What Is Himalayan Cuisine? Chefs Rethink South Asia’s Mountain Foods | Eater

"A Kolkata restaurant led by 'momo queen' Doma Wang and her daughter Sachiko Seth that remakes Tibetan comfort foods as an homage to family heritage, using accessible formats to introduce unfamiliar ingredients: "I want to familiarize my diners with the cuisine using proper thought, say by introducing an unknown ingredient in a format they are comfortable with," Seth says. Menus include homestyle momos and inventive desserts such as Tibetan butter tea ice cream and a reinterpretation of China’s White Rabbit candy; for bakcha moku (a traditional sweet made with churpi, butter, flour, and sugar) she adapts the components—replacing the churpi with cream cheese ice cream, swapping the flour for mochi shells, and pairing them with white chocolate nougat—because, in her words, "Given Tibetans make up [a tiny fraction] of the world’s population, this is the only way I can preserve the culture." - Rituparna Roy

Looking for place which serves excellent Tibetan food in Kolkata? Head to Popo's on Middleton Street, located within the Sikkim House Complex, close to the Maidan Metro Station. A small place which serves excellent food, backed by wonderful service. Though many vegetarian options are there, non vegetarians shall enjoy here more. No alcohol. The only drag - the lack of parking. I personally enjoyed the momos, the chicken wings and the roast pork. Slurp

POPO’s - A Culinary Gem by Chef Sachiko Seth At POPO’s, the menu is a delightful showcase of Tibetan-inspired dishes, lovingly curated by the young and talented Chef Sachiko Seth, who is recognized as one of India’s top chefs. With roots in his grandfather’s recipes, the restaurant embodies tradition with a modern flair. The food I tried was absolutely delectable, from the crispy prawn toast 🍤 to the lephing 🍲, each dish packed a punch of flavor. The chives momo 🥟 were perfectly delicate, while the chicken curry noodle 🍜 offered a comforting blend of spices. For something unique, the baigun keema and husang phalay didn’t disappoint. If you love cheese, the ema datshi is a must-try! Rounding out my meal, I savored the bhakcha moku and finished with a delicious chya biscuit — their butter tea was ah-mazing as well (better than the one when I first tried it in Bhutan) If you're looking for authentic Tibetan flavors with a contemporary twist, POPO’s is the place to be. Highly recommend!

A very authentic Tibetan-Nepalese restaurant in the area. Just a few minutes walk from the Maidan metro, in the Sikkim house complex. Welcoming staffs, amazing gastronomy options with very good ambiance and interior. Totally recommended ✌🏽

Starting from the beginning – Tibetan cuisine? Never tried it before. Probably just like Chinese food. At least that's what I thought. I was wrong! Because the restaurant is a bit hidden behind two corners, I was a little uneasy when we entered. And wrong again! When you enter the place, you immediately notice: It's clean and tidy, has a very nice atmosphere, and is pleasantly quiet. The service came right away and explained the menu to us, as I didn’t know what was an appetizer or a main course. This menu isn't found everywhere. It is read horizontally and is designed in a great way. On my first visit, I had Momos, chicken curry, and fried noodles. Also, a great dessert, but I forgot the name. About the food, I must say it was really very good. It was not too spicy, or too bland. Everything was finely seasoned and a real joy. Rarely eaten so well. The service was also excellent, much better than in the hotel. Overall, a real experience! Because it was so good, we went there again. This time, I tried some vegetarian dishes, which I’m not usually so convinced by. But here, really super delicious. I had veg. Momos, veg. soup with mushrooms, veg. curry, and a dessert, which I will mention later. Everything was a real experience and top-notch. However, the highlight was the dessert. The “Fire Rabbit.” It gives you goosebumps, a culinary delight that is unparalleled. What a flavor explosion! Summary: For me, the food was a revelation. One of the best restaurants I've ever had the pleasure of dining at, and highly recommended. You think I'm exaggerating? Then see for yourself and give it a try. By the way, it's also suitable for diabetics – my blood sugar only went up to 175.

Their food is out of this world. The desserts like Bhakcha Moku, Chya Biskut and white rabbit is magic. Ambience is just fantastic. Don’t miss this restaurant. Hands down my favourite place to eat in Kolkata.
