The Best BYOB Restaurants in Houston | Eater Houston

"The name of this Mediterranean and Italian-inspired restaurant literally translates to “bring wine.” Porta’Vino has its own tightly-curated selection of bottles, but you’re welcome to bring your own, starting at a $12 corkage fee for the first bottle, minus a dollar for each consecutive bottle after that. Corkage for beer is $1 a bottle." - Minh Truong

"Porta’vino, the relatively new bring-your-own-wine restaurant from longtime Houston restaurateur Bill Floyd, has been sold as part of an ambitious expansion plan. Floyd has sold the rights to the concept, which opened at 7800 Washington Avenue in March 2020 and has done business at a steady clip ever since, to Woodlands businessman Greg Brenneman." - Brittanie Shey

I had an exceptional dining experience at Porta’Vino. The service was outstanding, with attentive and friendly staff who made us feel welcomed from the moment we arrived. The Black Truffle Rigatoni was absolutely delicious, with a rich and indulgent flavor that left a lasting impression. However, I did find the portion to be quite small for the price, leaving me wanting a little more of that exquisite dish. The Pepperoni pizza was a perfect balance of crispy crust and flavorful toppings, and the medium-rare brownie was the perfect ending to the meal – warm, gooey, and incredibly satisfying. Overall, the service at Porta’Vino made the experience even more memorable. While the Black Truffle Rigatoni could benefit from a larger portion, the food, service, and atmosphere make it a place I’d definitely return to for another fantastic meal.

This is now my favorite BYOB restaurant, hands down . Modern looking, simple interior design with good food and service . We ordered pizza , lasagna , the balloon bread and Mac and cheese . I would skip the Mac and cheese but everything else was great .

I absolutely adore Porta’Vino! Since the very first visit, this gem has never failed to impress me, no matter the occasion. The moment you step inside, you're welcomed with warmth by the host, setting the stage for an unforgettable dining experience. The wait staff is attentive and quick to offer refreshing water as you settle in. And when it comes to ordering, they make it a breeze with fantastic recommendations for the special of the night! You simply can’t miss the shrimp appetizer; it’s a must-try! For the main course, indulge in the mouthwatering veal, succulent flatiron steak, or the delightful sea bass—each dish is a burst of flavor! Remember, Porta’Vino opens exclusively for dinner, but there’s plenty of parking to make your visit easy. With both indoor and outdoor dining options and the BYOB concept, it’s the perfect atmosphere for a night out! Every experience at Porta’Vino has been nothing short of amazing, and I can’t wait to return again and again!

Picked up two deserts to go. Charged a $5 handling fee that wasn’t disclosed ahead of time. $5 handling fee on $18 of desert is a 28% markup. Pretty uncool. Shame, the food here is solid and the staff are friendly got gotcha fees like this are a huge turn-off.

Google
The best of the best. The calamari is the best in the city - perfectly fried, great sauce, not exceedingly greasy, great seasoning - you have to go to New Orleans if you want to find another calamari this good. But really everything that hit the table was perfect. The wine list is maybe the best value list in the city… every bottle is fantastic, you can’t go wrong, and you won’t over pay. They take care of folks here. If you trust me, you’ll go, and you can thank me later.

Google
This place rocks. We go probably 3 times a month. Great for date nights, dinner with friends, or just a Tuesday night meal. Wine prices are sometimes better than HEB. The sea bass is my go to meal, but the short rib is to die for as well. Have not had a bad meal ever. The patio is great if you are in the mood for dining alfresco. Yes, it looks over the parking lot but not the road and the road noise is nonexistent. When you go be sure and say hello to the owners Bill and Charlene. Nicer folks you will not find. The shrimp appetizer is plenty to share with 4. And you gotta get the balloon bread at least once.

Google
I decided to treat my friend to some authentic Italian cuisine and chose Porta’ Vino's Heights location for its better views. Best decision! I give it an 8/10. The food and location are great, and the service was good. Our waiter took a bit to take our order, but he made up for it with excellent service afterward. The GM also came out to our table, adding a nice touch. I loved the BYOW policy, perfect for non-alcoholic drinkers, as I brought my own non-alcoholic wine. For a high-quality, authentic Italian experience, this hidden gem is a must-visit.

Google
Great food, great service, wines are reasonably priced. There is a $12 corkage fee if you bring your own. Only minor annoyance, and it's something they have no control over, is if you're seating outside there is a very active freight railroad track right next to the building. Some might be annoyed.

Yelp
My friend group and I are huge fans of Porta'vino. We've hosted three large group dinners and each dinner was flawless. What first attracted us to Porta'vino is their BYOB policy. It's $12 for the first bottle and decreases by $1 for every subsequent bottle all the way to $0... When you're hosting a dinner for 6 to 15 people who are known to show up with a case of wines on wheels, this system is affordable - and we appreciate that. We've done everything from family-style dining to hands-off-my-plate... Favorites include the cured wild salmon, arancini, truffle pasta, margherita pizza, cacio e pepe mezzaluna, sea bass, scallops, and milkshake "no minor." Everything we tasted is high quality, and they take pride in the fact that everything on the dinner menu is less than $30. There's plenty of parking, patio seating ("swamp fans" provided during the summer), and great service....

Yelp
Exceptional! I wish I'd gone sooner. I'd heard amazing things and finally got there for a great dinner. Most impressive was the beyond attentive and helpful service. Literally everyone we came across couldn't have been friendlier. From tasting and selecting a reasonably priced bottle of wine to being practically the last ones to leave, they couldn't have made us feel more welcome. And it's so refreshing to see reasonable wine prices! The menu looks great. Loved the seasoned chickpeas. And the delicious pizza that's also available GF. The adult dessert was so delicious and I don't like sweets. Atmosphere is modern and relatively casual in a pleasant way. It's a must try. I haven't had great service like this in years! And they are opening a lounge nearby soon.

Yelp
With its very reasonable wine price and option to bring in your own wine, Porta'vino always managed to stay packed and busy no matter which days of the week. Good location with plenty of parking. Been here couple times for weekday dinner and had the chance to try out different things on the menu. This place has a fancy casual vibe (but with a slightly fancy Italian price tag). The crowd tend to dress up a bit, but in the mean time you are sitting on metal chairs in a pretty crowded and slightly loud environment with classic rock and country music in the background. Now the food... For appetizers, Calabrese Crisp Shrimp is probably the best thing on the menu (4/5), the Cured Salmon Carpaccio is also solid but nothing special compare to other places (3.5/5), the Polpette has good flavor but could be dry (3/5) For the main, I tend to enjoy their freshly made pastas more compared to other dishes. Wild Boar Bolognese (5/5) this one is my favorite, very good flavor and texture. Beef Tenderloin (4.5/5) tenderloin came out medium as ordered and the dish tasted very good with the peppercorn sauce and mushrooms. Black Truffle Tagliatelle (3.5/5) nice truffle flavor but could taste slightly blend. For other dishes, the Sea Bass was fresh and moist (4/5), however I was disappointed with the Veal & Risotto (2/5) the veal was pretty dry, and the risotto was blend. Although overall experience has been enjoyable, if you are not looking for a wine night, there are definitely better pasta/Italian spots in town.

Yelp
This place is amazing!! Also had Demond as our server and he was great! Gave perfect recommendations and even better service! Definitely coming back!

Yelp
I recently dined aand had a chance to sample their cheesy macaroni and truffle fries for starters. While both dishes showed promise, they left me wanting more in terms of flavor. For my main course, I opted for the sea bass, which was remarkably fresh and paired with veggies. However, considering the size of the fish, I found myself wishing for an additional side to complement the meal better. I managed to enjoy a bit of their pasta, which was quite good. On a positive note, the desserts we tried were a delightful surprise, truly delicious. The standout of the experience was the excellent service provided by the staff. Though the dining experience was enjoyable overall, I find myself unsure about returning to this establishment. As a lover of robust flavors in Italian cuisine, I felt that the dishes fell a bit short in satisfying my taste preferences. Despite this, the prospect of indulging in their delectable desserts does offer an enticing reason to consider giving it another shot in the future.

Yelp
Always reliably excellent, good vibes! Owner Bill Floyd is usually there welcoming the many regulars! On our rotation last few years

Yelp
Bueno. Gustoso. Saporito. A wonderful recommendation from a patient. From start to finish , our amazing server Jacob took care to make sure our meal was nothing short of perfection. Starting off with a Patz and Hall Chardonnay 94 points paired with an arrancini appetizer. DELICIOUSO!! Jacob explained why there were few choices of wine by the glass as the markup for wine was very low and you can buy a bottle or a case if you choose at this wine bar& restaurant. We decided to split a specialty vegetarian pizza with spinach , artichoke, red peppers and feta. It came out fast , on a heated plate with a perfectly cooked thin crust. Wonderful way to spend Mother's Day evening and we will certainly be back!!!

Yelp
I would highly recommend you ask for Austin to be your waiter. He was amazing and made the evening truly memorable! Austin came by and kept chatting with me as I waited for my date that was approximately 20 minutes late. Once my date decided to arrive, Austin walked us through the menu and the concept of the restaurant. You are able to bring your own bottle of wine but there is an uncorking fee. After getting some suggestions from Austin, we picked a very nice Pinot Grigio. The wine is uncorked at your table and is brought with an ice bucket to keep it chilled. We started with the Arancini Risotto Balls. These were really good. I would have liked more of the marinara sauce that it's served with. For the main course we both picked the Wild Boar Bolognese. This dish was absolutely amazing! Austin told us it was one of his personal favorites and it became one of my favorite all time dishes. There was not one crumb left when we were done. Austin asked if we would like desert and we told him we needed a minute as we did want something sweet but didn't know if we had the room for it. A few minutes later, he brings us two small cake cookies with powder sugar on top. Again he said these were one of his favorites. They were the right balance of cake/cookie texture. This ended up making us wanting more sweets. We asked Austin which was better the coconut cream pie or the milkshake shot. He hadn't steered us wrong yet. He told us the coconut cream pie was a very popular item but the milkshake shot was also one of his favorites. We decided to try both. Proceed with caution with the coconut cream pie, it is great but it's also a large serving. The milkshake shot was a nice balance of sweet with a kick of liquor. I'm looking forward to going back. This might become my new first date spot as the ambiance is perfect for it.

Yelp
Porta'vino is located near our home and we go there to enjoy Italian food paired with lots of wine variety. My wife had house chardonnay and I had house pinot and paired them with mushroom pizza and shrimp scampi. It was a perfect night! If you love wine and they also sell wines in bottles so you must give it a try! Server was very nice and friendly and I always love their interior l, but also their outside seating when the weather is just right!

Yelp
I realized this year I sent to pick Italian for my birthday each year. This years lead to me to having balloon bread for an appetizer which was great with the dipping sauces. We ate it too fast for a photo. The waiter popped it for us not to burn ourselves My main course was the lasagna. It was adorably crafted in its one pan along with great bread. My husband had the spaghetti and meatball which as you see came out in two piles. Great for portion control if you have self control which we don't. Everything was topped off with a great wine list that the waiter knew well. An after dinner treat of a mini milkshake along with warm chocolate chip cookies. Overall the food was great. There was plenty of open concept. I'd say it wasn't the most romantic of spots. However I enjoyed the people watching. You had folks in everything from dressed up to looking a lot more causal. I'd probably stick to the middle.

Yelp
There have been two times in my life where I've been completely blown away by a bite of pasta - once when I was a kid with my first table side pasta and the second time at Porta'Vino with their Black Truffle Tagliatelle. The flavor is beyond AMAZING - very rich and decadent, easily a 9/10. What brings it up to a 10/10? Adding in some sort of protein to help balance out this extremely rich dish. My husband got the pasta with the addition of scallops ($6 per scallop) and I got the double-cut smoked pork chop. While the pork chop was overall decent - the crust on it was too tough to eat and it was a tad dry. However, mixing this pork chop with pasta - Pure. Freaking. Magic. It was phenomenal and I couldn't scarf it down any faster. In lieu of or in addition to protein, a glass of wine with its aciditiy would also likely help balance out this rich pasta dish. However, as this place can be quite pricey, we did not get a glass of wine and instead opted for the balloon bread ($12) that comes with a delicious chimichurri got an appetizer. While this was delicious and fun to try, I don't think I will get this again. As far as the atmosphere, it feels modern with a touch of homey without feeling pretentious. The service was excellent and everyone was very friendly. There was also plenty of parking, but we also arrived when the restaurant opened at 5 pm. If you're going to dine here during prime dinner hours, I'd recommend making a reservation. Give this place a try, you won't be disappointed!!

Yelp
This place is incredible. First the wine prices are often cheaper than the grocery store or liquor store. Incredible! And amazing wines too! The service is stellar. We had Maury as our waiter, and he was just the right amount of attentive and also really seemed nice. The food! Oh yum the food. We started with two appetizers. The steamed mussels and the salmon carpaccio. Oh Lordy. So good! And both were brought out with more bread than was needed. Contrast that with other places I always have to ask for more. One of our friends is a foodie. Very hard to please. And he kept complimenting the food too. We all got different dishes, and all were really good. The scallops with risotto, though, were exceptional. One of the best dinners I have ever had. They gave us free little adult milkshakes. Yum. We also got tiramisu to share. This was good, not great, but I really shouldn't have ordered it anyway so... I'll forgive them this. And the owner even came over to ask how our meal was. I will be back. Highly recommend.

Yelp
You just can't go wrong here! Incredible selection of wines. We had a liter of Austin Hope and enjoyed it to the last drop! Love the frito misto to start. I tried the mussels which were light and flavorful. The bolognese is always a favorite at the table but if there is a seasonal pasta dish I suggest trying it. Margarita pizza is a classic and comes with just the right char on the crispy thin crust. I prefer dining Al fresco here especially on a cool night. The patio is dog friendly :)

Yelp
Decided to try Porta'vino when we had a rare opportunity for date night. We made last minute reservations for a Saturday night and were able to find a table! We were promptly seated even though we arrived early. Staff was very friendly and had great food recommendations. We ended up going with the salmon carpaccio and black truffle pasta with scallops. Both were very tasty! Their wine list is phenomenal - with prices to match. I'd even say it might be the same price as you'd find at a liquor store, which might be enough reason to go to Porta'vino by itself. Great concept, I'll definitely be back!

Yelp
My husband and I hosted a rehearsal dinner for our son and his fiance at Porta' Vino last Friday evening. The event was absolutely perfect. The food is exceptional. We enjoyed the bruschetta board, meatball appetizers, salad and a choice of several entrees. Our servers were friendly and attentive, providing good recommendations. We have received so much positive feedback about the evening. Highly recommend.

Yelp
September 4, 2022 came in from Galveston for the day and this was the last stop It's been open since March 2020 which was the beginning of COVID so, given that it's only around a year. It's got a lot of seating inside and out. (Dog friendly outside only) You can BYOB wine for a cork fee. They only have like 5 wines they sell (by the glass) and none that I wanted; otherwise it was all bottles. I tried a beer, Stella Artois...YUCK. My friend got the artichoke and spinach pizza (they're all 10 inch) it also had green/red bell peppers on it too. 8/10 Plenty of parking, it's a big warehouse looking bldg next door to Volvo dealership

Jim S.

Yelp
We have a great time with friends. I had the baked fish with roasted Potatoes. My wife had lasagna which was excellent. The service was great and the facilities are nice. Get a little loud inside. Try the patio.
google avatar

Jingyan Y.

Yelp
Yum! First time trying this restaurant out and it was great. The short ribs, braised in wine was delectable. The flavors were rich and was easily complimented by a nice red wine. This is the dish the waiter recommended and I would definitely get it again. The brownie was rich but not overly sweet. A great end to a nice dinner. Service was impeccable even though the restaurant was very busy (packed during peak evening hours) Parking easy in the lot next to the restaurant The dishes are a bit pricey (~25-30 for main entree) so I would save this spot for a special occasion Note that it can get loud in the restaurant, and there is outdoor seating but it is definitely hot in the summer out there!

Yelp
I attended a surprise birthday party at Porta'vino. I wasn't even familiar with this place, but there's two locations (the other one is in The Woodlands). We had hors d'oeuvres while we waited for the birthday girl to arrive. I forgot to take photos but they offered meatballs (polpette), shrimp, and bruschetta with pepperoni. I noticed that the menu heading said "Happy Birthday" which was a nice touch. It was a prix fixe menu where we were able to choose three courses (salad, entrée, dessert) for $65. For my courses I had: Ella's Caesar Salad: It had capers which was a nice touch and it had just the right amount of dressing to give it flavor without making the salad soggy. Veal & Risotto: The dish was tasty and the portion was larger than it appeared. I loved the asparagus that came with the dish. Milkshake "No Minors." The milkshake came with a chocolate chip cookie. You could taste the booze in the shake but we couldn't figure out what type of liquor was in it. The ice cream tasted like soft serve. It was good, but a little thick. They put two straws in the jar which helped. The private room was at the back of the restaurant right off the main dining area. The setup had enough seats for 34 which was plenty of room for the party. As other reviews have mentioned, you can BYOB of wine. Corking fee is $12 and decreases by $1 with each subsequent bottle of wine. They have a decent sized wine list. I had a couple of glasses of rosé and it was really good! I don't order rosé often, but I really liked it. The staff did a good job getting food and drinks out to everyone. Water glasses were kept full and the service was really good for our large group. There's plenty of parking in front and to the side of the restaurant. The inside is a bit small, but they do have a nice large patio. They close at 10pm but they encourage patrons to take their time (the website says "stay and enjoy after the kitchen closes"). Our friend was so surprised when she walked in! We had a good time and I would definitely recommend Porta'vino for dinner or a private event.

Yelp
The food is always great at Porta vino. I live in the neighborhood and am glad to have this restaurant close by.... With that said, I was exceedingly disappointed at the hostess and how she sat people who didn't have a reservation but were clearly regular clients of the restaurant. I went in there at 7pm and by 8:30 I was still asking her when I was going to be seated even though I did have a reservation to which she said there were people waiting to be seated ahead of me. I do understand they were busy but I could also clearly see they were giving preferences to their more regular clients. It's hard for me to be more of a regular client here when when I have this experience. The girl is young and hasn't learned how to manage clients.

Yelp
Dined in on a Thursday at 7:00 pm for a party of two and was seated immediately. Charming neighbor atmosphere, fresh pasta, and it's BYOB! We ordered: Complimentary super crispy popcorn kernels - great addicting flavors, make sure your dentures are glued on tight for this! Black truffle tagliatelle - truffle smells great, pasta is cooked to perfection, but the sauce was very bland (maybe the chef forgot the salt today) Wild boar bolognese - BOMB! You can not taste much boar, the sauce is creamy goodness, and perfectly seasoned Margarita pizza - the cheese pull is never ending! Good quality ingredients, crust is light and crispy, but could use some tomato sauce

Yelp
Made reservations for 6:30pm on a Saturday, and it was super busy! They allow you to BYOB/Wine. The corkage fee is $12 for the first bottle and $11 for the second. It decreases by one dollar for additional bottles (3rd bottle $10, 4th $9, etc). For appetizers we got the Mac & cheese, balloon bread & crispy shrimp. The Mac & cheese was actually very VERY good. Tasty, cheesy & extremely hot. We really enjoyed it. The dipping oil/sauce for the balloon bread was good. The crispy shrimp had some meat/sausage & lettuce and we really enjoyed all the flavors and texture. For the main course, we had their special of black truffle pasta & the scallops. We absolutely loved the scallops. Cooked perfectly. My husband didn't particularly like the sweet squash or whatever it was with the scallops, but we still ate it all. The black truffle was yummy and the perfect portion to be honest. Any more I'd be so full. We got the brownie as dessert and really liked it with the ice cream on top! Would definitely recommend trying this spot out! Also, our waiter was super kind! He was so busy, but was attentive and got us all we needed when we asked!

Yelp
Phenomenal wine. Attentive and knowledgeable staff. Great food. No complaints whatsoever except that I wish I would have purchased that Viader. We will definitely be back soon.

Yelp
I had no idea this place existed in my neighborhood but came here one time on a whim and will def be back. You can BYOW for $12 corkage fee. The ambiance is cozy and warm and there's apparently a large outdoor area too though we sat indoors. My fiance and I shared a salad, calmari, a pasta dish (truffle tagliatte), and tiramisu for dessert. The pasta dish was def our favorite, very rich but so good. The other dishes were fine but nothing you can't get anywhere else.

Jason Z.

Yelp
Weekend dinner, first time dining here despite living very closeby. Parking is very available and they were decently busy but we were seated quickly and sat outside. The service was quite slow honestly. The food was somewhat between a casual and upscale Italian fare. We got a few apps; calamari, chicken, and Italian fries. Honestly it reminded me of fast food dressed up as more upscale food. Flavor profiles were very bland and the dish quality seemed low and the dishes were a little bit confusing. For mains, we got pasta and split a pizza. Not impressed by the Margherita pizza; crust was subpar and there was no tomato sauce. It was just cheese on bread with sliced tomatoes on top, which was not expected. The pasta actually was decent but charged pretty premium prices for what it was. Overall, it seemed like food that is dressed up but lacking finesse and quality. You're paying for quality but not quite getting it.

Yelp
Don't bother with egg plant Average food nothing to come back For I have no idea what this menu is all About ! Good luck to them they were full Not for me

Yelp
Dinner was a treat! We were headed downtown for a play & wanting something on the way. Great food, gracious servers - delightful experience. We had house red, mushroom pizza, salmon and butternut squash ravioli (seasonal). All were very good - and right size portions for the price.

Yelp
Great date night spot. We went for Valentine's Day and the menu was limited, but what we had was delicious! The bread is fantastic and needless to say we cleaned our plates. The wine selection is amazing too. We for sure will go back to see what the regular menu is like.

Yelp
Super wine pricing. Excellent pasta dishes. Fried soft shells were a seasonal special...cooked perfectly. Service is always good. So it's a solid place especially if you are into wine bargains. Space is well done looks bright and upbeat. Typical hard surface noise is just part of the full house vibe. We have and will return.

Pat V.

Yelp
Another Bill Floyd success. Food is amazing, great outdoor seating & service is great! Love the Butternut squash ravioli, the Porta Vino salad and you must have an adult milkshake for dessert!
google avatar

Michae A.

Yelp
I really wanted to like this place. The wine list is amazing! Unfortunately, the food was not the greatest. Both dishes we ordered, we wouldn't order again. We ordered the garlic plate & the veal and risotto. I will be back to try the infamous wild boar & to take advantage of their amazing wine list. Also, our waiter CT was great!

Yelp
Celebrated my husband's birthday it was our first time there and it did not disappoint. Everything was delicious and the wine selection was good and very reasonably priced. We will definitely be going back.

Yelp
Outstanding menu and food. Excellent service and fair prices. Wine is unique to the restaurant vendors and very inexpensive. Great family dining, quiet on patio. A favorite

Yelp
This place was awesome. Food and drinks were amazing. Great service. If you like Sea Bass this is the place to go. Willie the host was awesome.

Yelp
4 - Pasta, wild boar Bolognese. 3 - Pizza, II Tutto. They really load on the toppings . Get without veggies next time. 5 - Tiramisu
google avatar

Joanna J.

Yelp
Was not super crowded when I dined in. There was plenty of parking with both outdoor and indoor seating available. The wild boar bolognese did not disappoint. The meat is not gamey at all, and the pappardelle noodles... delicious. Food is decently priced, but the highlight would have to be the wine. They offer BYOB with a corkage fee that starts at $12 and decreases by a dollar for each subsequent bottle. They also have a well curated selection that is very reasonably priced with minimal markup. In fact, some bottle prices rival those you would see at the grocery/liquor store. The staff was super knowledgeable and provided excellent wine recommendations. Definitely come if you want to enjoy some quality, fair-priced wine. My only complaints would be that service was very slow when I went (but I would be willing to give it another try) and the acoustics are pretty terrible inside. It was loud and difficult to hear table conversations.

Yelp
I can't say enough good things about Porta'Vino! It's been on my list of places to try for years since it opened, but finally made it for my one year anniversary and oh boy are we glad we tried it out! Service was wonderful, atmosphere was lively and cozy for a Friday night. We shared the salmon carpaccio, a half Cesar salad, the short rib with polenta, and were treated to the milkshake with cookies for our anni. Everything was seriously so delicious. I'm going to be thinking about that carpaccio and the polenta with the (extremely tender and tasty) short rib. We can't wait to go back again and try more items on the menu. Additionally, we got the coconut cream pie to go and let me tell ya, it's bestselling for a reason. It's so obviously a homemade pie and not food service, you can taste the fresh cream and real toasted coconut flakes. We brought our own wine and paid the $12 corkage. Definitely not a cheap restaurant, but we thought that everything was very reasonably priced for the portion sizes and how lovely everything was! Highly recommended

Yelp
Classic spaghetti and meatballs, incredible warm brownie topped with ice cream, and a strong wine selection. We went on a cold evening and the staff kindly moved tables around on the patio so each guest was near the ceiling heaters.

Yelp
I've been many times & never disappointed. This time it was lacking, which was even worse since I bragged to my family about this place. Crispy shrimp delicious, Mac & cheese - dry, sea bass- dry, charged for every refill of coke. We also ordered wine. Very noisy, which I understand. I had to call for the waiter on 3 separate occasions. Bus boy was great. Coconut pie delish. Meatballs- dry. Short ribs- tender & moist.

Yelp
I really don't understand how this place has good ratings. I came here on a Sunday night and my overall experience was just awful. First of all, the restaurant is way too cramped. There is barely enough room in between tables for someone to walk through. The waiters were all running into each other and one even bumped into my uncle because it is just too cramped inside. They try to put all these tables in such a small room. The food was just awful. Nothing was good. I really question the reviews for this restaurant. Our waiter was so scatterbrained. I saw them bring out our appetizers, however they walked past us and tried to give them to the table behind me. When the table said it wasn't theirs, they walked past my table again, went into the kitchen for two mins, and came back to our table to give us the appetizers. They only checked on our table once throughout our dine in experience. After we finished our appetizers, we told them we were ready to order our entrees, they asked us to give them a minute, and 15 mins later he finally came back to our table and we had to remind them again that we were ready to order our entrees. When we were finished with our appetizers, they left the dirty plates and silverware on our table and didn't pick them up until our entrees came out. I gave this place 2 stars because inside of the restaurant was nice and there's plenty of parking available Meatballs: dry and salty Ballon bread: nothing special, thin like pita bread Wedge salad: nothing special Veal entree: it was so tough, dry, super salty Chicken pizza: small, mediocre in taste

Yelp
Food was average, especially for the price, but the wine was very good and the experience was overall really nice. We came as a party of eight on a Friday night and had no trouble getting a table outside, although it was packed inside and outside in their large restaurant. Service was great though and super friendly. We were celebrating two birthdays and they were so nice about it. Their 1L Caymus cabernet is SO good. Would highly recommend!!! For apps, we shared their infamous balloon bread, which really just tasted like a puffed up naan haha. Good though. We also got the calamari (pretty good) and the italian mac and cheese (good!!). For mains, we ordered a variety of things. My partner and I got the short rib (too salty and overcooked) and the veal and risotto (super small portion and weird flavor for the artichoke risotto that I wasn't a fan of). For dessert, we shared once of each, the cannoli, the brownie, and the coconut cream pie. And since it was two of our birthdays, they were so so nice and gave us all a round of mini adult milkshakes. So cute! The desserts were all pretty good. Solid. I think overall, the food was either not impressionable or slightly disappointing. Nothing that blew me away. The wine was fantastic, the service fantastic. And the environment was great. Overall, if you're looking for a solid dining experience, especially a place that can accommodate a large group on last minute notice, this is a good option! Gives all your basic italian food options with good wine for a fun time.

Yelp
Love love love this Italian spot. It's a great place for a date night or just an easy night out! Their pastas and pizzas are so delicious. I almost always get the lasagna because it is just to die for. Their wine prices are unbeatable and even their corking fees for BYOB are very affordable! Their wine list is extensive and has great options. It's our favorite neighborhood spot, and the staff are always so nice and helpful!

Yelp
4 stars for the wine experience: The allure of Porta'vino, and in my opinion (and the best formula for a night out) is to either purchase a whole wine bottle (pretty decent deal, they'll keep chilled on the table and top you up frequently) or byob. Buying wine to the glass has a limited selection and is relatively quite expensive. 3 stars for the food: For a place like Porta'vino, I expected to be more satisfied by their food. The food was close to being notable, but each dish had some disappointing execution errors, and overall, were more reminiscent of the quality you would expect at a sports bar than a wine bar. Menu: - Wild Boar Bolognese - flavor-wise, great, but did not come out hot as I would expect for a bolognese dish! - Calabrese Crispy Shrimp Salad - this salad was VERY LARGE and quite heavy... while the flavors were not bad, they were not impressive and the bacon or smoked pork that was thrown in felt like an after thought. - The Balloon Bread - this was definitely a fun appetizer, and the dipping oil was awesome, but it had to be eaten quickly, or else the thin bread will dry out; they also served a spicy aioli, which DID NOT go well with the bread. It was actually really disappointing because it felt again, like an after thought.

Yelp
The food was excellent and the ambience is Texas casual rustic. The service was top notch with Carlos being our waiter. He and his team provided great service to our table of 10 last night. Bill, the owner, welcomed us as we sat down and it was a pleasure of meeting him. Bill and team have a great restaurant and they have a large selection of wines or you can bring your own wine. I haven't tried the Woodlands location yet but it is on my list. Thank you Bill, Carlos and the team for our dinner experience last as we had many first timers that are eager for repeat.

Yelp
First time visit, loved the ambience, the menu and the pricing! Incredible value on their wines; not an extensive list but everything you need or want - and if the list is missing your favorite, this place is also a BYOB! Excited to return. PS, short ribs were amazing - looking forward to trying other menu items.

Yelp
I'm vegetarian and wow this place has many options! The eggplant dish is tasty and crispy on edges and served with bread. The truffle pasta is heavy but delicious with the eggplant. Both dishes can be shared! Large portions! No complementary bread here. Outdoor seating is available. They do have byob with a cork fee. I'll be back!

Yelp
BYOB establishment offering Italian eats. No hard liquor bottles or cocktail menu, strictly wine. Corkage fee is $12. I came on a Saturday night with friends for a birthday dinner and we were not impressed. It was very average and considering the pics looked amazing, we were expecting much more. Caesar salad doesn't have enough dressing, the eggplant parm had too much cheese, and my side of bread had no flavor/burnt. It wasn't horrible, just OK.

Yelp
I want to say that the food here is beyond amazing. Literally, there are no words that can truly describe how awesome the food is here. You owe it to your taste buds to drive from wherever you live just to eat here. Live too far away... No problem, make a special evening outing to come and experience the phenomenal food that the chef can create for your palate. I have to say you will not be disappointed, and your taste buds will thank you ten fold!! I had their lasagna, which is my favorite food of all. Their lasagna has to be the best I have ever had and by far my favorite. The owner suggested the coconut creme pie, and it was definitely a delectable explosion of flavors inside my mouth. I tried their Caesar salad, and how do you know a salad is good? Well, ladies and gentlemen, after the jury of my taste buds finished deliberating. The verdict was in I ate all of my salad, which is saying something because I'm not a big salad fan. This salad was phenomenal, and the dressing had an amazing flavor. The staff and chefs will not disappoint you. Not only do you owe it to yourself, you owe it to your significant other, family, friends, and even that stranger you see on the street to eat here. They will all thank you, and you will definitely be making a trip back for more. I know I definitely will have to come back!! Thank you, Bill,Larry, and Jerry, for an amazing experience!!!! Respectfully, J.Kmiec( pronounced Come-Itch)

Yelp
This place was buzzing when we walked in, and after trying some of the dishes I understand why. The appetizers are worth it. For the main dish we tried the off menu truffle pasta - 'twas fantastic. Cooked and flavored to perfection. Impressed by the speed at which our meals were delivered, without the sacrifice to quality. Looking forward to our return!
