On the Grid : Ports of New York

"This is one of the hidden gems in Ithaca. Difficult to find but worth the hunt, this beautiful little building and the winery it houses has been a labor of love for owner Frederic Bouche. He greets you at the door, a one man operation, and gives you the history of his family's winery in France and a tour of the process for creating his "Meleau" or port, as it would be called if trade agreements did not prohibit the use. He makes both a red and a white from local grapes processed to juice by one of the area vineyards, adding honey to provide more sugar to the fermentation process. Stop in and pick up a bottle for a picnic, but don't be in a hurry, you'll leave knowing far more about port wine than you did going in." - St. John Design Group

Google
I would absolutely recommend! the owner is knowledgeable and loves to share his knowledge. All of the wines were good, I thought the Bordeaux blend was AMAZING, and I loved the darker port as well. with only four wines to taste it felt like a wide range of flavors.

Google
A must see place in Ithaca for wine lovers! Very authentic and unique experience of wine tasting and culture. The visit was very enjoyable and full of information. The wine was superb, tasty, and unique. A lot of history in that place, and you will have the chance to see part of the process of wine making with a beautiful explanation from the owner.

Google
The couple (Bouché) that owns and run this winery are just the best. I've been on many winery tours on my 70 years, but this one taught me more about the French methods of wine making than any other tour I've been on. Just really fun and educational.

Google
Really nice place. The owners are very friendly and super informative. They make some really good wine. They take time to explain how they make their wine as well as where they are from. Mostly French wine here and it's really good.

Google
Frederic was phenomenal! His wine making knowledge and the history of his family as winemakers in France was so interesting! The wine was excellent as well as their display of antique wine making tools that he brought from France. Highly recommend a visit to Ports of New York!

Google
This was an amazing tour, the owner was so knowledgeable and was very passionate about sharing the French ways of winemaking. The wines were top notch as well as personal experience with the guide. Highly recommend!!!!

Google
So my family and I are visiting the fingerlakes region and looking for some wineries to visit for a day. I happen across this location and it piques my intrest. So despite all of us not being dry wine drinkers we still decide to pop in and check it out, and boy am I glad we did. First of all the owners were the most knowledgable wine makers I have ever encountered, which is saying something as I hail from a big wine region myself. They not only educated us about their five wines, but educated us about the difference between an american wine and a true french wine, which is the tradition they follow being a fifth generation wine maker. They also have a small museum in their winery which we learned a lot from too. So now to the wines themselves, they have five they make. The first two I tasted were dry which as I mentioned in the beginning I don't prefer, but they were palatable to me and could drink if I were offered a glass. They also have two ports they make which I liked both of them. They also have a sparkling wine which I wasnt able to sample because of its delicate shelf life once opened. If you're in the Ithaca NY area I strongly recommend visiting this place. They also have the cutest little mascot named Tucker working there.

Google
We came to visit Ports of NY Winery after visiting several other vineyards and wineries along the Cayuga trail. I’m glad we saved this for last because it was my favorite experience of our weeklong trip. All of that is due to Frédéric, the winemaker, giving us an excellent tasting experience. It wasn’t just about the wine itself, but about the grapes and the history behind them. My wife and I were the only ones in the shop when we arrived and it was perfect. Frédéric has a wonderful collection of vintage winemaking equipment from France setup for viewing and learning about too. All in all, I highly recommend this experience. You won’t find a more genuine, kind, and experienced wine expert. Oh, and the wine is FANTASTIC. I dare you to walk out without a bottle….

Yelp
If you are in Ithaca you HAVE to go here. The owner is soooo nice and amazing friendly and knowledgeable about wines in the region and a great history of wine in Finger Lakes. He has an amazing French accent and his family has been making wine for centuries and he and wife moved here in 90s and he opened the winery. The wine is very good and a tasting of 4 wines is $9 each person. He tells you all about the wine, how it's made and how it compares to European and California wines. I generally don't like red or ports but these I actually enjoyed and we bought a port. There is a small museum of antique French winemaking items and a self guided tour of the actual wine making area. He gave us some suggestions of other wineries to visit in the area and a few to avoid haha.

Yelp
Our introduction to Finger Lakes wines was here at Ports of New York. Having lived in northern California, and now Washington state, we are familiar with west coast wines and varietals, but NY wine is a new adventure. We had a nice tour and tasting learning about family history and the production of upstate NY wine. The grape varietals were the same as we are used to, Cabernet, Merlot, Cab Franc, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris but they produce blends, both of grapes and vintages. You won't find a Cabernet from 2018, but you can get a a red blend with wine from several vintages. We enjoyed the visit, our tasting, and the history lesson and purchased a bottle for later.

Yelp
We had a lovely tasting experience here, with a tasting of two wines and two fortified wines("Meleau specialty wines"), a red and a white of each. This is a family business, with Mr. Frédéric Bouché hailing from a wine producing family from the Calvados region in France. They create their artisanal wines by blending various locally grown vinifera and hybrid grapes. The tasting presentation was very informative, and it was followed by a self-guided tour, which again was generally educational and informative for wine enthusiasts, and specifically described the solera system utilized to produce ports around the world, and since 2006, their Meleau specialty wines, which compare well with other known fortified wines such as sherries and ports. We sampled the Quotidian table wines(ABV 12% and RS of 0.3% for the white and 0.1% for the red) which are currently priced at $23 for the white and $26 for the red, and the Meleau white and red fortified wines (ABV 17% and RS 6%) and each priced at $52 for a 500 ml bottle. My favorite was the red Meleau, composed of a blend 53% Cabernet Franc, 31% from a hybrid grape developed at Cornell University named Noiret, and 6% 175 proof grape spirits. Both Quotidian wines were delicious as well and much better than your good table wines, and again my palate favored the red blend of 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Cabernet Franc, and 20% Merlot. They also have a sparkling 100% Reisling wine that we did not taste in this occasion.

Yelp
We were fortunate enough to be the only ones when we went in and we felt like we were having a personal tasting. The owner Frederic omes from a line of wine makers in France. He knew his stuff. The wines here were truly unique and exceptional. He kept us engaged, even my 2 year old had fun. There is a small museum at the back that had wine making tools from over a century ago which is quite interesting. This is a very nice place with great wines.

Yelp
Truly a hidden gem in Ithaca, off the beaten path. This is a small winery inspired by the true traditions of France. Joanna and Frederic make a conscious choice of not joining the other wine trail routes due to a) expenses and b) their small-business, but that isn't a reason to not come and pay them a visit. It was pretty busy, but Joann and Frederic expertly balanced 1) The tastings with 2) People filing in and giving them a history/science lesson about the wine-making process. They will also share with you the "floor" where it all happens. You really feel warmth, kindness, and comfortable here, even with COVID -- they make it a point to be safe. The wines really impressed us and we ended up going home with a bubbly, a red, and a white. We will definitely be coming back on our next visit to Ithaca.

Damian R.

Yelp
Sorry but I need to share the other side of this coin. Went there and was expecting a lot based upon the reviews. My wife and I were in the small building for 15 minutes, explored all spaces, calling out for assistance without anyone coming forth. To be honest, we were the only car in the lot and even walked round the outside. Nobody ever showed up to help us. But we snapped a pic of the wine barrel to prove we made the stop. Can't say they are a winery growing their own grapes giving the location and no vineyards.
google avatar

Yelp
Do not pass up this quaint winery on your tour. It's just an old little building filled with history. There is a small museum-like room with winemaking antiques. The owner is from France and he was knowledgeable and welcoming.
google avatar

Bree C.

Yelp
Had a great time visiting Ports! We were given a tour of the tasting room and some background on French style wines. They also had a display of wine making artifacts from Normandy that have been passed down from family generations. After the tour we did a tasting and loved the red Meleau so much we took a bottle home.
google avatar

Tong S.

Yelp
A small winery but with amazing history. Frederic introduced the wine selection and the process of making wine in a detailed and fascinating manner. Highly recommend their port wine, really one of the kind. P.S. careful measures during COVID time. Appreciate that.

Yelp
I really enjoyed this place. This is a small winery owned by a husband and wife team. The husband is from France, the wife from the finger lakes, and the culture and experience that they both bring leads to some really impressive wines for the area. There are only four wines that they offer for the tasting - two port style wines and two "table" wines with more complexity than more of the typical wines of the area. Just a great stop for people who love good wine and wine history. I enjoyed them all. I have to mention too that I can't believe all the people that have complained about paying for a tasting. The tasting free was typical ($5/person) and the wines were well priced. They were at a lower price point, in fact, than most finger lakes wines, and at a higher quality. I definitely recommend a visit.

Yelp
Frederic is as knowledgeable and friendly as his wines, port and sherry are spectacular. As a true first- class sommelier he has a great way of explaining his 4 generations of winemaking along with the NY region's grapes he uses. For the price, his tour and wines are the best deal in Ithaca.

Marie C.

Yelp
This was the nicest winery experience my fiancé and I have had! Frederic was so kind and genuine and gave us an amazing tour of the winery and history of his family. This was our favorite stop of our trip through Ithaca. Don't miss it!
google avatar

Lauren S.

Yelp
The place was interesting to walk through, but I wasn't loving any of the wines. Only 4 choices of wines for sale. I did like looking at all the wine paraphernalia though.
google avatar

Veronica K.

Yelp
This little winery is very easy to miss. However if you're into wine, especially ports, this is a must see if you're in Ithaca. The wines produced here are genuinely among the best I've ever had. Now I've spent a lot of time drinking a lot of wine, both domestic and imported, so for me to say that is something. The owner Frederic is a charming and personable man who knows a thing or two about port production. For three dollars he gives you a tasting of the two Meleau wines he produces and a tour of the facilities. His facility is small but he has a large collection of antiques brought over from France. If nothing else it's a great history lesson to see some of the artifacts there. If you like port wine, or wine in general, I really suggest you check this place out. A bottle will run you close to fifty dollars, but the quality and longevity of the wine makes it well worth it. A hidden gem if there ever was one.
google avatar

Brian S.

Yelp
I came here with a small group as part of our annual camping trip in Ithaca! This small little winery finds its home in a loft type building and run by one gentleman from France who is carrying on the family business. Ports of NY offers tours and a tasting of the red and white port for $2/person. I was very impressed with the owner's attitude and explanation of his whole set-up. He was very easy to talk to and and interesting to listen to hear him talk about his family's business and how he makes his wine here. After a tour of the first floor, he will bring you upstairs into the loft area where there are two couches and some chairs that will sit at least 10 people. There he has pictures on the wall for significant events in his life and lots of memorabilia. Enjoy some tastings and chat for a bit. You will definitely have a good time,
google avatar

Mark D.

Yelp
Loved this place! Coming from a family that has made Port wine for generations, I wasnt too impressed with the wine, but many in my group were. And no matter what, the man that runs this one man show is a gem! He was very friendly, and explained a lot about his background and how he makes the wine. You get a wine tour, and two tastings for $5. Definitely worth a visit!

Elizabeth Z.

Yelp
We walked in simply to enjoy the building and its aesthetic, and upon doing so, we were offered a tasting by the wife of the owner. We gladly accepted, but were not informed there would be a cost associated with the kind offer. Alas, there was. We were rather surprised at the addition of these costs, and though we paid, knowledge beforehand would have been appreciated. I was enjoying a pleasant conversation with another member of our group when the time came to pay, and I was shocked to realize we had been charged for the tastings as well as the bottle of wine I had selected. In and of itself, the cost was not the difficulty we had, but rather the deceptive addition of the cost to the bill. Furthermore, my boyfriend returned to the location the next day to discuss what had happened, and was greeted with the abysmal attitude of the owner upon voicing his concerns at the hidden costs. Attitude is everything, and it is what brings customers back. Solely resulting from the poor attitude displayed by the one with whom the success of the company lies, these customers will not be returning.

Yelp
Awesome experience speaking with Frederic. Hands down the most involved and informational tasting I've ever been to. Not to mention the tremendous wine. Would recommend this to anyone, especially those who are unfamiliar with winemaking.
google avatar

Nick M.

Yelp
Would have given this a great review BUT... We walked inside to quickly look and show my family what it was like inside. The owners wife offered tastings and we partook. Afterward she charged us about $18.00 but never told us it would cost money. Very upset that this happened and my girlfriend had to pay it because I was taking an I. Porta t phone call. I never even knew she charged her. Never going back with that sort of trickery.
google avatar

Yelp
Cool place. Cool story told by the friendly owners. Wine was pretty good too! Dog was really cute too!
google avatar

Gina B.

Yelp
Great place for wine testing. The owner is actually from France and he know a lot about the wine. A must place to visit for authentic French wines.
google avatar

Barry H.

Yelp
The Normandy, France history comes through in this place and our tastings (a private one, at that, as we were the only ones there) was led by the owner's wife. The owner's family began wine making in Normandy before he came to the United States. The Normandy winery survived WWII and is now a museum, but the practice is now here. They get their grapes from local farms, but the wines are made on premises. The French background comes through with every wine and the ports are something else. Truly a different type of winery and a surprising find in Ithaca proper as opposed to others around the Finger Lakes region.

Aisha V.

Yelp
A very polite and knowledgeable couple own this place. I had a great tasting experience. It has a very different feel than other wineries because of the history of the family and I definitely recommend this place.
google avatar

Todd C.

Yelp
I like bed this place. Very informative and the wine was great. The dog was the softest dog I have ever pet.
google avatar

Laura F.

Yelp
This was a great find! The wines & ports were excellent and we loved the historical background as well.
google avatar

Randolph Z.

Yelp
This guy deserves all five stars. I'm not really a wine fan, and I'm probably the cheapest person you'd ever meet, but I was so impressed that I bought a bottle. For $40, you can get some fantastic wine. I think. The last 30 bottles of wine I bought were $2.50 at Trader Joe's, so don't take my word for what's good. All I can say is that the wine was worth it. The tour, more than worth it. For a couple bucks, you get a fantastic history and learn some this-and-that about winery-ing. If I enjoyed it, you certainly can.
google avatar

Marissa N.

Yelp
Best spot to visit off the wine trail that I've found so far. Like most of the other reviews, the owner is there since his operation is so small. He explains the process and how it differs from others in the area. If you have the time and the interest and I suppose depending on the crowd he will share his families history and stories about the artifacts he has on display. All this and the port is good too. It was a special weekend and we didn't have to pay the tasting fee, which I would of had to say would be steep $2.00? a person for a taste of two ports. He did have free tasting coupons laying around. We did buy a bottle for $40.00.
google avatar

Little G.

Yelp
What a lovely place, run by a lovely man who tells great stories & spouts knowledge about winemaking, calvados making & spirit making with a great passion. The tour is thorough & thoughtful - great for experts and those just curious. Excellent products available as well. His love of his craft is infectious.
google avatar

Shaniece M.

Yelp
Frederic was an amazing host! The port selection was impeccable. My favorite was the Méléau white. He gave us a tour of the facility and was extremely knowledgable and friendly. One of my favorite wineries so far! I will definitively be coming back to pick up some more!!
google avatar

Tim L.

Yelp
On a recent trip to Ithaca, we were looking for something fun to do on a rainy day- the tasting and small tour here definitely delivered!! We were the only ones here and the amazing owner sat down with us and gave us a wonderful, informative and fun lesson about Port! He was so friendly and he has an amazing story about his family and he came to bring the family business to Ithaca! The port was amazing and we left with 5 bottles to be saved until we return next time!
google avatar

Danielle A.

Yelp
This is a must stop for anyone in the surrounding area. The proprietor is knowledgeable and explains every detail of his wine making process as well as the antiques throughout the winery. The red port is absolutely delicious.

Yelp
We stumbled upon Ports of New York by accident many years ago when they were a new business in the Finger Lakes Wine region and we are so glad we did. Watching the business grow from those early days has been a treat and on our most recent visit this week we were pleased to see that they now offer two table wines, a white and red. The table wines are very light in a French Bordeaux style, young and very easy to drink. The port style Meleau are truly the reason to not miss Ports of New York. They are sweet and dry at the same time and while not as pricey as the common ice wines of the region, definitely worth every penny of the $48 price tag. The owner, Frederic, is always happy to tell the intriguing story of his family's wine making history in France, so be sure to ask and check out his collection of memorabilia from the family winery.

Nicole G.

Yelp
Awesome experience! Fredrick was amazing! Came here for a bachelorette party and he was funny and witty and full of cool tips and interesting facts and kept us all interested! Plus the wine is one of the better wines I've tasted up in Ithaca! I would come back here again!! Keep up the good work!
google avatar

Jill F.

Yelp
Ports of New York is such a nice experience and we learned so much from Frederick that I went *twice* in one week! He has so much enthusiasm regarding his family's history with wine and is an expert in his field. My boyfriend and I liked both of the ports we tasted very much. We look forward to when Ports of NY starts to sell bottled wine; we will definitely be back to buy some! I would highly recommend stopping by to anyone in the area or visiting.
google avatar

Doug S.

Yelp
This is a hidden gem in the finger lakes. Frederic knows wine and creates a wine like no other in the region. His space makes you feel like you're in a tasting room in a small winery in France. Do your self a favor an visit Ports of New York!
google avatar

Ian T.

Yelp
Amazing to see the history behind the making of the wine and a family member who continues on the great tradition. Simply put a very enjoyable place and a must see when coming to Ithaca.
google avatar

John P.

Yelp
I enjoyed it. Believe me, I enjoyed everything about the place. I'm a recovering alcoholic, though, and had to leave because being there was sort of a trigger for me.
google avatar

Sandra S.

Yelp
Our party of 12 walked in for the tasting tour today and are thrilled we did! Frederic gave a lively and spirited tour and clearly is an artist of his trade. The fortified wine was delicious! I recommend this place to anyone looking for a wine tour with a unique flair!

Paula C.

Yelp
You know why Ports of New York has so many 5-star reviews? Because it's wonderful and unusual and should not be missed. My husband I really enjoy a good port, but I was skeptical we'd find a good one so far from Portugal. We were delighted to find Frederick and his wonderful wine tasting room. We took the brief and informative tour and tasted two glorious ports. I bought a bottle of white and shipped a bottle of red to my sister (who is a true oenophile). Please, if you live near Ithaca or are visiting the Finger Lakes wineries, skip one of the factory wine-conveyor-belt places, and stop by Ports of New York. You will be delighted!

Erin B.

Yelp
Worth the stop to learn about the history of French wine and port making. When we went they only had 2 ports and 2 wines to taste but all were delicious!

Beth T.

Yelp
Really nice little winery with four delicious offerings. Even better was the history given by the proprietress, giving the back story of her French husband's family's wine making in Normandy, with a dose of what happened there during WWII. Highly recommend.

Jenny B.

Yelp
Lovely little winery. The owner was so kind and very knowledgeable! The port was great and the tour was appreciated. I loved his little dog too :)

Gregory T.

Yelp
We in the Northeast are fortunate to have the great Finger Lakes wine region to visit, and Ports of New York is a must on any wine-related visit or day trip to Ithaca. Not a vineyard, but a real, working winery right in downtown Ithaca. The owner, Frederick, comes from a master winemaking family in Normandy, and he is the real deal. This place is a combination winery, where wine is being made, blended and aged, and museum. I have learned more about wine from a couple of visits here than I've learned in years elsewhere. For example: I finally understand why French wine is labeled according to region (Bordeaux, Burgundy, etc.) while California wines focus on varietals (Cab, Chardonnay, etc.). This has done wonders for my appreciation. It also helps that the place looks like it was built by a master craftsman -- because it was!

Caroline G.

Yelp
So happy we visited Ports of Wine. Such an intimate and wonderful tasting. Loved to learn about the history of the owners family. Such a great experience and Tucker was a sweet addition to the wine.
google avatar

Durval T.

Yelp
I agree with the reviews. If you are the Ithaca area and enjoy learning about wine and the wine making process, then this is a must see. His ports are not the traditional Portuguese ports, but they are a great fortified wine of their own.

Ariel T.

Yelp
I loved the tour that they offered and loved the wine sampling. We brought home the wine and it tasted just as delicious. I also loved the tour and the artifacts that they shared from his family. If you've ever thought about seeing this place but haven't, please do so. You can tell the man who owns this place is passionate about his craft. That says a lot.

Nick D.

Yelp
Highly recommend. Great host and fascinating history of his family winery. Wines were great too.
google avatar

Aaron W.

Yelp
On a day trip to Ithaca over the summer, my sister and I decided to enjoy a tasting (since we were practically in wine country!). Great customer service, and genuine atmosphere. This location felt as much like a museum as it did a place to sample some pretty delectable port. If you have a half hour, why not let yourself indulge?
google avatar

Samuel D.

Yelp
Visiting the Ports of New York and speaking with Frederic was a truly wonderful experience. He is brimming with passion and knowledge of his craft. our group entered knowing very little about port, and left with a true appreciation for the spirit. Frederic is exactly what we were looking for in a gastro-tourism experience. We were very pleased with the tasting and left with product not because he was a good salesman, but because we had such an appreciation for the product he creates. It is delicious, and although he produces two styles of port, we could not have been happier. He does two things and does them extremely well. This was a highlight of our experience in Ithaca.
