North and South Carolina’s 2025 Eater Award Winners | Eater Carolinas

"Coming out of Hurricane Helene, Potential New Boyfriend owner, Disco, wasn’t sure if he wanted to open his new bar while many Asheville establishments were struggling to reopen, but he was encouraged by the community to unlock the doors to his ice cream/wine/listening bar in West Asheville. Since then, Potential New Boyfriend has become a stop for locals to group and share conversations over masala chai sundaes and scoops of Vietnamese iced coffee ice cream (also earning it the title of “ Best Third Place ” by Eater). The space leans in nostalgia, between the desserts, music, and decor, which provides comfort to those who came of age in the ’90s — but you don’t need to be Gen X or a millennial to appreciate Potential New Boyfriend, you only need to be 21 and over." - Erin Perkins

In 2025, the Best Restaurants Are Bars, Cafes, and Third Places | Eater

"At first, I didn’t know what to expect at Potential New Boyfriend in Asheville, North Carolina: by day the space glows with a riot of pop art and sunlight on a mishmash of couches and midcentury chairs, visits kick off with amuse-bouches, and the wine list—plotted on a New York magazine–style matrix of flavors—skews casual; the food menu, dreamed up by owner Disco and chef Dana Amromin, mostly consists of desserts like earthy tahini cheesecake, masala chai ice cream sundaes, and the popular Dubai chocolate sundae, though the bar only serves customers 21 and over. At night guest DJs spin through high-end speakers, and while Disco envisioned a hi‑fi listening focus, the desserts have proven the main draw; having opened shortly after Hurricane Helene in 2024, the place quickly cemented itself as a community staple even as the team figures out how to balance a living-room–like experience with the practical need to turn tables on busy nights." - Nick Mancall-Bitel

Potential New Boyfriend Serves Ice Cream, Wine, and Music | Eater Carolinas

"Part ice cream shop, wine bar, and listening room, this modern, inclusive hangout hosts record listening parties, sundae desserts, charcuterie boards, and an adventurous bottle and by-the-glass list (no commonplace cabs or chards). Opened toward the end of 2024 by owner Disco, it’s become a locals’ spot—and a find for visitors in the know—where you can safely sink into music, explore new wines, and relax with a scoop of very, very good ice cream. Think the Friends apartment reimagined for today (or early MTV revived): colorful, sumptuous furniture, dramatic art, a top-of-the-line sound system, and an immaculate vinyl collection, with friends gathered on couches and couples sharing bites at the edges. Desserts from chef Dana Amromin (also co-owner of Butter Punk) fuse nostalgia with the new, from a classic tiramisu to a twisted peach tea dessert with lapsang semifreddo, bruléed peach, mimosa gastrique, and honeycomb candy; seasonal sundaes arrive in classic fountainware, like blueberry mint with blueberry compote and lemon cake. Gospel Artisanal Ice Cream flavors are heavily featured—Vietnamese iced coffee, salted chocolate, and Biscoff stracciatella—served as scoops, bruléed, or as affogatos. Savory, snack-y plates include fancy onion dip, a panzanella with heirloom tomatoes, charcuterie boards, and whipped ricotta with roasted beets, chili crisp, and lemon-pepper crackers, and every item (even desserts) comes with a suggested wine pairing. The choose-your-own-adventure drink menu spans wines, vermouths, amaros, and aperitifs—start with a “Porch Pounder” or a “Slow Sipper,” go dry or sweet, herbal or fruity—with helpful staff guidance that makes the experience the opposite of wine snobbery. Pre-game your evening here with something sparkling, head out to dinner, then return for dessert and a digestif." - Erin Perkins

9 Best New Restaurants in Asheville Right Now | Eater Carolinas

"It’s wine, ice cream sundaes (try the Dubai chocolate bar version with chocolate ice cream, chocolate sauce, pistachio ganache, and kataif crunch), tasty treats, small bites, and vinyl spins by the house DJ in an intimate (25 seats) listening room with cozy corners, comfy nooks, and David-Lynch-meets-Wes-Anderson vibe. It’s Potential New Boyfriend, the creative brainstorm of a man named Disco, who introduced himself to Asheville via his handcrafted Gospel Ice Cream that he sold at local tailgate markets. The wine list is supplemented with amaro and vermouth; espresso and ice cream make a wicked good affogato; a recent savory snack was whipped ricotta, pomegranate molasses, and za’atar crackers. Soundtrack, a ticketed monthly event, screens films with iconic soundtracks — popcorn and dessert are included." - Kay West

Google
10/10 experience, very funky and vibey. Grilled cheese was delish and during HH you get a free scoop of ice cream with a glass of wine. Amazing playlist too

I came for the ice cream! When I heard about this place, the ice cream jumped out, although it's also a cool place with wine selections and records being played. I was deciding between sundaes, and loved the way I was helped with my selection - do you feel more like fruity, or creamy? I was in a fruity mood, and got the blueberry mint sundae. The ice cream was unctuous, the mint brightened the blueberries, there was a thick blueberry compote, the small chunks of lemon cake balanced out the flavor and added a different texture, and the dried mint leaf garnish was crispy. Definitely savored this ice cream, a delight for the mouth! There were a few ways you could choose wines - not my thing, but helpful to hone in on what taste you want to go for.

Google
All-around 10/10 experience! The service was incredibly attentive, knowledgeable, accommodating, and kind. Our group ordered a bit of everything - apps, a mocktail, wine, tea, and dessert - and every single thing was phenomenal. The vibes were perfect, the sound immaculate, and the mid-century aesthetic spot on. Easily my new favorite spot!

Google
My new dessert spot for sure! The ambiance of this place was super cute. I lived all the color and couches, which made it very cosy. The desserts was amazing. Had the miso caramel ice cream that was delicious. Not over powering with caramel flavor. Then we had the Millie which was a puffy pastry with lemon cream also very delectable. Service was great! Will be recommending this stop to locals and tourist. I will be back for more treats soon!

Google
This place is super laid back, chill and a great selection of good & drink! The vintage sound system was spectacular along with the choices of music. Must check out!

Google
This is not your typical ice cream shop! Seating is clusters of comfy couches and fabric covered arm chairs. We had ice cream desserts that were very unique and over the top delicious! Service was personal and friendly. They answered our questions with efficiency. Small venue, but overall fabulous!

Google
Talk about attention to detail…. What an impressive place! Amazing food & drink, acoustics, ambience, and even how the menus are layed out. This place is the definition of quality

Google
Visiting from Philadelphia, this was fine. A local recommended it too us, and she was very confident in that recommendation. Nice speaker set up, with a guy playing vinyls all night. Drinks were decent but a little spendy for what they were. No spirits, just wine and vermouth. The deserts looked interesting, but it was a little too pretentious for my liking. Seemed like they are trying to hard to be super hip and cool.

Yelp
My wife and I stopped by for her birthday and we were blown away by the ambience, the friendliness of the staff, and of course the desserts! The coconut tres leches cake paired with the Vietnamese iced coffee ice cream was a magical pairing, we will absolutely be back. They even gave my wife a birthday card, which was a nice touch. 10/10 please check this place out, you won't be sorry.

Yelp
Wow, wow, wow, loved this place! Potential New Boyfriend is a wonderful spot for a snack (sweet or savory) and cocktails, perfect for a small group or date. The interior is lovely and fun: living room style seating, 80's kitsch, old school audio speakers, vinyl spinning in the corner for a throwback vibe. The menu is tightly curated offering charcuterie, sandwiches, desserts and ice creams. Not a full meal type place, a drop and grab a drink and snackies type place. Service is top-notch and patient, they'll walk you through the drink choices and the desserts all have pairing suggestions. Overall it was a fantastic stop for me after dinner across the street. If you're playful and fun, you'll likely love Perfect New Boyfriend. It's probably not for everyone but it was quite perfect for me...

Yelp
PNB is my new favorite place to hang out. It's a hi fi vibey listening studio that serves wine, coffee, tea, and dessert. On Tuesday's you can bring your own vinyl and their DJ will do alllllll the spinning for you! I got the dessert flight and cafe con panna which were incredible. The struggles and blueberry sundae had so much flavor. Already thinking about our next visit!

Yelp
I've been following them on IG for awhile now and excited to visit this place on the next trip to AVL. I finally got to check it out this week. We arrived on Tuesday at 5pm. There were only a couple other people here so we had our pick of the seats. We found a comfy couch with a low table and were greeted immediately. Our server was pleasant and explained the menu thoroughly to us. It's divided between regular wines, and then there's a side dedicated to more adventurous and unique offerings. These are generally smaller and stronger pours. They also specialize in desserts - ice cream primarily but also some other cakes and confections. Much as I wanted to indulge in the dessert, we were there just for a pre-dinner drink, but next time I will get the ice cream! Our server let us sample a couple before committing to a glass. I tried the standard bubbles and enjoyed that tasting, so I got a full pour of that. My partner got something a little more exotic but it was interesting and tasty. We really enjoyed our visit here - it's super bright and vibrantly decorated - pops of color everywhere. And it's a listening lounge, so you can see all of the high end audio equipment, speakers, etc seamlessly placed throughout the space. The atmosphere is perfect for relaxing, catching up, and everything in between. Price wise, it's fair for the quality of the service and product. I can't wait to go back! @azfitfoodfun

Yelp
Loved this. It's super cute inside, they were spinning vinyl, and our server was very sweet and knowledgeable. I went with their vermouth of the month, an orange spritz, and the key lime sundae. The key lime sundae was incredibly good, I would recommend.

Yelp
This place is a very cute restaurant/lounge that I decided to go in the afternoon on a Sunday and do a little work while I was sitting there. I began with an Affogato, delicious! I had great service and the music was bumping. Nice touch. I enjoyed that people were coming in and contributing their own records as I was sitting there. I ended up also getting a nice n/a beverage and I ended my visit with the petite cheese plate, which was also really delicious. Luckily, I had more honey randomly in my purse and it just made the meal perfect but I'm sure if I asked for just a little dollop more, it wouldn't have been a big problem. Definitely recommend Such a cute spot.

Yelp
My husband and I went to Potential New Boyfriend for a little date night, and it was incredible. I'm obsessed with the vibes--amazing music, an eclectic yet cozy atmosphere, and a really interesting wine selection. We tried the sparkling red Lambrusco and loved it! The truffles were also great and they happened to be $1 that night. It's perfect for a vibey night spot on a date or with friends since they do have some seating for groups--mainly in a couch area, depending on how busy it is since it is on the smaller side. Overall, so worth the hype. That's my rant!

Yelp
Great food, great service, the vibe is modern mid century. This is such a cute date night/day spot.

Yelp
Went on a rainy Tuesday afternoon. Great selection of unique drinks with a menu that aids you in selecting to your taste, a generous aperitivo serving (we had the XL), but the dessert (Golden Girl [tahini cheesecake with apricot glaze and amarena cherries]) was the star of the show. We also had a scoop of the fig brûlée ice cream; packed with figs, packed with flavor without being overly sweet or clawing. Best desserts we've had in a long time anywhere. Service was attentive and kind. Ambiance was cozy with a great soft music selection and decor to match. Will definitely be back.

Yelp
Don't have the energy to be critical rn and finding any flaws with our experience would be difficult so here it is: everything was perfect - the space and vibe, the service, the food, the coffee. Everything. Check 'em out.

Yelp
Eclectic personified.. perfect vibe for west Asheville.. driving through and found this catchy place..

Caitlin B.

Yelp
Seemed to have good reviews so we gave it a try. I went with 2 friends and none of us enjoyed the food. Not to mention the food and drinks are quite overpriced. It was packed so tight we could tap shoulders with the people behind us and next to us if we wanted to. Felt claustrophobic. The employees seemed pretty nice and patient with us since it was our first (and last) time there.

Savannah B.

Yelp
Super nice spot the desserts were amazing. I'm not a huge wine fan so I wish they had cocktail options but very calm ambiance and great server. Would go back.

Cathy C.

Yelp
I enjoyed a very relaxing interlude here this afternoon. My menu choice was a Turtle Sunday paired with Madeira - yum! The owner, who is strong on customer service, is glad to offer advice on additional wine and ice cream pairings. Prices are reasonable. Looking forward to the charcuterie next time.

Katie S.

Yelp
What a great new addition to west Asheville! Awesome desserts, cool vibe and helpful service. Cool new hang
