Portland Sweet Jam on MLK

What an awesome place to have brunch. There is live jazz musicans setting a relaxing mood. The staff is very friendly and professional. The food is excellent and I will need to go back to try everything on the menu. I had fried catfish with a sweet potato waffle with pecan butter. Yes it was as good as it sounds and better. I can't say enough great things about this restaurant. I hope whomever reads this enjoys their experience as much as I did. I might see you there.

I give them a 2 because they're not consistent. I was introduced to Sweet Jams 1st location and, was over the moon when I found out they'd have one closer but out of the 4x's I've been only 2 were good (2 stars). Shrimp and grits that's all I get. My friend got chicken and waffles and his wing wasn't cooked all the way through. The original location never ever disappoints. For the prices you pay the food should be good all the time. Happy they've expanded but I won't be back to the "K" location.

Decent food, service and atmosphere, but incredibly expensive - at least for breakfast. I guess I expect more than a plain waffle and a piece of fried catfish for $18. At those prices they should be something special. Not sure how they are going to compete with such favorites nearby as Tin Shed, Helser's, Pine State Biscuit where you can get excellent food for less money. Won't go back there for breakfast/brunch/lunch, but may give them a try for dinner.

Absolutely delicious Southern food. The cheesy grits were wonderful and the Southern style biscuits were to die for. The service was excellent. Our wait person was friendly, efficient and accommodating. Definitely recommend you try it!

The biscuits here are life changing. I do not say that lightly. They are a little different from classic biscuits, but they are amazing! Had the cheese and grits, sweet potato fries, chicken and waffles. All very good. Very friendly and attentive staff. Can't wait to go back!

The food was good any plates were huge. The prices are on the high side, but there are some good values on the menu. (My wife got almost three full meals from her breakfast.). This isn't the place to go of you want a quick bite, but it is the place to go if you want some breakfast that will stick to your ribs all day long.

The service was the best part. Prices are high but probably because that’s what pays for the live music. The food was nothing to write home about except the biscuits which were amazing. What I don’t understand is how can the coffee be terrible in a city like Portland where there are so many fantastic roasters, and what they charge for a mug should more than cover good beans and full strength. If you’re OK with an expensive mediocre breakfast in exchange for some live music, this is your place.

Excellent food entrees! Owner was friendly and gracious; he stopped by our reserved dining room to welcome our party of diners and ensure our satisfaction. I'm from AZ and had heard about Sweet Jams even before visiting Ptld. It lived up to every good thing that I'd heard, and was well worth the visit. G.V.B.
