The Best Coffee Shops in Portland

"Cà phê is the word for coffee in Vietnam, whose traditionally dark robusta-bean roasts, paired with sugar, often get overlooked by coffee connoisseurs — at least until Portland Cà Phê began opening local sippers’ eyes in 2021. Owner Kim Dam started roasting beans from Vietnam for her family’s restaurant House of Banh Mi before supplying other Vietnamese businesses in Portland. There’s a wide menu of banh mi and Vietnamese coffee, served in classic espresso-drip options, traditional Vietnamese iced coffee made with a phin (traditional Vietnamese coffee filter), and lattes with flavor additions like ginger syrup and house ube puree. Dam recently teamed up with Chef Richard Le (Matta) and pastry chef Lisa Nguyen (Heyday) to open Vietnamese American cafe, Mémoire Cà Phê." - Paolo Bicchieri

Great vibes and natural lighting alongside very smooth authentic Vietnamese coffee roasted in house. So refreshing and delicious with a variety of iced and hot coffees. I ordered a coconut oat milk coffee latte Highly recommend their coffee drinks. We ordered their bahn mi and the meat was slightly over salted. I went to the original location two years ago and loved visiting this second cafe location! Service was neutral as the barista was not as welcoming as we got our orders taken.

If you’re looking for a vibrant spot to enjoy your coffee, look no further than Portland Cà Phê! This charming cafe has quickly become a local favorite, and it’s easy to see why. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, with cozy seating and a stylish decor that makes it perfect for both work and relaxation. The menu is a delightful mix of classic and innovative drinks, featuring expertly brewed coffees, artisanal teas, and delicious pastries that are baked fresh daily. The baristas are not only skilled but also incredibly friendly, creating a welcoming environment that makes you feel right at home. For context my group of 7 came in at 9:30am, and we street parked. Upon entering you were greeted with this lovely hand painted mural that is really breathtaking. There were enough two seaters throughout the place, and the overall atmosphere was really inviting. There was only one person working up front, but they were super friendly, and answered all my questions about the drink selection. Since my group ordered drinks and bánh mì it took some time for all of it to be prepared. However, there was not too long of a wait time at all. On top of that the drinks were really yummy. The only thing I would say is that their bánh mì needed to have more meat filling. While the vegetables were vibrant in color and a textural dream, there was just not enough meat for each bite. Other than that the place was beautiful, drinks were great, but specialty house bánh mì needed more meat.

Google
Great place for Vietnamese coffee variations plus unique mochi donuts. While I can’t tell you the difference between most coffee drinks, I do know I like the contrast between the bitterness of the Vietnamese coffee and the sweetness of condensed milk. Anything that is similar to this might be in my wheelhouse. We didn’t have a chance to try their banh mi this time. We were able to try their mochi donuts which we heard are made locally. I would describe them as having the consistency of butter mochi but the taste of whatever flavor they’re advertised.

Google
This is my favorite bahn mi shop - it's something i crave all the time. Even though we live over 30 minutes away, we just keep coming back! Super duper consistent quality. Bread is crispy crumbly on the outside and soft on the inside, all the veggies are fresh, and the protein choices are soooo well seasoned. Just perfect, perfect, perfect for a normal price ($10 for the tofu onion, which is pictured :) ) We've also had their donuts and lattes which are all delicious, and not too sweet! Highly recommend!

Google
I am a frequent Ca Phe customer! Although it is near my work, I would go across the river for this daily if I had to. The most humble and hospitable staff truly elevate the experience. The Earl Grey Matcha with OatMilk was my favorite seasonal drink by far. I cannot wait to see what they incorporate during their summer season! The Mochi Donuts are supplied from a local bakery, and I take one each chance I can get. But get there early, because by 11, they are sold out!!

Google
Outstanding service and hard-working staff! I was at this location with my husband, our friend, and our baby when this review was supposedly written and let me be clear: Rheye T is absolutely not telling the truth. There were only two employees working, and they were non-stop hustling the entire time. No breaks, no distractions, no one playing with any children. The “loud child” they’re referring to was our baby, who isn’t even talking yet and was quietly being held by her dad, myself, or toddling in the corner. The staff remained professional and focused throughout our visit, and the service was excellent. If there was a wait time, it was because the place was packed! Please don’t let false reviews steer you away. This place is fantastic, and the workers deserve praise, not lies.

Google
Serious good stuff coming out of this small coffee roaster/shop. Great coffee and espresso as well as delicious viet-inspired coffee drinks (like black sesame chai). The banh mi is also solid!

Yelp
Drinks - 5/5 Service 1/5 Whats up with the workers here? Their attitude is trash. They were rude to me and my partner and it was so unnecessary. If you don't wanna work there then don't. Don't bring that to people who are paying.
google avatar

Ben C.

Yelp
Unexplainable appalling service by lone male staff. Quiet inside, only one person sitting inside with a laptop, there was no rush line or phone ringing. So why the impatient frowning? Ordered an Ube and Americano. Drinks almost slid at us with attitude. No gratitude attitude. The guy's heated mannerisms were displaying nothing professional. We were stunned and upset from the counter experience which made the drinks unenjoyable. Thumbs down.
google avatar

Smaly K.

Yelp
I don't drink coffee, so I just got a Pandan Waffle. It was good, and I liked the texture. My cousin did get some kind of coffee drink, and she liked it, and it was a very cute drink. Staff was very friendly.

Yelp
Great place, came during a roadtrip during thanksgiving up from san francisco and it was a pleasant spot. It was also the only place open on thanksgiving which was kinda great. #goasianrestaurants for being open on major federal holidays in the us. I got the ube latte which was amazing and the interior was really really cute. Definitely stop by if you're in the area
google avatar

Milo T.

Yelp
Stopped by to grab different style of coffee. Menu had selections that were interesting but be sure to look at the walls to see if there are other beverages or foods that are seaonable as I didn't see that until after I ordered. There were plenty of seats available and parking behind the building. Drinks were delivered pretty quick.
google avatar

Lisa N.

Yelp
It's ok. To be fair I'm not an avid coffee drinker. I actually ordered the black sesame chai latte instead. Kinda underwhelming. Interior is cute but very limited seats. There were only 2 staff and both looked nice. I wished my drink was sweeter. It was just alright. I thought I'd like it because it had black sesame however, I'm really not a chai person.. I added more sugar to sweeten it up a bit. I like how they sell Vietnamese food here, such as banh mi and pandan waffles. Hope they can offer a pandan latte next time!!!
google avatar

Marie R.

Yelp
I've been waiting to check out this spot since I love Vietnamese food and coffee. But I was disappointed yes by the weak coffee and the mediocre sandwich. It doesn't help that the staff just seemed like they didn't wanna be there. That's it! Just super disappointing!
google avatar

Linda L.

Yelp
The coconut cream latte was absolutely divine. I normally don't drink coffee but this seemed like it would be good, and I'm so glad I did bc now, I want more of it! This cafe was bright and cozy, with a good amount of seating. I definitely want to come back and try more drinks.

Yelp
I stopped by Portland Ca Phe when I was running some errands in this area and craving coffee. I actually didn't realize this location was here, I mostly knew of their first location over in SE! Free street parking down Russell St made it easy to stop in. I got just a small ube latte, but several other things on their menu caught my eye for next time (like ca phe sua, pandan waffles, black sesame chai, tofu banh mi, and their seasonal drink specials). It's $5 for a small which isn't cheap so for me this is a specialty treat rather than a daily source of caffeine. I took it to-go but there were folks hanging out and chatting. Service was quick and kind. It's a nice environment - some bench and chair seating, hanging plants, a great mural on the wall.
google avatar

Nicholas W.

Yelp
Loved the ice coffee and the environment, and the Banh Mi had a lot of flavor. Nice and welcoming little shop where you could probably get work done. Only critique was the baristas weren't super friendly.
google avatar

Jonathan Y.

Yelp
Tried this place for the first time after having it on my list, we got the Ube latte and the pumpkin cold brew. Overall was a bit letdown to be honest the Ube didn't have a strong Ube flavor, and both of them tasted pretty much just watered down. We tried to add a bit of cream, but still it wasn't quite that enjoyable. The other pumpkin drinks did seem kind of interesting. Some will likely go back to try that maybe. The mochi donuts weren't bad though. There is a six donut limit per person or something like that.

Yelp
I've been to their original location located on Holgate and LOVED their Vietnamese coffee. I had their ube latte but this time, I knew I gotta get their Ca Phe Sua. This location is located next to the Merkato Ethiopian Food Store on the corner of Martin Luther King Jr Blvd and NE Russell St with a tiny entrance that could easily be missed. There's only street parking around the area which could be very difficult to find. As mentioned, I got their Ca Phe Sua with half sweetness, and I was in love with it! The amount of sweetness and bitterness was just right for me. I LOVE my coffee with a strong, bitter flavor rather than a sweet creamy. Like many other coffees that specialize in Vietnamese coffee, the price was a bit on the pricier side. My friends got their Ube Latte and all enjoyed it! When I first had that, I didn't really care for it but after trying theirs again, I definitely enjoyed it this time around. Definitely a great place to check out especially since they have seats to study and food to buy. I would love to try their banh mi the next time!
google avatar

Kristine O.

Yelp
I wish I had more time to try more of their menu!! But the ca phe sua definitely hit and helped fuel my road trip. And I thought the matcha donut was good! It's more sticky and dense compared to regular donuts for those who aren't aware of Asian desserts, so it might not be everyone's cup of tea. I loved their map of Vietnam on the wall, and I found the cafe to be very clean and cutely decorated. Would recommend!

Yelp
I have been wanting to go to this location since Dec 1, when I saw their Instagram post about pandan waffles. I was out of the country for a while and then the holidays... finally I had a chance to go today. But, alas, no pandan waffles. They were out or something. That was literally the only reason why we drove all the way out there. And the hours are wrong on Yelp. So we arrived a half hour before they opened. Service wasn't friendly, by any means, but I guess I wouldn't consider it rude. No friendly hello when we walked in, just a "do you know what you want?" They had mochi donuts, so I got a pandan one and my husband had an ube one. They were really good. We also ordered a grilled pork bahn mi to split. We didn't mention we were splitting, but he cut it in half for us anyway because he figured we might be splitting. That was above and beyond we thought and what made me go from a 3- to a 4-star review. My caphe sua da was just okay. It tasted different than I've had before in both Vietnam and stateside, but I'm not entirely sure why. My husband got the tiramisu latte and liked it. I'll go back just for a pandan waffle if they get them back.
google avatar

Heather R.

Yelp
Portland Cà Phê was a good cafe but not a great cafe in my opinion. The parking in the area was okay. Both employees working the day that I visited weren't friendly and acted like I was crazy when I asked for a fork for my pandan waffle. It didn't seem like it was one that you picked up and ate. The matcha latte was okay. The waffle itself was good but I've had better pandan waffles. I'm not sure if I would come back here.
google avatar

Missy S.

Yelp
Went here today on the recommendation of a former student, and it was fantastic. I also want to comment on how welcoming and helpful the staff was! The iced black sesame chai was really good, and the Matcha, which we don't normally like, was really flavorful. And that Ube doughnut? Perfection.
google avatar

Heather R.

Yelp
Super cute little spot for banh mi and coffee drinks. Food menu is a bit limited but the prices are really good: we got roasted pork, teriyaki chicken and teriyaki tofu banh mi and some drinks. The black sesame chai latte was phenomenal and the banh mi were so good. Really wanted a little more spice on the banh mi but still great, fresh flavors. Great service too.

Paulexi L.

Yelp
Came here for lunch on a random Wed - easy parking (lot behind the building), no line, and plenty of seats inside. Felt airy and clean inside, and didn't have an overwhelming coffee shop smell (which I just wasn't in the mood for at 1pm). Staff was super friendly and patient while I tried to figure out what to order, and service was pretty quick. I got the banh mi (the one with pate) and the Ube latte steamer with almond milk (I already had coffee in the morning but couldn't resist trying the ube!). The bread on the banh mi was perfectly crisp on the outside and soft inside, with just enough meat and veggies and great flavor. Could have used a bit more mayo cause it was a little on the dry side, but I might be used to having it slathered on, I dunno. The ube steamer was yum and I'm sure would have tasted even better with a shot of espresso in it. I was visibly jealous of the person who ordered a strawberry matcha after me cause it looked yummy. Will definitely be back to try more.

Yelp
Summer goal- hit up as many coffee shops I can in PDX to find my perfect iced coffee concoction. Ca Phe has been on my list for awhile, but I found the drive down to the SE to be cumbersome. Thankfully they've opened up in my neighborhood. They carry banh mi sandwiches ($9), traditional espresso drinks, many Vietnamese drinks that I'm not super familiar with, bagged coffee beans, Topo Chico and La Croix (serious bonus). There's some indoor seating and the cafe was pretty quiet. The 20 yo version of myself would love all of the delicious sounding coffee drinks with condensed milk, but the older version of myself stuck to an iced espresso with a splash of oat milk. I liked the coffee, but prefer a richer espresso. Also picked up a banh mi. I absolutely love banh mi sandwiches and thought their version was good, but on the drier side. Will keep that in mind next time. Anyways I'm thrilled to see them close by and will certainly stop by again.

Yelp
Service is horrible. Stank attitude from worker. I'm in here right now and see him roll eyes at customers. Don't support rude small businesses.
google avatar

Jason T.

Yelp
This was the first coffee stop for my Portland trip. I got the Ca phe Sua and the wife got the coconut cream latte. We paired it with the pork and house special banh mi to get the day started. Bread was crispy and the filling was just right. The Coconut cream latte tasted like a somoa. The Ca Phe Sua was perfect to me as it was not too sweet. This place was easy to find as we were walking but could be easily missed if you are driving!

Michelle M.

Yelp
The coffee is good, but the staff were so rude it made me feel like I had to apologize for being there lol. Seating and outlets are limited. Parking also limited.
google avatar

Haeun J.

Yelp
Located in a quiet corner in SE Portland, Ca Phe does not disappoint when it comes to banh mi and specialty Vietnamese coffees. They also carry HeyDay Doughnuts, which if you're a local, you know they are amazing. I always get the house special banh mi, which always hits the spot (the bread to filling ratio is perfect). The ube latte is great as well -- ube latte tastes pretty watery at other places, but whatever they use is properly concentrated and you get a nice OOMPH of ube with every sip. They offer different flavors that you can choose to add in, like cardamom, lavender, rose, and ginger. So if that floats your boat, you should definitely check them out.

R Gin S.

Yelp
The service is good and I really like the atmosphere of the place. The drinks are really creative and tasty but it would be nice for decaffeinated coffee options. I find myself really enjoying studying here. One thing that would make it bit better is that the chairs NEED padding
google avatar

Yeon C.

Yelp
Loved my coconut cream latte and the house special Bahn Mi sandwich! The coffee was so flavorful and perfectly balanced! The baguette was so crispy warm with fresh pickled carrots and daikon, cilantro added with meat, totally yum!! Loved the occasional accents of jalapeños!!! Definitely a spot worth swinging by when in the nearby area!!!

Kiki S.

Yelp
Delicious bahn mi with great bread. Friendly service. Will definitely return next time I'm in town
google avatar

Jan Michael F.

Yelp
The Bahn Mi and Ube Latte I got from here tasted so delicious! I had the spicy beef and it was the best. Parking was easy, the staff were friendly, the place was cute and there were outlets and plants all over! Good place to do some work.
google avatar

Kyle W.

Yelp
One of my Vietnamese friends wants to try this place out as we heard good things about this place, but we were unfortunately a bit disappointed by the drinks. I've personally had a fair share of Vietnamese coffee in Seattle and OC, both of which have a very competitive Vietnamese coffee scene, which may be partly why this place was underwhelming. I tried the ube latte, black sesame chai, and ca phe sua (iced coffee with condensed milk). The ube latte had a very subtle ube flavor, the black sesame chai was decent with an apparent black sesame flavor, but the ca phe sua did not taste like Vietnamese coffee at all. It tasted somewhat like regular coffee with not really any creamy / milky flavor for the condensed milk, but it was still quite sweet. I am not too sure if they intend to make ca phe sua from regular coffee + condensed milk, but it just did not taste like actual Vietnamese coffee.
google avatar

Lisa D.

Yelp
The first time we kind of accidentally stumbled upon this spot and had the Vietnamese iced coffee and an iced chai latte and it was delicious! We kept raving about coming back and this is the spot. Second time we went to the one in Holgate and it was not good... both drinks were bland like they were watered down. The Vietnamese coffee and chai latte was a big let down. So the third time we went back to this one at MLK and got a Vietnamese iced coffee and 2 iced chais. Both seemed watered down too and disappointing... not sure if I would even try to come back... hopefully I can find a spot that is consistent with their products.
google avatar

Judy D.

Yelp
Warm, cozy, and welcoming! The banh mis are very tasty, as well as the black sesame chai. Very sweet service, as well! Highly recommend.
google avatar

Celine C.

Yelp
Love this new location! Coffee and banh mis are next level as always! Also a great place to work since they have wifi and a great vibe inside! I've already been here twice in the past week! I recommend the fried onion tofu banh mi!
google avatar

Spicy P.

Yelp
Service was meh - which is always a big turn off for me. The guy at the counter was pretty disinterested and that led to an unexciting experience with mediocre sandwiches and coffee. So many options for better banh mi and Vietnamese iced coffees elsewhere.
google avatar

Susan K.

Yelp
The coffee is amazing! I love their cafe sua da. It's not too sweet and not too strong (it's still quite strong but not heart attack strong). The banh mi sandwiches are also amazing! My fave so far is either the chicken or the spicy tofu. My only complaint is that the staff isn't very friendly. There are a couple of workers that are nice but the others that I've seen are not as friendly. Otherwise everything is great and it's within walking distance from my work!
google avatar

Sandra L.

Yelp
Every drink on the menu here is magical. The Ube latte and black sesame chair are so rich and unique, and the waffles are always made fresh, warm with perfect consistency. The vibe instantly puts me in a good mood, cute spot to do work or catch up with pals.

Mila C.

Yelp
Extremely delicious and very strong drinks! Cute little cafe with great options. Would definitely go back and recommend to anyone

Jenny T.

Yelp
Was excited to try Ca phe sua( Vietnamese coffee) but was very disappointed. The coffee tasted acidic and in a way watered down. It tasted like a incorrectly brewed cold brew with lots of splenda.

James H.

Yelp
Great food and coffee in a chilled out industrial environment. Fast wifi for work. Highly recommend.
google avatar

Kirsten W.

Yelp
Great addition to the neighborhood! Friendly customer service, delicious chai and a phenomenal banh mi. The bread is great! Love what they did with the space too. I used to frequent Goldrush back in the day and Ca Phe has done a good job updating the building while still maintaining that old Portland charm. I will be back for sure.
google avatar

Vanesa A.

Yelp
The food is good, but their attitude is the worst. I have been there a few times, and they are super rude. I once went earlier in the morning with two friends, and we ordered bánn mìs. The person working there told us in a very rude way that we would have to wait around ten minutes, which is fine. I assumed that they weren't expecting to make bánn mìs that early in the morning. However, I was there today at around 9:00AM. My friend and I ordered lattes, and we were talked to with an attitude. I just feel like I am inconveniencing them every time I go there.
google avatar

GAry S.

Yelp
Good coffee, great snacks!!! Fun location..
google avatar

Ted P.

Yelp
This review is on the coffee beans only. I purchased a bag of Good Morning Portland coffee beans for $18. I had to change my grinder settings to a much finer grind and less overall ground mass (~14 g) in order to get a great espresso out of them. I would purchase them again. The reason for the 4 instead of 5 stars is they do not give you a complimentary cup of small drip with your beans. I can get equivalent quality beans for $14-16 at the grocery store. The drip coffee is what brings me in and makes it worthwhile. What's the cost to the restaurant. $0.50? I'll be back to try the food, but not sure how often to buy beans. If you change your policy on providing drip, I'll change my review to 5 stars and come back more often for beans!

Natalie B.

Yelp
Best bánh mì we've had in Portland BY FAR! My partner took a bite of their House Special and had to close his eyes it was so damn good. We were lucky enough to stumble upon this place today and I'm so grateful we did. Great service, cute space, AMAZING FOOD! We took an order to go so we can have more for dinner.
google avatar

Rich F.

Yelp
Nice space, tasty Bahn Mi options, friendly folks! Walkable from our place so we'll probably be regulars!
google avatar

Deep D.

Yelp
Bitterly disappointed. Cà phê sữa is my favorite way to enjoy coffee. And I was doubly excited to have a cup with single origin Vietnamese coffee. But, sadly, after coming here several times, it's just another PDX disappointment. The coffee is inconsistent, often watery. They only serve their house blend, though they do have several intriguing roasts for sale as whole beans. The food is OK. If you want a good banh mi, come here, but you could go most anywhere else in PDX and get the same quality. That is, if they're not out of stock. Each time I've come here several menu items are unavailable (which you may not find out until after paying and sitting down).

Aria L.

Yelp
New to Portland and have been trying all the hype places! There's parking in the back of the building which is amazing! My first time ever trying robusta beans and it sure gives you a caffeine rush! My partner and I got the classic Vietnamese coffee with condensed milk, although not as sweet as other places it had a great balance, next time I would ask for more sweetness. We enjoyed our banh mi as well! We got the fried onion and was impressed on how the top of our mouths were not all cut up from the bread.
