"Open daily from 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Pop’s Cafe attracts a steady crowd of Downey locals who arrive hungry and ready to fill up on biscuits ladled with obscene amounts of gravy, crisp-golden chicken fried steak, and Belgium waffles topped with enough butter to cover every divet. The vibe inside is classic diner Americana with monochrome black-and-white tile floors." - Cathy Chaplin, Eater Staff

Google
Not so positive but it’s important people know. We visited Pops Cafe. It was a terrible experience. Over the past few months the food has been mediocre. We’ve tired to be understanding but this experience is not acceptable. I ordered the ABT omelette. My wife ordered blueberry pancakes with eggs. And my son ordered Belgium waffles with fruit and a side of gravy with biscuits. This is the size of the omelette i recieved. No bigger than a jack in the box taco. Actually even smaller. Eggs are expensive you may say? Well this dish is now a whopping $20.00. Yup. They raised the prices 40% across the menu and are serving this up. A hair was found in my wife’s eggs, food that wasn’t ours was being brought to our table multiple times, my son’s biscuits were served cold and mushy, they also didn’t add the fruit to the waffle. Multiple items had to go back. When the omelette was remade the waiter sarcastically said it was made with 5 eggs for you. Yet the difference was definitely not seen. When I spoke with owner the next day all she said was I wasn’t there and they should have offered you to take some items off the bill. You’d think she’d offer it then? Nope. She offered us some drinks on the next visit and was reluctant to talk about the food that we received every time i brought it up. In other words because she wasn’t there she couldn’t help me. The owner gave off an impression like she knows she has a mass volume of clients so it didnt bother her. The waiter just kept apologizing over and over with each mistake. Didn’t even address the hairs in my wife’s eggs. Unbelievable.

First of all honorable mention to our Server Ivan, outstanding customer service and super nice! Now the food! I had the chicken fried steak, country potatoes, scrambled eggs, and pancakes, perfectly perfectly (yes I said it twice! 🤣) seasoned, perfect cryspyness on the outside (is that even a word? 🤣) and moist inside. Each bite was better than the last one, how is that even possible!? 🤣 Anyways 10/10 recommend! But don't take my word for it y'all should check it out!! 👍

The wait was long for a cute place but I honestly dont think the wait equaled what the food was worth. Dont get me wrong, the food was good, yet I still think I couldve gone down to the local burger place to get same type of diner food with less wait time.

Ambiance: Fairly small inside, felt more like a diner than a cafe to me, though. I think they did a great job with the setup making table close but not crowded. There wasn't much decor, but it was nice and clean. Service: Great service, though we went on a fairly busy day, we didn't have to wait too long for a table. We never had to find our server or wait long for requests. They were very kind and attentive! Food: I enjoyed my meal, the waffle was fluffy and a good texture, bacon was perfectly crispy, and my Hash Browns were cooked well. Overall I liked this place, I was not amazed but I was satisfied. Parking is kind of annoying, and the lot is slightly small.

In town for a quick visit & had time for breakfast. All employees were welcoming. Prices are reasonable. Food was very good. Service was exceptional. Venue fills up quickly so come early. Would highly recommend

My "go to" breakfast spot for out of town guest. No wait on Friday morning, weekends are packed. Our server, Ivan a local Warren grad , was GREAT! He made suggestions and accommodated every request. The deep fried French toast had sweet crispy edges with a soft buttery center. My guest enjoyed her country gravey covered steak, potatoes, and egg cooked to perfection. The servings were larger and the prices were fair.

Yelp
I love Pops! My very first time here was as a jr college freshman at Cerritos, just started driving, so distance was not an issue. Now in my 40's and the appreciation for this establishment is real! I walked in on a Thursday at 11:30am thinking it's during the week, it'll be nice and slow..lol. The house was packed, I was floored! I wanted so badly to take a video because it was unreal! I had a 12:30pm appt across the street so I began to get a bit nervous... I sat myself down at the table nearest the exit so I could bee line jt when I was done. I ordered a coffee right away. Shortly after the waitress came back and took my order. I asked her what the time frame was to get my food. She said it would take 5-10 min. The entire time she had a beautiful smile on her face and her demeanor was very warm, as in she enjoyed working there- which is a breath of fresh air. My food came right as she said it would and it was perfect! A bit later she checked on me again and even told me she'd get my check out as she knew I was in a bit of a hurry, which I totally appreciated her anticipating my needs!!!! As I was eating my food all I could hear was tons and tons of conversations and laughter, as if it was one big party, no one was on their cell phone. I stopped and looked around and every table was full and the people at the tables looked happy to be in one another's company and no one seemed to be there on their lunch break. All these customers appeared to have the day off and sincerely just enjoying a meal at Pops cafe. I recalled walking in to the restaurant and how quiet the street was and then being in Pops cafe- it was like transporting from the busyness of life into a realm of peace, joy, and love. It was surreal, it really was. Maybe I had time to think on all of this and observe because I didn't have any company, but I wasn't lonely. The service was great! The food was delish! The ambiance was love. Whatever you're doing Pops, keep it up!

Yelp
Food was good. However, I wish all the dishes came out at the same time. I ordered the French toast. Received the eggs first, then bacon and last the French toast. By the time French toast came all was cold. That's another thing it was cold and no heater on, they kept the door open. IT WAS COLD. We also ordered the pancake stack. It was good, but cold.

Yelp
Well Pop's is a busy diner that was a clique favorite of older generations. They were consistent and it had a social feel at decent prices. They were diligent-but their reputation really kept them in the cool clique with those born 1940's-1970's. I got tired of going as there wasn't much change and it felt old-and tooooo familiar-like the show Cheers. I like change, variety, and humility. Food became a bit boring. Their reputation kind of ballooned and we stopped going totally. Besides it can feel crowded, loud, and impersonal with jolly smiles drowning out a simple meal. A solid meal, but overplayed. If you like privacy, this is not the place-great place for extroverts and politicians.

Nicholas B.

Yelp
Great food! Place was packed! Staff was friendly. Will Be coming back when I am back in town!

Laurie D.

Yelp
I met a girlfriend here for breakfast this morning. We wanted to try something different so, of course, I looked on yelp. The reviews for this restaurant were really good, so met here. I ordered the Corn Beef Hash with scrambled eggs and Irish potatoes. I was excited to see squaw bread as an option for toast, as I don't see it offered very often. If you love onions like I do, order the Irish potatoes. They come with onions and bell peppers on top of hash browns. I don't like bell peppers, so I asked for onions only. The potatoes were delicious! The corn beef was really good as well. The reason why I didn't give five stars is because the service was just okay. In fact, we had to flag down the server several times. The food made up for the mediocre service!

Joe C.

Yelp
I was only picking up my order to go. The food was amazingly. We had the Gourmet Omelette, country potatoes, sausage, squaw bread, single pancake, and it was delicious

Mike M.

Yelp
This place is conveniently located near my mom's rehabilitation center, so we pass by it after her bi-weekly therapy sessions. The food here is absolutely amazing! It's a cozy little café that serves delicious breakfast dishes. I had the huevos con chorizo, which comes with beans and rice, and those pancakes are to die for!!! oh my gosh!!!!! Lol. We usually visit during the week, so the wait time is under 15 minutes, but parking is limited, and the café is small. I've heard the wait can be up to 2 hours on weekends or busy days. I totally get why the food is so popular and affordable. Their pancakes are some of the best I've ever had, Denny's and IHOP don't even come close! Stop debating it and just come on in already!!!

Brandy R.

Yelp
Decent place. Decent food. Good service. I couldn't capture why this place is hyped up. But maybe it's just because it's been here for so long that it has become a local favorite. For me personally, I would have loved if some of their beverages were not all just syrup. A freshly squeezed orange juice beverage would have been nice to have. The food almost seemed to be bland in flavor. But overall decent. I think the best thing I had here was the tea.

Crystal L.

Yelp
I found this "pop diner" and felt it was friendly and regional. We were greeted and seated as soon as we arrived, and the menu options were endless. We opted for biscuits & gravy and french toast. (I always want to try French toast if it's available), but my son chose steak, potatoes and bacon. The food was great, but I recommend that servers slow down. Breathe in between reaching each table and moving around. I used to work at a busy restaurant, so I know how crazy it can be, but when we remember to breathe and smile, you'll be surprised how much happier you'll be.

Nancy L.

Yelp
Everything here is delicious and tastes so homemade! I asked for a special order once and it was made perfectly! Atmosphere is cozy and service is phenomenal! Downey Gem!

Luis H.

Yelp
unfortunately, this place needs new servers, new cooks, or just a new management. We got here at 11:10am and they told us 15 minutes. I overheard the host telling everyone 15 minutes though without really checking. I saw multiple people leave because of the wait. We were willing to wait and see if the food would be worth it. I'll tell you now, it's not. The service was so slow, I even got the menu before we sat down to be ready to order. Our waitress even commented "smart! So you can know what you want before you sit down." Yet it took her 15-20 minutes to take our order. It's a small restaurant with 3-4 servers so it's no excuse not to take an order. The food was uncooked and did not have any flavor. It's a disappointment to wait and get these results

Armida R.

Yelp
Customer service was terrible. The waitress didn't bring our utensils until we had to ask for them. The customers next to us even said "they haven't brought you the utensils". Brought our check when we were still eating. Literally that's what made me the most upset and not enjoy this place at all. I wouldn't even give a one star for this place but it's required for me to click one so had to click one star. First time and definitely last time. Thanks for the terrible service.

Gregory S.

Yelp
I've been here 3 times and only once was I actually serviced. Twice I was turned away they said it was closed, no reason given. The one time I ate here it was great, just wish I could eat here more often.

Dulce A.

Yelp
Great Service and great food ! Usually this spot is always busy , but today we decided to go at a later time (11:30am). We waited 10 min to be seated, our waitress attended us very quickly. We ordered a few items Fried Steak ( Very crispy and tender) the gravy on top was the star of the show. The eggs Benedict were super savory & the hollandaise sauce was creamy and not watered down, the ham was also well prepared. We also got a side of breakfast potatoes, and hash browns, both topped with bell pepper and onion. For our last items , we got an order of blueberry pancakes (very big) & French toast. Would deff recommend this breakfast/ lunch spot !

Juju A.

Yelp
Surprisingly a pleasant experience, first time diner! Ordered my steak medium rare and that's exactly what I got, and a decent size! With some chocolate chip pancakes on the side. Prices are fair, good service, and would go there again

Maricela M.

Yelp
Pop's cafe was great fast service, customer service was awesome ,breakfast burrito were good ..

Sherly V.

Yelp
We enjoyed our experience at Pop's! The overall ambiance was fantastic, the food was delicious, and the customer service was excellent. I ordered the Machaca, which was a delightful combination of shredded beef, eggs, bell peppers, and onions, served with Spanish rice, pinto beans, and corn tortillas on the side. The salsa was also particularly tasty. My boyfriend ordered the steak fried with gravy hash, brown, and scrambled eggs, and a side order of biscuit and gravy. Everything was equally delightful with no complaints. our server David was incredibly helpful and pleasant throughout our visit.

Estella S.

Yelp
Pop's did not disappoint! From the looks outside you wouldn't think so but don't let it fool you. Food was on point (chicken fried steak, eggs, bacon, toast, homemade salsa upon request, fruit, potatoes.....). Service was friendly and efficient. Never had to ask for anything including the reasonably priced check. Definitely come back!

Yelp
Absolute 5 star experience in every way. Delicious food, check. Fair value, check. Kind and attentive servers, check. This was an absolutely great breakfast, and we will return. If ordering the French toast, I'd suggest the deep fried. It was different enough and I think it out performed their pan fried French toast.

Tiffany M.

Yelp
One of the only good breakfast spots in Downey. My family loves this place. Wait staff is nice and attentive. Food is always good. Tastes homemade not like it's frozen or from a can. Love their pancakes, deep fried French toast. Chicken fried steak. They have three different types of breakfast potatoes to choose from for those who like variety. Today I tried the machaca. It came with beans and rice. It was ok. Meat was a little dry.

Vanessa G.

Yelp
Amazing Breakfast Spot...I can't believe I hadn't discovered this local gem until now! Denver omelette French Toast with Eggs Scrambled Eggs & Irish potatoes Eggs and Pancakes ...oh my the pancakes Everything was delicious and price was right! Definitely recommend!

Courtney L.

Yelp
In the middle of a random strip mall is Pop's Cafe. Don't let the outside deter you. Perfect, local breakfast spot. Sunday around 10am, put our name down. Waited barely 10 min. As soon as we were seated, waitress immediately took our drink order. Simple menu, but executed perfectly. Had the corn beef hash, country fried steak, hash browns and country potatoes. All were great! Outstanding customer service. Multiple employees checked on us, refilling coffee and just a friendly smile. True family restaurant. Definitely will be back!

Samantha Z.

Yelp
After I had my appointment I was looking for a breakfast place on Yelp and figured hmm let's try it out , normally place that stays open until 2:30pm for breakfast or brunch only is really good, as as we walked in we can pick any seat , service was fast and the food was soo good . I got the chicken fried steak and eggs , my husband had the New York steak and eggs with the hash browns. The chicken fried steak was really tender mostly I have it at other places and it's dry . Would definitely recommend coming here also has their pancakes but forgot the photo lol I did see another review about the cups how they looked all chipped around the top , I have mixed feeling about this .. yes they are a bit banged up but what do you expect it's a small hole in the wall place , or eventually replace them and just not be so harsh on the cups or a different brand . Other than that it's a great breakfast place, went around 10:30am

Moises A.

Yelp
Fantastic breakfast eatery. I lived in Downey for nearly eight years and didn't know they were here. Came with my kids and the service was excellent. Very well managed staff. Attentive and the food was great. Some of the servings would likely be large enough for two people to share. I'd highly recommend for a date or small groups. Parking can be spotty. Overall a great choice for breakfast.

Jamie C.

Yelp
All I have to say is WOW! My first time was definitely not my last. I ended up finding this place just by driving down the street, hungry bc I forgot to eat breakfast, saw the sign, and thought.... "My Pops usually make good food. Why not?" Upon entry the service was impeccable! Hands down the best service I have had since pre-covid times. No one skipped a beat!! I mean no one. The team service really showed and you can tell this place if for blue collars with zero time to waste. I'm a business owner, I had zero time to was a that day and I was so happy this place was on the same page. My waiter(s) recommended the gourmet omelette which was perfect and I subbed out cottage cheese instead of potatoes bc I'm Italian and thicc enough . Coffee was perfect! Great taste great temperature. Omelette came out fast and it was perfecto! I absolutely loved the car theme as, yes I am a female, but I grew up with my parents owning a mechanic shop, racing cars, and a junk yard was my first job as a parts puller. The place was spotless clean! Not a dirty table in sight. Menu prices reflect exactly what you pay for. I can not wait to go back to POPS! Thank you so much! Your place deserves a Michelin Star!

Joan A.

Yelp
Great place for breakfast in Downey. Excellent food at fair prices. Be sure to try the Irish potatoes!

Anna M.

Yelp
This place is a MUST try. Parking is limited, but It's worth the wait. Came here on a Saturday at 8 am and was seated right away, like at 9 ish people started showing up and by 9:30am it was crowded. The food and attention were great. Definitely returning.

Eduardo B.

Yelp
A comfortable old school breakfast joint. Friendly and efficient staff. Good value! Plenty of off street parking. Definitely coming back for breakfast when I'm in the area.

Sylvia S.

Yelp
If you happen to be in the city of Downey and are looking for a great American style breakfast, you need to stop by POP's Cafe. It's tucked away in the Rives shopping mall off Florence. The breakfast is AMAZING! I ordered Pop's country breakfast and it did not disappoint. Sausage gravy made from scratch not mix. My dad ordered the Denver omelette which came with country potatoes and pancakes on the side. Be prepared because they serve generous portions. Service was great as well. Server was attentive but not overbearing. Prices were very affordable especially for the amount of food your served. You can tell that this is a local favorite. I'll definitely make my way over again.

Danielle K.

Yelp
I've lived in downey my whole life and never been here. The outside wasn't impressive and neither were the floors' cleanliness or the bathrooms. Its your typical diner/cafe decor. So my expectations for the food were LOW!. BUT I WAS WRONG! The food was amazing!! Hot and fresh. I got the eggs benedict and it was cooked to perfection. The potatoes were also very good too - my husband helped me eat them cuz the portions were so generous! The service was welcoming and everything came out quickly. If i remember correctly my husband got an omelette and he enjoyed it! I would def come back and im sad i missed out for so long! But the cleanliness does need improvement.

Heather B.

Yelp
Wow this place is great! We came on a Sunday at 1pm and this place was busy! We checked in by writing our name on a paper pad. We were worried about the wait since the place was pretty small and we had quite a few people ahead of us, but luckily we got sat within 15 mins. Once we sat down we were greeted immediately by our server and got our drink order taken. They were very prompt and had a great attitude. Food was just as great. Everything was fresh and made to order. Eggs sausage and hash browns were FULL of flavor. I preferred my bfs pancakes over my French toast as they were much fluffier. It's a true quaint diners vibe. Small, crowded, smelt amazing and had 1950s automobile/traveling decor around. Would definitely recommend. Might want to try a weekday if you don't want to worry about a wait.

Karen C.

Yelp
Breakfast was really good and their customer service was great. 10/10 would go back. I was craving French toast and it exceeded my expectations

Rosa R.

Yelp
Very small diner but tasty food for sure. Service was excellent and they were fast . This restaurant is in a small shopping center and found it through Yelp. And I'm glad I tried it because the pancakes were delicious! Prices were also great!

Mario P.

Yelp
This is a little hole in the wall place, which means it's probably good and it is. This place is open for breakfast and lunch only. But if you're in Downey, it's worth a stop. The only thing is that it is usually very busy on the weekends so get there early. Ev3n being as busy as it gets the service is really good. I have no complaints about this place when it comes to breakfast. It exceeds some of the "higher" end restaurants that serve breakfast as far as taste and service. I love their biscuits and gravy. The bacon is crispy, the coffee is fresh, the house potatoes are tasty. The eggs don't look dry like they've been sitting under a heat lamp and the toast isn't chewy like

Juan C.

Yelp
The times I have been to pop's cafe before today were great- lovely service, food comes out super quick. Today I noticed a Trump 2024 sticker on the inside of the employee door on my way to the bathroom. As I was walking out, I said to an older man with white hair who works there that it should be removed. He did not take this well at all. In fact, he got so upset with me that he felt entitled to knock my hat off my head in the parking lot. After telling him I won't come back here in response to his "what are you gonna do?!", I get in my car and he goes on to kick the grill of my car. Everyone has a right to their views. No one deserves to be intimidated or have their property mistreated because of some words. This is not the first review for pop's cafe that talks about management's hostile attitude towards customers and even staff. I am looking forward to taking my business elsewhere in Downey.

Ralph W.

Yelp
Really good food and the service is always good. Sometimes you have a little wait but never long. The Ambiance is old school and really nice to look at. Great place for Breakfast and Lunch.

Haley G.

Yelp
Pop's Cafe is a gem of a restaurant that my family and I frequent every Sunday. We always order the country fried steak, eggs Benedict, and French toast, but honestly, you can't go wrong with anything on their menu. The biscuits and gravy, cinnamon roll, and breakfast burritos are also amazing. Whether you choose to dine in or call ahead for takeout, you're guaranteed a delicious meal. It's no wonder this place is always so busy - the owners are hard workers and great people. Don't hesitate to stop by Pop's Cafe for a fantastic dining experience.

Yazmin G.

Yelp
I recently had breakfast at Pop's Cafe all by myself, and it was a different but delightful experience. This small family-owned place has limited hours, closing by mid-day, but the food is worth it. I ordered the classic country meal: biscuits and gravy, hash browns, eggs, and a sausage patty sandwich. It was the ultimate comfort food. And their iced coffee is the best I've ever had. The friendly atmosphere and welcoming staff make it even better. If you're in the mood for a homestyle breakfast, don't miss Pop's Cafe.

Patrick W.

Yelp
This place is great! Fast, friendly service, great food and great atmosphere. The sausage gravy is excellent! Will come back when we're in the area.

Nea R.

Yelp
Great service! Great food!! We ordered pancakes, French toast, sunrise breakfast, biscuits and gravy! All delicious ! Will definitely come eat here again!

Denisse R.

Yelp
Delicious food! We come here often and try something new on the menu all the time. The service is amazing. It's a cozy place and lots of regulars.

Gail B.

Yelp
Pop's is, hands down, the best breakfast in Downey. We come as often as possible for the tasty eggs, perfectly crisp (without being burnt) bacon, awesome pancakes, friendly service. Despite being pretty crowded every day, waits are not terribly long, because the kitchen has it together and the servers are on top of things. Portions are generous, prices are affordable - I cannot think of a single bad thing to say. Do yourself a big favor and have breakfast at Pop's!

Nur N.

Yelp
Excellent quick service, delicious food. This was my first time here and def will not be my last. Great birthday breakfast.

Breitling G.

Yelp
Love this place best biscuits and gravy hands-down if you're in California, especially in Downey California you need to stop by Pops Café the best biscuits and gravy good service. Good people get a free cinnamon roll if you put a Yelp review. Rally is a very good server.

Samantha D.

Yelp
Service is great from most waiters the food is fantastic and the prices are affordable

Maryssa G.

Yelp
10/10 do reccomend amazing service and food I got the eggs hashbrowns and bacon but I forgot to take a picture my boyfriend got huevos rancheros and let me tell you from the hospitality down to the food. Everything here was amazing.

Sylvya C.

Yelp
This great breakfast place in Downey is new to our family. I LOVE to eat breakfast and Pop's was a name that I had heard of but had never had the opportunity to eat there. You know the food is good when there is a line on a Wednesday at 9AM! I had the omelette and Andres ate the Chicken fried steak and eggs. Excellent food and the price is reasonable for the value.

Victor M.

Yelp
Over rated spot not worth it place needs new servers, host food just seemed bland like people say its just hype
