A Cute Cheese Shop on H Street — And More Closures in December | Eater DC

"After 11 years of feeding nearby George Washington University students, this daytime cafe has closed; the Korean-influenced destination for bubble tea, ube milk soft serve, and BLTs announced its permanent closure on Friday, December 5. Its Instagram hints at the new Downtowner Delicatessen Cafe coming soon to the same address." - Tierney Plumb

I didn’t even know a waffle sandwich existed. They gave me a side of syrup. It might’ve been the best sandwich I’ve ever had.

Google
We wanted to experience this restaurant. However, as opposed to the listed hours, they stated they opened at 10:30 today. Fine, we will wait 20 minutes. I call and ensure the store will be open with the kid inside and he says “yes.” We show up at 10:40 and the door is still closed. We knock and say we just called yet he gave an excuse of being closed for a catering order and couldn’t even help us for another 15-20 minutes. Don’t waste your customers’ time and then give them a nonsensical reason as to why you cannot open when you say you will. Horrendous business model.

Google
Korean food was so good. We got the bulgobgi bowl with spicy pork added. It came with a dumpling (mandu) that was huge and perfectly fried. We also order a cantaloupe smoothie and it tasted so good. Service was also amazing. The person that took our order was very friendly. We came at 10am but wanted lunch which they don't serve until 10:30. He let us wait and immediately took our order once lunch was served.

If you’re anywhere near the 1901 block of Pennsylvania Avenue, NW you MUST check out PoppaBox! They’re the best little hidden gem of the city. With an amazing breakfast platter for under $9 you get two eggs, your choice of meats (sausage, bacon, ham), and waffles. You cannot beat this combo with a stick. The staff is always friendly, professional and helpful with any questions about the menu. Check them out!

Google
If you like Asian food and are on a budget, this is the eatery for you. My friend got the Tofu Bibim Bap ($11.49) and I got the Bulgogi NoodleBox ($12.49) and Honeydew Bubble Tea ($5.49). Large portions of good food at very reasonable prices.

Google
Fun food in a cozy street shop. It's not every day that I find bulgogi and other Korean mainstays at a shop like this one -- and I'm glad to have found it. PoppaBox provides decent food for decent prices, so 4 stars all around. Gourmet? Not so much. You're not getting gourmet for these prices. But a belly full of bulgogi, rice, glass noodles and a potsticker -- you definitely get that. I'll eat here again.

Jiri M.

Google
This was my third visit. First two the food was good. This time the teriyaki chicken seemed boiled and smelled way past its use date. Bowl went straight in the bin unfortunately. First two visits … four stars. This last one. Zero stars.

Google
Stopped in for a late lunch and it wasn’t busy. Ordered a bulgogi noodle box, about $12, which came out fast and hot. Great flavor, nice level of spice, plenty of tender beef. And lots of noodles! I’m happy, I’d come back and eat here again and try something else with confidence.

Yelp
First off, the customer service is incredible! The man working there was so friendly; he was working by himself, but still made the food really quickly and it tasted phenomenal. I had the bulgogi noodle box, which was delicious! Cooked and seasoned really well, definitely the delicious Asian takeout I've been looking for. My friend got the bao sandwiches, which were wayyy bigger than we expected. Overall, you get really big portions for a great price. The place is small, but cozy. There's enough seating and the place is clean. They even have a wall of polaroids with customers, which I thought was very cute and made the place seem even friendlier. I really can't wait to go back. I would definitely recommend!

Yelp
2 words: good food. I visited twice for lunch and the food is good, friendly owner, and super fast service. They have a pretty big menu so get a couple of items.

Yelp
Let's start off with the customer service 100 out of 10. When you walk in the gentleman welcome you and even explain the menu to us being it's our first time here. It's a cute little cafe style restaurant downtown. The food was fresh, hot and delicious. I can't believe I never heard of this place until now. I found a little gem that I definitely have to make frequent trips to now. This place got busy really quickly and customers service was the same for everyone that came in. I'm in foodie love.

Yelp
...... idk where to begin! Let's start here. The food was good. Price was reasonable and wait time was okay. My order was incorrect! I was on a lunch break so I couldn't go back and get my order fixed once I got back to work and noticed it was wrong. My sandwich had to be someone else order! This was a bummer!!! That food that I received that wasn't mines was nasty!!! I didn't like that sandwich at all!!!! My lunch was ruined and money down the drain! Next time I'm taste and check my food b4 I leave ! Super mad.

Yelp
Immediately when I walked in I was greeted and had a big menu across the board. The cashier asked if I was really hungry to help em determine what to get. I ended up getting a Mini Beef Bowl and upgraded my rice to fried rice. The beef was very soft, not too fatty, and subtle in the taste that becomes pretty flavorful towards the end. Not sure how they marinate it to become that was but I am quite impressed with my Bulgogi. The rice on the other hand... I probably much would have rather preferred the white steam rice. The mixed vegetables in my fried rice was very much like the mixed vegetables you'd get in the frozen section, not flavorful or anything spectacular.
google avatar

Kayla W.

Yelp
Really good food & cute ambiance and staff very kind and i had a mango smoothie and it was super mango-y.
google avatar

Michael C.

Yelp
The waffle I got was horrible it tasted like they made the batter with spoiled milk and the customer service was extremely rude

What's The Tea ?.

Yelp
Delicious bao and noodle box. Friendly service and large portions. HOWEVER, the boba place attached to this establishment is questionable. We ordered a "taro bubble tea" and got vanilla protein powder flavored milk. I actually don't see how it could have been anything else-it just tasted like vanilla protein powder.

Yelp
Great little place to get some lunch and some food. The food was really tasty and seasoned very well. It is a very casual stop by place to eat out. Loved the atmosphere and it is a reasonable size so the place is not too crowded all the time and the food is packed to go style. No complaints, I am glad I tried out the place!

Ty C.

Yelp
this place is so good. The workers are all super nice and there is a good range of prices

Yelp
Just happen to ride up on and decided to order their bao teriyaki chicken sandwhiches. Ive seen them many places before but never had them and was definitely glad I chose to get them today. The flavor paired with the softness and crunch of the slaw was so well paired that it was amazing! Also their chicken teriyaki noodle bowl was full of flavor and the sweet flavor paired with the bold spice worked well for the noodles! I definitely will be going back!
google avatar

Chivas O.

Yelp
I loved the bulgogi bibimap (sorry if it's misspelled). The Poppasub and poppabox were both outstanding as well. I enjoyed the bubble tea as well. It wasn't busy while we were there which is a shame because I would recommend this place to anyone who wants to try this type of food. They should be packed all the time. A+ would return anytime
google avatar

Andrew T.

Yelp
Overall disappointing. Really dry rice & okay pork. The sides in the box were all meh and dry too. Wouldn't recommend even if you were really hungry and haven't eaten all day.
google avatar

Jade J.

Yelp
Poppabox was not bad but it wasn't the most memorable meal. The food was satisfying and well presented in an divided black box. The service was swift. I ordered the chicken teriyaki poppa box which came with shrimp & vegetable tempura, salad, three California rolls, rice and some sauce. The chicken was flavorful but a bit cold upon arrival. I felt as if there could be a bit more flavor in the chicken and rice but I did enjoy the dumplings. The pork and egg sandwich was a bit more enjoyable but a bit too chewy for my taste. The fries were as you would expect. This place wouldn't be my first choice but I wouldn't be opposed to going back.

Taylor W.

Yelp
Service is always fast. Food quality is excellent given that it meets the true definition of a fast food spot. Never disappointed in food quality/taste regardless of my choice. Could eat here multiple times a week. Go to choice is the Teppanyaki bowl with teriyaki chicken or bulgogi and fried rice instead of white rice.

Yelp
We were pretty hungry last week, so we stopped in poppaboxdc for their Poppa bear waffle sandwich and Fried Chicken n' French fries...so good . The location is reminiscent of a corner / convenience store, so I knew the food would be delicious! Follow us on IG for more foodie pics: @BrwndButter

Yelp
Poppabox is One of my all-time favorite places in DC. When I moved back here after the pandemic, I was so worried that it had closed because it relied on the business of college students. Luckily it's still open and tastes better than ever. The restaurant is nothing fancy, it has basic dishes where you get to choose your base and your meat. I personally enjoy the chicken teriyaki and the Bulgogi. You can't find the small style chicken teriyaki anywhere in DC so I love coming here to get it. Their fried chicken and waffles are also insanely good. Everything is reasonably priced, I think the most expensive thing on their menu is $14. It's not gourmet but it's exactly what you need, especially for the college students in the area. I will be a lifelong client.

Yelp
About a 1-1.5: Unfortunately, I was lured in here by the cute little logo that Poppabox had, as well as the cheery yellow exterior. The menu offers Asian fusion fare, from bento boxes with teriyaki, rice bowls, noodle bowls, and various side items, such as dumplings and waffle sandwiches. I tried the Deluxe Box, which you choose from chicken teriyaki, tofu, bulgogi, spicy shrimp, or spicy pork (I opted for the spicy pork; this was pretty inedible, as it was too much of a sweet sauce to it with no spice, and the pork meat seemed a little off); a choice of steamed or fried rice (I opted for the latter, and the fried rice had absolutely no seasoning or taste; it was probably one of the worst fried rice dishes I've had); 2 pieces of California Roll, a Crispy Roll, and some mixed tempura. Honestly, I only ended up eating one of the California Rolls and then just tossed the rest. I felt as if it was a total waste, and I really didn't understand how this bento, which should have just been simple and tasty, ended up being so wrong. Maybe I should have tried the chicken teriyaki instead, or tried another rendition, such as the Poppa Cup? In addition, it was pretty uncomfortable in there, as they had all the doors and the windows opened, so dining in on one of the hottest days of the summer was just not going to happen. I'm glad I was able to give this place a try, but I wouldn't go back! +not-so-good spicy pork! +avoid the fried rice! +uncomfortable dining-in +limited metered parking

Yelp
Quick service and friendly staff. It has great bulgogi bowls and sandwiches. Beef Bulgogi

Yelp
First time I came, everything went smoothly. Food delicious, on time, very good customer service. Overall good. Unfortunately today I went, I wanted to try something new. I wanted the mini box with glass noodles instead of rice. He said that's not possible I need to get a noodle box. I got the noodles and I see that it's lo mein and a huge portion of noodles with little meat. I told him that's not what I wanted, he then says the glass noodles I wanted are a smaller portion and said I can't have a refund. I said that perfectly fine, can I have that please. He said no. So not only I can't get a refund but I can't even have anything else to eat. I'm not sure if it was a language barrier, but it was obvious I wasn't satisfied. Just so disappointed.

Yelp
I've been wanting to go to Poppabox forever now and I'm glad I went before Christmas! I ordered the deluxe spicy pork bento which had tempura, japchae (Korean glass noodles) and some california roll pieces. You can choose between regular white rice or fried rice. I honestly didn't care for the fried rice, so the white rice was a good enough option for me. The spicy pork was yummy- really reminded me of home, since my mom is really good at making korean style marinated meats! I've been wanting Korean food for the longest time so it's good that there's a place I can go to that isn't as far away as Annandale VA! I didn't love the waffle sandwich, as the waffle itself wasn't toasted- it felt soggy. Because I ordered to go, the sandwich was crammed into a little take out box which makes me think that the bread got really soggy. They also added a little too much mayo. It was just really messy for me. Despite that, I will come back to try the other bento boxes!!

Yelp
The tofu bimibab was FINE. but the felt like all the components were from frozen or canned vegetables.
google avatar

Yelp
Freaking hidden gem this place is! I got lucky and somehow stumbled by it as I was walking in DC. The price is reasonable, the food is good! I would definitely want to go back and try more things on the menu, there were so many yummy looking things to choose from!

Yelp
This is a cute small place at foggy bottom. I ordered the spicy pork poppabox and it was so tasty! My order had pork, lettuce, dumplings, white rice, noodles, carrots, spinach (or some other similar green) and i also topped it with some spicy mayo + sriracha. Some other things I remember from the menu were bibimbap, chicken tenders and fries, waffle sandwiches, meat wraps, and some small dishes. There were also tofu equivalent options for almost every meat order. The prices ranged from about $4-15. The space reminded me of the local restaurants I would stop at growing up in Nigeria while road tripping with family (mama-put) just because of the enclosed space with simple wooden furniture design. There was only indoor seating available, and the tables were a little small but I was able to share one with 2 other friends. There isn't a lot of seating area and I'd estimate no more than 20 people can be in the building at the same time.
google avatar

Elizabeth L.

Yelp
Really tasty food! I like the Poppabox, personally, but I've enjoyed everything I've eaten there. Inexpensive and tastes good. My only complaint is that the salads are a little overdressed, but that's really a minor issue.
google avatar

Rithu S.

Yelp
I loved that this place doesn't just stick to Korean food. What if you want some variety in your life, am I right? We got the beef bulgogi deluxe plate that comes with pasta, sushi, and vegetable tempura. I love a place with variety! I also loved that they have mini sizes for the times you don't want to eat like a pig, and you also don't want to take food back to the office or on the metro where everyone around you is uncomfortable. Yes you, Susan.

Yelp
Came here because of its proximity to Bon Matcha (which is literally attached to this place). Decent food -- prices are a bit high for what it is, but overall not bad if you're looking for some "Asian fusion" food. FOOD I ordered the bulgogi wrap and my boyfriend ordered the spicy pork bibimbap. His bowl was gigantic. My order came in a relatively smaller box. Price difference was $1 -- made me feel like I should've just gotten the box. The wrap came with some gochujang sauce on the side which I felt was definitely needed. The contents of the wrap went nicely together in terms of flavor. The bulgogi was well marinated and tender! The bibimbap had a nice assortment of vegetables + some pineapples. The spicy pork was also well marinated and tender. ATMOSPHERE The doors of the store were wide open when we went. It was really hot outside so I'm confused why they decided to let all the cool air out. It was fine inside temperature-wise, but I got a mosquito bite while I was in there! :( They seem to double as a convenience store. It was clean inside, though, despite the disorganization going on behind the scenes. SERVICE Service could've been better. The woman who took our order was a bit impatient with me because I got a little confused with the menu. Other than that, you just take an order number and pick it up yourself. OVERALL I'd come back if I'm in the area! Penn Grill was closed (it was the weekend), which was the original place we wanted to go, so I'll try that place next time to see if it's better. The prices here are a *bit* high for what you get, but I wouldn't say I felt cheated out of my money. Give it a try and judge for yourself.
google avatar

Alaina P.

Yelp
Awesome, affordable food in a cute space! The employees are great and I've never had to wait long for my food. The food itself is so so good. They keep it simple here and everything tastes clean and fresh...unlike many other places that claim to serve Asian/Korean food. Definitely worth checking out! For GW students: They also accept GWorld!

Jeffrey L.

Yelp
We tried to eat at Founding Farmers and it was going to be an hour wait. We walked back to Poppabox, hungry but not expecting much. Everything was delicious and the staff couldn't be nicer. We tried the spicy pork ramen soup, the chicken and fries, the beef bao sandwich, and the spicy pork bulgogi noodle bowl. Everything was on point. Will definitely be back to this wonderful and unpretentious spot.

Yelp
Poppabox! This place has been high on my to-do list for the past few months because of some cool pictures from other Yelpers. The Waffles with the cinnamon and sugar were what really turned me on, plus they have Chicken and Waffles, I had to pay this place a visit. Looking at the menu there, I don't know why I would possibly order Chicken and Waffles here. I'm passing on beef so that eliminates Bulgolgi. Why did I not try the Tofu Bibimbap? Why did I pass on the Teriyaki Chicken? The same reason I didn't order a Chicken Poppa Cup, I fumbled. I ordered the Chicken and Waffles, proceeded to have a seat and scope my surroundings. I am all for any place that incorporates wood. I should have knocked on it to see if it was real, it doesn't matter because it looked it. One wall was replete with pictures of patrons taken inside the restaurant. I don't know if it was with a new Polaroid or a Fuji but everyone had on their best faces and the pictures came out nicely. "Pick it up!" Sitting down to my food it was as good as I expected--so so. I wasn't disgusted but I wasn't eating it thinking that I can't wait to return. I did like the music playing though. When David Guetta and Akon came on I was hoping that Memories was up next--it wasn't. :-(
google avatar

Kristina T.

Yelp
Proton size for the poppabox and the poppabox deluxe was great. BUT the quality of the food wasn't all that great. Not only that but the customer Service deserves 1 star! Definitely won't be back. Unfortunately the food looks very deceiving. We got: shrimp poppabox and chicken teriyaki deluxe poppabox
google avatar

Alise G.

Yelp
Super cute spot to eat and very inexpensive however they will charge $.25 for extra sauce. Their seasoned fries are the highlight on the menu. The mini bowls are great for a quick bite to eat, the waffles and turkey bacon on the breakfast menu are great selections in the morning. They put a bit of cinnamon on the waffles which adds a nice finishing touch. Attached on the side of the restaurant there is a cute place to grab ice cream, bubble tea and soft serve. I love stopping by on a summer day.
google avatar

Alice J.

Yelp
A lovely little place at a convenient location. They serve sandwiches as well as unique Asian fusion (Korean / Japanese) lunch boxes and various dishes. What a delightful surprise to find this place. I ordered for take out. The bento box is amazing. Huge portion (it turned out to be 2 meals for me, great saving). Delicious tender, teriyaki chicken. Nice fried rice. And the tempura is nicely done (not overcooked). 4 pieces of sushi. Beautifully presented. Will come back.
google avatar

Evangeline T.

Yelp
We've come here several times now. Normally we order the chicken teriyaki poppabox bento, spicy pork poppabox bento & bowl. Best bento box in the DMV so far! We're coming back.
google avatar

Melanie K.

Yelp
I had waffles which were pretty average. It was soft.. I like mine crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside, but it was just soft all around. After pouring the syrup, it was just mushy and soggy...not a great waffle experience. I only had waffles, so I probably should try the other things the next time I go. Maybe the other items on the menu are more worth it than the waffles I had.
google avatar

Yelp
Got the Beef Bulgogi PoppaCup and it was so delicious and filling. This "cup" was a big bowl that held white rice, sweet potatoe glass noodles, lettuce, fried dumplings, kimchi (optional), Bulgogi beef with a mix of spicy mayo, teriyaki, and hoisin sauce. Isn't this bowl an eye and mouth opener? It all came with a decent DC price of about $12. The lady who helped me did so with a continuous smile. This is an order and fast food sit down or take out type of place, which means no tips!!!

Yelp
GW STUDENTS! If you're on a budget and have a big appetite, then Poppabox is the perfect option for you! It's only a five minute walk from the law school, and a ten minute walk from the undergrad campus. Usually, I'll order the chicken teriyaki, teppanyaki style, with extra veggies instead of rice (because carbs suck). It's a little over $10 and it'll provide you with enough fuel to get you through the day. If you're not carb conscious, then go ahead and get some of that rice. If you order a "poppacup" then you get a combination of food along with a few dumplings. Quick, Quality, and large Quantities! Warning: if you ask for fried rice instead of steamed rice, it's not really fried rice... they just throw some peas and carrots in there lol - VVP
google avatar

Hebing Z.

Yelp
Small and affordable korean food. I got the Bulgolgi Poppa Bowl, it was about $12. I also got the gochujang for free on the side. One thing that I was a bit disappointed was over half of the box was filled with rice and only a thing layer of the japchea noodles that was covering the rice. The only bonus is it came with 4 pieces of dumplings. Obviously, it is not as good as the restaurants at Anandale, but this location is convienient located next to the World Bank and near the GW campus. I would have given it a 4 star, but the restaurant was very hot. I went on a sunny and warm day and it was very humid in there. I would suggest getting the food to-go instead. #HappyDining!

Gina K.

Yelp
To preface, I am Korean so I have some expectations for Korean food. My friends and I came to get Bon Matcha next door (which is amazing!) and decided to share a quick bite at PoppaBox. We wanted to get the bao buns, but they were out so we went for some bibimbap (tofu, since one friend is vegetarian.) If you're okay with a mediocre rice/salad bowl, it's fine, but if you expect Korean style bibimbap, you will be disappointed. Aside from rice and tofu, it has red cabbage, lettuce, corn, edamame, bits of scrambled?? egg, and beets. None of those ingredients are ever in real bibimbap. No fried egg, bean sprouts, spinach, mushrooms. Also, kimchi was a dollar extra. Good sized portion, but glad I shared with friends bc I wouldn't have paid or ate it all by myself

Yelp
All summer this breakfast lunch spot had a line out the door, but lately I noticed since it's been chilly the lines are no longer there. I knew I would get around to checking this place out eventually. I tried their beef bulgogi, they offer a choice of steamed rice and fried rice. I went with the steamed. Service did not take long, cost $9.85, and the portion was a nice size. I am pleased to report that this was the best bulgogi that I've tasted out of about the 4 times I've eaten it at various places. Poppabox is a cute restaurant with a window on the side where you can order ice cream, bubble tea, and coffee. I love the bright yellow decor and top 40's pop and r n 'b music they pump during lunch. It's small, kind of reminds me of a clubhouse. I think the concept is really cool and hip, a nice break from the office. They offer sandwich wraps, breakfast, and they specialize in waffle sandwiches, as well as chicken 'n waffles. There are quite a few items to choose from, so it will be a while before I get bored of this place. Something New. Something Fun. Yayyy!
google avatar

Jeff L.

Yelp
This place is super hip and I've passed by here a gagillion times but I never came in. This evening I had a sweet tooth for some down-to-earth food, and the fact that they were still open past 7pm on a Friday, definitely helped. I wasn't too clear about the assortment of bowl offerings, so I decided to go for the steak and cheese sub platter. To be more specific, it's called the bulgogi steak and cheese sandwich. This included provalone cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, and mayonase. I held off in the mayonase, and opted for mustard instead. The platter also included french fries which is cool I guess. I placed my order and decided to take a walk in the park, while all of this was being prepared. I arrived back several minutes later and my food was ready. At that point it appeared that they were getting ready to close, so I walked back over to the park so I could quickly take a few bites of the sandwich, before my long trek home. The steak was definitely different, and not tough to swallow. They added some spices to it, and it some other ingredients that made it taste awesome. The fries aren't that bad also, and I'm sure I will finish those off by the time I make it to Georgetown.

Yelp
Teppanyaki, Noodle box, Poppa box were all tasty and the staffs were very kind. Nice lunch with comfortable music.

Yelp
Just ok. Food is meh, prices are meh, I feel like you could get something more satisfying for a little less at quite a few spots walking distance away. Staff is sweet but doesn't appear to be most experienced but that is fine. Bubble tea is nice to have around though!
google avatar

Monica W.

Yelp
I order the spicy pork buns, rice bowls here. Veggies are fresh and buns are hefty. Love to eat here when I get the chance.
google avatar

Lisa Y.

Yelp
Stopped here for lunch yesterday after finding out Founding Farmers had a 2 hour wait. So happy we did!! The food was plentiful & very tasty!! I had the beef bulgoggi bibimbap. Lots of meat & veggies! A little heavy on the lettuce, but there was enough meat & rice. Others had the chicken teriyaki and liked it! Will definitely be back!!
google avatar

Melody L.

Yelp
I've been here a few times for lunch, and I'm usually satisfied with my meal. It's a decent place for a reasonably priced quick lunch. I most recently tried the chicken teriyaki poppacup- it was just ok. While the portion size was generous, it was mostly just white rice. Also, the sweet potato vermicelli noodles were kind of bland and did not go well with the rice.
google avatar

Cheryl H.

Yelp
I order from Poppabox on the reg. It's really convenient and satisfies my lunch cravings most of the time. I usually get the mini bowl with chicken teriyaki. Despite being called "mini," it's actually got quite a lot of food. But sometimes I want a variety of small portions, and that's when the Deluxe comes in. You get rice and a protein, a few pieces of sushi, a couple of dumplings (these are yum) and some assorted tempura items (sweet potato lately). The only reason they aren't getting 5 stars is that it takes longer than you would expect for them to prepare the food. I would think it's all ready to be packaged up, but it usually takes about 15 minutes to get it after I order.

D S.

Yelp
Didn't expect the waffle to be soft and soggy. Fried chine was great. I don't think I'll get waffle sandwich again.

Yelp
This place is Korean food central for GW students in a walking distance. The bad news there is a credit card minimum, the breakfast is only till 11am and the spoons are too tiny to mix well for your bibimbamo. But I have been here for breakfast lunch and dinner and their food is just great. It is a bit pricy but I believe it got great flavor, it still keeps it authentic taste but able to still attract large group of non koreans to try Korean food in a very pleasant way!
