The 25 Best Restaurants In San Sebastián - San Sebastián - The Infatuation

"Asador Portuetxe was once an isolated farmhouse, but now it’s a restaurant in the city’s warehouse district that fires up its charcoal grills each morning with one mission: grill everything. Basques are famous for their grillhouses, which are known as erretegia, and Portuetxe has one of the best menus in town. The grilled fish is excellent, as is the txuleta, a king-sized Basque bone-in steak that’s perfect to split with a group. Sip a classic Rioja red or crisp northern white at the long, family-style tables. You’ll probably leave smelling like charcoal, but just like camping, it’s part of the fun." - marti buckley

It was our first dinner to start off our San the Sebastian trip and boy or boy did it start off with a banger. One of the best meals we had on our four day trip. Everything we ordered was just perfect and delicious excellent quality food one of the best meals I had in my life, professional waitresses, and beautiful atmosphere

I didnt like the fish dishes. Baby squid, angler fish etc. tasted bad. Only morena crockets were not bad. I also ate Tbone and it was good. However desserts were not delicious.

Simple and pure preparation of traditional foods. Very delicious. Recs - white asparagus, fish soup, ribeye, chips, salad, cheesecake (no bake American style)

Basque cider house experience in the heart of San Sebastián Portuetxe Erretegia offers a wonderful taste of traditional Basque cuisine. The food was excellent, and the experience of tasting the different ciders made it even better. The chuletón (steak) and the cod omelet were definitely the highlights of the night. A great spot to enjoy authentic Basque flavors in a lively, local atmosphere.

Took a bus from the main city centre to get to Portuetxe restaurant for lunch. It was a rainy day so the restaurant was a little quiet but nothing wrong with that. The grill outside smelt amazing. We ordered the grilled hake and steak. The fish was grilled to perfection. Very soft and moist. The fried garlic chips were a nice touch too. The steak was also grilled to perfection. Might look a little too pink for some people but that was perfect as it was still sort of resting as we made our way through the meal.

We came with high expectations after reading glowing press reviews about the txuleton, and we have to say—it truly delivered. The beef was incredibly tender, perfectly cooked, and packed with flavour. Exactly what we were looking for. The sides (chips, green salad, and piquillo peppers) were fine, though nothing remarkable. The wine list is extensive, with fair prices for the quality on offer. The real letdown was dessert. We were hoping for a classic Basque cheesecake—something like the one at La Viña—but what we got was completely different. It still tasted good, just not what we expected. Service was average. The waitress showed up only a few times and never checked in on us. That might be acceptable at a casual spot, but when you’re spending around €75 per person, you’d expect a bit more attention. Overall, the food—especially the txuleton—makes it worth a visit, but there’s room for improvement in the overall dining experience.

The food is very fresh and simple but delicious. We were 8 adults and 2 kids, enjoying the food the waiters were a bit impatient, some of us felt like they were being not so polite

The restaurant is a 10-15 minute drive from the La Concha area and also easily assessable by public transit. The restaurant is located in a cellar and has an interesting vibe. The service is great and the food is good. A great option if you're looking for an upscale experience. Restaurant is very popular so probably best to make a reservation in advance, especially if it's the weekend or a holiday.
