What Is Himalayan Cuisine? Chefs Rethink South Asia’s Mountain Foods | Eater

"A Kolkata restaurant led by 'momo queen' Doma Wang and her daughter Sachiko Seth that remakes Tibetan comfort foods as an homage to family heritage, using accessible formats to introduce unfamiliar ingredients: "I want to familiarize my diners with the cuisine using proper thought, say by introducing an unknown ingredient in a format they are comfortable with," Seth says. Menus include homestyle momos and inventive desserts such as Tibetan butter tea ice cream and a reinterpretation of China’s White Rabbit candy; for bakcha moku (a traditional sweet made with churpi, butter, flour, and sugar) she adapts the components—replacing the churpi with cream cheese ice cream, swapping the flour for mochi shells, and pairing them with white chocolate nougat—because, in her words, "Given Tibetans make up [a tiny fraction] of the world’s population, this is the only way I can preserve the culture." - Rituparna Roy

Tried Popo’s by Blue Poppy recently and honestly, it feels like a hidden paradise. The place is quiet, cozy and very welcoming, and the staff are super polite and humble. We ordered Crispy Prawn Toast and Chicken Momos for starters, followed by Chicken & Egg Garlic Fried Rice with Kalo Chicken. For drinks, we had Passion Fruit Boba Tea and Banana Pepsi — both were really unique and refreshing. Everything tasted amazing, and the overall dining experience was great. Definitely worth a visit if you’re looking for something different and comforting!

Beautiful ambience. Tasty food. I found the prices little bit higher. The traditional Tibetan butter tea was absolutely superb 💯 . I also loved the Sonam' chilli chicken, crispy prawn toast with garlic veg rice. The Lemon honey refresher was also good. The chilli butter chicken wings and veg momo were okay. The location was also quite easy, to be found. Much recommended for anyone who wants try new cuisine like Tibetan.

Had the best chilly pork and yak & churpi❤️😍🤤 Debadrit Thapa was taking care of the hospitality, he is very polite and his suggestions were very helpful. Butter Chilli Crab, Losar Pork Roast, Phalay with the garlic butter, Chicken Thenthuk were also utterly delicious. Looking forward to coming here again with family and friends.

This quaint place by Blue Poppy is fairly new, so we depended on Blue Poppy Thakali’s reputation to try out this place. The items do taste pretty authentic and the behaviour of the servers is very pleasant, the service is a bit slow but it’s not too bad. Coming to what we tried, the Dan Dan noodles was the worst of the lot, didn’t suit my taste palette at all, but the iced tea, chilli pork and fried rice made up for it, the portion size is good enough. Overall worth a visit for pleasant dining experience.

An impromptu visit to this fantastic cafe about 10 days ago and it was nothing short of perfect. We had crispy Prawn toast, Sonams chilli chicken, shamu datshi, Himalayan butter tea, rice tea.. whole thing costed us 2200.. totally worth it! Prawn toast was my favorite though.. Special mention - the chef stood outside and served us a few times too, very very professional.

This visit was extremely disappointing and honestly unacceptable. I came back with high expectations because my previous experience here was good, especially the mutton momos, which were once flavorful and well-filled. This time, the mutton momos were completely ruined. The filling had no proper taste, the texture was poor, and the quality was nowhere close to what it used to be. It felt careless and badly prepared. The veg momos (spinach and churpi cheese, 4 small pieces) were even worse. The taste was horrible and not fit to be served, especially at such an absurd price. The portion size was tiny, and the quality did not justify the cost at all. For the amount charged for just a few items, one could easily afford a full family meal elsewhere. The only item that was acceptable was the chicken dish, which was decent, but one okay dish does not make up for an overall bad experience. There has been a clear and serious drop in quality while prices remain unreasonably high. This level of inconsistency is not acceptable. Very dissatisfied, and I would not recommend this place unless major improvements are made.
