If you're looking for a place with personality, then this is it. The Portobello Hotel - which opened back in 1970 - has a bit of rock and roll about it and as such is popular with media folk and models. Indeed Croydon's most famous export, La Moss, once holed up here with then beaux Johnny Depp, and - legend has it - soaked in a bath filled with bubbly.
The supermodel stayed in room 16 (the one with the circular bed), one of the so called 12 'special rooms'- each of which has a character of its own. The Japanese room (number one if you're interested) boasts a small sea shell patio, while the cool, colonial room (number two) has a hint of bohemia about it and number six is pure decadence containing as it does a three foot deep, gilded, gold claw bath. Meanwhile music maestro Robbie Williams once climbed up the steps to clamber into the huge four-poster bed that hails from Hampton Court Palace in room 13. The troubled singer's former duet partner - pop princess, Kylie Minogue - is another of The Portobello's rumoured high profile past guests. I say rumoured because staff at reception (Gloria in particular is great fun and thoroughly knowledgeable about the property), somewhat maddeningly refuse to either confirm or deny the celeb quota.
The remaining 12 'regular' rooms (five doubles, two twins and five singles) aren't as remarkable as the special suites, but nonetheless still elate. I was lucky enough (I won a competition!) to stay in number six and anyone following in my footsteps can expect some serious style. Old and new are blended effortless together and consequently curved sofas (tailored made to fit each room) towering four poster beds, Victorian-esque bath tubs and showers, beautiful antique wardrobes and writing bureaus share space with Bang and Olufsen interactive televisions.
Beyond the bedrooms, there's the lobby where you'll find an impressive grandfather clock and a small but perfectly formed drawing room that harks back to a bygone era (indeed I half expected to be joined in the drawing room by Scott Fitz Gerald). This calm sanctuary is the place to take your complimentary continental breakfast - a sizeable spread of warm buttery croissants, slabs of toast served with every conceivable kind of condiment and your choice of tea, coffee or orange juice - with the morning papers. There's a promising if pricey snack menu in place later in the day, but most guests eat at the institution that is Julie's. A pleasant 10 minute stroll away, this thespian favourite serves up excellent European fare in an ultra romantic leafy setting, but will also deliver to your door if you want to linger a little longer in your room (trust me, there the kind you never want to leave).
Other restaurants worth a punt in the area include the perennially popular Osteria Basilico on Kensington Park Road, so hip it hurts Japanese eatery E&O, Tom's Deli on Westbourne Grove for hearty yet healthy lunches and sweet treats, not forgetting the always buzzy brasserie at the Electric on Portobello Road. For a post dinner drink, try the drop dead gorgeous grotto that is the Beach Blanket Babylon.
Finally, don't forget to factor in some retail therapy - after all your bijoux base is only a stone's throw from Portobello Road; aka shop till you drop land. If you're staying over a Saturday be sure to browse around the market of the same name which is choc full of treasures, although in my mind Notting Hill's true treasure is The Portobello Hotel itself.
