Yelp
We drove from the DC area to the winery, as we had a Groupon. This was our first venture to the Southern tri-country area of Maryland. The drive seemed a little long, but it's the same as going to the Loudon area from where we live. There were a lot of farms and even an Amish settlement along the way. Seeing it was fall, there were a lot of little roadside stands set up, selling pumpkins and the like.
We arrived at the winery, and there were two staff members who were busy with customers. At first, it took a second to get settled in and start on our tasting, but this is understandable, seeing they were wrapping up other clients. As another Yelp reviewer mentioned, the winery is a co-op, so the farmers can be the ones serving you your tasting. This happened for us, and it made it more interesting to have the grape grower doing your tasting with you.
I'm not too much of a wine snob, so take my reviews of the wines with a grain of a salt. I like reds; I like sweet; and I like Chambourcin and Cabs, to be specific.
All of the wines went down well - very smooth.
The Whites: I even enjoyed the whites (particularly, the 1634 Chardonnay, the McIntosh Run, and the Breton Bay Breeze). The McIntosh Run goes down dangerously smooth. We bought a bottle of it, seeing it seemed 'seasonal,' and wouldn't you know, it's 25 percent off! We bought a whole bottle of local wine for $10.50 - that's basically unheard of in Northern Virginia!
The Autumn Frost was a good dessert wine.
The reds were also good. We ended up buying the Chambourcin (their biggest seller) and the Captain's Table (a smoky red that was pretty interesting). Both bottles at full price were still priced lower than Northern Virginia wines . The wines vary from about $14 on up to $26 for their premium wines.
The staff was friendly. The indoor tasting area was nice. The outside patio wasn't quite like siting in the mountains in Northern Virginia, but nonetheless, it was nice to sit outside with a glass of a wine on their patio. The patio was kept up well with pretty flowers. I did subtract one star for location, and wish i could only subtract a half, as it isn't something they can really control.
There is a park adjacent to the winery, so you can take a walk along the creek there. It was an enjoyable 5 to 10 minute walk. Also, they do kayaking/wine trips, if you're interested.
It was nice to explore a new place, and visit a winery. I can't comment on their tasting fees, seeing we had a Groupon. The Groupon included 11 tastings for two people, the glasses (no one lets you keep these anymore!), and a bottle of wine. I think she had mentioned to another client that they had 6 tastings for $5, but don't quote me.
Again, if you're in the area, don't miss it. Or, even if you want to take a day trip out of the city, I highly recommend it. There's a state park on the tip of the peninsula with Civil War History, some family 'fall harvest' farms, beaches, seafood, etc.
