I’ve heard great things about Portugalia for years and I’m glad I finally made the trek down from Boston to see what all the fuss is about. This market has the best selection of Portuguese food and drink around, from tinned fish to salt cod to fresh cheeses and sausages to beer and a truly outstanding wine selection. Staff are all friendly and knowledgeable, mirroring the dedication of the Benevides family (who have owned the store in different iterations since the 80s) to offer a beautifully curated taste of Portugal in Massachusetts. I found myself buying much more than I intended when I walked in, but fortunately prices for most items are quite reasonable. The only downside to visiting on a Saturday afternoon was that parking is limited and fills up quickly. Be sure to pick up some freshly baked bread and hot foods on your way out- the bacalhau à gomes de sá (casserole of salt cod, potatoes, eggs, olives, and onion) and dobrada (white beans stewed with beef tripe) are particular standouts!

Google
What a beautiful store! Clean, open, organized and beautiful displays. Everything from tinned fish to sweet treats. Fresh baked bread, olives & peppers, condiments, pottery, crockery, and ceramics, dried beans, nuts and seeds. Chocolate, salted dried codfish, beer and wine. Deli meat and cured sausages. Even cookbooks. A true culinary delight awaits you behind these doors! We will be back. Thank you 🙏

This is amazing market place with variety of imported items which you can’t find it anywhere. All their fresh made food also great. I got their authentic blood sausage with onion and it is really good.

Love! Love! Love! Wish I had more time to shop here, but I will definitely be back! Bought some ready-made food to go....a little on the dry side, but it was the last of the pan:( Rice pudding was excellent!! I've met Maria Lawton and have her cookbook and been to her presentation they sell her book too! Next time I will go earlier in the day!!

Not impressed with this marketplace. One of our family friends is from Europe and told us this place is a must try and I see it all over social media, but it’s not nearly as good as the hype. Luckily, there was a wine/liquor sampling. If it wasn’t for this, it would have been a waste of time. The market is way smaller than I thought and the food selection is underwhelming. There should be way more pastries and other foods you can eat there. The only food I ended up getting was from the cafe in the corner. I bought a Slice of carrot cake for $5 but I have to say it was delicious! Very moist and the frosting was excellent. The espresso ($1.50) was too watery, much better overseas. Their wine selection was pretty good and there was a good amount of poor wines around $10. The pastel de nata’s did not look appetizing and seemed dull in color. Most of the prices are just completely inflated. Hard to find items that are priced correctly.

What a beautiful market filled with foods, drinks and wares from Portugal! They have a hot food bar as well as a coffee shop serving sandwiches and baked goods with seating inside as well as an outdoor patio.

Google
Amazing store/experience! Start your shopping with a coffee and treat then check out the wine area, order hot food, get your fix on high quality pantry, seafood and meat products! And for gift giving check out all of the beautiful Portuguese ceramics and housewares! Portugalia has become a destination in itself and inspires you to book your next trip to Portugal! The owner and staff are so knowledgeable and more than happy to answer any questions! 😃

Google
Viva Portugal. Just the right place if you miss portugal. Little cafe inside for a quick galao and pastry. All my favorite wines, seafood and cheese. Really enjoy the wine tastings on Saturday. With discounts on cases of wine and discussions about the regions from which the wine originated from.

Jonathan C.

Yelp
I didn't get his name, but the gentleman in the wine section was quite knowledgeable and friendly. Incredible selection of sardines! Got a St Jorge cheese sampler: 4 different ages for $8.99. I was a happy man. I also visited the cafe and had an iced coffee with coconut cake. Awesome! Great visit!

Yelp
I have only seen this place once but they are a fantastic resource for this foodie's daily life. I'm talking about Portugalia Marketplace, located in Fall River, Massachusetts, in a sprawling remodeled old textile mill, is a premier specialty Portuguese food grocer that offers a wide variety of high-quality products, including conservas (tinned fish), olive oil, salt cod, cured meats, and cheeses, and so much more . I've only been here once but I shop there regularly.  The marketplace first started as a small family business operating out of a garage 35 years ago and has since grown into a cultural institution in Fall River, reaching a much larger audience and bringing authentic Portuguese products to Massachusetts, and thanks to FedEx to me here in the Gulf Coast.  My wife, who is Portuguese, was born and raised in Fall River, and my kids were born there too, and we all love and miss the cuisine. Fortunately they offers flat-rate ground shipping for qualifying perishable online orders over a certain amount, making it accessible for customers across the US, which is a beautiful thing for those of us who miss the good stuff we're used to after moving away. The packing is the very best I've ever experienced with cool packs, vacuum sealing, lots of peanuts and general care, very cool!! Portugalia Marketplace boasts an impressive online presence, with an easy-to-navigate website that allows customers to browse and purchase a range of products from the comfort of their homes. Customers can choose from various categories, such as cheese, seafood, groceries, and even prepared meals. Also impressive is the largest selection of Portuguese wines and spirits in the US, with more than 1,300 options, and growing.  In addition to its online store, they're also known for the in-store experience, where customers can immerse themselves in the sights and smells of a European-style market. The store's soaring ceilings, brick archways, and endless barrels, stands, and aisles of beautiful, familiar and unfamiliar foods have made it a beloved destination for locals and tourists alike. Bottom line:  Portugalia Marketplace is more than just a store; it's a cultural institution that has been bringing the best of Portuguese cuisine to Massachusetts for over three decades. With its extensive selection of high-quality products, both in-store and online, it's no wonder that it has become a go-to destination for those seeking a taste of Portugal. https://portugaliamarketplace.com/ https://www.facebook.com/portugaliamarketplace/

Yelp
Love Portuguese food and drink? This is a MUST if you're near Fall River, MA. Many products are imported and priced extremely well. My favorites here are the vast wine and liquor collection. Their staff is very familiar with them and can go on and on about their products and which ones will match what you're looking for. Ask them for assistance, and you won't regret it. We've bought wine, port, liquors, and cases of wine. Loved them all! Some have QR codes, so you can research easily. Like sardines? It's likely 50 different varieties, if not more. Salted fish? They've got a huge selection and will help you cut it and wrap it. Baked goods? Prepared foods? Frozen seafood? Got it. They've got a cafe and art store, too. There is so much fun shopping here! Free private parking lot.

Yelp
What a cute shop! I wasn't sure if this would be more of a grocery store or a specialty food store, but it was somewhere in between. They have an amazing selection of Portuguese delicacies, including meats and cheeses and the staff is super knowledgeable. The selection of sardines is insane! I also loved the dry goods area, which had lots of dried fruits and nuts. This isn't the type of place you'd visit for your everyday grocery needs. I was hoping to find some more vegetables, but their selection is pretty small. A cool spot to check out if you're looking for something different!

Yelp
I first learned of this place from the review written by Barrett O, whose wife is of Portuguese extraction. When Alan and I were in Lisbon we were introduced to the egg tarts and were totally smitten. We even attended a cooking lesson onboard our Douro River cruise, but no way was I going to make them. I tried one from a local bakery that's well regarded but wasn't impressed. So I bookmarked Portugalia Marketplace after reading Barrett's review and when I felt like the freezer had room I placed an order. The cost was about $40 for a dozen little tarts. Shipping was jaw dropping, almost $60, but since I was going to do this only once I figured WTF and ordered. It was sent frozen, w/ ice packs, etc, from New England, so it had to go across the country. It was delivered yesterday by FedEx which, unlike the delivery company used by BevMo, put the package on the front porch. It was heavy because of all the packing materials, but light enough for me to manage. I brought it to the kitchen and opened the box. The paper inside was wet and some of the tarts had thawed, which the company had cautioned might happen. I put the containers of tarts in the freezer and will cook one when I'm in the mood. These will last me a long, long time and I look forward to them.

Yelp
We stopped off at Portugalia Marketplace to try some of their cooked food offerings to go, They also have some sort of cafe; however, I did not check out what they serve there. This place is usually packed, so that should tell you something! They have a marketplace, huge wine selection, and hot food to go. We started with the Portuguese soup, which was hot and delicious. These guys know their stuff! It tasted homemade! Soaked up the juice with a fresh made pop roll. This would be the perfect lunch just by itself! I went with the octopus plate, because it is impossible to find these days! It was served with potatoes, and was so tender and delicious. I am guessing it was some sort of wine based stew. My wife had the shrimp Mozambique, and I will say that it is the best that I have ever had! I would definitely have to order that the next time! This is a clean, fun marketplace. If you haven't checked it out yet, give them a try today!

Yelp
Wow. The place is fantastic. Different types of Bacalhau has it's own temp and humidity controlled room. Freshly prepared Pastéis de Bacalhau were fabulous. Cheeses were great. Portuguese Bread was authentic. Chouriço and Linguiça are to be expected here. But Alheira and Farinheira sausages, which are somewhat obscure, are stocked as well. For cooking hardware they have the crowd pleasing Assador de Barro which is an alcohol fueled ceramic gratin dish that you cook your sausages on. Keep a glass of water nearby in case of fire. wine there is lots of wine

Jennifer M.

Yelp
Absolutely love this place! They always have exactly what you are looking for! Stocked with wines, cheese, seafood, oils, EVERYTHING Portuguese and so much more! They also have a cafe and a counter where you can get meals to go. Everything is so DELICIOUS!! We went to grab lunch to take home over the weekend. I had the Shrimp Mozambique plate and some Portuguese Soup! So, so good!

Pat B.

Yelp
This old textile mill where my own mother actually worked many years ago was bought by a man who came over to Fall River from Portugal. It was well thought out and I'd consider it a gem. I met my sister there yesterday to do some shopping and grab a drink and bite to eat in their cafe. This cappuccino was smooth and delicious and I want another one now!!!! Check this business out.

Kelli T.

Yelp
We went to Portugalia Marketplace midweek to avoid a Saturday crowd and so glad we did! We were able to leisurely walk around the market taking in all of what they have to offer. Such a great market! The store is designed to be comfortable for shoppers which includes a great cafe to enjoy lunch. From fresh deli meat to a great bottle of wine, they have it all. We will definitely return!

Yelp
I've never been to Portugal but now I've been close... This large establishment is fantastic if you want to sample Portuguese specialties! I arrived straight from the Boston airport as this was our first destination! We needed some sandwich fixings for dinner, snacks and picnics for the week! Why not try something we've never had before?! The staff and shoppers were almost all Portuguese and happy to help me. We got chorizo and salpicao as recommended by a kind shopper. Add some Portuguese cheese and then on to the bread! Garlic baguettes! Fruit and nut bread! Cinnamon bread! Coconut bread! These were the four I selected but they had more! I had to get custard tarts because another lady said she always enjoys them in Portugal! I have to agree! They were incredibly flakey and delicious! A few veggies and some mayo and we are set! We ate sandwiches last night and enjoyed the new flavors! Before I left, I saw they had a coffee shop inside so I got us a quadruple espresso and a quadruple latte. Both were delicious! Throw in two small chorizo and cheese pressed sandwiches on Portuguese bread and we ready for the rest of the road trip! The sandwiches were hot, crunchy and tasty! One more thing. They have an entire room full of Portuguese dish ware. It was very interesting and fun to check out. I'm glad nobody staffed that room as I might have bought us new place settings! Life is great with Portuguese delicacies!

Jacqueline C.

Yelp
Great place to purchase Portuguese spices, drinks and etc... it's amazing fresh food and condiments.

Michele M.

Yelp
I was looking for a specific item in the Artigos portion of this market. Household items, bath items, etc. I called to check product availability and was helped by Colleen. She is a gem! Not only did she sort it out before my drive, she helped me while I was there. In the past I've shopped for food and even got a prepared meal. All excellent. This trip was to complete the set up for my outdoor entertainment deck. It will be spectacular! A special shout out to Colleen R TYSM

Chris M.

Yelp
If you are looking for anything Portuguese, look no further. This place has everything. There is a room especially just for salted cod. I stocked up because we made a special trip just to visit this grocery store. It also has every type of sausage imaginable. Two thumbs up as a Portuguese grocery store.

Doug L.

Yelp
Excellent selection of Portuguese foods, wine and port, groceries, cheese, seafood, and more. Couldn't ask for a better array of choices... now it's hard to choose which ones to take home.

Nelson B.

Yelp
I've been meaning to go to this place for years and wish I went earlier! I grew up in a Portuguese community and always went to smaller places I grew up that bought items from this place. The selection is huge and you can easily spend $100 to $200, if you're stocking up. The staff is friendly and the atmosphere is great. They have a little coffee shop inside that has pastries and sandwiches that you should definitely check out. Everything here is authentic!

Paul C.

Yelp
A part of beautiful Portugal transported to Fall River l Many excellent authentic Portuguese products with the largest selection of Portuguese wines available on this side of the Atlantic. Enjoy delicious national foods prepared by friendly, knowledgable people. A gem!

Arthur S.

Yelp
Super clean market with plenty of Portuguese delicacies to choose from. They have wine, sardines, port wine (basic to 40+ years), prepared foods, cheeses, seafood, octopus, oil olives, etc. They also have a great selection of Portuguese Terra Cotta cookware. Great place to stop into if you are in Fall River or passing through the area.

Doc L.

Yelp
Outstanding variety of Portugese products!! Their prepared foods are delicious! The service is consistently adequate. The atmosphere is clean, well kept, and well lit. This is a great place to shop!!

Steve K.

Yelp
Visited 7/14/21 If your looking for every type of canned sardines in God's creation, this is the place for you. The variety of Portuguese products that this store carries is incredible. They have a large variety of Portuguese baked goods, delicious looking breads, and cookies (I bought some), a deli with assorted smoked meats, and cooked foods to take home. They have a giant room devoted solely to salt cod (Bacalao or Bacalhoada, Portuguese salt cod stew is one of my favorite dinners ). They have open barrels of fava beans, spices, and different legumes, if your lucky one of the beautiful young women that work there will help you bag your items from this display.

Alex C.

Yelp
Such a cool place to stroll around. There is an huge selection of meats and seafood, a diverse alcohol selection, produce, crafts and a cafe! There was a wine tasting that was very informative and the pastel de natas were delicious. Incredibly clean and everyone there was very nice.

Tim B.

Yelp
The best selection of Portuguese food, wine, liquor and wares you will face and and the salt cod room is practically a tourist attraction.

Mya M.

Yelp
I live in NYC which is supposed to be the land of being able to find every food under the sun. Not so when it comes to good sardines. I'm happily swimming in fish oil after a delivery from Portgalia arrived in what seemed like less than 24 hours. They have an extensive selection of many many brands and flavors of the canned fish I've been craving after spending time in the country. Portugalia, if you make a sardine subscription box, I will join!

Lia M.

Yelp
As a self-proclaimed Lusophile, I was thrilled to visit Portugalia. Prior to visiting, I'd had a great online ordering experience in 2020, when I ordered my beloved Saloio and Sumol. And I'd also had a fantastic email experience with Michael, who looked into whether they carried/could carry my all-time favorite wine (Quintas das Arcas Conde Villar Vinho Verde Rose). They don't/can't, but he researched that for me and I was so, so appreciative. Portugalia carries the important things--wine, port, bread, cheese, olives, olive oil, bacalhau, textiles/ceramics--along with other Portuguese sundries and a small produce section. The wine section is impressive, but so is the dedicated bacalhau room. They didn't have the queijo Sao Bento (ovelha curado) I wanted, but the cheese I did get was good. The bread was fantastic, but I forgot to look for queijadas. The service in the wine section was superb. And I love that the aisle endcaps are decorated in azulejos. Picked up some conservas for my father, which he loved, and I can't wait to try my wine. This large market has plenty of parking, which is great, and was busy on a late Saturday morning. I'm easily overwhelmed so didn't browse as much as I wanted, but am looking forward to a return trip where I can spend way more time browsing.

Rozet S.

Yelp
Such an awesome marketplace in Fall River! We had breakfast at the cafe and ordered coffees, pasteis de nata (amazing! Just like the ones I had in Lisbon!), strawberry cheesecake (delicious!), and a chourico sandwich (amazing and flavorful!) They also have ready-made-food you can get at the deli.

Tim M.

Yelp
I don't think I've ever met so many friendly people in a store before. Everyone was really nice. We visited Lisbon and I ordered some stuff online. When my wife realized we could drive there (we live in NH) we decided to go. We got a few sandwiches for lunch (try the chourico pate), which were fantastic. Enjoying an after lunch pastel de nata had me remembering Lisbon. After lunch we shopped - it's not a big store but they have a LOT packed in there! We tasted some wine and bought a few bottles. When we got home we realized one of the wines we liked came from a winery we actually visited while we were in Portugal! I ducked into the room with all the salt cod, which was really neat. The employee behind the counter was really knowledgable and approachable. The sweet bread and bolos are to die for. The bolos are so soft and tender - they're unlike anything you get from a regular grocery store. Even the cashiers and sackers were super nice. Usually I feel like I'm lucky to get a hello, but everyone was chatting up the customers like they were old friends. I don't know how they do this but the people running this store should train bigger chains on customer experience. I highly recommend a visit - it's worth a journey.

James K.

Yelp
This is the local & charming Portuguese version of Whole Foods in the Fall River area! Check it out! They have hot food that they sell in the back that is pretty good too!

Michelle C.

Yelp
Great selection but certainly overpriced compared to the other Portuguese markets in the area.

Melissa L.

Yelp
Such a cute grocery store and the pastries from the bakery are so good. Everything was well-made they have a variety of stuff in the grocery store that I've never seen anywhere else. It's clean and everyone is friendly. Will definitely have to go back again.

Lady B.

Yelp
A very nice concept, but everything is incredibly overpriced. Oddly, every single staff member we interacted with looked and responded with very sad vibes.

Charlotte H.

Yelp
I love coming here whenever we come stay with my in-laws. Amazing Portuguese wine selection (and port) delicious fresh pastries and great prices on premium olive oil. Staff is very helpful and knowledgeable.

George S.

Yelp
Hands down the most authentic Portuguese market outside of Portugal. Their selection of olive oils and wine as well as sardines is remarkable. They have entire room devoted to salted fish and a deli that make ready to eat food. Also, they have a small boutique store with many beautiful product from Portugal. I go there every week to by my olives and sardines.

John S.

Yelp
Great place if you want one-stop shopping for Portuguese products. Arroz Doce Bacalao Croquettes, Bean Soup

Deborah S.

Yelp
Love this place. Best kept secret for Portuguese wine. Staff is always friendly. Brings me back to when I was a child. ~D

Yelp
great place to get anything and everything Portuguese! Amazon placeand great atmosphere!

Yelp
A bustling establishment with the most amazing selection of tinned fish! Helpful employees for buying bulk items and such a fun energetic environment.

Rita V.

Yelp
LOVE, LOVE, L OOOOOOOOOVVVVVVVEEEEEE this place! I couldn't make it when the Culinary Guild made its day trip (pre-Covid), but we did an early morning day trip on a lazy weekend. An HOUR and some change, no traffic, coming from Hudson, MA. The market is very european-style and super clean, easy to navigate and full of color and aromas of salted cod and fried tidbits of deliciousness. Needless to say I stocked up on the beautifully wrapped sardines, packed up on Portuguese sausages, and dark chocolates made in Portugal and feasted on bacalao croquettes and shrimp turnovers (DO NOT MISS THOSE!!! THEY ARE DELICIOUS!). I didn't have enough room for the pastel de Belem that had just come out, but I am saving for my next trip. And yes, I did pick up olive oil and octopus and hams, and chorizo, and beans... But the highlight of the trip was Andre, who gave us a tour of Duoro ports, and we picked up a few that KNOCKED OUR SOCKS OFF. What a great wine and spirits guru. Definitely must go back to the shrine and have the master lead us in the ode to grapes and everything else! Great pricing and a beautiful selection of spirits and Portuguese, Spanish and other wines. What a beautiful market. It brought us back to our vacation in Lisbon and all the things we loved about Portugal and its people.

Cathy Z.

Yelp
Fall River is known for having a large Portuguese population and this marketplace is a product of that! The concept is basically similar to Eataly--with groceries, specialty products, knick knacks, and prepared foods all under one roof--although of course a bit smaller in scale. If you're looking for olive oil, salt cod, octopus, pastéis de nata, or any other Portuguese specialties, this is definitely the place to be! In addition to the Portuguese specialties, they also sell general European products like Haribo candy. The frozen section is also worth a visit, with lots of unique items that you can bake up yourself. I scored some frozen açaí for a good price. The beer, wine, and liquor selection is absolutely massive. Honestly this seems more like a liquor store than a grocery store. In addition to Portuguese wines sorted by location, they also offer all your typical liquors and beers that you would find anywhere. I picked up a red wine and a rosé, both around $8-10. This would be a great place to come if you're into wines and looking to try something new. Unfortunately the bulk nuts and olives were a bit limited due to COVID but I'm sure this would be an even better shopping experience when everything opens back up again!

Patty M.

Yelp
Portugalia is a great market with a wide variety of Portuguese food and products. Whole place is very clean and staff very helpful.

Lawson S.

Yelp
Excellent selection of Portuguese food and related products, especially wine.

Rose M.

Yelp
I could spend all day here and buy the whole store. I love all the imported items and I always can pick up the cutest gift ideas!!

João P.

Yelp
If you want to find a taste of Portugal, this is one of the best places for a one stop shop! Prices can somewhat be outrages on certain items where you can find at other places for cheaper, I.e. a bakery or corner store, but not super crazy different.

Richard W.

Yelp
Impressive market. Clean with helpful staff. I was blow away by the selection of products, from octopus to Bacalhau, breads and dry goods. The closest thing to a trip to Portugal.

Jennifer H.

Yelp
This place is amazing if your Portuguese or love Mediterranean type food. I have never seen so many choices of sardines. The also have a wide selection of loose leaf tea from the Azores which is amazing. The chestnuts looked great and they have huge selection of nuts and alcohol. If your looking for some amazing salted cod this is the place for you. They have a nice little bakery , deli with amazing meats and A coffee shop. They also cooked Portuguese food. Great selection of Portuguese pottery and other cookware. I bought this great cookbook on Azorean cooking..

Nicole L.

Yelp
This was a great find on random search of the area! When we saw it was featured in Saveur magazine we knew it would be worth visiting, it was a short drive from the wonderful bakery we had breakfast. It was a spacious warehouse size store. There was soooo much to see and get authentic Portuguese products. It was the beginning of our Maine trip and we were already got so much interesting products. Ranging from some very nice quality Portuguese rose for $6.99 to a pink gin to canned octopus and sardines etc. What was really impressive was the bacalao room, it was a massive array of dried bacalao I have not seen anything like this here in the US. It didnt smell at all from the outside but the inside had a stronger smell. The frozen whole octopuses in the freezer section. The array of chorizos, I followed a man who ordered one that was $6.99 vs the $4.99 one, he gestured it was a better one! I believes him! LOL it turned out to be excellent, whole chunks of meat in the sausages. There was also a cooked food section where we could get stewed octopus. There was a section of apparels and homeware of Portuguese design, beautifully designed products including some porcelain and fine china that were priced at $1000-1500!! We also met with the friendly owner he gave us his business card to order direct and recommended some local places to try!! Lovely friendly experience at Fall River.

Kay L.

Yelp
Very clean marketplace authentic Portuguese foods. We tried the hot food Portuguese steak it was very good would definitely recommend this market.

Mark S.

Yelp
Absolutely loved this place. I was in town for something else and had no intention of coming here. Going to the grocery store without a plan is always a bad idea. They have so much stuff here. Awesome wine selection, everything was priced very well. I got some Portuguese cheese, sweet bread, chouricio, thinly sliced chorizo, and Portuguese olive oil. I definitely have to come back and spend more time here because there are lots of unique, hard to find items. It's worth the trip, check it out!
