Under-the-Radar Restaurants to Check Out in Los Angeles | Eater LA

"This San Gabriel noodle shop's signature potato starch noodle soup comes with seaweed, bok choy, and bean curd in a savory-spicy broth, with optional add-ins like lamb, beef, and cuttlefish balls for a small upcharge." - Cathy Chaplin

Google
Very nice small restaurant selling specialty noodles and some side items. The potato noodles have a firmer texture, kinda like soba, the soup was delicious. Chicken bone was also very good. There was an old couple working there, very friendly. Price was reasonable, highest it goes was $13 for the house special noodle. Overall a great place to try something new and unique.

Google
Got the original potato noodles with handmade meatballs. The potato noodles tasted unique, different from regular noodles. But I think I prefer regular noodles since the potato noodles are way chewier. The meatballs were not that good either. The only good thing was the soup. It had good flavor and tasted good. The portion is decent but not many veggies. I probably would not come back but recommend it if you want to try something different.

Whaaaaa! This cozy, family-run spot is it! I'm hooked on potato noodle soup now and inviting all friends to check it out. The bounciest, chewiest noodles I've ever had, served up piping hot in a large, delicious broth. Yum yum 😋🤤

Google
It was my first time to eat here. My sister recommended their chicken rack. It was so delicious that I couldn’t stop eating it. The potato noodles were also delicious and I ate them all.

Google
Authentic and huge portions for the price, had a great time and hope to be back.

Google
Good food for the price. Typical Chinese style restaurant where you scan the QR code and order. Staff was very polite.

Google
First time had potato noodle which is good . And with a lot of vegetables. Good to try.

Google
Good portions, great chewy potato noodles. We got no spicy in our soup as well as the mild spicy. I could see myself ordering the no spicy on a sick day. The chicken side dish was really good too. I’ll be back again.

Yelp
Good noodles, if you like Chinese food-- you must be try. To be honest, the main customers of this restaurant are Chinese people living in the United States, which explains why they have little comments on Yelp. Because they use other Chinese takeaway software. If you want to try this restaurant, then you should really try it! This is the authentic Chinese taste.

Yelp
This spot is low-key hidden in San Gabriel Valley, They only serve five things, but every single one hits. You have to get the potato noodles. they're super bouncy, elastic, kinda chewy in a way that's actually fun to eat. Way better texture than regular noodles. broth is flavorful, and it doesn't make you crazy thirsty after, so I'm guessing they don't load it up with fake seasoning. Just clean, solid flavor. Also, do not skip the chicken breast -- the street-style fried kind (街边炸鸡柳). The seasoning is special ! Crispy outside, juicy inside, exactly how it should be. Try the grilled chicken bones. Yeah, actual bones with some meat on them. I was skeptical too, but they're packed with flavor and weirdly addictive. Service is good, friendly , place not big , but super clean , an interesting place for small groups to grab some quick food

Yelp
Parking is located inside the building which you can access from the side or you can park on the street. The price of this place is phenomenal and the portions is huge. I love how much comes in the bowl and that you could add more things for extra if you'd like. I think the included ingredients are already very tasty. I feel like Chinese restaurants always do different styles of the same dishes but the wood ear mushrooms here are packed with flavor. I got the potato noodles with seafood and I enjoyed how chewy the noodles were and all the ingredients. They have Chinese TV in the background that has English subtitles so if you're curious you can tune in and read. I will definitely come back again!

Yelp
Located in a two story parking structure, this restaurant can be easily missed. There is plenty of parking. It can get dark with some dim lighting especially in the stairwell. The restaurant itself is small with only 4-5 small tables and a few counter seats. Ambiance was good with Chinese music playing from the TV. There appears to only be two employees. A guy took our order pretty quickly. There isn't much on the menu. We got the special homemade potato vermicelli ($13) with the homemade meatballs. You can choose the spice level. It was in a big ceramic pot and you can tell it was freshly boiled cause you can still see the soup bubbling. The noodles are super chewy. The meatballs were disappointing with questionable texture. The frozen ones taste better than theirs. It comes with a big portion of noodles, some enoki mushrooms, bokchoy, black fungus, seaweed, and tofu skin. The broth was super clear but also savory.

Yelp
I've had my eye on JCHF Potato Noodles for a while, so I finally decided to check it out. I went for dinner, and the place was pretty packed, but luckily, they had bar seating--perfect for a solo diner like me. I ordered the potato noodles, which come with some standard toppings, but I added meat and spam to mine. I also got the QQ chicken bones that everyone seems to rave about, and the fusun spicy mix (not knowing what it was). The fusun spicy mix was an interesting combo of veggies in a sauce that was sweet, salty, spicy, and sour all at once. The QQ chicken bones were like fried chicken with bones still in--it was sweeter than savory, and I wasn't sure if I was supposed to eat the bones or not. I'm not sure why it's so hyped; maybe some people just like gnawing on bones? The potato noodles came in a huge pot with a generous portion. The broth was a bit mild, but the noodles were definitely the highlight--bouncy and chewy, just right. Overall, it was a good experience. I enjoyed most of it, but if I came back, I'd probably just stick with the potato noodles. The other dishes weren't really my thing, but the noodles were excellent.

Yelp
absolute must try. local family owned business. amazing service , soup is 10/10 , huge portion of quality soup. fair price. the environment is very relaxing , private. not many other places you can go relax , get a huge bowl of good tasting soup for a fair price they also have a refreshing complimentary tea must try. 10/10 10/10 10/10.

Yelp
Came here on a whim after dropping my car off for an alignment. We shared a potato noodle and the fried chicken bones. The noodles were well priced and was pretty decently sized. It was our first time trying potato noodles. The texture was interesting, but quite tasty. Good chewiness to it. We got mild spice and was a lil spicier than most other mild places. Nose was running a little. The fried chicken was meh. I think a lot of people order it, but it wasn't our thing. It was on the sweet side, which I don't prefer my fried chicken to be. Also it was way too bony and hard to eat. But for me, it was the taste. Did not like the taste. Maybe that's how northern chinese people like. Would not get again. Tried eating it but ended up tossing the rest of it. Couldn't force myself to eat it. Would come back for noodles, but not the chicken.

Yelp
Ya'll, this little shop is so good! I found this place on Yelp a while ago but due to very little reviews, never tried it. Today I was feeling adventurous and decided to stop by and it was the best decision ever! I thought it was going to be a smol shop with little to no customers but to my surprise this place was PACKED for lunch on a Wednesday. I ordered the special handmade potato vermicelli with meatballs, mild spicy. Portion is generous - I filled four bowls of noodle and soup. Potato noodles were delightfully chewy and delicious. I found the mild to be pretty spicy haha. Everyone around me also ordered the qq chicken bones and it smelled amazing! You do have go wait a bit for your noodles - I waited about 20-25 minutes. Super small shop, located in a structure that has plenty of parking. Same structure as Edible Arrangements!

Yelp
Generous portions and delicious flavors. The noodles tasted very fresh and black fungus is packed with flavor.

Yelp
JCHF Potato Noodle is a solid spot for noodles in San Gabriel and they have phenomenal fried chicken! I never had potato noodles before and was interested to try when recommended to come here by a friend, I was definitely not disappointed! The noodles are very different from wheat noodles and they are very soft and "QQ". This did make it a bit difficult to eat as I either had to take big mouthfuls or try to bite off the noodles which took a bit of effort but it was definitely worth it! The toppings that come with it are solid too, I liked the tofu skin, bok choy, and bit of seaweed! I didn't really like the meatball though and would recommend the fish balls instead. However, the main attraction was the fried chicken which was absolutely delicious! It has a really nice fry to it as it's crispy but flavorful and really supported the sweet soy taste it had! Definitely try the fried chicken if you go! The service wasn't too bad, it's a small restaurant and there aren't many workers which makes service slower than other large restaurants. We also ended up waiting around 30-40 minutes for a table since they only had around 6 that were all full and around 25-30 minutes for our food plus an additional 15 for the fried chicken to come out. Honestly wasn't even that bad of a wait but just something to keep in mind. The restaurant itself was small like I mentioned before and only has around 6 tables to sit at so it does feel a bit tight. They also have a small bar seating area too for solo diners but I'm not sure it gets used much since nobody was on it when we were there. Overall, I'd say to give JCHF Potato Noodle a try and definitely try the fried chicken, you won't regret it!

Yelp
The noodles are very fresh , the soup is very tasty. I would like to eat there more often.

Yelp
Like others said, this place is in a sketchy plaza, but everything changes once you enter the store. You are greeted by the warm and cozy feeling of a small restaurant with nice decor and happy people. I went in around 6:20PM and had to wait a good 30mins before being seated, even though there were empty tables. I ordered a a potato noodle bowl, shenyang QQ chicken, and a what gluten noodle. You are able to somewhat customize the noodle bowl with toppings and spice levels. The noodles are sooo chewy, but the broth was one dimensional. The toppings and noodles are also plentiful, but I don't recall there being any protein in the base order I ordered. The Shenyang QQ chicken was definitely the star of the show due to its flavor, albeit the meat quantity was small due to the amount of bones. For your protein fix, I recommend ordering this dish, as it adds a different flavor and texture. Service attitude could've been better, as our server appeared rude when seating and taking our order. They were dismissive and after every item, kept saying "and then what" in Chinese. Overall though, given the limited choices of potato noodles, this place is a decently priced and portioned spot to go to if you're ever craving that texture.

Yelp
I've been waiting for ages for potato noodles to make its way to SGV, so I was incredibly excited to try JCHF. Note that the menu is very limited. It's a small shop that is evidently family owned and run by women (from what I could tell). I ordered a steamy bowl of potato noodle with all toppings. For $13, the portion was quite large, but I do wish there were more toppings. The house made noodles are satisfyingly chewy. I would have preferred soup a bolder soup with more depth, as it was kind of one dimensional. However, adding black vinegar helped elevate the dish a bit more to a hot and sour type flavor. WARNING: they do not accept credit cards; only cash, zelle, and Venmo All in all, I'm glad there is a dedicated potato noodle shop in SGV, but would only recommend to those who are partial to the northern Chinese palate.

Yelp
100% recommend this place. Ordered: -Potato Noodle -Fried Chicken Pro: -Potato noodle was really good. Chewy and savory. We got the seafood meatballs but they also have a beef one. The broth was spicy and not too heavy tasting. -The chicken was savory sweet, a bit sticky and a delight to eat! There are a lot of bones and the meat is slightly chewy which makes a pleasant texture. -Interior was clean, bright and cute -Plenty of parking inside the structure -Price is reasonable Con: -No credit card payment under $30

Yelp
Stopped by here after the San Gabriel Christmas festival and it was a good remedy for a chilly day. The noodles are VERY chewy, more than udon - which was a little much for me. I did like the tomato broth! Service was regular, I believe they had an English speaking staff person since I don't speak Chinese!

Yelp
OMG what a find! Looks like this place quietly opened in San Gabriel. When I saw this place on yelp, I was just hungry and wanted noodles and thought this looks interesting. I ordered the first item on the menu and did not have any expectations. When the bowl came out, it was bubbling. The noodles are chewy and its mixed with long dried tofu strips and dried kelp. The broth is similar to the spicy mala broth in hot pot. It has texture and flavor. So delicious! YUM! Their menu is really small and their staff speaks Chinese and a little English. Free parking in parking lot.

Yelp
Gas, hidden gem in my opinion. Their chicken bones is delicious. This side with a bowl of noodles is good enough for two people to be honest. The chicken "bones" which do have a decent amount of meat on it are fried to perfection and you can just chew and swallow the entire thing if you wanted. Very flavorful and worth the price.

Yelp
The food is so authentic and delicious.

Yelp
Their potato noodle and fried chicken are a 10/10! Normally, I get their noodles with only vegetables and tofu skin. The meatballs and lobster balls taste a little funky. Highly recommend adding some vinegar and peppercorn oil to the noodles. It helps to elevate the taste. The environment is not the best but the food made up for it and the lady server is super sweet.

Yelp
Tried JCHF Potato Noodle for the first time today and it was SOOOOOOO GOOD. I'm not saying I'm a hot pot connoisseur but I've eaten at my fair share of hot pot restaurants and this place is top tier!!!!!!!!!! The menu is pretty simple--I got the potato noodles and added beef. The noodles come with preset veggies and ingredients but you can add more that you like!! And OMG the soup is SO deep and flavorful. The ingredients are also super fresh and the potato noodles are especially so chewy and bouncy -drool- loved every bite!!!!! I got it for takeout but I'm really excited to go back and try it in person!!! HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND PLEASE GO PEOPLE!!!

Yelp
This place is off the chain if you're a fan of potato noodles. IYKYK. Hidden in a strip mall with a US Navy recruiting station and a shady AF massage place as its neighbors, you might not expect to find delicious noods here. But once you enter this unassuming place, you can tell they're not playing around. The place was packed on a rainy day with Chinese people (not even Chinese-Americans) so you know it's the real deal. There's one lady running the show and she's absolutely overwhelmed with the amount of product she's offloading between dine-in and delivery, but nonetheless she makes sure you're taken care of and is quite warm. As for the food? It's really good. They make the noodles in house- I repeat IN HOUSE (none of that dried packaged business) and it shows in the texture of the noods. The broth slaps (tailored to your desired spicy level of course) and the portions are decent. Only gripe if I had to pick one is I wish there were some more add-ins, but I guess the main event is the noods after all. There aren't many places that do potato noodles, but this place does it, and does it goddamn well. Well worth a trip.

Yelp
Today was my first time trying potato noodles! There were a lot of flavors and it was spicy. There were also a lot of ingredients in the soup, which made it really savory. It's perfect for cold weather because the broth is warm and appetizing. Next time I'm coming back, I'll try the other dishes.

Yelp
Pretty small noodle restaurant tucked away in a small plaza and side note doesn't take credit cards. One of the only places around the area to get potato noodles that I know of. Started with the Spicy Black Fungus (酸辣小木耳) which was had a sharp sour and numb spicy flavor with a crisp texture. The main star of the show is the Special Handmade Potato Vermicelli (特色手工土豆粉) with handmade meatballs and all the veggies for toppings. The potato noodles had a really chewy noodles texture almost stretchy sitting in a hot and spicy broth. The meatball textures were quite werid and different than any other meatball I've tried before. One thing is that the Hotpot bowl that it comes in made it seem way spicier than it actually way.

Yi L.

Yelp
Luckily, they are able to make their potato doodles vegetarian. I was craving potato noodles for a while and finally had a chance to come here. The mild spicy is right on spot for me and the flavor is exactly what I was looking for. The environment is very cute as well. Friendly staff.

Yelp
The noodles are on point delicious! There's not much dining space available, only couple tables if I remember correctly however the potato noodles were delicious. Very chewy and the soup was very flavorful. Recommend! Especially on a cold day

Mark A.

Yelp
The potato noodle soup is so good! Absolutely fantastic on a cold day. The flavors are reminiscent of Chinese Szechuan flavors and warm you right up. The noodles have a nice bite and portions are huge. Great value.

Pauline S.

Yelp
Delicious authentic Chinese comfort food. Still go every week. Can't get enough of the noodle, soup, and toppings. The best fresh homemade noodles, never mushy. I adjust the spiciness depending on my mood. Very affordable and cheaper than other noodle places across the street.

Stephen N.

Yelp
Man this place is great! The potato noodles are soo chewy and made fresh everyday (i talked to the boss who handmakes it). Way cheaper and tastier than boiling point! I recommend everyone to give it a try!!

Pigeon S.

Yelp
absolutely love potato noodles! Their unique chewy texture and ability to soak up the flavors of any dish they're cooked with make them a delightful addition to my meals. Whether I'm savoring them in a savory stir-fry, a comforting soup, or a refreshing salad, potato noodles add that extra layer of enjoyment to my dining experience. Their versatility and deliciousness have made them a staple in my kitchen, and I'm always excited to explore new recipes that feature these wonderful noodles.

Jenny L.

Yelp
I never had potato noodles prior to this. I found this dish to be absolutely delicious during the cold snap in LA. My only issue with this location is their lack of non-spicy options for young children. Their soup has a significant kick but not overwhelming. The meatballs also had a strange texture that wasn't pleasing to eat. The plaza is a little difficult to get in and out of, but parking inside the plaza is plentiful. Come give it a chance while the cold snap in LA lasts!
