On the Grid : Portland Nursery

"This is plant heaven. You can spend hours roaming the well-organized greenhouses mulling over what tropical houseplants and cacti treasures to bring home. The staff is extremely helpful to lead you to the right choices or help you problem-solve with your existing plants. You can even have them pot your new ones, so you don't even have to do any work if you don't want to!" - Factory North

13 Hidden Spots to Eat and Drink in Portland

"Given the sprawling layout of Portland Nursery, you might miss the coffee cart if you don’t explore every last nook and cranny. Tucked into the back corner of the large greenhouse left of the nursery entrance surrounded by tropical plants, The Bean Sprout serves Jasmine Pearl Teas and coffee from Oblique Coffee Roasters, a family-run roaster down the street, along with Tuscan Bakery baked goods and Ruby Jewel ice cream sandwiches. The cart is open daily until 3 p.m., hours that will extend to 5 p.m. for the nursery’s popular apple festival this October." - Kara Stokes

It's always refreshing to go to my happy place! Staff is incredibly knowledgeable on anything you might need for gardening, flowers, and more. They had an amazing seed selection. It's still in winter mode but still has a huge selection of berries, Winter starts, and they had onion plants and horseradish. The potato seedlings were worse for wear, and I'll wait for the next shipment. The parking lot was clean and found a spot close to the entrance. I used the restroom, and it was clean and usable.

Google
An enjoyable place to browse a wide variety of plants and shrubs. We've gotten succulents, a rose bush, lavender and some other plants here and we've had great success with all of them. Helpful and friendly staff.

Oren Tanay

Google
What an amazing nursery. The staff are very knowledgeable and helpful. That know their products and are eager to help. I went there looking for the ever elusive vermiculite in large quantity, and sure enough, they had it in 3 cu ft bags, which is rare to say the least. Their plant selection is one of the best in Portland, and you'll find almost every gardening gadget you will ever need.

Kathleen Gadeholt

Google
They have a beautiful and broad selection of plants, clearly broken down into sections. They have so many fun gifts, pots, and garden additions. You could easily spend hours here. Their return policy is shockingly generous. The staff is so so friendly and sweet, too. 11/10.

Shogun's Gallery

Google
Probably the best stocked urban nursery around. There’s always so much to inspire for the next gardening project. I’ll be going back to get a Hinoki tree to add to my landscape.

David Tweedie

Google
Most excellent! Extensive quality stock at reasonable prices tended by experienced staff. Head straight to the outside info kiosk for directions to locate the plant(s) of your choice.

Viridian Landscaping

Google
Our go to spot for unique and hard to find plants. It is always orderly and clean. The staff is always friendly and very knowledgeable. We picked up a climbing Rose today and had to resist buying more plants. Truly a plant lover's oasis.

Google
Disappointed but not surprised at feeling very unwelcome. Signed up for a houseplants class and couldn't find it, walked up to cashier and saw that abrupt change in demeanor, body language, and tone of voice that we people of color often get. Felt frazzled, went to class, experienced same change in demeanor from instructor. Tried to shrug it off as you just get used to doing from being someone who looks and speaks differently. Writing a review like this helps; won't go back.

Yelp
Stunning nursery with sprawling grounds and selection. Always great service here by knowledgeable gardeners. I come here for hard to find plants, and they always come through. The plants are healthy and do well once home, so there's great value in that.

Yelp
A really great gardening store, beautiful plants and helpful staff too Many vegetables to choose from

Yelp
This place is fantastic for quality and variety but I had to leave empty handed because I couldn't find anything I could afford. Prices seemed high.

Yelp
Fantastic selection. Huge selection of lilacs. Service was okay. It would have been nice if someone helped me with the plant. It was very heavy and hard for me to lift.

Yelp
Big fan of Portland Nursery. They have two locations (this one and one off of Division) but I come here the most as it is closer to me. The property really expands back quite a ways beyond the front building/parking lot, so the nursery is larger than it may appear from the street. What I like about PN is that they run a tight ship, have great variety, and have super helpful staff. Due to the size of the nursery, it can be a little overwhelming to figure out where everything is but once you get the hang of it you'll appreciate how everything is clearly labeled and spaced out. And if you are ever in doubt, find anyone with a blue shirt (staff) and they will be more than happy to help you out. On that note, the info booth is also great; they are there to not only answer your questions about the nursery but also to do the research on that one plant you're trying to find/figure out the name of. I also really appreciate how they use the entrance as a display area based on the seasons; in any given season, the plants I admire on my neighborhood walks (spring/summer flowers, fall leaves, winter interest) will be beautifully arranged right in the front as I walk in. On more than a few occasions I've come in looking for a plant I don't know the name of yet, only to see it right in front! Everything there is available for purchase, which is handy. Another cool thing about PN is that they have a money-back guarantee -- if their plants die on you, you can get a refund! I honestly could not believe my ears when I heard that I could get a credit back on the new red twig dogwood that didn't make it through our scorching summer. You best believe on my next visit that poor shriveled husk of a bush was in my tow. I only hope they gave it a proper burial :P PN seriously has everything you need: annuals, perennials, vegetables, shrubs, groundcover, trees, houseplants, seeds, fertilizer, mulch, soil, tools and equipment of all kinds. I could go on! Yes, it is a little pricier than the big box stores but it's worth it to support local.

Yelp
I feel embarrassed to even rate this place. Every time I get out of my car to tackle the seemingly endless rows of gorgeous plants...I am almost paralyzed by so many choices. And on top of that, the staff are helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. We keep coming back for the flora.. Thank you for your amazing selections. We'll be back ... for more!

Yelp
My favorite nursery in the city! Filled with every type of amazing plant you can think of. I was able to snag some Armenian cucumbers for the garden this year, what a great find! Staff is incredibly knowledgeable and very helpful. It's always a joy coming here. Pro Tip: sign up for their newsletter and get access to discounts.

Yelp
We went to Portland Nursery yesterday and it was a really frustrating experience as compared to previous years. Apparently, one is now required to be a botanist to visit the nursery and know which plants attract bees, butterflies, or hummingbirds. Prior as in over the past 6 to 7 years the nursery had clearly defined tags that made the experience about shopping and exploring versus studying and pulling your hair out. And the staff was definitely not tenured as they used to be either. Not a great experience. Very sad....this used to be one of my favorite outings in the spring and early summer.
google avatar

Whitney P.

Yelp
In the spring and summer, this is my go-to nursery for flowers and vegetable plant starts. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly and they have good sales. In the fall and winter, I enjoy taking their workshops and classes. I recommend subscribing to their newsletter to be in-the-know.

Yelp
I love Portland Nursery , my location is on East Burnside. They have what I'm looking for when I'm looking for it. If it's in stock, it time to plant it, no guessing. This year (2023), I bought my Fall garden veggies and perennials that will attract pollinators. Plants are healthy and most are reasonably priced. The help is excellent. I can recommend.

Martha F.

Yelp
Best retail nursery in Oregon. They have a huge selection, hand curated by their buyers. This is truly the store for PLANT PEOPLE.
google avatar

Shannon H.

Yelp
Oh my gosh, this is one of my favorite places in the whole world to shop for flowers. You know you're getting great service. You know you're getting great local wildlife supporting flowers that are native pollinators. Good diversity of color seasonally and it's not the most unique offerings there's certainly other nurseries that do that, but for all of the staples and some wonder, you can enjoy this as one of your go to places for gardening

Yelp
Just returned from a trip to Portland Nursery with everything I wanted and a "few" impulse buys. For years I have ordered my vegetable garden stuff from territorial seed but their shipping charges are now at a level that is too high for me. Portland Nursery has a impressive range of territorial seeds so why pay for shipping. I wanted potato starts- checked territorial and they were sold out- Portland Nursery, on the other hand, has a huge stock, lots of varieties and you can bag up exactly how many you want- perfect for small gardens. Plus a great selection of all the other garden vegetables. And on a early Sunday morning the place was not crowded- so now is the time to shop- couple of weeks from now you will be waiting for a parking spot. Good people, fair prices for variety and excellent quality.

Yelp
Super cute local nursery with lots of sizes and price variations. Great for any budget
google avatar

Pat C.

Yelp
Great nursery, but a bit pricey compared to couple other ones I like. They DO have some unique things though. They have a decent selection of bonsai, which I rarely see in other nurseries. They also have real wine barrel planters, which saves me a trip 30 - 60 mins out of town where they normally are. My biggest gripe is the layout. For some reason, I find it a bit hard to find where everything is. Maybe more signs and maps around the grounds? It's big enough to need a bit more customer experience tweaks to signage, etc.
google avatar

Olivia C.

Yelp
I wasn't a plant person until the pandemic and my friends who taught me about how to take care of plants. Since then, I bought my first pandemic plant which was a Swiss cheese plant from the Portland nursery. These plants are finicky and pricey so this was a leap for me. I can proudly say my Swiss cheese plant is thriving and I know it's because of how Portland Nursery grew it. I returned to Portland a few months later and picked up another beautiful plant. Their plants may seem a little more expensive but the likelihood that these plants will outgrow and be healthier looking than places like Home Depot or OSH is very high.
google avatar

Yelp
This place is perfection! You name it, they have it. Everything is super organized and easy to maneuver with a large cart. They have some small pumpkins and gourds also! I even saw bins of apples! When you buy soil they have you pull your car up and it's loaded for you. Super simple. Super nice. Parking lot is a tad small and on the weekend it is slamming. May have to street park, but hey it's Portland right?!
google avatar

Yelp
Portland Nursery got their act together. They had everyone's safety in mind. The physical distancing was implemented, masks were required, and the inside store was closed. I was looking for mind and parsley plants and found them their. When I called ahead of time to ask if they had them, they answered right away and the person was nice and helpful. Everyone their is eager to help. They would ask for help themselves if they don't know the answer. The checking out process was safe, as you left your stuff on a table and stepped away, they scanned the items, and stepped away when it was time to pay. Parking is easy as they have their own parking lot and plenty of street parking. I didn't spend anytime looking at their other stuff, but I think they have everything a gardener might need.
google avatar

Le L.

Yelp
Great selection of plants and gardening. We came for the bonsai and we didn't disappoint. Price range from a few dollars to thousands depends on what you're looking for. Definitely recommend this place
google avatar

Jorge R.

Yelp
This place is overpriced and parking is very small for this business.. quality of the plants are good but if can't afford it don't get my business
google avatar

Denise B.

Yelp
This is a good place to find different plants then every other nursery. The staff is friendly. It is pricier than other nursery but the plants are in really good condition. You will always find more than you need. If you like gardening this is a must stop.

Yelp
I spend way too much money at Portland Nursery, but that's ok. It's one of the happiest places in the city because of all the colorful flowers, beautiful displays, and friendly employees. I love spending hours here learning about plants and dreaming up new ideas for my garden. Customers are paying for quality at Portland Nursery. Yes, the prices are a little higher than you'd find at some of the big home improvement stores. But the plants here aren't root-bound, they are well-established and conditioned to thrive in your garden. The plants will be bigger, stronger, and will yield more fruit or flowers in the long run. I can't tell you how much I appreciate the folks at Portland Nursery. They've helped me out with gardening questions on many occasions, and have also helped me source plants they don't have in stock. It always pays to have someone looking out for your best interest. The nursery is well-organized, with sections dedicated to house plants, shade plants, herbs, vegetables, annuals, perennials, trees and shrubs, as well as baskets and containers. Inside the main building you'll find seeds and bulbs, gardening books, and anything else you might need. For the best experience grab some coffee from their bar in the shade garden, find a cart to collect all the treasures you discover, and wander the grounds aimlessly for hours.

Yelp
I still love Portland Nursery. What can I say, it's my happy place. When I'm starting my vegetable garden, I go here for sheer varieties of tomatoes. When I'm looking for a special pot to put my plant in, I go here. I also like to just walk around there and look at all the plants! They also carry so many supplies like hummingbird feeder, soil amendments, trellis. I know, other places have them too but for whatever reason, they seem the have the most variety and good prices. I do feel the plants are competitively priced, bit better in quality compared to other nurseries. Also, their variety of roses is just insane! The employees are helpful if you ask. They have good social distancing rules in place such as one way inside their indoor store, and 6 ft away when cashing out. Yep, still my green thumb and heart goes to Portland Nursery. Love it!

Yelp
One of the delights of walking around the Mt Tabor neighborhood is looking at the houses, mostly built at about the same time, 100+ years ago, and enjoying the gardens and landscaping, each with the accumulated personal touches of a century of different homeowners. Portland Nursery was, according to their website, founded in 1907. So, I think we have them to thank for supplying most of the greenery that exists in this part of town. Seeing their overflow parking lot overflowing on any nice Saturday in the springtime, it's wonderful that they are still such a vital part of the community. Speaking of which, my wife used to teach at a neighborhood school, and for many years, Portland Nursery would host an annual fundraising auction - I can't imagine how much of their inventory the Nursery staff would have to move in order to put on a community event like this, but I'm thrilled to have such wonderful neighbors that are connected so deeply with their customers.

Koala T.

Yelp
The Division street Sunday staff are A-team! This is such a fantastic nursery selection with SO much good stuff and incredibly friendly knowledgeable staff that never seem put out to assist and share their expertise!

Yelp
This is the gold star of nurseries! Wow! They have everything you need for your landscape and gardens, and even houseplants. All well taken care of; the quality and selection is unparalleled. Lots of native plants and also hard to find varieties. Love walking around on a sunny day just to enjoy the beauty and take it all in! The nursery is well organized with different "rooms" for pots and vessels (huge selection of many styles), shade plants, sun annuals, perennials, shrubs, roses, veggies, and more. The locations are well marked with wide gravel paths leading you to the different areas. To make your garden your own sanctuary, there are benches, chairs, fountains, trellises, yard art and sculptures for sale. Personally, I love adding a touch of whimsy to my garden to give it personality. The staff is well educated on plants and their care; they have provided valuable guidance for new projects I have undertaken throughout the years. If you can't find a staff person outside, there is an information desk inside of the main building, in the back. This building also houses the indoor plants, garden tools, seeds of every type, hummingbird feeders, gifts, books, colorful watering cans and more! There is a large parking lot in front with an overflow next door. They have lots of carts different sizes, right out front of the entrance, making it easy to tow your selection around the large property. This place gets super crowded on weekends, especially those first warm and sunny ones, so be prepared! To avoid the crowds, go during the week or in the evening and enjoy the peacefulness along with the beauty. Portland Nursery is beautiful in every season. In the fall they have apple and pear tasting weekends, in addition to all the fall plants and bulbs. December brings on all the greens and garlands, and of course the spring is where they shine with all the vibrant annuals to bring instant color to your landscape and planters. I've been shopping at Portland Nursery for 19 years, and even though I have now downsized to a condo and have limited garden needs, it wouldn't be spring if I didn't spend a few hours taking in the beauty of this nursery.
google avatar

Yelp
This is our GO-TO place for all things plant like! We re did our yard last spring and spent many, many trips visiting this location. Staff are helpful and really knowledgable, they made novices like us feel comfortable. Weekends can be super busy- if you choose to stop by around the weekend be prepared for potential parking issues. Weekdays, especially in the morning, are super peaceful and the staff aren't as busy (and possibly more willing to help you). I felt super safe inside (they removed an isle, enlarging the other two) and appreciated how staff wore masks. For sure visit this location, you won't be disappointed!

Yelp
I am creating a no grass pollinator front yard. Big problem? I am elderly and live with advanced Multiple Sclerosis. I went to Portland Nursery and told them my dilemma. Moe came to help me. She is the greatest. She slowed down to my MS brain, and brought many shrubs and trees to me as I sat in a chair. She is so knowledgeable about everything "plants". In an hour, we chose 10 large shrubs and a couple trees. She helped me find my favorites and then showed me what she loved and thought would work. It was like working with a big sister who cared about me and knew more than I did. Thank you Moe. Thank you Portland Nursery for helping me make my dream blossom. And the prices were great. Actually less than many other nurseries.

Yelp
Thank you so much Portland Nursery for providing such a good experience while abiding by current needs for COVID. I will update this review when I revisit in the Spring or Summer. End of October is when we visited, for my girlfriend who has built an impressive indoor houseplant collection. What an amazing nursery, she must have felt like a kid in a candy store. However, because of the season, it felt like a store with barely any candy. I can't really blame them because thats what happens to plants when they can't survive in these conditions. But other nurseries are doing it, so what stops them? Despite the inventory problems, I know the potential of this nursery is worthy of 5 stars! I want to come back because the experience and environment was enough for a non-plant guy to want to give it another walk through. PS. Indoor houseplants were lacking, outdoor seemed to still have quite the selection!

Yelp
To make it clear.... I LOVE this place. The moment you walk in it transports you into another mindset. My imagination runs wild with beautiful scenarios that I can bring to life with my own two hands. The customer service here is impeccable. I have never had a question that remained unanswered. The staff is happy, helpful and educated. I buy my vegetables here for my garden, flowers and I go to the Apple Festival yearly in October. If you're interested in organic gardening they have a great variety of organic vegetables, a really great selection. I love the heirloom tomatoes variety....so many. I planted 13 varieties of heirloom tomatoes this year which was so much fun to see the different types, colors and their tastes. I attended the Apple festival last weekend. If you are interested in tasting and comparing varieties apples... They usually have at least 30 varieties to try out. There are also about 10 pear varieties to choose from. Of course along with having the varieties of apples they also have some sort of apple dessert for purchase, fresh pressed apple juice/cider and a small farmers market. The apple dessert this year was apple strudel. Yummy! The Apple/Pears are also for purchase. Enjoy!

Yelp
As a born again plant lover, this place is a dream. They have plants, plants and more plants, which made myself so darn happy. Although I wasn't able to find the one I was looking for (it wasn't their fault since it was out of season, if anyone in Portland knows where I can get a Purple passion plant, let me know!), I sure as well made up for it with their extensive variety. I was very impressed that they have a large outdoor area and try your skils on blueberries, strawberries, grapes, etc. I do admit that the prices are a bit higher than I expected, so I was choosy in what I wanted to try for the first time. Overall I liked my products, the staff were friendly, and hey, I got pretty flowers!

Richard A. D.

Yelp
I always check for plants that are appropriate for bonsai. The nursery has a variety of conifers, deciduous and smaller plants that make good starter plants for bonsai.
google avatar

Keith G.

Yelp
Having worked in nurseries before, I have very high standards for them. Portland Nursery is a wonderful place to go for just about all your plants needs! I've been to both locations and they are both fantastic. In my opinion, this location is slightly better for outdoor plants while the one near Mt Tabor has a more in-depth indoor plant selection. But both offer so, so much plant materials and pottery! I've now checked out like 60% of Portland's plant shops and I will say, the only place that isn't wildy out of control price-wise is Portland Nursery. I came here from Southern California where I guess growers are more plentiful and accessible, which in turn must help lower the prices in general. As far as customer service, I've had a better service experience at the Mt Tabor location, they seem friendlier in general. While this location, people are helpful, but slightly less welcoming. Not enough to take a star away though! I tend to be a quiet, solo shopper, and will ask for help when I need it. But I do like when employees at least acknowledge my presence with a simple hello or smile. I've been trying to build back my plant collection from when I had to move states...and Portland Nursery was the place for me to do so without going completely broke! Thank you!

Yelp
The workers were all so helpful and nice. I found one of my sought after plants, the sensitive (mimosa plant) and the workers were nice enough to teach me care for it. The place is huge and the plants were reasonably priced!

Debra D.

Yelp
Top quality plants, seeds, and roses. Amazing selection. Love the varieties of plants. Debra

Yelp
Excellent selection and high quality plants. Love the fountains available too! Loved the rose and tree selection

Yelp
The Stark Street location of Portland Nursery is really, really great! Their selection is enormous (to match their physical footprint), so you'll likely find things here that you won't be able to find anywhere else. The organization and signage is really great, allowing you to find what you're looking for pretty easily. The staff is very helpful and friendly, and all of the plants look PERFECT. Pricing is surprising...surprising in that some things that I've seen much more expensively elsewhere are significantly cheaper here (even though Portland's were bigger and in better health), and on others, the exact opposite was the case. They'll hold things for 24 hours without payment, or "indefinitely" with payment. If you're a train enthusiast (or even if you're not), this location has an actual railroad caboose in its parking lot. Pretty cool to see one of these up-close and in person. There is a sign by the registers stating facts about the caboose, too. This location also appears to have various ground covers and landscaping materials available (bark dust, wood nuggets, gravel, etc.).

Yelp
My first time here a few days ago. It was quite busy. The main reason for my negative review was the customer service. I asked a staff member outside if they had a certain perennial, and she dismissively said, "we might be out of them" and then walked away from me as if she couldn't be bothered. Yes, it was busy, but hello? Any offer to actually help me look? I don't see a reason to come back.
google avatar

Wayne G.

Yelp
This is one of the top three definitive nurseries to go to in Portland. The selection and quality is exceptional. Don't go here if you are looking for the lowest price. Go because you can buy plants with all kinds of qualities, growth characteristics and sizes. The staff is super helpful. Covid precautions are outstanding.

Yelp
This place is like Music Millenium, it's just a Portland fixture. When I lived down the street 35 years ago, I'd walk up to the nursery and they'd let me take one of their little red wagons home with all of my plants & return it later that day. Yes they are pricey, but you won't find a more knowledgeable group of people in town or healthier plants. My most recent experience was looking for Natchez Crepe Myrtles. I had bought a few closer to home from Farmington Gardens because 1. They were 45 min closer 2. I assumed there'd be cheaper than Ptld Nursery. I found beautiful Natchez plants that were 3 times the size of the Farmington crepe myrtles, they looked healthier AND they were $50 cheaper. Yeah, I bought them. The great thing about Portland Nursery is that they have an information desk with an expert always available in person or by phone for all of your concerns or questions. Give them a look, you won't be disappointed. If you want quantity then go to Home Depot, if you want high quality & to support a local Portland business, head to Portland Nursery.

Yelp
This nursery is the all good encyclopedia of plants in portland. If they don't have what your looking for they will help you possibly track it down locally or outwards. Eager to learn employees if they are unfamiliar with the plant which I think is awesome cause they love plants so much they want to learn with you! Awesome selection, beautiful displays, accommodating attitude, true gardener vibe. They are so into having you have a successful garden experience and they give you so much tips and tricks. Long live PN! Thank you for being a safe space for newbies and not condescending which unfortunately some newer nurseries in town are.

Cherry K.

Yelp
Beautiful selection and staff is kind, knowledgeable and helpful. Have bought numerous plants from Portland Nursery over the years.

Yelp
I love this place! Always have, but their response to COVID-19 has been phenomenal. Just amazing. Online orders for the first time. But the changes and rules they implemented at the store itself are just above and beyond. And the staff is still super friendly and helpful - just from a safe distance. Aside from that, this nursery consistently has the best selection and the most helpful staff. It's always a joy to go to Portland Nursery.

Yelp
My Darling Husband and myself shop and browse at this location of Portland Nursery. There is an Annual Cactus Sale... and we are often checking on the items/ Cacti for sale during that event. There is only one entrance to get into this location. You need to go past those Toll Booth looking smaller out buildings. There is a sign pointing the way. There are baskets, and larger dollies with wheels to move items to your car or SUV. This year my Husband's son was helping his grandfather with the Cactus event. There are many people with aprons on who work at this location of the Portland Nursery to answer your questions and to give you advice on which plants are best for the area/ yard/ or garden you are hoping to take care of. There are indoor plants as well as outdoor shrubs, plants, and trees. The best times to go looking for plants (all types) is two or three hours before closing time... and there are a lot of plants/ shrubs/ trees to look at. There are also items specifically for garden decor (decorations), all kinds of items actually. This location is Wheelchair accessible, if you were wondering. There is an indoor store. A few years ago... there was a stack of Potting Soil in one of the corners/ areas inside the store. The parking lot might be full, if you get to this location and everyone and their Aunt is already parked here, though.

Yelp
Going to Portland Nursery just makes me happy. Beautiful grounds and wonderful selection. Knowledgeable staff too.

Yelp
Per previous reviews, I'm fond of so much about the place. The annual Apple Festival is a must attend. Sadly though, the $3.99 Apple Crisp ala mode (soft serve) was terrible. It was soggy and cold, nothing warm and crisp about it. :-(

Ami K.

Yelp
Would give five stars, but didn't have the chance to ask for help. 4 stars it is! Came here to find shade plants for the back fence in our yard. Found the shade plant area and helped ourselves to a good variety of fuschias of different colors. To be honest, the picking were slim on that day. I believe it was close to closing on a sunny Saturday after weeks of rain. I didn't have time to peruse the entire premises, but they had many rooms of plants I didn't get to explore. I will be back someday, on my own to look at everything. Then I can truly assess the plant diversity and hopefully engage with the staff beyond checking out at the end.

Yelp
Best nursery in the Portland area. Heard there's a second location and I'll definitely check it out. But this one was really nice to go to.

Yelp
I've been attending the Annual Apple Tasting Festival for years, and it is one of my favorite fall events! Essentially, during Apple season, this nursery has a couple of weekends where you can come and taste TONS of different apples for FREE. There is usually a bit of a line, but then you get to slowly walk down a long stretch of table and taste more apple varieties than you even knew existed. They provide an info sheet for you to add comments and note which types are you favorite so that you know which apples to buy on your way out ;). There are also usually activities for kids, and they have a selection of photo boards with face cut outs for the requisite Festival photo ops. Every time I have attended there was live music, snacks available for purchase, as well as free tastes of fresh pressed cider. All in all, it's a great free event, and you might be tempted to bring some bags of apples home!

Yelp
When you see a five star review, you have to wonder if the person leaving it is just star happy. Let me tell you, I am not star happy, I am happy with everything that the Portland Nursery has to offer. The Portland Nursery is short of parking, but only because so many people want to be there and explore. The selection of everything from shrubs to wine grapes is so impressive compared to other nursery's that this should consistently be your first stop when looking into a new gardening project. The staff have always been remarkably helpful for my family. Telling us not only methods of approaching our new project, but their personal experiences with that particular plant and giving tips on how to get the most out of it (whatever it is). If they can't speak to the nitty gritty of a problem (say, a soil issue) they will find someone with experience with that plan and those soil issues to help you. I promise you, this is the place you need to be. Pricing is comparable to other nurseries and their non plant goods (watering cans, soil amendments etc...) are varied and priced on par as well. Even if you are new to gardening and don't want to break the bank on your first go round, they have something for you. Tell your friends, this should and is your one stop shop.
