In my ongoing search for a bakery that matches 1900 Barker in Lawrence, KS., I drove 20+ miles to Prager Brothers for lunch and to try out their sour dough. So far, price agnostic, the ranking goes: Izola beats Prager Bros beats the rest, which includes O'Briens, Bread & Cie, French Oven. But adding price into the equation, to me, Prager Bros beats Izola.
People were friendly. Need to see all the industrial baking equipment, and a decent view onto the hills when eating at the window side counter.
Ham & cheese sandwich. C+ only. Both the ham and cheese were good quality, but both tasted bland. Mustard didn't help much and baguette was rather dry although flavor was decent.
Chocolate croissant. Decent flavor, but lacks texture. No crunchiness at all. Deserves a "B" - a little toasting at home would help.
Brought home a loaf of walnut raisin. Good flavor with fairly good amounts of raisin & walnut, the crumb was a little tight, likely because hydration wasn't high enough. But a strong "B+" nonetheless. The walnut raisin was $7.50. The closest competitor at Izola - the cranberry pecan sourdough - is $17.58. Yes, very tasty, especially their roasted garlic sourdough, but $17.58 is too rich for my bank account.
Soon, I will make it out to try out the pizza. Open Tuesdays to Saturday only. And to finish my sour dough tour, I still need to make it out to Wayfarer.
