it was good, but still didn't compare. When I heard about a new Detroit style pizza opening up, I had to try it ASAP! My husband and I easily placed our order for a Pepperoni pie online, waited about 10 minutes at their pickup window, and made our way back home. First bite, YUM. Second bite, WOW. Third bite, GONE. The crust is so flavorful and crunchy. It was so delicious. I'm sitting here now, a day later, and still thinking about it. If you're debating, give it a try. Can't wait to go back and I hope them come out with some type of cheesy bread next! (Didn't even have a chance to take a photo beforehand since we were too busy chowing down.)

Yelp
My brother had a pizza night at his house and ordered from Pop Pizza. I went in with 0 expectations and no idea of what I was about to get into, but immediately after leaving his place we ordered more to pick up on the way home. We had the sausage pizza and pineapple pizza, no alterations, and both had just the right amount of toppings, cheese, and sauce. The edges have the crispy crunchy burnt cheesey deliciousness, and the crust is this chewy crunchy perfection. I ate some for dinner, some more for a midnight snack, leftovers for lunch... and I'm still thinking about having another slice. This pizza reheats super well too. And you can't forget the cookies! I didn't even want to try them because of how desserts usually taste from pizza places, but their cookies are uh. Maze. Ing. Sprinkled with flakes sea salt, just the right amount of semi sweet chocolate, and chewy perfection. This place is delicious!
google avatar

Christine H.

Yelp
If I could give six stars I would! One for each piece. Do yourself a favor... log on order it for pick up ... bring your fave drinks and picnic in your car. This is our second one this week shhhhhhhh
google avatar

Dina E.

Yelp
My partner always orders Pop when we are starving and need pizza. They never disappoint. It's like a Detroit style semi deep dish pizza. Filling and tasty!! Love the sauce. They serve it w a side of warm marinara too (thank you for it being warm!!!!). The crust is nice and crunchy but bouncy, too. I've never tried their salads or gluten free pies but will next time. We usually stick to pepperoni. They are super super quick. I think it's because they don't do substitutions. Highly recommend if you want that chonky pizza, quick.
google avatar

Travis T.

Yelp
4.5 stars, rounded up. Excited that more Detroit style pizza has come to Portland. Pop is probably the 2nd best Detroit style pizza I've had. I ordered the pepperoni. Light and buttery crust reminiscent of Pizza Hut pan pizza. Good flavor on the 3 cheese blend, especially on the caramelized edges. Sauce doesn't have much flavor, but adds a necessary lubricant. Love the crispy cup pepperonis. I'm sure I will have horrible heartburn tonight from the grease, but it was worth it.
google avatar

Alex O.

Yelp
This was actually my first time trying Detroit style pizza. Sauce was flavorful, good amount of cheese, and that crispy cheesy crust edge is PHENOMENAL. Maybe the best crust I've had in Portland! Ordering online was super easy, and they've got a nice pick-up window for use during the COVID era, so you don't even have to worry about going inside. Excited to come back and pick up a pie after a night at Modern Times or Loyal Legion in the future.
google avatar

Rouxster P.

Yelp
The dough/ crust is really the star here. I was once a ny pizza style purist but this is elevated baking. There is a perfect contrast in textures: the crunch of the exterior, the airy, pillowy interior. Then the tang of the sauce. Just really satisfying pizza.
google avatar

liamrh y.

Yelp
It's good pizza. However their front of house can be a wreck. I ordered and showed up to pickup like instructed. They told me "8 more minutes". I waited ten and inquired. They told me "15 more minutes". What happened? The expediter/prep sold our order to someone else. Down vote
google avatar

John B.

Yelp
This is the best pizza I have ever had in Portland. Mind BLOWING! I am a pizza freak, and never met a pizza I didn't like, but I've only fallen in LOVE with Pop Pizza and Lou Malnati's in Chicago. Pop Pizza is much closer. Stay away! It's mine! It's all mine!
google avatar

Christina C.

Yelp
Pop Pizza is so delicious! We ordered online and picked up within 20 minutes. It was our first time ordering from here and we got the veggie pizza (blend of cheeses, mushroom, red onion, bell peppers, olives and red sauce) with sausages. The outer pizza was crispy, cheesy, and buttery. The toppings on the pizza was the perfect ratio with the pizza itself. Super quality pizza!
google avatar

Tiffany G.

Yelp
My husband is always on the lookout for Detroit style pizza. In town for the night we opted for a pepperoni pizza to bring back to our room. Pop pizza nailed his expectations. Great crunch to the cheesey, crispy crust, perfectly curled pepperoni and sauce was seasoned well. If they had been open an hour earlier today we would have ordered another one to drive home with us to Tacoma.
google avatar

TVAT T.

Yelp
Hands down BEST pizza in the PNW. Thick focaccia crust with top notch ingredients. One pizza alone lasts me for days--worth every penny and made it my weekly take-out. Would love to see one open up closer to me on the Westside ;)
google avatar

Devin V.

Yelp
So good! I'm always impressed when I can find a thick cut pizza in town! We tried out the veggie + pepperoni, both gluten free versions. I love that they offer this. I've had a few unimpressive gluten free doughs before, but this one was incredible! To be honest we only went with the gluten free bc they were sold out of the other versions, but I was super impressed. Each pizza is cut into four square slices. It lasted us two meals each. Be sure to account for extra time to eat, that thick crust is delicious! Bread is everything in my pizza selection, the burnt cheesy crust, great toppings. Only other thing was there wasn't too much sauce on the veggie, but otherwise a perfect first experience! I can't wait to try them again soon!
google avatar

Brienne H.

Yelp
I ordered the sausage pizza through caviar and they gave me a large cup of complimentary honey and basil to go along with the pizza. The pizza was the Detroit style I love with the crispy edges and soft center and all toppings tasted fresh. I added a cup of ranch which tasted homemade and was also really good.. will be ordering again when I'm in the mood for a deep dish Detroit style crust!

Dani H.

Yelp
I love this pizza place but my last order was sad. I guess they're doing shrink-flation too because the dough was flat. It wasn't their best pizza and it was annoying because they are pricer too. Hopefully the next time I buy the next round of pizza it's not too small or flat.
