Someone Did a Really Bad Job Breaking into Besaw’s - Eater Portland

Jazzy brunch spot Sweet Jam goes silent on MLK - Eater Portland

"Sweet Jam, the brunch spot known for its sweet potato waffles and accompanying live jazz, has played out the Northwest altogether. Within two weeks, owners have closed both Sweet Jam locations, starting with the recently opened MLK location. Owners announced the Portland closure on the restaurant’s Facebook page earlier this month, directing loyal brunch and blues fans to the restaurant’s location near Beaverton. Then, 10 days later, the shop announced that Beaverton was a no-go, as well. Restaurateur Frank Taylor started serving Sweet Jam biscuits and Benedicts in the former Horn of Africa space this fall after opening the first location in 2016. Taylor brought along a friend Jerry Nottage, who said he cooked for R&B greats like Aretha Franklin while working in Detroit. The menu specialized in soul food: Southern-fried catfish or chicken on waffles, cheese shrimp grits with bacon, and Creole jambalaya with shrimp, andouille sausage and chicken." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

Decided to check out Sweet Jama for a weekday brunch a few days ago. It was okay, but nothing amazing. The front host was very friendly with us and our son and we were seated right away. Our waitress was very strange- not particularly friendly and very short with our three year old. The food was okay, as well. It tasted like regular diner food, however, where we were expecting exceptional, upscale Southern food. It is pretty expensive for the mediocre food and service you recieve, though the restaurant itself has a nice atmosphere. We really wanted to be impressed, but probably won't be back.

Place?.. updated and trendy! The bartender and staff are very attentive and sweet. I tried the shrimp and grits with catfish and let me tell you.... This food was the best breakfast ive had in a very long time the cat fish was flaky and full of flavor. The grits are hearty cheesy and honestly to die for. Ill def. Be back for more. 10 star place!

Crazy good!! My Dad was from Mississippi and raised me to appreciate real Southern cooking. This is the real deal.

Great traditional southern dishes. The batter on the fried dishes has an amazing flavor and texture that I haven't found anywhere else. Great drinks. Great coffee. Great jazz band on Sundays (and a few Saturdays!) Super friendly staff. There's only one thing negative I can say: poor visibility from the main road. I only wish more people knew about this place! It's packed on the weekends, but not so much in the middle of the week. Easy to find and park once you know it's there. I've tried most of the menu at this point and every dish has been great. Not cheap, but you get what you pay for.

I ordered biscuits and gravy, the only complaint I have is the wait time. The food was very good as well as the atmosphere, the fireplace was pleasant as well as the tasteful music. I kept what I didn't eat as leftovers so the portions are about average. I did come during a busy time so the wait time could have been because of that. If you have around an hour to spend on breakfast this spot is very worth it, I recommend it. I'm giving 5 stars because I don't know if the wait time is common or I just came out a bad time.

I think this is the first review I've ever written. I was not at all impressed. Ordered chicken and waffles with a sweet potato waffle. Couldn't even tell that the waffle was a sweet potato one- tasted like a regular waffle. It was soggy. The chicken was okay, crispy, but had zero flavor. And the prices... really? $18 for my meal. I'd rather go to Screen Door and wait the two hours. The service was great, my waiter was very attentive and friendly, but don't think I'll be coming back.
