The Brief and Magical History of Fast-Food Buffets | Eater

"Promoted locally as an almost unbelievable novelty — celebrated in local coverage as the 'only' buffet of its kind and treated like carnival‑barker news — this location has the feel of a regional oddity that locals speak of as mythical. The coverage and chatter present it as an extraordinary, improbable outpost where a national fried‑chicken chain’s offerings are presented in all‑you‑can‑eat format, inspiring both disbelief and enthusiasm among residents." - MM Carrigan

I just ordered two wraps, pulled around to wait, and this is what they gave me. Less than half of a chicken strip and both my wraps are soggy and cold. What was the point of making me wait if you were giving me cold food with nobody else inside or in the drive through? I just threw this junk in the garbage, not even edible. I would say at least the second one at least has two tenders, right? But they’re both ice cold, thin and rubbery, like they were over-cooked and sitting for an hour. Im not exaggerating; i fry chicken for a living. This really killed my night popeyes. I don’t recommend anyone to go here.

Lucas Lalonde

Google
This "wrap" was about $4. Inside had a 5 gallon bucket half full of some yellowish water next to the food prep area to catch multiple leaks from the ceiling. This place is a food safety violation nightmare. At least the staff was nice. Zero reason to eat here when there are so many great local restaurants.

Google
Just don’t even waste yall time coming to this Popeyes , I’ve been a faithful customer for years because they are right across from my job in the oil center and last week had me wait over 45 minutes for a chicken sandwich then when I got it , it was cold because they said they forgot to bring it out to me. Today I get a big box in the drive through , I’ve now been waiting parked in front for 20 minutes , mind you this they told me it would be right out. Oh and yesterday my boss got the office food from here and when we opened the Cajun rice it smelled so spoiled I came over here and had the cashier smell she looked at me apologized and started throwing all the rice dressing away.

Google
Really dirty place to eat there, the counter was empty, no spoons or forks, bad customer service, I inserted my card to make the payment and the girl just left and left us waiting, she didn't give us our glasses for the drinks... only the food is okay.

Google
I never thought I would have been at this location again! The last time I went there, a few years ago, it was a mess!! I recently went to the location because I was in the area and everything looked so different! Ms. Kelsey is doing an amazing job at this location. The store was spotless and the food was fresh! I will definitely be making my way back to eat again!!!

Lo Thibx

Google
I ordered three wings, a small red beans and a drink. The wings were huge fried perfectly and spicy like I ordered. I was surprised and very grateful. The red beans are my favorite. I just wish we could get a whole container of beans with no rice. The drink Diet Coke was crispy. I will be back. I was very impressed and the staff was very nice.

Google
This might be the worst Popeyes in southern Louisiana. Such a prime location wasted by poor staffing and training, lack of process, and a thorough "I don't wanna be here" attitude. I won't be back and I'll encourage everyone I know to skip it.

Busy Bee

Google
Just left there. My sides are spoiled. Smells and taste horrible. This location needs to be shut down.

Letherica W.

Yelp
the Spicy chicken was hot and fresh!! very friendly and well mannered workers! the price was great for 3pc

Yelp
I have visited three Popeyes in and around the Lafayette and Broussard area. They all have horrible service and my order from all three were wrong. The don't know the difference between dark meat and white meat, they cannot follow simple instructions like no pickles. They ask you if you want a meal and you say no, I only want 4 pieces of dark meet and a chicken sandwich with no pickles and you some how get a drink and side order in your bag. Not one of these locations got it right. I have tried to have them correct my order only to be met with attitude. If you don't like your job, please do everyone a favor and work elsewhere. A smile and courtesy goes a long way even if the order is wrong. I guess I will stick with Canes when I want chicken.

Donna M.

Yelp
I was shocked went to Popeyes in monroe Ohio . Ordered meals with unsweet tea since we are diabetic! And was told sweetener is not in their budget! How , when you charge 2 to 3 dollars for a cup of water with a penny tea bag in it but can't supply sweetener. Discrimination!

Michelle B.

Yelp
The one located on Willow St. said the $6 box is discontinued and we saw it on tv last night. So we left and went to the one on Pinhook Rd. and we waited and waited and finally someone asked us if she could help. Well even though they are advertising it they don't have it. So we went back out to the care to get some coupons and came back in, someone was in line so we got behind her and they made that lady wait and wait then they were very rude and they just don't want to work at Popeyes It's time for Popeyes to hire a whole new crew at both locations because all they have is rude people that really don't want to work.

Jacob B.

Yelp
Always slow and god forbid THEY get your order wrong and you ask them to exchange it. the manger was on her phone the entire time I was in there (which was 20 minutes) just to order to go. It seems the only qualification you need to work here is a heart beat. They make putting chicken in a box look like a complicated job.

Kayleb L.

Yelp
All my food was hot and the strawberry shortcake and biscuits are off the table bby the best

Don R.

Yelp
Service is pathetic!! Went into lobby and no one waited on me or gave me any heads up that while there are 6 people walking around behind the counter the person that takes orders at the front counter is in the bathroom and no one else can take your order. I'm pro business but I hope this Popeyes closes down because no one there cares about any part of the business.

Yelp
This Popeye's location is unique in that it has an all-you-can-eat buffet! The items on the buffet consist of the most popular items the fast food chain offers: spicy or mild chicken, biscuits, coleslaw, mashed potatoes, Cajun gravy, red beans and rice, dirty rice, green beans, macaroni and cheese, and chicken livers. The buffet does not include a drink and is sold separately. They serve Coca-Cola products at Popeye's, as well as Community brand iced tea. The buffet line is a little bit awkward: customers order and pay on one end of the line, and then go to the other end to pick up a styrofoam plate and begin self service. As with most fast food restaurants, service quality varies and there is a lot of turnover with the workers: on some visits, the employees are friendly and cheerful; but I have also visited on days where the staff is just vile. Unlike other Popeye's locations, the only condiments available here are ketchup, salt, and pepper. No hot sauce, no honey, no jelly. There is no WiFi, but there are plenty of standard power plugs in the dining area. A new styrofoam plate is required for additional helpings from the buffet. This produces a lot of waste and the trash bins are always full to overflowing every time I have visited. Overall a good place to stop by if you are in Lafayette and need a quick and hearty meal. At the end of the day, this is still fast food, but all-you-can-eat of it!

Rachel S.

Yelp
incompetent. Terrible at drive through. Waited 15 mins for her to say she's still not ready. Need people who wanna work. Just horrible service.

Yelp
Do you love Popeyes but want to gorge on just spicy thighs or legs or mild breasts without having to pay extra for that privilege? Is it difficult to choose between the savory red beans, cheesy Mac and cheese or the dirty rice as your one side? What if you just decided one biscuit wasn't enough. Well this is your lucky day! The last standing Popeye's Buffet in the United States and possibly the world! It's not just for buffet you can still order your usual combos and meals to go or to eat in, which for me is a plus since they take the chicken that's served for these orders for the buffet. Which means the buffet is constantly replenished so no worries about old chicken sitting underneath a heat lamp. I am a sucker for spicy, dark meat (of the poultry kind), so I made two trips to that buffet for 6 legs and one thigh along with almost every single side item they offered. Cole slaw, red beans, gram beans, mashed potato, dirty rice oh my! I'm not a huge fan of the biscuit, I Know, a sin, but also because I didn't want to fill up on carbs. The red beans may be mostly lard but goddamn it's delicious! So what about the price you ask? The buffet and a soda for less than $12, that's right! I don't eat fast food generally but I'll make an exception for Popeyes and especially the buffet. Certain fried foods will give me a headache or a stomach and surprisingly after being a glutton here, I felt great if not extremely stuffed! Do yourself a favor and make this your pit stop if you're passing through Lafayette, you won't regret it!

Yelp
I don't know what took Popeye's so long to jump on the chicken sandwich hype but man oh man I am so glad they did. Get yourself to your nearest Popeye's location and order the spicy chicken sandwich with extra pickles (because nothing compliments spicy chicken on a sandwich like some tart pickles) and proceed to be amazed. This sandwich is what's up ya'll. Ok? Picture this-a well seasoned and juicy chicken breast nestled between two slightly sweet buns with a spicy cajun sauce. Heaven. I don't know what's in that sauce but it is divine. I'm not sure if you're still reading but you should be in the car on the way to get that sandwich!

Kirk G.

Yelp
What a fucking joke! Just a soon close the doors. Help yourself if you have 25-30 minutes to wait for your order. This is just about every time we go. Good luck with your business, I know a lot of people and we will never go back.

Yelp
Today for lunch I decided to go to the only buffet Popeyes in the US that I know of (someone corrects me if I'm wrong) in Lafayette. Last week my co-worker had me try the blackened chicken and I was hooked after the first bit. When you hear of Popeyes chicken most people immediately thing greasy and fattening. Well believe me you these blackened tender ms are worth it. I ordered the 5 piece with biscuit and coleslaw as a side along with a sweet tea easy ice, my sauce was Mardi Gras mustard (in pre-celebration of the upcoming Mardi Gras season. My fist bite into it was juicy and well seasoned. Definitely a recommender fo me.

Yelp
Another order going through the drive through and waiting 10 minutes for them to cook the chicken and I ask them to please check the order before bringing it out. And Again they leave out something in this case the chicken strips. Never fails. You pay for something and you don't receive it. Can't even make complaints to the main office that part of the app is always in maintenance. They should make sure everything ordered is in the bag before handing it to the customer and they get upset if we try to check the order. I thought everything was in the bag. The box I thought was the chicken strips end up being biscuits.

Chassidy S.

Yelp
This is the last Popeyes buffet in the world. I had to check it out. I really enjoyed the sides. You can add as much or as little rice to your red beans and rice. They macaroni and cheese, dirty rice, and a whole lot of biscuits. I went on a Sunday, so it was pretty crowded. I'm not sure if it's always like that. I will say that the chicken was sort of cold, so I didn't get a chance to fully enjoy my experience. I'm happy that I got a chance to go to the last Popeyes buffet, but I wouldn't go out of my way to eat there again.

Yelp
I am almost embarrassed to say this publicly.... but we flew all the way across country fro. Oregon and all my husband wanted was to stop at this Popeye's for the buffet. It was like Disney World to him. All you can eat chicken livers (which we cant get at home), all you can eat biscuits? Oh yeah. Unfortunately, my experience was less than otherworldly. They didnt have a lot of choices on the buffet. There wasnt any coleslaw, or mashed potatoes when I went through. They had dirty rice and cajun gravy, which was cool for me to try once, but when i went back, the rice wasnt there anymore. There weren't any sauces for the chicken, or honey for the biscuits. We were there at lunch time during the week and it just seemed like they should have had more food available.

Yelp
Was given an estimate of 15 minutes, took 30 which is understandable since it takes a while to cook food, wait until it's a safe temperature, and package it. I was happy it was fresh. The timing was not the issue. We were the first car there, bright blue little hatchback. Parked right in front of the door for convenience. Lady walks out with our $20 worth of chicken, past us & gives it to another guy in a gray car. Doesn't even ask. Here you go. Guy is confused. Lady walks away no questions. He takes bag & opens boxes. Returns to door saying it isn't his. She takes it, repackages it. (Which tbh haven worked in the food industry doesn't sound food-safe considering another customer touched it, but at this point we have been waiting 35 minutes.) Almost gives to a large black truck. Had to call out our window across the parking lot that it was our food. Unbelievable. P.s. This was an hour before closing & it was Valentines day so I'll cut some slack. Two stars. TL;DR: Waited 30 minutes to be ignored & hands food to stranger who returns, wait for repackaging. Walks past us again. Almost gives food to another stranger across parking lot.

Tay W.

Yelp
The order was read back to me correctly JUST to be given to me incorrectly. Then was going to let me drive off without the rest of my food before I said something. Very unprofessional and I do not decorating there.

Yelp
When it comes to fried chicken, it simply doesn't get any better. This particular establishment is busy, which means the chicken is hot and fresh. Don't waste your time with the mild.. get the spicy. What makes this Popeye's unique is the buffet option. Love this place. A+ in my book.
google avatar

Yelp
BUFFET!! I believe this is the last standing Popeyes buffet! We went during lunch time and it got pretty pack! The buffet consists of pretty much everything you can order at a regular Popeyes, in addition to chicken livers and mac and cheese! Make sure to get a new plate at the beginning of the line (not at the register) every time you go to the line! Happy feasting!
google avatar

Juliet K.

Yelp
This location is one of or maybe the only Popeye's that still has a buffet and serves fried liver. I like this place because you can try all the foods at once. Popeyes has such delicious sides it's hard to choose just one so here you can eat them all. All the food was fresh, place was clean, team members very nice, and the sweet tea was perfect.

Yelp
I'm extremely disappointed. My wallet was lost/stolen on 3/17/21 and I went back to this location where I lost my wallet and requested for the Manager Brian to review the surveillance footage and he promised that he would. As of today 3/30/21, he or anyone from this location has NEVER followed up with me. I was visiting from California for a family function. Imagine not having id, a license, money, credit cards ..and all I needed was follow up, care and concern. Someone at this establishment got my wallet because that's the only place we went and I dropped it there. Now I had to order all ids, credit cards, not to mention my $380 cash. The problem that I have is that no one from this restaurant had showncare or concern since the incident.

Yelp
4 stars because it's the last remaining Popeyes buffet in the WORLD and it was just as good (maybe better) than your average Popeyes. So, you stand in line and order and, as far as I could tell, there was no menu listing for the buffet nor price so I think you could totally miss the fact that this is also a buffet if you're not paying attention. They had spicy and mild chicken- no strips and no seafood. As far as sides go, there were plenty of biscuits, coleslaw, mashed potatoes, red beans, dirty rice, Mac n cheese, and fries (you have to ask for the fries and sauces). When you're ready to return for more, you get back in line and let the cashier know you got the buffet and need another plate. The price was sooooooooooooo cheap! Less than $10/pp. Yeah, you could get the $5 box, but for less than 2 boxes, you could eat as much as you want and brag on the fact that you hit up the Popeyes buffet- the same one frequented by Anthony Bourdain. I highly recommend checking this place out. Who knows how much longer it will be around.

Yelp
Love the staff. Everyone knows it and they deserve a raise. You guys kill it and WE ALL SEE IT. BRAVO.
google avatar

Eemil H.

Yelp
The most kind staff I've ever had the pleasure of getting food with, the place was in a great shape and all the workers had a great attitude and mindset. Felt like home. 10/10 recommended.
google avatar

Sean C.

Yelp
I have a soft spot for Popeyes, and this is buffet. It is what you expect, if you expect amazing. Bourdain (RIP) actually came here twice while filming his last season, because even gourmet chefs know when down and dirty comfort food is just exactly what you need.
google avatar

Anawin K.

Yelp
This is the only Popeyes with a buffet left in the world. I was in town so I decided to give it a shot. It is $8.29 per person. A drink is extra. Things that are offered include regular and spicy chicken, fried chicken livers, mashed potatoes and gravy, red beans, dirty rice, mac & cheese, coleslaw, green beans, and the infamous biscuits. I was very disappointed. The chicken and the sides have been sitting there under the warmer for a long time. Everything was so dry. Nothing was fresh. It seems like the buffet has been neglected and that none of the employees really cared about it. The employee who rang me up was super rude. I was hoping that the last buffet left would be excellent, but I left very disappointed. I will not be back.

PoweredbyPraise N.

Yelp
I promised myself that I would write a review after a wonderful visit I had, probably 2 months ago. But still, the staff was very welcoming and kind. The food was fresh, the restaurant was clean, and the staff seemed genuinely happy to be there. One staff member stood out in guest service, Jennifer. She had a contagious good energy and helpful demeanor. Popeyes on Pinhook shows what guest service should look like. Thank you!
google avatar

Goomba B.

Yelp
Make sure you grab a manager if you want a second plate. The line workers look away when you get up to the buffet line. If all you want is 2 out of of five star chicken, this place is fine. The "service" is less than zero stars.
google avatar

Henri L.

Yelp
Just a bit of advice, don't get the food through the drive-thru here. Just go inside and get the buffet. If you just want chicken, biscuits and a few other sides, just load down your plate and go to town at the buffet. If you want good Popeyes Drive-thru food, try another location. This is the last Popeyes buffet in the world supposedly, so don't miss out on a bite there.
google avatar

Tamara C.

Yelp
It's fast food and it's consistent. The location is kinda awkward. I'm from Louisiana so it's nostalgic and the one food I gotta have when I come back. It's not the best food and at the same time it is. Only buffet Popeyes left! And a fun date or family noght.
google avatar

Sean F.

Yelp
Popeye's. Buffet. All the chicken and sides you care to eat, and you can keep going back for more. It's the last Popeye's buffet in existence, so you'd better try it before it's extinct.
google avatar

Carlos T.

Yelp
This location has consistently gotten my order wrong, forgotten part of it, and it always seems to be running low on food. The food usually looks dry like its sat there all day long. I love Popeyes and have never had such constant disappointment from any other locations

Marc M.

Yelp
This has got to be one of the worst Popeyes in Louisiana. I've lived in Lafayette for the past 5 years and I've yet to be served food at the drive-thru window. I have never waited less than 10 minutes on the side of the building and the people working get extremely rude. Ex: The cashier at the window slammed the window shut when I asked if they had any sweet tea up front after she told me she had ran out of sweet at the window. As a person who loves the Popeyes brand, it is very upsetting to see them constantly serving and acting this way.

John D.

Yelp
Worst food I every got from a Popeyes. Chicken, mash potatoes and biscuit was old. Inedible. I got drive thru so it was too far to return it. Will never get take out from this location again.
google avatar

Robert R.

Yelp
The only reason I'm reviewing this popeye's is because this is no ordinary popeye's. No sir. This, my friend, is an all you can eat popeye's buffet. Yes, you heard right. All of that greasy, artery hardening, gut busting chicken that you dare to eat, for one low price. While I don't recommend constant trips here, a yearly pilgrimage to this mecca of fried chicken purveyors is definitely in order. I've only been once, but it was fantastic. They didn't have all the sides out, I'm not sure if they rotate what they put on the buffet or if its a set menu. All I know is that I ate until I couldn't move any more, and I was happy. Do yourself a favor and check this place out.

Yelp
Great buffet! The people working are polite and helpful as well. One of the better Popeye's we have been in!
