New England Restaurant News, Updated Weekly (Winter 2020) | Eater Boston

"One of three Portsmouth businesses participating in a 'hanging coffee' initiative modeled on caffè sospeso, allowing customers to pre-pay an extra coffee to be claimed later by someone in need as part of a local mutual-aid effort." - Rachel Leah Blumenthal

It was the worst latte I had in a long time. It had horrible after taste. We asked for it not to be too hot. It was hot as lava. There was no foam. It was just awful on every level. I would never go back!!! We thru it out after few sips. 5 min later and I can still taste it. Ughh.

Google
This is my favorite place around to get coffee. The large feels like getting a bucket of iced coffee. It's perfect. The breakfast sandwichs and options, also perfect. The staff is always nice to us. There is a single stall restroom. Inside and outside seating.

Google
Great local coffee spot! Oct. 2023 Update: Established in 1992, Port City Coffee Roasters has been a mainstay of Portsmouths caffeine supply. Located in a convenient spot, this coffee shop has a quaint feel with exceptional coffee and amazing staff. I'll be looking forward to coming back here every time I'm in the area. Easy 9/10

Google
Might be the last coffee shop I haven't really been to in NH. I like it. Very similar to others. Grabbed some Bali Blue Moon and some Espresso. Coffee is a Chocolate Raspberry bean coffee with oat milk. Very good and not sweet at all, all delicious coffee flavor.

Google
I love the Shipwreck coffee, a robust medium blend. I drink gallons of Morning blend at home. A small local coffee shop with the owners often there working away. THAT's my kind of coffee shop!

Eric P.

Google
This place was the best. The coffee in New England is pretty bad, but this place actually had pretty decent coffee. Definitely better than Dunkin. But the bagels... The bagels are amazing. ...and the different, homemade flavored cream cheeses are so much better than all that other premade stuff. I recommend the dill pickle, banana pepper cream cheese (literally just chopped up pickles and peppers mixed I to cream cheese).

Google
THE BEST coffee in Portsmouth, and there are a lot of coffee shops in Portsmouth! Been coming here for years now and never had any coffee or experience that was less than stellar. One of very few places around that actually roast their own beans too. Oh and they have an awesome selection of nondairy milk options – including macadamia nut milk (my favorite!) I was in earlier today getting some Capone beans (highly recommend and I believe it is also their best seller) and asked if they had any lemonade. And they did not, but they immediately volunteered to make me one from scratch and proceeded to make me one of the best fresh squeezed lemonade’s I’ve ever had! This is such a representative experience too- I’ve always had a phenomenal service and the staff is regularly willing to go above and beyond. Seriously, it really is the best coffee shop in a town FULL of really good coffee shops. I cannot sing their praise loudly enough!

Google
Great coffee shop with a small food menu within a few mins of the Seacoast Greenway’s northern terminus

Krissie P.

Yelp
Very convenient and this is my new go to coffee place! I wish the bags used for coffee beans had the one-way valves to keep the beans fresher longer but other than that fantastic!!

Yelp
Port city Coffee Roasters is the morning coffee spot! The service is always great, the people are so nice and efficient obviously like any coffee shop there are peak times where you may have to wait a minute or 2 for a coffee sandwich due to the influx of other people but the sandwiches are always hot and delicious and the choices of coffee are supreme. I highly recommend you try this place out if you haven't yet.

Yelp
Really unfortunate experience here, which is a bummer because the interior is so cute! There's submitted dog photos posted everywhere, bathroom is super clean but doesn't lock, and there's lots of merch. Also the employees are really friendly, and there were some gluten free pastry options. First for the food: we ordered the egg/cheese/sausage breakfast sandwich, and a BLT. The BLT did not have ANY tomatoes on it, little lettuce, and there was no mayonnaise either (even though it was a listed ingredient) which made for a very dry sandwich. The egg/cheese/sausage sandwich was also very disappointing. The cheese was actually cold, as if they'd added it on at the last minute, and the whole thing falls apart when you pick it up (croissant bread + scrambling eggs doesn't really work). We were also baffled by the panini press marks on the croissant that flattened it down? I don't understand the point of putting it on a flaky croissant if you're going to flatten it and make the sandwich super soggy. We were really dissatisfied. The pastries were just okay. The gluten free chocolate donut was pretty run of the mill for gluten free items, and we had no complaints. The Boston cream donut, though, had filling that tasted more like thick sugary frosting than an actual puddingy cream? The coffee was just fine; got a dirty chai latte with oat milk for $6.50, which tasted a bit too sugary without spice but overall fine. Also ordered a house roast coffee that I can say good things about; it was probably what we enjoyed the most. There's a large selection of coffee beans to choose from, and it seemed to have a lot of pastry options (but when we arrived at 10:30 on a Monday, they had limited options). If you're going for a wide coffee selection and pastries, this place could be worth a stop, but otherwise I'd skip for somewhere else.

Yelp
Good coffee, delicious breakfast, and Lovebird donuts. They are not conveniently located and their setup is not optimized for efficiency. I suggest that you plan on a to-go order and stay if there is room. The service was excellent when not crowded. They need to work on their speed of output
google avatar

Jamie C.

Yelp
Pleasant service, nice location, but I was served what is a very poor excuse for a bagel! It tasted like low quality bread dough shaped into what looks like a bagel.
google avatar

Syd G.

Yelp
What a cool little coffee shop. It's very warm and inviting inside. The two girls working were so friendly and helpful. Loved the coffee and didn't get a chance to try their food.

Nicole F.

Yelp
The staff are pleasant and friendly. Many items to choose from. Great smell of coffee. Delicious food.

Erin P.

Yelp
Great local place for coffee! Super friendly staff. We buy our flavored beans here for home and also come frequently for a drip coffee and breakfast sandwich. Indoor and outdoor seating also!

Yelp
Bad coffee. Espresso tasted horrible. Not sure the workers knew what hat they were really doing.

Yelp
Service has really improved. Have returned to buy their Sumatran dark roast beans which are excellent. And I love their holiday sale for beans. I just wish they were opened later than 2PM.

Tom S.

Yelp
Great staff. Great coffee.... WiFi sucks. I love my coffeeshop. , But very frustrated when it comes to internet service

Matthew W.

Yelp
Attentive staff and great choices of snacks and beverages. The first coffee shop I have gone to in Portsmouth, and I keep coming back.

Glenn B.

Yelp
Coffee at its Finest I get the Nicaraguan whole bean and it's Organic even if they can't say so.. medium roast high in Chlorogenic Acid so I get my organic Keto Coffee without getting raped online

Tatum C.

Yelp
i love this coffe shop! so convenient and ive never had an item I did not like. service is great community is great!

Erica S.

Yelp
It's always a delight to pop into Port City Coffee Roasters. Prompt, friendly service, and high quality coffee and food options.

Nicole S.

Yelp
Tried this place twice to give it a fair chance and although the staff is nice the coffee is just not great unfortunately. I really wanted to love it and I got lattes both times, two different flavors and both were just sweet tasting milk.

Michelle M.

Yelp
quiet cute little coffee shop in the heart of Portsmouth but just outside of downtown coffees lattes hot or iced sandwiches and always a rotation of different baked good or snacks. always there to make your order right and with care and love. never had a bad experience. not to mention if you are a regular rewards program is like no other really good program actually and makes it worth using it not just once every 6 months you might get $1.00.

Joe H.

Yelp
Best roasted beans on seacoast ( iMO ). The sit down people watching part not there strong suit

Yelp
my friend buys/brews this coffee, and i love it, but today i stopped in to the shop for the first time. the iced coffee i had was the best i have had in i don;t know how long, and the service was fast, efficient and friendly. i can't understand the negative reviews, the coffee here is awesome. easy parking, and the interior was clean and modern. can't wait to go back and sign up for their rewards program!

Yelp
Stopped into this coffee place completely by accident when I found out my "go to" place for coffee had closed down. What great karma. I enjoyed a latte, expertly prepared with an extra espresso shot, and my travel partner had what she said was the finest cinnamon honey steamer ever made! They also have a terrific variety of whole bean coffees, including many exotic beans from around the world grown and harvested by sustainable, organic coffee farms, and all hand roasted onsite. I chose a pound of espresso and a pound of Bali Blue Moon, a medium roast that I am very much looking forward to brewing. The owner is friendly and clearly loves what he is doing. Do yourself a favor and give this place a try. You won't regret it!

Yelp
Have been going to this shop since 1997. One fine gem of local coffee roasters(Portsmouth has a few great local small batch roasters). Staff is always friendly helpful. Many different regions and roasts. Lived in the area until a few years ago, fortunately they ship. The Capone is an amazing blend and roast. How many times have I picked up my weekly supply and felt the bag still slightly warm "let them sit for a couple of days to fully develop the oil". God bless you

Yelp
The coffee is pretty good at Port City Coffee Roasters which is located in the back of the Gallagher's Place strip plaza. This small coffee shop serves up a good variety of hot and cold drinks including coffee, espresso, cappuccino, latte, tea, chai, bottled drinks, baked goods, soup, salads, and breakfast & panini sandwiches. Several varieties of fresh roasted coffee beans are available by the pound. I enjoy stopping here on a warm day for the Iced Mochachino and Frozen Mochachinos which are very refreshing with a very smooth and sweet taste and goes very well with a large chocolate chip cookie. NOTE: There's very limited seating inside and few tables outside along the sidewalk out front. WEBSITE: http://www.portcitycoffee.com

Yelp
My bagel was blackened to a crisp, inedible. Coffee was burnt too. The people were nice. If you burn someone's food, try again guys.

Yelp
Three stars because I've been going here a couple years (mostly because it's convenient) but they need to work on getting orders right, especially when allergies are involved. I've been here enough that most of the employees know what I order and that it is gluten free. Unfortunately, I have asked for gluten free bread and been given regular bread on several occasions and have gotten sick because I trusted that I was getting what I paid for. My coworker has had a similar experience with their dairy allergy. If you have an allergy, be careful when you go here because they are not.

Amanda N.

Yelp
The coffee here is awful. Don't waste your time or money or time on this place. Yuck.
google avatar

Carolyn D.

Yelp
A cute coffee shop with easy parking. All the staff were so kind and my food and drinks were made perfect. Highly recommend.

Ray F.

Yelp
The iced tea lemonade is nasty. Very bad lemonade to tea ratio. Also their latte is just too strong. Needless to say we threw away $11 and went to a Starbucks, which we are not fans of, instead.
google avatar

Lancer K.

Yelp
Panini's are good. Baristas are nice. The environment is comfortable with tables and soft seats. They only have paper cups and the lids like to jump off the cups, so don't wear your nice clothes while drinking coffee in the car. In fact, don't drink in the car with hat lid. The coffee was OK but not great from an old Rancillo. Maybe the espresso extraction wasn't good (but I wasn't watching) and grind not set right. They roast right on location. The cost of coffee is low.
google avatar

Francois L.

Yelp
For many years now the fine people at Port City have been supplying espresso coffee for our home machine. It is the best. Look no further. We have tried Coffee by Design and others.
google avatar

Katie W.

Yelp
It's been a long time since I have been here but I always enjoyed stopping in since it's a location that is easy to get in and out with parking. Coffee is worthy of 5 stars and the service is worthy of 1 so I'll settle at 3 stars. Seriously, how standoffish can you actually be. I'm not a big fan of employees who have zero personality and act like they are entitled to your money. Not even a thank you just a sarcastic "have a good day". Oh well. Plenty of other coffee shops in Portsmouth who would like my money!
google avatar

Christopher O.

Yelp
Good selection of drinks and food however, the staff wasn't very polite. We weren't greeted, register is right at the door when you walk in and you can't even see the menu unless you get out of line. They should should really hire some older folks with customer service experience not young college girls with have their minds on other things other than work. Not impressed that dogs are aloud inside. Better service at "white heron"up the street.
google avatar

Gary B.

Yelp
Have been buying my coffee here for 4-5yrs, A very impressive local coffee shop with excellent products and helpful staff.
google avatar

John K.

Yelp
I haven't tried the food yet, but the coffee is good and comes with all the accouterments to which one becomes accustomed.

Jonathan B.

Yelp
worst customer service. completely negative experience with confused staff. i ordered a iced americano and got a half filled cup of cold brew ... wth tried to explain to the woman working what a americano was while the barista looked angry. won't return here

Tony C.

Yelp
My wife, my daughter and I stopped in today after being on the road for a while. We order two iced teas a bagel with cream cheese and the albacore sandwich (tuna salad sandwich). The food and drinks were delicious and made on the spot. The atmosphere was relaxing and just what we needed after a long drive. If I didn't live two hours away, they'd be my daily go to for breakfast and lunch. Thank you for the great food, hospitality and good conversation!

Christian D.

Yelp
Insipid. How fitting. This was seriously the word of the day for August 3, 2018 from the calendar that sits on the counter where you order and pay. The two blonde women working here on this day were insipid. I got scowls when I walked in. Never a smile. Never a thank you. Just insipidity. I was robbed for $4.09 for a "large" iced coffee that was not very large and as an added bonus was treated to service with all of the following adjectives. I can even think of a few more adjectives. One begins with a c and rhymes with hunts. Shame on you, owner for creating this atmosphere. Fire these two lackluster workers. White Heron is just down the street and so are many other places. Avoid this place. It has mediocre offerings and insipid service. Lifeless and shameful. Insipid (in·sip·id) adjective...lacking flavor..."mugs of insipid coffee"I synonyms: tasteless, flavorless, bland, weak, wishy-washy; More lacking vigor or interest, unimaginative, uninspired, uninspiring, characterless, flat, uninteresting, lackluster, dull, drab, boring, dry, humdrum, ho-hum, monochrome, tedious, uneventful, run-of-the-mill, commonplace, pedestrian, trite, tired, hackneyed, stale, lame, wishy-washy, colorless, anemic, lifeless "insipid pictures"

Yelp
Great coffee, and strong. I had a small red eye made with their Indian Malobar, very good. Toasted sesame bagel with humus and I'm out the door. Ample seating, friendly staff but it could be a little cleaner.
google avatar

annie w.

Yelp
Really good coffee. I got the Rainforest something or other, and it was rich and flavorful (no, really) without being acidic. The people at the counter were friendly and knowledgable. Low D bag quotient.
google avatar

Caleb Y.

Yelp
Good coffee...not a great place - cramped and boring. But, again, the coffee is good!
google avatar

Greg B.

Yelp
Place is definitely outside downtown, and in a shopping plaza. Hate to say it, but I found the coffee to be too hot and a bit mediocre. It was acceptable and drinkable, but I would rather get my coffee elsewhere when I'm in Portsmouth again.
google avatar

Ann B.

Yelp
Cafe looked good from the outside, the inside is 'ok' in terms of ambiance. My big hangup -- I don't get why businesses can't establish clear demarcations for "order here" and "pay here". Myself and my friend came in for a quick cap & americano, people are standing everywhere and there was one girl at a cash register - not sure if she is taking orders or receiving payment. So an altogether unpleasant experience, we purchased nothing more than my cap since it was a virtual impossibility to order. It took over 10 minutes in 2 lines to pay (coffee making excluded). Cap foam, nicely done. Espresso - a bit bitter. Drank the foam and threw out the coffee.
google avatar

Aaks L.

Yelp
Was visiting Portsmouth NH and was looking for a coffeeshop not in downtown and I'm so glad to have found this place. Tucked away in a strip mall, the coffee, banana bread and bagel with cream cheese here were good for a quick stop (and it is very rare that I like non-Starbucks coffee)!

T B.

Yelp
Ugh. I hate when I go to a coffee spot and I feel like I am bothering the staff. Like, I could totally just make coffee at home...and probably should. But I like the experience of it all. And that's where this place comes up way short. There were three women working here and none of them had any personality. If they added someone with a bright smile and cheery attitude I bet this place could become so much more. For now don't expect much from the paycheck collectors. Coffee is good. Didn't try the food. Didn't want to bother them any more 10/15/18 Update I stupidly went here again assuming that the owner might pay attention to these reviews and improve things. Nope. The staff is just as rude if not ruder. What a joke. I hate loser business owners.
google avatar

Lovely L.

Yelp
I am not impressed with this coffee roaster. I did not think the barista's produced a well executed espresso. And frankly they weren't that friendly either. There was not honey as a sweetener option. The beans bite be very well worth it. I didn't try them. I won't be going back.
google avatar

Kellyanne L.

Yelp
This little coffee shop has a cozy feel. The people who work there are very friendly, and I love the decor. The place is also very clean, including the bathroom. I don't tend to go for coffee shops, because I'm not a coffee drinker. I went in there to see if they had unsweetened iced tea. I found that they had THREE flavours - regular, ginger peach, and raspberry. I tried the ginger peach, and it was delicious! I wish they had better hours. I tried to go here one evening last week and found that they were closed. They're only open until 6pm weekdays and 5pm on weekends. Also, their prices are a little steep. A small iced tea was $2.50, and a large (20 ounces) was $4.
google avatar

Rich G.

Yelp
I love their Capone roast and get a 1/2 lb. every week($7.00). You can't beat local beans. Service can be spotty though, and the space isn't very big. Neither of those things will keep me from returning, however.
google avatar

Heather D.

Yelp
Let me start by saying that the coffee is great, the selection is fantastic, and the food is really good. The problem is the current customer service - BIG TIME - these ladies are just miserable people and outright rude. I hate saying this because I really used to love this place (and as far as the "product" goes, I do when it comes to that). I just wish they would just let go of the staff and hire new people that enjoy what they do and treat people nice. Again, such a bummer writing this because I really like everything else. I just think customer service is just as important and there should be a LOT more effort here. Good luck getting any of them to say hello or your welcome... or *gasp* thank you. They brighten up whenever the local cops pop in - that's about it.
google avatar

Evan P.

Yelp
I have been a regular here for a few years because the coffee is good, they roast for a couple other shops I frequent and enjoy the product. Today may have been the last time. Over the last couple years I only go in when I have a solid fifteen minutes to get an iced coffee. The service is abysmal. The setup is prohibitive to effective service. The staff is occasionally cordial, not a necessity for me as I just want to get my coffee and be on my way. When the staff are only able to do one thing at a time, i.e. make a sandwich or an espresso drink, it takes FOREVER to get an order in. Today waited eight minutes and neither of the two baristas even acknowledged I was there before taking two people in front of me. (Shame on them for not asking if someone else was first.) I walked out empty handed for at least the third or fourth time this year. I'm over the time suck of this place.
