The Best Boba Tea Shops in San Diego | Eater San Diego

"This drive-thru kiosk in a Rancho Bernardo parking lot might be the smallest shop on the list, but it sets itself apart with scratch-made boba, fresh fruit, and homemade syrups that flavor its cleverly-named drinks like the Thank You Berry Matcha with housemade strawberry jam and the Looking Gourdeous with caramelized winter melon and green tea. The stand also serves snacks like banh mi and steamed buns." - Candice Woo

I ordered a milk tea with oat milk and boba. The boba texture was great. The green tea with oat milk tasted different than other ones that I’ve had but i could taste the freshness. I also had mango slushie. There’s mint flavor which made it taste more refreshing. I would love to go back for more

Love the avocado and sesame flavor. Nice service and I love that they make their own boba. Only got crystal boba in this photo unfortunately because they were fresh out of the good stuff at the end of the day when I went. Still good!

I love that the Taro taste like Taro. No heavy dyes or heavy sugar added. It was perfectly sweet. The chicken Banh Mi was also good. Nice lil gem here. Try it out.

One of my favorite boba houses in San Diego opened up a new location! All the same charm, flavor, and love as the RB booth but a much more convenient location if you're located south of the 56!

The service was excellent! However, that is the best thing I can say about this place. We ordered four drinks with various toppings, and we ended up tossing 3/4 of them just because of how unappealing they were. The boba is not like real tapioca pearls from other places, it looks and tastes like the fake type from canned drinks. It has a clearish muddy look and very small and not uniform. The drinks themselves tasted like watered down milk and the sesame topping was bitter. If you want to pay $8 for watered down tea, go for it. But there are so many other options in convoy nearby that are ten times better. I really don’t recommend coming here.

The owner, Yen, is very kind, and her drinks are amazing! I got the Honey, I do, and it was the perfect mix of sweet and refreshing. I love how there are no artificial sweeteners, and it's Lactose Free milk!!!! Her brown sugar and matcha boba pearls recipes are the perfect consistency!!! I am 100% recommending this place to my friends, and I highly recommend everyone else to check it out too! It's a little hidden since there's no sign outside, but there's a little table and is next door to Esno Ink. :]

Google
This Owner is very rude to her employees and I have gotten sick 8 times eating their. The food had mold on it and the food is kept in the fridge for more than a month because they don't have the customers to consume all the food to be rotated properly. Yen huynh will smile and seem nice. When in reality she is a very poor owner and operator and doesn't know how to properly prepare food. Also don't order anything that has pork in it as it is sitting in the fridge marinating in milk for a week and the fake homemade Boba has mold on it. She instructs her employees to just cut the mold of the taro because it's ok she tells her employees

Hands down one of the best boba spots I’ve ever been to! The service was incredible — super friendly, fast, and they made me feel so welcome the moment I walked in. The boba was absolutely perfect: soft, chewy, and paired so well with their rich, flavorful teas. And don’t even get me started on the banh mi! The bread was crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and the fillings were fresh and packed with flavor. Totally blew me away. If you’re looking for great drinks, delicious food, and awesome service, Poppy Boba Kitchen is the place. Can’t wait to come back!

Yelp
I was that impressed with the drinks here. The Mango didn't have much mango flavor at all and the avocado I didn't taste any avocado at all. The boba was just average at best plus was the boba topping is free on Tuesdays. Service was very friendly and fast however. Not a problem with that at all. Service would be a 5. No tables as well which is ok since we got them to go but if your looking for a place to sit to drink the drink or eat the food there really isn't a spot outside this place.

Yelp
Excellent & delicious food. Friendly service. Generous portions so I actually had lunch & dinner from my order. Great, integrated app & ordering system, they text when your order is ready. I got a $5 coupon for ordering thru the app. I was craving a boba tea & saw this location nearby & saw they had food, so decided to treat myself to lunch I never knew abt this place! They've been in biz 6 yr but this is a newer location for the . The young lady at the counter was super friendly & & so was her assistant in the kitchen. He was super kind & even brought my food out to the car--knowing that I was outside working on some calls/texts Great vibes here. I got food to go too... pork & chicken bao-both were excellent & flavorful. tofu lemongrass rice dish was fresh & tasty. I loved the texture of the tofu. It almost looked like eggs. The lychee jasmine tea had pieces of tasty fruit in there & the bobas are a nice texture. Fish sauce was delicious. I think this will be my new lunch spot when I'm visiting this part of town

Yelp
I had a mixed experience here, I love supporting small businesses so I had to try this whole in the wall spot. Their taro Vietnamese coffee was strong and delicious. Their taro milk tea was weirdly watered down and chunky. Their Boba, however was inedible. They said they make it in house...well it wasn't made right. It was grainy and mushy and not shaped like a tapioca ball at all. It was like someone chewed it previously for you and spit it back out, lol. The person behind the counter was super nice and even remade a drink...same issue. I feel bad! So don't get the boba.

Yelp
The only remaining location of Poppy Boba Kitchen now resides in the Ashford Center of Clairemont. I learned that it functioned as the main kitchen when they used to operate a second branch in National City. Two tables were placed outside the suite for seating, however most customers probably take their order to go. The main selling point of this business was the party size, half-gallon pitchers of drinks that they can cater. Coffee, iced teas, milk teas, lemonades, slushes, and smoothies were the beverage categories. A limited selection of food and snacks was also available. I chose the Rice Plate with grilled pork as the protein. White jasmine rice, cilantro, cucumber, pickled carrots & daikon, and fish sauce made up this item. It was packaged inside a cardboard takeout box. I think if they increase the portion size and price, then it might be better as I found the quantity of pork to be insufficient. The meat did have a good flavor though. For a drink, I purchased the I Really Lychee You. It was a blend of lychee juice and jasmine tea with two lychees on a spear appetizer pick that were added as a topping. The sweetness was moderate, but there was too much ice in the cup despite my request for less cubes. I noticed a couple of specials posted on small chalkboards, one for the weekend (spring rolls, vermicelli plate) and another on Tuesday (one free drink topping). The service was very pleasant from the worker (owner?). I gave a 3.5 star rating for my visit to Poppy Boba Kitchen.

Yelp
I actually came to find this place from Too Good To Go, and I'm glad I did! It's close to home and it will definitely be my new go-to boba spot. Super friendly staff and delicious drinks!!

Yelp
This is hidden on in Kearny Mesa (?) area. Close to the convoy street but not walkable from busy convoy restaurants. This is the only place I've noticed that offers bobs catering so that's pretty cool. However, they need to make better bobas... they were overcooked so much that the boba shape was no longer there. I've tried sesame matcha, which I I've never tried before. I do felt like sesame in the drink was a little bit more overpowering than Matcha. I wish the Matcha flavor was 50-50 with sesame flavor. They do have a very small space outside for seatings but it's more of pick up and go boba place. If they can work on their boba texture, I would try it again.

Yelp
Finally got to try this place yesterday and it was pretty good. I remember when there used to be a location back at Plaza Bonita, so it's great to have this here with all the favorite flavors (and some new ones). Staff is friendly, and the food/drink came out very fast. Ended up with the All I Avo Wanted which was good but I think I was actually craving sweeter drink (next time!) plus the Japanese egg sandwich which was delicious. I didn't realize it was pretty much an order and pickup place, but there some seating outside if you want to stay there which was a plus. I did get lost a little bit as I wasn't sure where it was in the lot, plus the store name signage wasn't up. Overall, great visit and hope to try more flavors soon.

Yelp
Loved the milk tea. The regular milk comes with a standard earl gray tea unless changed. Favorite of the trip. The matcha berry was good too. Boba was not all round which was a bit different for me. The lemon grass tofu bahn mi was really good. Not used to mayo in my bahn mi but it felt right. Location is all the way on the corner of the plaza. Very small and intimate shop. Might be hard to find at first. Service was good. They have a self order kiosk with a bunch of customizations. Love the half size of topping options.

Yelp
We discovered a Boba and Banh Mi shop in our neighborhood today. They focus on using natural and homemade ingredients, even for the boba, which was perfectly chewy and delicious. I tried the Thai Tanic, and my friend got the Thank You Berry Matcha --both were amazing! Looking forward to trying their food items soon!

Yelp
Sorry this review is NOT about the drinks, which are their focus. I'm just not a Boba guy, but as this place just opened in my neighborhood, I want to support a brand new local business. Plus, I do like banh mi, so it was an easy choice. I wanted to love it, but ended up just liking it. The sandwich was surprisingly light on the carrots, cilantro, daikon and sauce: chunky cucumber dominated. But still FOUR STAR worthy because the baguette crunchy good with *lots* of yummy pork inside! I suppose it is all what you are used to in your barn mi. Also, my wife had the rice plate with grilled chicken and she loved it! So as you can tell, this little take-out spot well worth giving it a try, esp. if you live in the area. Next time I have to try the bao, but you can go for the boba!

i'm so sad that Poppy isn't in rancho bernardo anymore! but i came to check out their new location and it was good as always!

Yelp
I used to work in the Plaza Bonita mall and Poppy Boba Kitchen was always my go to, so I was very sad when that location closed down. Their lemongrass tofu Banh Mi is my favorite food item, but I always went for the frozen hot chocolate! This drink has a very special place in my heart and I'm so happy they put it on their permanent menu! The service is very sweet and welcoming as well~ This location is more of a walk-up and order type of establishment. There's no indoor seating, but a few tables outside! I'm very happy another location opened up closer. Please give this business lots of love and support !

Yelp
This is what a Boba Drink should taste like! Tastes like the name, Taro! No heavy dyes or excessive sugar added. Natural and whole. The chicken Banh Mi was quite delicious too.

Yelp
Noticed a new spot for a banh mi, passed by a few times and finally had a chance to try. I am soooo happy I did! I had the grilled pork banh mi and a rose tea hibiscus drink. Omg Amazing!!!!

Yelp
Just ate at Poppy Boba Kitchen for the first time today. It's a tiny little hole-in-the-wall place. But usually those are the best as they have to rely on food quality and service; not ambience and flashy marketing. The owner asked me if this was my first time ordering from them. It was. So she told me they make everything from scratch, except the baguettes. They even make their own boba balls. I ordered a Bahn Mi with grilled pork. She told me they grill the pork over a real flame and it looked like it: nicely char-grilled with a pleasant smokiness. The pork was nicely marinated and moist. The hot jalapeño was nicely balanced by an un-pickled cucumber slices. I think she told me they make mayonnaise. The baguette was soft on the inside and wonderfully crusty on the outside. While eating it, the baguette shot pieces of crust all over my shirt and the table like a meteorite shower! What a mess!!! But what does all that add up to? The best Bahn Mi I've ever had in Clairemont over the last 32 years in living here. And better than any Bahn Mi I've had Linda Vista nor Mira Mesa. Yes, it's that good. It's a little tiny place next to Enzo Ink in the Carnival grocery store shopping center. It's great. I'm going back soon.

Yelp
This is a new business to the neighborhood. The food is amazing. Personally addicted to the THIS.... If you don't know what to order, follow this recipe; tres leches matcha with matcha boba, and egg pudding. It's like ordering the best matcha drink and flan! They came together for a wedding ceremony in my mouth. I am obsessed with this drink. The chicken bahn mi is a whole different experience. Personally I like my jalapenos to be on fire and this place always delivers the HEAT. I think I know where they get their Jalapenos from and I approve. This combo will have any person with food standard asking for more. This place will kill it when they open a drive-thru!!! Much love to the staff who is always pleasant. Don't blink you might miss the door. It's small but mighty!

Yelp
I recently ate here and became very sick afterwards. I couldn't even finish my food. I don't think they store the meat properly . The manager was very rude to her employees and not professional at all. I will definitely not be eating there again.

Josephine H.

Yelp
Very impressed with this new boba location. The service was amazing and the cashier even gave us matcha boba to sample. The boba itself was super fresh and you could tell it was definitely made on-site. They use all-natural ingredients but charge the same as most boba locations. I got a version of a Tiger Milk Tea with brown sugar boba and it was not only delicious but large in size! Overall, would recommend this spot. The only complaints I heard were from some family members who had gotten smoothies, and they said the drinks lacked flavor. I admit my drink was not super sweet, but for me it was just right. I will definitely be revisiting.

Haley H.

Yelp
All the ingredients are all natural and so fresh! They had such great customer service and helped you find a drink that fit your tastes! Can't wait to continue trying all the drinks they have to offer!
