"This small chain from Tijuana, in a Chula Vista strip mall, specializes in Guerrero-style pozole blanco (pork and hominy stew in “white broth,” which is actually a clear soup with accents of garlic and onion) and antojitos (quick, casual snacks that are often corn-based and fried). It also offers a pozole surtido, made with a mixture of pork jowls, ears, and tongue. One of the best parts about ordering up a piping-hot bowl of this flavorful soup is topping it off with all of the fresh fixings. Don’t be shy with the squeezes of fresh lime juice, sliced radishes, onions, and cabbage. A crunchy tostada can serve as a vehicle for scooping up the grains of hominy and tender pork. You also can’t leave without trying the crunchy potato tacos." - Kristin Díaz de Sandi

It was definitely a different style of mexican cuisine I was not accustomed to. Very delicious. Service was excellent, very attentive, despite a minor language barrier on my part. We will definitely return.

Google
Delicious. The pozole is amazing and the combination plates give you a couple different flavors when you can't make up your mind. It's all got that good home made flavor and their red salsa is fire! If you've had it you know what I'm talking about, if you haven't then you should. You can also call ahead and pick up. My mouth is watering just thinking about it.

Google
Food was good. Tried the pozole of course but their other dishes looked delicious too! The staff was friendly, they even sent my baby some mashed potatoe for him to eat. Really appreciated the thoughtfulness

NEW REVIEW 5/3/2020: We recently ordered food from Pozoleria Doña Maria during the pandemic lock down. We simply called it in while at the business parking lot and after a short 15 minute wait we got the food. The food was delicious as always and containers were of very good quality. We eat in the car and don't need the container to be low quality and break spilling all the food on my lap as it happened once while visiting a different business. We are happy to support our local businesses and will be back soon. OLDER REVIEW: Really authentic mexican food is served here. I ordered beef tacos dorados and my wife ordered pozole. She absolutely loved it and said that it was the best pozole she had in a long time. My tacos were great too. We will definitely come back soon.

Google
It was very good. When we went there there were like no places open and we had to wait but it was just like a 5min wait. The food was good too.

Luz Lopez

Google
The flautas were soo delicious. I love how the food has such a homemade type of vibe. The sopes were also fire. Can’t wait to be back 😎

Yelp
Amazing food and great service! I had been craving a nice bowl of pozole and I was brought to the right place! The pozole was perfect and the tacos dorados were even better!

Yelp
Been coming to this place for years. A must try. My favorites: Pozole with chicken. Mole Enchiladas. Combo platter; has a few items to try out. I pick that when my taste buds can't pick just 1 item lol. In the winter season they offer Atole de Ciruela. If you know you know! The service is amazing, never have I ever been given bad service. Thank you everyone.

Perla C.

Yelp
Loved the potato rolled tacos that came with the combo. Everything else in the combo was good too. A lot of food options to choose from.

Melissa R.

Yelp
Authentic Guerrero style Mexican food. Food: They do start you off w/ a bowl of chips and green salsa. We got the appetizer papas con crema. I enjoyed this dish, and it's not something I typically find in Mexican restaurants in my own city. Potatoes are my favorite food, so this appetizer was perfect for me. As main dishes, we got one plate of enchiladas de mole and one plate of flautas (taquitos). Both dishes had a great flavor. I appreciated how they let me mix & match the filling inside the flautas. I was able to try three different fillings - rajas, requesón, and papas. All three items that I tried were amazing and I'd recommend them. Service: Any person who came by our table gave us excellent service. We never had to wait long for our cups to be refilled. Super friendly. All in all, next time I come to San Diego, I'd come back for more !

Yelp
ENCHILADAS ARE NOT CREATED EQUAL I was hAngry and short on time and thought I was walking into a taco shop. After entering it was like a time lapse into Ensenada or TJ. I knew something authentic was going on here.  I was invited to sit down with a menu.  "Oh okay a taco shop with table service. " And what caught my eye was the picture homage of an indigenous elder taking a puff from her spliff.   It wasn't until I saw the different pozole choices, including other traditional Guerrero style Mexican dishes that I understood the assignment.  I'm not a pozole fan, but during the sixty minutes,  there were three grandma's with their families getting their grub on! Surely the pozole could be right from their kitchens.  I ordered three chicken verde enchiladas. Rice and beans are not included. Nice presentation. I would rate it a 2.5/5. After all this is a pozoleria. In all fairness, I couldn't rate overall low because service, cleanliness and wait time were excellent. Yelp
I don't know how it has four stars the posole don't have no flavor it tastes like water started adding stuff and it didn't even help out and then it had paper plastic and the soaps is hard as a rock this place used to be good but it's horrible don't recommend it trust me.

Lynda Y.

Yelp
Prompt, friendly, service & homemade food--I really enjoyed my lunch here. :) *check out the Chile Relleno: lots of onion and tomato inside too (a lot more texture to it & healthier than just cheese) $4.50 for one but it was a meal unto itself Comfortably busy, ingredients were fresh and the dishes tasted like they were made with care. Family run & it shows :)

Christian C.

Yelp
Their pozole surtido and a chile relleno hits the spot every time. Great service, too.

elena R.

Yelp
If i cloud i would give zero stars, we all order pozole de maciza the meat tasted old the pozole had no taste it was like if the pozole had been frozen, the description didn't say it came with chicken and it had chicken sopes are not made there. Never coming again

Cecilia O.

Yelp
I love the green pozole is my favorite from here! ! Chicken or pork ether one!

Carmen F.

Yelp
Pozole is delicious. However, my favorite is the green chicken enchiladas and the chile relleno.

Woefulcountenance D.

Yelp
Just had there flagship plate pork soup mixed. tasted old and chewy then I bit into a piece of meat cold as an ice cube. they reheat old soup and sell it to the public! further, they reheated by dropping it in the microwave and placed it in front of me like it was no big deal. 19 dollars for slop!

Vanessa N.

Yelp
All the food here is amazing! My husband and I love coming here for breakfast and I even take some pozole for takeout if I'm craving it and don't feel like making it! Service is always very friendly and attentive.

Joselin R.

Yelp
Amazing Tacos dorados !! De carne was so tender and juicy! 10/10 I also tired the pozole with extra grano... yummmy to die for !! Hands down best tacos dorados in the southbay!

Jamilett A.

Yelp
SORRY this is the most plain pozole I have ever tasted. I live in San Diego,Ca. Drove 35 minutes for tasted like plain broth !! Absolutely Disappointed Would pay any amount for a good bowl of Pozole. Don't bother eating here. I will NOT return!

Cecy T.

Yelp
Been going here for years. Myriam is the best server, always smiling , checks on you always even if your not her table. Our go to Pozole place. Love the taquitos dorados, enchiladas and sopes. Family ambiance Myriam siempre nos atienda con un sonrisa. Y la comida toda riquísima

Natasha Y.

Yelp
Everything taste homemade here, from the pozole to the rolled tacos to the enchiladas 100% The reason for it not being 5 stars was everything was cold but the pozole unfortunately, it might of been a mistake but who knows, we waiting for about 45 mins so they might of forgot about us and it was sitting but again I'm just guessing. Either way the food has so much depths of flavor with layers and layers of ingredients and you tasted every single one of them! We had the chicken verde enchiladas, chicken mole enchiladas, pozole and rolled tacos , the verde sauce was definitely the best I've ever had, the rolled tacos were definitely homemade and amazing, I like mole but I wasn't a fan of this one, it was too sweet for me and kinda tasted more like a pie, the pozole was good with a very meaty flavor. We would come here everyday if we could!!

Chris O.

Yelp
One of the most authentic Mexican restaurants in SD, you'll know just by walking in. The pozole is good every time & I highly recommend the enchiladas. This place beats any white washed spot in Old Town any day.

Ana I.

Yelp
Rico todo!!! Muy buen servicio. El pozole de pollo muy muy rico pero el caldo no es de pollo. A mi no me molesta pero abra alguien que no quiera o pueda comer puerco.

Marcia R.

Yelp
We signed inside for a table it was a busy lunch time..we had been there about a 15mins. Before we got a table We both knew kinda what we wanted. When you sit down here comes 2 different kinds of salsa's red salsa Chile de Árbol & aguacate con verde tomatillos salsa yum yum I love tacos but today I tried some very vegetarian except for the Chorizo' of course. Ay ay los tacos Son deliciosos!! Las flautas también. The tacos were fried crispy with crema & queso and lot of fresh lettuce & tomatoe I even bought home Pozole 2 container for tonite dinner. They give you all the condiments. the service here are very friendly too!

Claudia V.

Yelp
Woah, why have I had this place bookmarked forever? The weather is getting chilly in California so soup season is here! Decided to head to Pozoleria Dona Maria and stopped In to order to go. Their specialty is Pozole which is a Mexican soup made with pork and hominy. Most pozoles I've had all my life are red, but here the broth is white (clear). I was hesitant since all I've had is red broth. The cashier reassured me that the flavor is the same.Decided to order a chicken pozole which has white chicken meat, but the broth is made with pork. The location is small tucked in a shopping center. The restaurant was busy for a Friday night, but the staff was very nice and took their time to answer all my questions. In the end I ordered chicken pozole and a flauta. Let me say that I ate the flauta in my car because it looked so good! Freshly made and it had all the toppings, lettuce, tomato, avocado and crema. This place is like eating at grandmas house. So delicious. It was so good I want to go back today with my family!

Claudia S.

Yelp
This is a family owned Guerrero, Mexico styled restaurant. Their sister location is in downtown Tijuana, Mexico so you can imagine the authenticity of the food. It's no wonder people would line up outside for this place!!! It's easy to order for takeout now during Covid. The place only has about 15 small tables anyways so I would order for takeout even prior to Covid regulations. Their signature dish is the pozole soup, which is pork and fermented corn (hominy) in a spicy broth. You can choose from three sizes: Junior, medium/regular and large. You can get it non-spicy if you can't handle it by asking for the white pozole. I recommend the original red pozole though as it tastes just like your grandma cooked it with love! Absolute mouth watering tender pork and soft hominy in every bite. I would rate the spiciness of the red broth at a 5. I also love ordering the patitas de puerco or pickled pig feet. They're drenched in vinegar satisfying your craving for sour and tart deliciousness. I've also tried their other menu items such as the combination #1. It comes with a green chicken enchilada, chicken sope, shredded beef tostada and fried potato rolled taco. Everything is topped with shredded lettuce, fresh tomatoes, avocado slices, Mexican cheese, and homemade sour cream and salsa. Everything is PACKED with meats. The meats are so juicy and tender I can't even explain how savory each bite is; you have to try them! I love how they use real corn tortillas and not imitation corn like Maseca. You won't find a more delicious and accurately authentic Mexican pozole anywhere else in SoCal, so you best try this place out.

DennIs S.

Yelp
This place is on point... Feels like arriving to grandma's restaurant in Mexico city. The Service, food, and ambiance is worth our 30 minute drive. The tostadas,,,, ssshhhh patina! Don't miss out

Anna G.

Yelp
This place is really good. Their wait time is not bad whenever it does gets packed. Ordering to go is good, the time thry stated the order would be ready was pretty accurate. The pozole is bomb, as well as the Enchiladas de Mole are great. Nice family ambience.

Nancy M.

Yelp
This is a hidden gem! I've tried many, but many pozoles including in Mexico and this comes pretty close to those authentic Mexican flavors in Mexico. The Antojitos are simple but flavorful. Love getting their potatoes with cream to go with the tacos dorados o pozole. The pozole comes either with maciza which is a tender meat or surtido with maciza and pigs ears. You can choose the jr size for half the price, the small for $9 or the big. The small size is pretty filling. I would recommend getting the Jr size and tryingn one of their combination plates that come with a sope, flauta, enchilada and tostada. This is a family owned restaurants and we should be supporting small businesses.

Honest Review S.

Yelp
Been coming here for years. They are very consistent with their food. Very friendly staff, food is delicious. Ambiance is nothing crazy, but the food hits. I've gotten basically everything on the menu. Love their rolled tacos, pozole surtido, and salsas they have. Will continue coming back. Does get busy on weekends because it's the perfect hangover food!

K D.

Yelp
Their posole taste water down. No flavor. No salt. No chile. Sorry this place sucks. My brother told me about this place, that should have been my first hint to avoid it but decided to give it a try. I should have saved my money. I wanted to like it but nope.

Chris Y.

Yelp
This is some of the best Mexican food I've ever had. My gf who grew up in the area took me here and I love everything on the menu. Apparently the sister location is in TJ and the food speaks for itself. Amazing authentic Mexican food that tastes like someone's abuelita made it for you. I'm eyeing the Chile rellenos for the next time I make it down there. This place has become my go-to restaurant for anytime I have a friend visiting from out of town or were having a posole craving. It's so good...I forgot to take a picture. Recommended items: pozole, combo 1, tacos dorados de papa, flautas

Tianna A.

Yelp
Felt like my amas home cooked food! Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for authentic Mexican comfort food!

Jack M.

Yelp
In lieu of Pozole, what this place is famous for, I opt for the Chicken Mole Enchiladas. I am a huge fan of dark mole, and this one with its savory, nutty flavor and touch sweet was quite delicious. It also had that a great creamy quality. I appreciated the fact that they garnished the mole with finely grated Mexican cheese, a drizzle of crema, and a dusting of peanut dust. The enchiladas themselves were good. All three came with a generous amount of shredded white chicken that was tender but a little dry. The corn tortillas the enchiladas were made with were good and had an interesting texture in that they had a bit of a chew. The enchiladas also came topped with lettuce, tomatoes, and most importantly sliced avocado. I love avocado a top my enchiladas. Service was efficient and friendly. They offer great mini tostadas with their salsas etc.

Brian R.

Yelp
We decided to be impulsive and have lunch at this place and it was the best decision we made

Nick C.

Yelp
I've been feeling a little sick lately and was craving some good strong caldo, and the pozole here definitely hit the spot. I ordered the pozole maciza as well as a flauta requesón, enchilada verde (chicken), and tostada de pata. The star of the show was definitely the pozole accompanied by the red salsa in one of the bottles provided. The flauta left much to be desired, but the tostada and the enchilada were flavorful and satisfying.

Brook G.

Yelp
Woke up today not was cold n started raining n I wanted some food pozole so me n my boyfriend found this little place close by and I'm glad I did I got a small order of the pozole Blanco with the mixed meats I loved it the broth was supper clean n flavor full definitely going to be ordering pozole from here for now on !! I also got the mola enchiladas the sauce was little to sweet for my liking but my boyfriend like them the crema is home made n it's supper good ! My boyfriend got a combination plate which came with four different things on it he liked everything on his plate. Can't wait to come back

Andres R.

Barby D.

Yelp
I was looking for a chicken Pozole place and find this place. At first sight this place is a hole in the wall. But I was pleasantly surprised with great customer service and great food. I order Chicken Pozole and my husband order the mole chicken enchiladas. Both of them were delicious! The agua de jamaica was good too. Prices are very reasonable and the service was great. I highly recommend this awesome place.

Mrs R.

Yelp
Authentic Mexican food, friendly service. Everything I tried is delicious. Keep coming back!!

Alma G.

Yelp
Excellent service, first time trying it. My family and I loved it, my dad absolutely loved the beef tacos dorados. The posole mixto is great! We'll be coming back here for sure!

Alejandra G.

Yelp
This is a great find... food is delicious and customer service is great The best was the variation in rolled tacos... They even have chorizo rolled tacos!! How unique is that! The were delicious!!

Blas H.

Yelp

Jerri H.

Yelp
The Pozole was good, I ordered takeout & the service was excellent. It's a place that I will return to!

Mia A.

Yelp
Always delicious, service is good. It's so easy to over order here because you want try everything porque está delicioso! My favs are obviously the pozole and the flautas de requesón. The tostadas are great, the tacos dorados are so tasty. It's always stretchy pants time when I eat here! Enjoy!

Andre Y.

Yelp
Amazing amazing amazing, order was to go, pazole was epic and so so good would definitely get that again!! the only reason I took off a star is because the verde enchiladas, fluatas, and mole enchiladas are completely cold, I'm not sure if the order was just sitting there while we waited for the pazole because the soup was super hot. Wish the rest of the food was at least warm but sadly just cold. Flavor is there but for the price of 10.99 per dish I would expect it to be served at least warm.

Elena C.

Yelp
Still the best pozole I've had. Anytime I have family visit, this place is the first place I take them too. They love it just as much! And the service is great.

Azucena F.

Yelp
Me comí un pozole y la verdad estaba muy bueno, pero el combinado grande, nada grasoso, buen sabor, recomendado

Samantha N.

Yelp
Horrible place! Do not come here the food was gross!! Just look at how they gave my mom her potatoe tacos burnt! They did not gave no seasonings for the posole. My rolled tacos had mayonise with cream gross! And the guacamole was black! Never again! Over priced and horrible customer service!! Just look at the photos!! No vengan qui mi comida estaba bien quemada la papa y bien mal

Lorely K.

Yelp
Delicious Pozole,Enchiladas, and dorado de papa. Right now is the best way to place your order over the phone and pick up. They package everything in seal spillproof bags

Frank C.

Yelp
First time here recommended by a cousin we stopped by ordered Pozole Blanco which was really good also ordered tacos Dorados those were very greasy but they were ok and also had the enchiladas which were also OK overall a three ***. Green Salsa on point with the chips.

Bren R.

Yelp
No fue de mi agrado el pozole, las flautas sabían buenas. El agua fresca no sabe a jamaica. El ambiente es agradable aunque falta un poco de aseo y el servicio es lento aunque amable.

Johnna G.

Yelp
This is by far my favorite Pozoleria. They never fail. Of course I love their pozole, but the also have delicious flautas, tacos, etc. They are always really friendly and the service is usually pretty quick. You can dine in or take out. I've never dined in, it's usually an order and go type of deal. I'm not really sure why it's taken me so long to leave a review because I've been coming here for a long time and they are consistently delicious. Try them out!
