Portillo's Homewood

This is a must have everything I come home to The Chicagoland area! I got me an Italian Beef dipped with hot peppers and raw red onions. I’ve happy! Life is good!

My husband dined in and bought me a chopped salad w/no tomatoes. The disappointment when I started mixing the salad big clumps of bacon was in it. It was so disgusting looking and smelled horrible like the bacon clumps were scraped from the bottom of a grease trap and they looked burnt. There were so many clumps throughout the salad 🤮. For anyone to make let alone serve this to anyone is disgraceful to food service workers. It was as if the person was upset they had to make it w/no tomatoes yet tomatoes were in there not a lot but they were still there. That can be a problem for someone who has food allergies and a potential law suit. When I called I was given gift cards and an apology. However, I don’t have a salad that I was looking forward to eating. I don’t want it to be a swept away problem and customers more importantly the owner should be aware of the situation. Be cautious when ordering not just check your order is correct but now open salad and mix them up before leaving 🤦🏽‍♀️

I am filing a formal complaint regarding the extremely poor customer service at the Homewood Portillo's location. This is not an isolated incident — the pattern of hostility, unprofessional behavior, and lack of urgency from staff has become the norm at this restaurant. On my most recent visit, I waited an excessive amount of time just to place an order while multiple employees and managers stood around appearing disengaged and uninterested in helping customers. The environment felt disorganized and unwelcoming. When customers are waiting and staff are simply walking around or avoiding the register, it sends a clear message that service is not a priority at this location. The manager, Briana, was particularly disappointing. Her attitude came across as rude, dismissive, and openly irritated by customers simply trying to place orders. A manager sets the tone for the entire restaurant, and the tone being set here is one of hostility and indifference. Leadership should demonstrate professionalism and accountability, not contribute to the problem. What makes this situation even more frustrating is that the experience at the Tinley Park Portillo's is completely different. That location consistently demonstrates professionalism, efficiency, and respectful customer service. The contrast between the two locations is significant and raises serious questions about the management and oversight of the Homewood restaurant. If this location continues operating with this level of disorganization and hostility toward customers, it will inevitably damage the reputation of the Portillo’s brand. I strongly urge corporate management to investigate the Homewood location, review management practices, and address the ongoing customer service failures. Customers should not feel like they are inconveniencing employees simply by trying to order food. Until the leadership and staff attitudes change, this location will continue to drive customers away.

I’ve been a loyal Portillo’s customer, but after tonight’s experience at the Homewood location, I’m seriously reconsidering ever returning. I ordered online for 8:01 PM pickup. When I arrived on time, my food wasn’t on the shelf. The employee at the pickup counter had bags piled in front of her, so after waiting 5 minutes, I politely asked if one had my name on it. She looked through them and gave me absolutely no response. Nothing. Not a yes, not a no, not even acknowledgment that I’d spoken. I could see she was overwhelmed, so I sat down to give her space. After waiting several more minutes, I asked again about my order. That’s when she finally mentioned they were out of chocolate cake. Fine, no problem. I immediately asked if there were any other cake options available. She completely ignored me and went back to bagging orders like I didn’t exist. She eventually brought my food over 20 minutes late with zero apology or explanation. When I asked about the cake situation, all she said was I needed to find a manager for a refund. The fact I have to go find manager is crazy. She made no attempt to help, no substitution offered, nothing. So now I had to stand in line behind three other customers while my hot food sat there getting colder by the minute. When I finally reached the manager and explained what happened, his response was “they’re just tired.” That’s his excuse? He then asked what I wanted him to do about it, as if this was somehow my problem to solve. I had to suggest simply substituting another cake myself just to avoid wasting even more time on a refund. He gave me a different cake, but by then my entire meal was cold. This is absolutely unacceptable. Being tired at the end of a shift doesn’t excuse ignoring customers multiple times or failing to communicate basic information. A simple “we’re out of chocolate cake, here’s another option” when I first arrived would have taken 10 seconds and prevented this entire disaster. Instead, what should have been a quick pickup turned into a 20+ minute nightmare that completely ruined my dinner. Do better, Portillo’s Homewood. This was embarrassing.

I went in to this location Sunday around 3pm, I ordered my food and waited ALMOST 30 minutes for my food. I asked the front person multiple times how long for my food, he said they were waiting on fries. He looked at my receipt and not once did he offer me my drink cups. I asked him where I can get my drink, he said to grab my cup. The cups package weren’t even opened. So I had to open it and get my cups instead of being provided a service. Afterwards, I had to ask for the 5th time for my food and thats when I was finally given my food. I seen other customers get their orders before me, I waited 28 minutes to get my order. If you’re trying to get a quick bite, DO NOT STEP I TO PORTILLOS HOMEWOOD. The guy in the front end that day needs more coahing & training on how to take care of paying customers. And the fact that while I was waiting for my food, a Portillos employee got fries before customers, before me when I asked for my food MULTIPLE TIMES. I was ignored, provided a disservice & never again will I step into this location, I will sure let all my friends and family to avoid this location

The manager and staff were very amusing and friendly. We loved our dining in experience. We all took their delicious cakes to go!

Placed a big order for the office and when I went to pick it up, it was ready by the time I arrived. 2 of the employees there were very kind and brought everything to my car all I had to do was pop the trunk for them! I am very appreciative and they get a well deserved 5 stars from me and my staff! ❤️

The food was delicious, hot, and fresh. The staff from the lady that took my order to the lady cleaning the tables were nice and friendly. The restaurant was clean and welcoming. Everything was great I will definitely go again.

Purchased my usual 2 hotdog special and tried the Italian Beef special. I was satisfied with the hotdog special and very upset with the Italian beef special. There was very little meat in my sandwich. They asked did I want the 6 inch or 10 inch. I ordered the 10 inch but received the meat of a 3 inch. I will check the sandwich before I leave the drive-thru next time. I will never return if they treat their customers this way. I am dissatisfied with my purchase

Not impressed by this location. The floors near where I waited to pick up my order were so sticky. Wait time was longer than what I would have liked. It is a pretty busy location so that can be expected. My hotdog was okay. I've had better. I did like the decor inside though. That was a nice touch. Not sure if I would visit again.

The restaurant is cold inside. The staff is slow and unfriendly. The food is mediocre. There are better hotdog and beef spots. There are better Portillo's. Skip this one.

Service was probably the worst that I've encountered in a very long time. You wait to order at the intercom/menu with no sign that you have to order with a person with an iPad. Window 1, open with a lady who doesn't say anything until you ask what's going on..no response. Pulled forward and food was just handed over. Communication is key. Also, find it weird that the label on this cake was peeled off. I didn't even eat it because it was kind of sketchy in my opinion.

Restaurant was in great shape. Clean, stocked and well taken care of facilities. The staff for the most part is very friendly and courteous. I did have an encounter with one employee that seemed irritated I was there. He was kind of rude and short, but I just kept smiling. Now I love Portillo's food so I'm usually biased. However, today I was a little underwhelmed. My Italian beef meat was really dry and just didn't have the same flavorful taste. My hotdog was constructed.sloppily but still tasted good. My onion rings were not hit by any means. Seemed like they had been sitting. I'd rather wait 2 more minutes for HOT rings instead of the warm ones I had. Still crispy and tasty. Overall my visit was a disappointment for lunch. I hope next time is better.

It's consistent everytime I go, just like any other Portillos, I'm not sure why all the negativity because for one the area needs to keep its food options or do they not remember 10 years ago when there was nothing on halsted. I digress this location is good, I never have Bad service and my order has never been wrong and I've been here more then a handful of times.

A Solid Portillo's overall, the Italian beef with spicy ghardiner was solid as usual. Maxwell Polish sausage was really good. The large onion rings was literally like 10 onion rings so I would hate to see what the small is. The person taking my order was really cold felt like, I was a bother. That said the person going table to table cleaning was really friendly. Inside was nice and clean would eat here again just pack your patience food takes some time coming out.

I used the drive thru and my wait wasn't long. I placed my order for a rodeo burger no red onions and a slice of chocolate cake and had food under 10 minutes. It was a cool experience and the burger was very tasty. A cheeseburger with plenty of bacon, bbq sauce, and 2 onion rings. The cake was delicious as well. Nice and moist mm mm mm.

The worst Portillo's cheeseburger and jumbo hotdog I ever had and I've been eating at Portillo's many locations for has to be over 20 years. Burger was cold dried out, tasted like the patty was sitting out and re-cooked all day long. I paid I believe it was a dollar extra for hot pepper peppers, which they never put on the burger or on the side. The hot dog had mustard and grease all over the wrapper and wasn't wrapped very well so when you picked it up, it all fell apart onto the table.

The food was mediocre at best. Absolutely nothing special about it, but it was edible. My daughter liked the pickle in the hot dog. We all liked the chocolate cake shake. The decor was interesting with a 60s/70s motif that continued with the music. The women's bathroom was dirty and the floor was super slippery.

I could give it 0 stars I would...I've been sitting in this line for 45 mins and currently still sitting outside in the drive thru. The customer service is nonchalant and no professional. What took the cake, is when I drove up the attendance clerk slap a post it note on my mirror and said "order when you ready." I was like ummm...okay. smh! After an hour and a half in line we received our order. The attitudes of the attendances were horrible. The order was wrong and the sausage was raw in the center, I didn't realize until I was half way done with the sandwich. I give the food a 4/10.

I know they are known for their Italian beef, but Im not a fan of wet bread. But babyyyy... it's the burgers for me! Seasoned, juicy, good quality meat and fresh ingredients... delicious!

I ordered a beef/cheddar croissant . It was dry and had absolutely no taste. I have ordered the beef cheddar croissant so many times from Portillo's and it's always been good. Very sad how the quality of Portillo's has declined since Dick sold the company.

This was my first time at Portillo's - and it was pretty good. I am removing a star because this Homewood location also was having a group event at the same time and it was loud and confusing: I walked in, and what at first had the appearance of a "taste"-station, was in fact only for a select bunch of a rowdy aged retirement-group (FAIL!). As a gourmand I also firmly believe that the taste of the hot dogs at this place, are just slightly below those of famous Nathan's out in New York. Portillo's meats taste processed. The interior of Portillo's is fun, eclectic, homey and surely is a great after-game spot. Staff was friendly. Hot dog accutrements - veggies - were very fresh and made the bite quite delicious. I will try another location in the near future - although this Homewood one, had a neat farm-like vibe! Review: 4

OMG. Your restaurant is just plain NASTY DIRTY ! The floors are just dirty ! To top it off the Bathrooms how disgusting!!!!!! Looks like no one cleans them !!!!! Hire a cleaning crew ! Then one of your servers was in the bathroom and literally DIDN'T WASH HER HANDS ! She was handling people's food !!! I will NEVER EVER COME BACK TO THIS LOCATION !!! Not VERY FRIENDLY EITHER!

They need a serious lesson on cooking grilled onions. I ordered a Maxwell polish and the onions were burned to a crisp. You don't have to cook grill onions that damn long.

I LOVE the vibe of this place!!! The bus and the cool jams...very fun! I like ALL portillos have different themes and this one definitely didn't disappoint! Stopped here on our way from Michigan to Iowa! I got my usual; beef: dipped, both peppers, and cut in half! Cheese fries, rings, and A diet coke! Dlish! Thanks, Portillos!

I ordered an onion ring at 3.99. Are they going for 1.00 a piece since i only received 4. I called to complain and they didn't get the phone. I made it home and wasn't turning around to go back. I didn't want them to tell me i ate them, when i didn't. Ridiculous

Waited in the drive thru for literally an hour and 15 minutes. The food was good though. First time trying them as I'm not even from IL. But the workers were friendly too.

1 Star - This Portillo's Destroyed My Night, My Mood, and My Faith in Humanity I don't even know how to put this into words without screaming, but I'll try: this was the most infuriating, disrespectful, soul-sucking restaurant experience I've ever had in my entire life. I walked into Portillo's expecting food. That's it. Not a miracle. Not a five-star chef experience. Just a hot meal. Instead, what I got was a 40+ minute descent into hell -- and I was THE. ONLY. CUSTOMER. How do you mess that up? HOW? What were you doing? Were you actively trying to set a world record for how little you could care about your job? Because if so -- congratulations. Mission accomplished. When the food finally crawled its way out of the kitchen like it was ashamed of itself, it was cold. COLD. As in, "you could've just handed me a fridge and I would've had a better meal." Cold fries, cold sandwich, cold soul. I waited 40 minutes for food that tasted like punishment. And just when I thought it couldn't get worse, you turned off the lights. THIRTY MINUTES BEFORE CLOSING. Not just dimmed them -- straight-up flicked them off like I was some kind of pest. Sitting there in the dark, eating your disappointment of a meal, I realized something: you people don't give a single damn about your customers. Not one. I hope someone in corporate reads this and FEELS the fury radiating off every word, because the people running this location are a disgrace. Fire every single person who was working that shift. Clean house. Burn it to the ground and rebuild it from the ashes. Because this team? They don't care. At all. They're collecting paychecks and disrespecting every single person who walks through the door. Tonight was supposed to be a quick bite. Don't order your food via , door dash, grub hub or anything of the sort because they don't read and will send you an incorrect order, they don't know how to read up there and it's pitiful ,if you can't go in don't order PLEASE,, you will be disappointed I ordered a chili dog and they sent a bowl of chili

Second time now I've paid for a bacon cheeseburger with no bacon on it. How hard is it to read and make what's ordered?

As a Chicagoan and vegan that no longer lives in Chicago whenever I come home I need my fix of vegan glizzies! Nothing beats the nostalgia taste of Chicago style hotdogs! They're great every time

Being from Ca, I was fooled by the name. Lol. I was expecting Mexican food. Very relaxed atmosphere and good music playing. I obviously had a lot of questions about food and fixings. When I approached the counter to I asked the gal if the salads were premade or. . . before I could finish she said, "We do not pre-make anything here!" That's always a good sign. I had a side salad and chicken strips. I asked for a spicy sauce for the strips and I was told the Portillo sauce is spicy. It was not. Everything was fresh and I had leftovers. My colleagues each had onion rings which looked AMAZING. They also had a spicy chicken sandwich which looked really good and a veggie dog. That was a no for me. Lol We also shared a slice of chocolate cake. The cake was a bit dry.

I have to admit I've been to the Sterling Heights location and wasn't that impressed. I just can't get down with soggy bread. So my husband wanted to grab some while traveling through Chicago and it tasted much better! Although it's extremely busy it didn't take long for me food and I tried the Chicago hotdog that was fantastic with onion rings and a peppermint shake!

on 2/22/25 i ordered food from Portillos as i have for the last 9 years or so because i really like their menu. i have always bragged to people about their beef sandwiches and other items. I only live less than 10 minutes away so its easy to order food to my senior citizens building. but on this day i ordered and paid for my food but my chicken pecan salad order was missing. I went online and explained my problem. After a few minutes they refunded the price of the salad, THEN, a few minutes later they rescinded the refund. As if to say we don't believe you!!! I have enclosed my receipt for the order, please note the pink highlights made by them prior to the delivery. every item is checked BUT the salad. I just wonder how many more times others were cheated by them similarly, maybe not by intention, but by the mistakes of their food preparers.

over ten minutes for 2 milkshakes and a fry. when i went up to the counter, they were just sitting there. at least 7 people working. not busy at all. only really came here cuz Zarlengos was closed anywyas.

Found egg shells in my chocolate cake for the second time I now don't have the desire to try again and while eating my cheeseburger out comes a very large slice of cheese wrapper yes paper I'm not a happy camper and my places are not to return

This is the worst Portillos location i have been to. They have gotten my order wrong each time i have gone there, and even gotten it wrong when they tried to correct it. They literally just throw anything in the bag. I've waited for 1.5 hours in the drive through. I used to love Portillos food but this place is a nightmare and triggers my inner Karen. Plus it's way overpriced and the quality has gone down hill.

I ordered online as I usually do and as usual my order is missing something! The only reason I decided to order again was because I received a $25.00 gift card. Surprisingly, the ribs were fatty today and not tasty. Rib dinner came without the fries, bread and the wrong dressing!! Totally disappointed!!!

It was our first time at Portillos and we had the Italian beef. The beef itself was good but I expected it to come with onions or something else by default. The buns were ok but tasted better when dripped in gravy, which we asked for a side of. Sorta expected the whole sandwich to be gravy dipped. It was drier than I expected. It was ok for a chain restaurant. I really liked the chocolate cake shake.

I've been to this location a few times previously and it has definitely been going down each time. I waited 30 minutes then said something and they took my receipt and got the order. I wanted to keep my receipt and the young girl said no and I said I need to check the order. Well I didn't have my fries and she said she couldn't confirm. Let's just say this location is the worst and I'd much rather go to Buona Beef where the customer service is much better and they do a great job with everything including being allergy friendly. This was my last chance at this Homewood Portillo's location.

I ordered an Italian beef sammich. Hardly any meat. Tiny. My large fries was not filled all the way up. I was duped.

This is the worst experience I have ever had at ANY Portillo's!!! I cannot understand why there were 8 visible employees standing around and the drive thru line was out of the parking lot moving at a craw! I cannot believe there was management on the premises as slow as these employees were moving. To add insult to injury why after waiting ALL that time the burger I ordered was cold as ICE! I have never seen a burger with a slice of cheese this stiff! COLD COLD COLD This burger was dry as flour. It could choke a horse! If other locations operated even half as bad as this one did Portillo's would NOT be around long! I have never! From my experience tonight it will be a looooonnnnggggg time before I do again!

Food is cold, not well prepared and service is slow. I ordered a cheddar croissant beef, almost zero cheese, it wasn't even melted and sandwich was cold. The place was empty and it still took 15 minutes to construct a simple sandwich.

Same ole terrible service and stale card-board like fries. When this location first opened it was great after they sold service and food quality went to SH!T.

The hotdog was good just prices too high for a hotdog in Chicago hotdogs are 5.99 or 6 dollars with everything on it I went there after going to this restaurant staff friendly nice orders are slow and they forgot my shake had to remind them but they are very busy even at night time I would go there if they gave senior discount or buy 1 get 1

I ordered a whole chocolate cake from here, which was great. But in addition to that, I ordered a single strawberry shortcake on the app. When I arrived, I parked in the curbside pickup spot and after a bit, a girl came out, put the chocolate cake in the backseat, said we are out of shortcake, they should refund it your account and walked away before I could say anything. She was rude. Not only that, but they didn't refund me. I waited a month before I called them, and finally was able to get someone on the phone who went through the order list and processed the refund. That's just ridiculous. If something is not available, it shouldn't let you order it on the app, but having a person purchase it and then having to call you to refund it, is absurd.

Kind of a staple from my childhood and i try to stop anytime I go through the suburbs. I love their cheese fries but driving this time and eating I opted for just regular fries. They're crinkly and crispy and delicious! The hot dogs are crisp to the bite served with as much Chicago fixings as you'd like. My children opted for pickles only, served on sesame seed buns. The 1/3 lb cheeseburger i had was juicy and served with mayo, last up, lettuce, tomato, and red onion. I ate every last drop!

We stopped by the Homewood Portillo's when we were recently back at home for the holidays. I'm surprised at all of the negative reviews because we had a great experience. The service at the counter was friendly; we came mid afternoon and dined inside so it wasn't very crowded. We did end up waiting a little bit for our order, however we were given a free piece of the famous chocolate cake for waiting. The food was hot and delicious. There isn't a Portillo's by where we live in California, so it's always a craving when we are back.

Portillo's system for serving their drive thru customers is as follows: Prep half the order Place on shelf for twenty minutes to get cold Give customer half their food order, stone cold Give them the wrong order if they complain half their food is missing Every time

Being the fist homewood customer when it first opened was great, I have noticed though that since the pandemic that the service has gone way down hill. I usually don't mind waiting a reasonable amount of time when they are really busy but lately once I have placed my order I'm having to usually wait a half hour or longer for food that shouldn't take more then 15 minutes to get ready, I have sort of solved this by ordering on the app and just picking it up but sometimes that isn't right, Portillo's you need to do better! I don't know if you need better managers but when your works don't seem to care anymore there is a problem.

Drive thru is horrible. Love their garden dog but it took me 30 minutes to get it. Wasted time and gas. If you are in a hurry don't sop here. I ordered 1 garden dog not a seven course meal.

Slowest drive-through out of any Portillo's I've ever been to. Over 20 minutes to get a beef sandwich and a fry. When I finally did get my order, the food was lukewarm. The bread was completely soggy even though I did not ask for a dip. Fries were not crisp at all. $13 for what?

This Portillo's has prime location as its right of the expressway. Great if you're looking to grab a bite on the way home or on the way to work. Sometimes the live can be long during rush hour peek times. However the line typically moves fairly quickly. 10-20 minute wait. Parking is decent pre/post Covid. Menu has a variety. I usually get the jumbo hotdog but today I felt like switching it up. Love the chicken sandwich! Pro-tip: add some Louisiana hot sauce!!!

I agree with the vast majority of the reviews for this (Homewood) Portillo's, to the effect that the issues are not with the food but the service, particularly the quality control. The food is good, but takes WAY too long to get even a simple order. The biggest issue is with the drive thru, and the consistent mistakes being made to orders. I cannot say that they have ever gotten my order correct when going through the drive thrill in a couple of years. ALWAYS double check your order before leaving. Today, I ordered food for five people, which consisted of a burger, beef sandwich, some hot dogs, a chopped salad and fries. They came out with the burger, fries and sandwich. No hot dogs or salad were in the bag. So half the order was missing. Shocker. By all means I will say Portillos is worth it, just make sure you check your order.

Service is poor they are never friendly at the counter where you pick up your food. I suggest the manager be present to see how they operate.
