The 21 Best Restaurants In San Sebastián 2024

"Asador Portuetxe was once an isolated farmhouse, but now it’s a restaurant in the city’s warehouse district that fires up its charcoal grills each morning with one mission: grill everything. Basques are famous for their grillhouses, which are known as erretegia, and Portuetxe has one of the best menus in town. The grilled fish is excellent, as is the txuleta, a king-sized Basque bone-in steak that’s perfect to split with a group. Sip a classic Rioja red or crisp northern white at the long, family-style tables. You’ll probably leave smelling like charcoal, but just like camping, it’s part of the fun.  " - marti buckley

Took a bus from the main city centre to get to Portuetxe restaurant for lunch. It was a rainy day so the restaurant was a little quiet but nothing wrong with that. The grill outside smelt amazing. We ordered the grilled hake and steak. The fish was grilled to perfection. Very soft and moist. The fried garlic chips were a nice touch too. The steak was also grilled to perfection. Might look a little too pink for some people but that was perfect as it was still sort of resting as we made our way through the meal.

The restaurant is a 10-15 minute drive from the La Concha area and also easily assessable by public transit. The restaurant is located in a cellar and has an interesting vibe. The service is great and the food is good. A great option if you're looking for an upscale experience. Restaurant is very popular so probably best to make a reservation in advance, especially if it's the weekend or a holiday.

The food is very fresh and simple but delicious. We were 8 adults and 2 kids, enjoying the food the waiters were a bit impatient, some of us felt like they were being not so polite

We came to Portuexe on the recommendation of a local, and it absolutely lived up to the hype. The restaurant is in a beautiful old building that still retains its original charm, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. From start to finish, the experience was exceptional. The staff were attentive, welcoming, and gave us excellent wine recommendations that paired perfectly with our meal. We had a reservation for 8pm and arrived a little early—just a heads up, the doors only open right at 8. For food, we had the scrambled egg with kokotxas, Jabugo ham, prawns, and for the main course, the steak with green salad, peppers, and fries. Every dish was outstanding—perfectly prepared and bursting with flavour. We were pretty stuffed by dessert so we shared the strawberries- they were so simple and so delicious. Highly recommend if you’re in San Sebastián and looking for a meal that you will remember for a lifetime!

Post match lunch on route to Bilbao! Food service ambience on point. Would definitely return again if in this part of the world again.

Great Basque restaurant with a lot of character. Exceptional quality food. Monica was the most gracious host, providing great wine and food recommendations. Everything we tried was very good. Highly recommended! Reservation is a must (use email)

It was the Peter Luger of Basque food. Traditional decor, rude waiters, exaggerated prices. Had a great turbot, peppers and clams, but the grilled dishes were missing something and relied a lot on salt. Amazing custard pastry dessert.
