The 13 Best Underrated Bakeries in Los Angeles | Eater LA

"Brittainy and Matthew Turnquist operate this cozy bakery out of Sierra Madre (Brittainy’s hometown) where a daily quiche is always on the menu. Carefully peruse the display case stuffed with sandwiches, croissants, and multi-grain bread before deciding what to buy." - Mona Holmes

Google
Ownership has changed hands. My Apple Bear Claw has 0 apple and 0 apple flavour. 10.50 for this and a coffee. By 9A, not many pastry or bread options available. The line was too long to stand to request for a refund.

Google
Poppy Cake has been one of my favorite local bakeries since they opened. However, they have new counter staff that is not friendly. At first I thought it was because they were new, but they aren’t friendly to regulars or anyone. They just ring you up and that’s it. What really got me was that this morning my baby was happily waving to them and one of them just stood there with no response at all. I get it, not everyone is a baby or kid person, but how do you not wave back to a baby that is just learning the world around them. It makes me want to go in less. I will say that the afternoon staff in Wednesdays have been working there for a while and they are friendly and actually have customer service skills. Avoid the morning I guess if you’re looking for good customer service.

Google
A great bakery, full of yummy baked items, prepared meals to go, breads to take home, sandwiches, salads and yummy desserts. I always stop here when I'm in the Sierra Madre area. They offer baked breads and prepared entries. Prices are a bit high, but worth every penny.

Google
Good smoked salmon sandwich 🥪 Delicious cinnamon roll! Huge icing, had to even leave some on the plate. ☺️ Cozy atmosphere, old people around talking life savings and divorce agreements 🤣 in a good way.

Google
we were actually on our way out of town and suddenly had a craving for a pastry of some kind as it was too late for breakfast but too early to grab lunch and we weren't all that hungry. we were literally driving by when we saw the building and sign and decided to pull over across the street and walk over. i don't remember exactly what kind of small sandwich my partner ordered but they were pleased and it hit the spot for them and not being too full afterwards. i ordered the blueberry muffin which was delicious and they even warmed it up for me.

Google
Deviled egg salad sandwich was good. For the price of $12.50 I don't think it was worth it since it hardly had any egg salad, only lots of greens but I loved the taste. I would come back but only for the pastries. :)

Joann R.

Google
Been there only once during Wisteria festival. Their pastries sell themselves they look and taste delicious!

Google
The salmon and avocado toast is my go-to. And if you're looking for desert, their chocolate chip cookie is delicious.

Yelp
This is a small and cute bakery in the area. I came by during Valentine's Day. One of the ladies was decorating the window with Valentine's Day theme. We ordered the coffee cake and almond croissant. The croissant was very fluffy and crispy. It is one of the best croissant I had in the US, it reminded me of the bakery and croissants I had in Paris. Servers are very helpful and friendly as I asked them for recommendations of the pastries. Will come back again for more croissants! Street parking is available.

Yelp
I came here and got a cinnamon roll and wow was it delicious. Sure the frosting is a little sweet but I just took the extra off. The staff was really nice and helpful. There was so much I wanted to try but didn't have the room for. I'll be coming back and especially to try that fried chicken.

Yelp
3.4 stars I stopped by after having breakfast next door. I think this is a great neighborhood bakery with a lot of prepared foods and baked goods. While the bakery case is filled with an abundance of sweet pastries, I found the savory baked foods to be lacking in number. I only saw butter croissants and the cheddar and chive biscuit. I ended up getting the biscuit ($4) and it was pretty delicious! The beverage menu didn't really catch my eye, so I didn't get anything. Service was decent. The interior is simple and neat. I would come back if I'm in the area.

Yelp
Delicious sandwiches and pastries. Also picked up a quiche Lorraine and a lovely salad to go. Instant dinner!

Yelp
(+) Chocolate chip cookies (+) Matcha Latte Poppy cake baking company is a bakery/cafe that serves breads, pastries, sandwiches, and even take-home dinners. The quality of their products is what makes them one of the best in the area. I had a family get together and we brought over the chocolate chip cookies, which everyone loved. The quantity of chocolate chips was perfect and the cookie was soft and chewy, but still had a firm outer layer. The matcha latte was also great. They do offer milk alternatives, as I elected with oat milk. Next time, I will try their sandwiches. Do yourself a favor and try their freshly made pasties and drinks.

Yelp
By far, the BEST almond croissant I have ever had! This place is worth the drive even though there really isn't any place to sit, it's more of a grab & go bakery but again, worth it. The croissant was so flaky & buttery and loaded with almond filling, it had to weigh a half pound, plenty for two but why share, it's too good.
google avatar

Yelp
I don't know why but this place reminds me of the show "The Gilmore Girls". The people that work here are always kind and helpful. I recommend the Chicken Pesto sammie on a baguette and buying their loaves of bread!
google avatar

Roman S.

Yelp
This place does not respect their employees I walked in and it was extremely hot the ac felt almost non existent and I can only imagine how the employees feel especially them being in the back with ovens on I would definitely steer away due to poor employee treatment

Yelp
Credit Cards: They're accepted. Restrooms: No restrooms here! Coffee Program: Lamill Coffee Roasters. Bread Program: They make their own bread daily either at this location or at their sister location in Arcadia. Tip Of The Review: Come towards closing, they might toss in a extra pastry. :) Location/Parking: Located on SE corner of W. Sierra Madre Blvd and S. Lima St.. Next to Pantorium Cleaners. Parking can be found along W. Sierra Madre or in the neighboring streets. Ambiance/Decor: Neat ambiance with neat modern wooden furnishings (About 5 tables inside) Service: Service was great! Grant was friendly and attentive. With his fluffy words about the irish soda bread, I bought 2 and included 1 free one for the road. Pastry Of Choice: Even though they ran out of almond croissants and bear claws, that didn't deter me from ordering something else. I decided on the irish soda bread. Never had it before, but absolutely loved the biscuit texture and had a subtle sweet flavor. Probably would taste better if it was heated. I'll ask next time if they can heat it up. Poppy Cake Baking Company For Thought: Wouldn't mind coming back to try their other pastries and sandwiches.

Yelp
Absolutely love the food and vibe of this place. But PLEASE maybe consider getting a second checkout stand/register for call ahead/online orders. The line can get quite long.

Yelp
Absolutely obsessed with this place. My bf came here from New York and we randomly went one day and we both cannot stop thinking about the food from here. First, the deviled egg toast is INSANE. Second, the pastries are some of the best pastries i've probably ever had in my life. The cheese danish is a must, so delicious. Everyone was super nice in here, quick and easy service. The place was adorable as well with various places to sit, super chill vibe. Love love love, will absolutely be back.

Yelp
Found out there was a location right by my work and came specifically looking for their almond croissant. Mission success. Their almond croissant are fantastic albiet pricey (similarly priced at other bakeries) but oh so delicious. I paired it with their Arnold palmer (it was hot AF that day) and it was so-so, i've had better. Would i get it again? Likely not and will try something else. Will have to try their other pastries next time and a coffee when i get a chance. Definitely try their almond croissant!!
google avatar

Yelp
Their almond croissant is a must. It's buttery and perfectly sweet! You won't be disappointed.

Niree S.

Yelp
Yes! This bakery is truly a gem in Sierra Madre! Their cheddar and scallion biscuits are amazing! I love their croissants and if you time it right, you can make it in time for their freshly baked baguettes! They also have lemon poppy seed cakes and peach pies and other assortment of goodies. Everything I've tried here has been tasty! I've also tried this iced coffee which is decent as well. Not a lot of seating as it is a small bakery but definitely a stop to make when you're in town!

Sona M.

Yelp
I absolutely love this bakery! Their desserts, pastries, sandwiches and bread are all amazing. I have not had a single thing there that I wouldn't get again. I just tried their pumpkin danish and pumpkin loaf hands-down the best pumpkin dessert I have ever had you need to really go and give those a try.

Randy C.

Yelp
Sandwiches are really good, but services are lacking. Awhile back - I called to place an order for 2 sandwiches about 15 minutes before closing, but they refused to my order. I explained that I'd be there quickly because I was only was just around the corner. They still refused my order. I walked in and ordered in person...they didn't look happy. I guess they wanted to close shop early. I will never give them my business again.

Yelp
Came here after eating at Nano's next door and I'm glad I did ! I was surprised when I saw the display area bc there was a big plate of fried chicken surrounded by the pastries lol. You don't see that often in a bakery lol. I ended up getting a piece of chicken, chocolate chip cookie, kale salad and my daughter got the peppermint chocolate mouse. Everything was really good! The chocolate cookie was thick, soft and with a crunch around the edges, the kale salad was well seasoned I loved that they put almonds in it and the mouse was creamy with just the right density and peppermint! I will def be back here soon!
google avatar

Margaret C.

Yelp
I loved the smoked salmon sandwich - tasted fresh and was one of the best I've ever tried! If you're in the area - I highly recommend going there. They have lots of pastries and they're friendly! :) oh, and they asked what kind of bread I wanted which was great

J V.

Yelp
Tasty but lots of wasted packaging. Beware one-time use plastic and aluminum, even when eating on premises. No recycling containers so the stuff is probably going to landfill. Very nice service. So try asking for minimal packaging when ordering.
google avatar

Davina F.

Yelp
there are NO WORDS for how GOOD these pastries are! I would tell you my FAV one...but I don't want them sold out anytime I decide to make the Trek from Hollywood to Sierra Madre
google avatar

Kimberley K.

Yelp
I enjoyed my cup of matcha latte (COLD) at this location except that I was quite surprised that I couldn't get it hot. They only serve cold drinks??? I wanted my matcha hot but they served it cold and on ice instead. VERY restrictive when it comes to milk choices. Not really a coffee & tea place

Jay L.

Yelp
A crushing letdown. I did not want to write this review. my experience demand I share my visit. I heard great things about this bakery. I entered and placed an order for a croissant and a muffin to go. Nothing to cook. Nothing to heat. Easy. So far so good. And then things went South. After taking my order - this lady who is either the owner or manager - proceeded to set about slicing bread, making coffee, chatting with employees. I watched this lady do everything but place my food into paper bag and take my credit card. Instead, I stood there waiting for almost 10 minutes. I did the not so subtle clearing of the throat. She glanced over and kept chatting with employees. It was wild to see her in action. Another employee asked if I'd been helped. I said, yes and then waited another five minutes. Finally, I walked out. Empty handed. Disappointed. Rarely does one encounter this level of poor service. I hate to review negatively any business, but this was egregious. At Poppy Cake the customer comes last. I really wanna come back and taste the food but this person who I hope is just the manager and not the owner is a disaster when it comes to customer service.

Yelp
Having survived an emotionally traumatic experience (please see my review for Mt. Wilson Trail). I felt that I needed a treat. I saw Poppy Cake Baking Company nearby and decided to pop in. I wanted to try some poppy cake, natch, but was told that it only comes in loaves. I was advised that the Apple Bear Claw is a popular choice for a breakfast pastry, so I ordered one with a side of coffee. The Bear Claw was indeed fantastic, light and delicous. And the coffee was great, too, with no bitterness and full of rich flavor. If I lived in the neighborhood, Poppy Cake would be one of my regular haunts. Five stars.

Yelp
I was in the area and yelped any bakeries in Sierra Madre and glad to find this locations! Well everyone greeted right away, maybe because I'm not Caucasian. She didn't even acknowledge me. The lady looked at me like I don't know, just not welcoming. Def not the young cashier in their 20s. I'm talking about the older lady who packed the order. Like I mentioned before I came first and she ignored me and took the order for the Caucasian first. Well oh well. I to be honest love their sweet things more compared to their sandwiches. I tried their salmon toast I believe and it was so salty, like very salty I couldn't even finish. However on the other side the cheese danish, almond croissant, chocolate croissant so yum! Price little bit higher but also the size is big enough and I'm sure they use good ingredients. I also bought their ham and cheese croissant and the mustard flavors so strong. Again maybe it just my preference. They close around 3 pm and open pretty early. You can also make a phone call, on the weekend they runs out item pretty fast. Just call ahead of time and they able to keep it for you. 4 star def for the bakeries, the taste and quality. I would give the service 3, because the lady who took my order was kinda rude like I don't belong there to order, I don't know maybe I'm not Caucasian. But still I give 4 star for the quality and taste. I wish they read this and treat people same without seeing color of the skin.

Alan M.

Yelp
I'm not crazy about most of their baked goods, I guess I just have weird tastes, but their sandwiches are terrific. I love those.

Lauren R.

Yelp
I normally love this place and the pastries are so tasty and fresh, but had a really unappetizing experience when I found a bug in my sandwich today. I normally share a sandwich with my daughter and she kept saying "mama bug", which I didn't understand until I looked at the sandwich half she was eating and sure enough there was a fly. Hope they start to wash their lettuce going forward because that's pretty gross.
google avatar

Sanjay G.

Yelp
Great coffee and amazing pastries! The almond croissant and bear claw were fresh and flaky. The regular coffee was flavorful and low in acidity which I like. I'd like to try this plane for lunch as the sandwich and salads looked delicious.
google avatar

Tammy T.

Yelp
3.5/5 This is solid local spot for baked goods with friendly staff. The atmosphere is very cozy. I tried an assortment of their sweet pastries and a loaf of bread. All of them seemed house made and fresh baked but I didn't find a favorite in terms of flavor. I wouldn't travel far for this bakery but if you are in town by all means stop by and grab a snack. Primarily free street parking. (Read the signs)
google avatar

Margaret P.

Yelp
I love that this coffee shop opened up in Arcadia! They've got delicious coffee served by Lotus (Sierra Madre) and Lamill (Silverlake) and ridiculously yummy baked goods. They've also good sandwiches, yogurt, and salads all prepackaged for you to enjoy on the road! The people here are so friendly and are so excited to serve the SGV community. I ordered an almond croissant and a cold brew. I tried to not eat the whole croissant, but it was so dang good, I couldn't help myself. They currently don't have any seating, but they mentioned that they're looking to add some in the future.
google avatar

Tiffany C.

Yelp
I actually came to this location of Poppy Cake Baking Company before I found out about their new Arcadia location! I stopped by on a Saturday morning with a friend to pick up some goodies - and they were super crowded. Like line out the door, ton of foot traffic, nonstop customers busy. That definitely reassured me that I had to give this place a try. They have a variety of baked goods as well as premade salads, sandwiches, parfaits, slices of pie, etc. You can also order from their menu of select sandwiches, salads, and coffee. Unfortunately they only serve the morning buns on weekdays (which was the item I had my eye on) and reserve the weekends for their cinnamon buns. Definitely must-try the almond croissant. It's fairly priced at $4 and although it's not my favorite almond croissant, it's pretty tasty and one I would order again. I actually really liked the powdered sugar and almonds on top of the croissant - the croissant was more crispy, slightly chewy towards the middle. I could have done with a bit more almond paste, but I would probably rate the croissant an 8.5/10. I ate it the next day and it was still just as good. They had half sandwiches already made, so I grabbed half a chicken pesto ($4.50 or so). I didn't eat this until the next day, and surprisingly the bread was still pretty soft. I think they added a drizzle of oil to the bread, so eating that with the chicken and pesto and brie cheese was pretty tasty. Wouldn't mind ordering this again next time. I also tried their artisanal toast (rosemary lemon slice with butter and strawberry jam) for around $4-5 (not too sure of the price). Thought the price was a little high, but the bread was super tasty. Honestly the butter and jam weren't too special and probably something I could do myself, but it did taste good for a breakfast treat. They're located on Sierra Madre Blvd - plenty of street parking and residential parking. Bakery closes fairly early right now (3 PM), but I believe hours are extended in the fall. Great bakery to check-out if you like pastries and sandwiches!

T C.

Yelp
Very expensive. Three-bite sugar cookies are $2.50, which feels astronomically overpriced. The interior is clean and service is decent.
google avatar

Karina V.

Yelp
Coming home from Paris within the last couple weeks, eating the best croissants in the world and now was left with the urge to hunt for the best croissants locally. Poppy Cakes almond Croissants are it!!! Perfectly flaky layers inside with crispy exterior. The place itself is very clean & the service is friendly. Their prices are comparable to other boutique bakeries. $5 for my almond croissant
google avatar

Dave J.

Yelp
It's too bad that the attention to detail when they're making our sandwiches is so poor because the food here is great when they get it right. The last four times we've placed Mobile orders they got it wrong, which resulted in me having to take the food back and ask them to correct it. Each time they have been very apologetic and provided us with free cookies, one time and refunded our money another time. Both of which were very nice gestures, but we would prefer just to have our orders correct the first time.

Chloe B.

Yelp
This is usually my go to place for baguettes, but I bought 4 this morning and a croissant and the total came to 32 dollars. The baguettes were extra small today, and 7 dollars a loaf seems a bit extreme.

Christy F.

Yelp
It is a cute little space with a good array of baked goods, though none vegan. If they could do one vegan muffin or cookie, the bakery would stand out for me.
google avatar

Jessica A.

Yelp
Stopped by for some coffee on the way to the dog park. Coffee selection is limited got a regular iced coffee with some oat milk. The real winner was the cheese danish super flaky pastry the cheese is very mild and the jam really took over. My fiancé tried the Brie filled French roll which was also delicious. Airy and topped with sea salt. They had a large selection of ready made salads, etc. good place to stop by for a little snack.
google avatar

Vanessa R.

Yelp
Love this place. Been coming here for years. I stop by every time I'm in the area and love to take my friends here. I recommend the chocolate chip cookies and their cinnamon roll. 10/10!!
google avatar

P M.

Yelp
Delicious pastries and fresh sandwiches. Especially Italian and tomato and burrata. Very friendly staff.
google avatar

Destiny C.

Yelp
Super cute cafe. They have an assortment of pastries and breads to choose from. The almond croissant is my favorite. Their coffee is tasty and strong. Ask for extra milk if you like your coffee lighter like I do.

Des C.

Yelp
TL;DR: Croissants here didn't have the flaky layers I expected, and the rating seems overhyped. Ambiance is nice, service is okay. So, I rolled up to this spot, all excited about the pastry and croissants. Now, don't get me wrong; they weren't terrible. But they weren't those flaky layers of heaven that I usually associate with a stellar croissant. Also tried another bread , pastry and it's a bit dry to my taste. I couldn't help but feel that maybe the rating here is a tad overrated. For all you croissant enthusiasts who are willing to indulge at this price point, here's a tip: consider taking a drive to Burbank and pay a visit to "Lou The French On The Block." Give it a whirl and make the comparison. On the bright side, the ambiance was nice and clean. As for the service, it was, well, nothing to write home about. Not outstanding, but not terrible either. OK if you happen to be in the area but I'd suggest not going out of your way. There are other options in Pasadena if you want some close by also.

Yelp
A long time ago at work, someone brought in goodies from Poppy Cake. I made it up in my mind that I would have to go one day. I had a pumpkin bran muffin I still dream about. I was hoping on this random morning my family and I went to Poppy Cake they would have a bran muffin but they didn't, whomp whomp! However, my hubby surprised me with a yummy avocado toast, morning bun, and fried chicken !!! The fried chicken is BOMB !! The chicken more than made up for my bran muffin craving. Looking forward to another random morning. PS: I saw some reviews about the coffee being weak. For your information, I love the coffee. So there !!
google avatar

Jessica Y.

Yelp
I didn't see a parking lot but there was parking on the street. Not too bad. I tried quite a few things - Iced passion berry tea, a bitter croissant, cinnamon roll, avocado hummus and a loaf of multigrain bread. I have nothing bad to say haha....so so delicious! To top it off whrn I entered in the morning the rack of breads was empty but when I asked the lady said the breads were on the cooking rack. Wow baked fresh....just came out of the oven! She said she wpuld chevk and if they were cool enough she would slice it for me. It was soft and chew just the way bread should be. The other pastries were just as great. And the avocado hummus had chunks of avocado. Seems everything they make are from whole ingredients which I just love about them. I will be back!
google avatar

Traci K.

Yelp
I think this bakery makes good breads. As well as pastries and sandwiches . It's not cheap but it's fresh. The sourdough could be more sour!
google avatar

Cindy K.

Yelp
Updating my review here as the quality of their coffee seems to have gone down. The cold brew tasted over-roasted and brewed too long. They also don't have any espresso based drinks - no cappuccinos, lattes, cortados etc, only hot coffee and cold brew. At least one of the staff was maskless when I visited as well. If you are just looking for baked goods, this is a decent choice. But I would go elsewhere for coffee.
google avatar

Laura C.

Yelp
I love, love, love Poppycake Bakery! My only 'complaint' (if we're to call it that) is that they always seem to have run out of their stellar lemon-rosemary bread by the time I arrive. It's obvs a crowd-pleasing favorite. I think I need to get myself in there much earlier. :-D My favorites: the Chicken Pesto Sandwich, and the beautiful pecan bars (photo below.) And, may they always sell the divinely scented Salted Grapefruit hand soap and hand lotion. Nothing else like it! :-)

Yelp
It was that time of month last week and I was craving an almond croissant like you can't imagine. It felt like a matter of life or death so I quickly hopped on Yelp looking for the best almond croissant in the area and up pops Poppy Cake Baking Company. The reviews looked good, the pictures looked even better, so I loaded my cramps into the car with me and off we went to find this life-saving almond croissant. Poppy Cake Baking Company is in Sierra Madre and there's plenty of street parking all around it so I parked across the street and walked in to a bakery that smells like heaven. Unfortunately, as great as everything smells, the flavors did not match. Both the almond croissant and the chocolate croissant I was given were burned and the almond croissant was burned so badly on the bottom that no amount of almond filling could make up for that taste in my mouth. The same is true for the croissant in the ham croissant breakfast sandwich I picked up for my husband. The only item that was not burned was the apple bear claw but the flavor of that was just very mild overall and not what my husband was hoping for when it comes to a tasty pastry. I really wanted to love this place and I may be inclined to visit again hoping for a better experience, but when your cramps are trying to kill you and you just want one delicious thing to put your body at ease, it's incredibly disappointing to get things that are burned or just lacking in flavor. Sad.

Yelp
My daughter told us about this little gem of a place when we came to visit . We got a ham and cheese croissants and coffee , it was super flackey and delicious!!! Offer was really good also. The inside was super cute had salads also and few other things to shop .we will be back .

Yelp
Expensive!!! But great place to get baked goods, pastries and morning grub. I pickup stuff from there for a spread when people are coming over.

Yelp
Best. Chocolate chip. Cookie. Ever. Was trying the gluten free diet for health issues so my mom brought me the gluten free cookie while in the hospital and I have never been so happy than after I gave birth. When finding out gluten isn't the problem she brought a normal one equally amazing but preferred the gluten free one. POPPY PLEASE COME TO THE VALLEY WE NEED YOU!!
