Former White House Pastry Chefs Bring Praline Bakery to the Wharf | Eater DC

"At the Wharf development, Praline Bakery has opened a glassy, open third D.C.-area location whose display case begins with a rainbow of macarons and moves through cheerful enclaves of croissants, muffins, cookies, and cakes before ending with sandwiches and quiches. Founded in 2006 by former White House pastry chefs Susan Limb and Patrick Musel—who met at the White House and previously worked at Filomena—the bakery expanded from a Bethesda bistro to shops in the Mosaic District (Fairfax) in 2016, Southwest D.C., and an outpost at Glen Echo Park. Bestsellers and standouts include the fragrant almond croissant, a generously filled blueberry muffin, a robust opera cake, and the classic ham-and-cheese baguette; a lighter option is the walnut dacquoise, available by the slice or whole. Limb emphasizes intensity of flavor: "When we say it's a flavor, it is that flavor. There's no guesswork, not a hint of flavor," and she says her chocolate truffle cake "is more chocolatey than sweet. You're getting chocolate, not sugar." Consistency is another tenet—guests should expect the same flavor, quality, and freshness every time—and Limb is planning to introduce bingsu, a Korean shaved milk treat, in the summer. Praline Bakery is located at 965 7th Street SW and is open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m." - Andrea Adleman

I came to this shop earlier today while exploring the wharf area in DC. It seemed like a cute and exciting place from the outside. To my dismay, inside was different story. I’m not sure what their hours are, but at 2pm there was only one young lady working and the pastry case were pretty skimp. Not much to choose from at all. I ended up walking out without purchasing anything and there were other people inside who seem to have been waiting for a long time as well.

Writing this in hopes the owner sees this. We visited on a cold afternoon in hopes for hot coffee and a sweet. The almond croissant was incredible and the cupcakes delicious. There is a staff member though middle to older woman who is incredibly rude and snapped at the other young boy who offered us a bag. “Why do you say things like that. We dont have any bags.” She also tried to tell us a Latte and a Cappuccino were the same thing and that the machine couldnt do a good job. The coffee was AWFUL to the point we were afraid to drink it. Additionally on a cold day, there is no where to sit only a small table that the rude staff member sits at clearly bothered to do her job so we sat at the two bar seats available. Such a shame as the pastries were great. Hoping the owner sees this and can fix the situation with the staff

The macaroons were stale. The funfetti cookie has rock hard & did not taste good. The prices were way too high for what it was. The guy working there was friendly. Save yourself some money & fo next door to Starbucks!

Wanted a sweet treat after lunch. This bakery was right where the Uber was picking us up but I should have looked at the reviews. What we got ranged from really good to completely bland. Macaroon - mid. As other people mentioned, not flakey. Vanilla cupcake - bland. The texture was good for a dense cake but just no flavor Lemon bar - my husband said this was really good Hot chocolate - this was absolutely excellent. If I was walking by, I would order this again.

The Praline Bakery seems large for the few products they had when we visited them. Entering it, as it looked like an European store from the outside, we were surprise at the very simple and kind of lack of personality of the store inside. Both main displays were basically empty but had great macaroons (specially the apricot and caramel ones!). Although the price per piece was rather high for the size of the macaroons, (smaller than regular macaroons) the taste made it worth the price. The day we were there they had Italian soft nougat bars in several different flavors. Although the price was also high the quality and taste was great!!! We bought several of these bars and we enjoyed them very much!!! The girls at the counter were less than friendly!!

Google
Good options for sweet and savory options. They also serve Lavazza coffee products. They also serve French macarons and freshly baked cookies on site. We had the espresso chocolate, triple chocolate cookie, and macarons. Reasonably priced given the location at Wharf DC.

Near Hilton's Canopy at the Wharf is a Bethesda-based bakery owned by two pastry chefs who met while working at the White House. Here's our experience visiting after ice skating (located at the other end of the Wharf): 1) Food: My four-year-old daughter and wife each got a macaroon- one chocolate and one raspberry. They both really enjoyed it. One makes for a great small snack, especially for a toddler. 2) Drinks: I ordered a small hot chocolate and loved it. It's thicker hot chocolate and less sweet. However, the thickness makes it very rich so a small was more than enough. 3) Space: It's awkwardly large for a pastry shop. However, the space allows for a few tables and plenty of room to social distance during the pandemic. 4) Service: The person working was not warm, but attentive so no complaints.

I stopped by District Praline after visiting Starbucks, hoping to grab a cookie to pair with my tea. The bakery offers macarons, pastries, and cookies, which looked appealing from the outside. Unfortunately, the customer service was underwhelming. The staff was short and not very helpful—when I asked questions about the products, they couldn’t offer any real suggestions or guidance. It felt like they weren’t interested in creating a welcoming experience. I ordered a lemon drop cookie, which was okay—not bad, but nothing memorable. What really stood out was the price: over $3 for one cookie, with no deals for buying multiple. I purchased it because I wasn’t feeling well and just wanted something small to enjoy with my tea, but on a regular day, I wouldn’t pay that much for a single cookie. To top it off, when I asked for a printed receipt, I was told the machine was broken. While things happen, I believe that if a customer requests a receipt, one should be provided in print form. Overall, the concept of the bakery is nice, but the execution and customer service fall short. I won’t be returning—mainly due to high prices, unhelpful staff, and poor accountability at the register.

Yelp
Initially I was disappointed because one would assume with that name you could purchase.... Pralines!! lol. No pralines Their macaron selection is amazing!! They are made with almond flour. So they are gluten free. I went there 5 out of 7 days!! Raspberry and lemon were wonderful. They also had a delicate gluten free almond lemon cake. A little pricey but delicious. The people working there were very sweet and quick to answer questions. It's down at the wharf. There are swings and seats out on the pier which was a great place to enjoy my treats!!

Yelp
It was the window display that drew me in, I'll admit, it's fun, whimsical and who can say no to a bakery. We went in about five minutes before close so many of the items were gone. But they were friendly and happy to serve us. Cookies were great!

Yelp
I was in the area at the end of March sorry it took me so long to review. I was traveling to dc and walked by and got a grime of the pastries display in the window and cannot hold back and walked right in. I saw so many yummy treat but I just have dinner and a drink so now perfect time for dessert and they have my fav which are macarons. So many favors. So I bought a dozen with all the favors and it came with the little box. The shop is spacious and well decorated. The cashier is friendly.

Yelp
Located at the Wharf, this bakery is absolutely amazing and worth a pit stop before you walk around! The interior is adorable and the service was so fast. I got an iced latte and a brownie -- it was delicious. I wish I lived here so I could go back often!!

Yelp
Praline Bakery on the SW Waterfront at The Wharf is your classic boutique bakery serving cakes, specialty cookies, artisanal pastries, cupcakes, and sandwiches. They also serve cafe drinks. It is situated on the bottom retail floor of the Hyatt House Hotel, with entry from the driveway adjacent to Hank's Oyster Bar. As you'd expect of a boutique bakery, Praline Bakery has inviting decor with plenty of color pop and pretty artwork. The customer service is also good. Overall a good experience to satisfy your sweet tooth while on a stroll on the waterfront. Give them a try.
google avatar

Bella J.

Yelp
Located at the wharf, it's a nice bakery with good macaron. I didn't personally like their lemon cake or cookies, but the macaron was good. Service was nice.
google avatar

Sasha R.

Yelp
Adorable little bakery. Service was fast as it wasn't super busy. I got a few desserts and an oatmeal cookie. I ate them real quick and didn't take any pictures they were so good .
google avatar

Ameena A.

Yelp
Sadly - gluten free peeps this place is not for you!! All we can eat is macarons. I got one, and it was just "ok." I would love to see more gluten free options here. The ambiance is cute, the service was fine - however nothing really stood out to me about this bakery.
google avatar

Sharonda M.

Yelp
For a first timer this was a good quick choice in the SW area, just randomly looking for baked cookies and Praline didn't disappoint. The service was great very friendly environment and workers are patient. The menu options are not that different in variety but for my first visit I decided on snickerdoodle & the praline cookie itself. Snickerdoodle 2.7/5 only because i was a little disappointed that it was pretty bland and not much flavor Praline 5/5 everything i never imagined, definitely a favorite.

Yelp
Awesome place to chill and people watch. Food and service were great. We enjoyed this cafe.

Yelp
We went late in the day and they were sold out of the fruit tarte which I wanted so bad, when i saw online haha. The lemon bar is super tart which is my favorite!!! it was super yummy. The raspberry pame, i don't remember the second word. Essentially it was a chocolate raspberry mousse cake almost. Both very good. Would recommend ! Went back a second time, the fruit tarte is so to die for it has a sweet custard on which the fruit lie. 15/10 yes a 15/10 bc it's so awesome and good and yummy and crisp. Lemon almond cake is sweet and delicate, very subtle.

Yelp
I will usually not review a store rather than give a bad review. Not this time. First, they have no artificial sweeteners. The guy behind the counter smuggly told me "sugar is better for you". While I don't disagree in theory, as a bariatric patient, regular sugar in a drink will make me very sick. We found some Splenda nearby and went back for some desperately needed coffee. I wanted a coffee, they were out of drip coffee. OK, got a latte that was lukewarm at best. They had "bad for you" sugar-free syrup at least. My husband got an iced coffee with regular milk because they were out of milk substitutes. They were out of the cold brew coffee as well, so he got a nitro that was barely drinkable. The pumpkin spice cookie was just OK and a bit small for the price. We should have turned the corner and gone to Starbucks. I think it would have been cheaper and I know it would have been better.

Yelp
After lunch at the wharf, we strolled along the boardwalk and happened upon Praline Bakery just as our sweet tooth started to twitch. We marveled at all the goodies behind the glass case and settled on a lemon bar and some cookies. Deee-licious! The lemon bar was tart and smooth, not too sweet, and it hit the spot. The cookies were soft and firm, a little chewy and full of flavor - special shout out for the peanut butter cookie and the chocolate espresso cookie, my favorites! If you're wandering around the wharf and looking for some goodies, give Praline Bakery a try!

Yelp
A charming little bakery offering a wide selection of drinks and pastries. Our favorite was the macarons--they were a delightful treat after a long day of walking.
google avatar

Alex F.

Yelp
These macaroons were delicious definitely a must stop spot in the WARF. I had the cinnamon and the orange macaroons and they wer both delicious and tasty. Great place open areas sitting Inside or outside. The staff is very attentive and knows their macaroons. Definitely will go here again when I'm in DC.

Yelp
Thanks to the young lady who stayed open right until 8:00 p.m. We walked in about 7:54 p.m. and were greeted immediately. I asked her if she was about to close and she said yes. She was very polite and patient. I asked for a recommendation and she named a few but that carrot cupcake in the window was calling my name, "Nessa, pick me, pick me." So I picked the carrot cupcake. Got a chocolate cupcake too because well of course we have to try a traditional flavor. And we tried the recommended lemon cookie and a chocolate chip. Yes! That carrot cupcake was to die for! I wasn't a fan of the cookies because they were super hard but the cupcakes, YES! I'll be back for more.

Kylie K.

Yelp
TLDR: Subpar food, rude service. Terrible service from the moment we walked in. I get it, we're all humans and we all have bad days but my boyfriend and I were nothing but polite when we walked in this Saturday morning and were met with snippy, blunt service with zero formalities. No hello or good morning, seemed upset that we only ordered a breakfast sandwich and cold brew, then proceeded to not seem to know how to work the register. No cash is allowed, and our cards were not going through for whatever reason. When we tried to clarify if they take Amex she reported she didn't know what that was- finally she managed to get one of our cards through, tossed our food in the bag with no regard (the sandwich was completely unassembled by the time we opened the bag). She then came to where I was sitting and waiting and slammed in the chair next to me so rudely; as if I wasn't capable of pushing in our chairs. People in line observing her behavior made the right decision and left. Don't waste your time here until they work on a serious attitude change!
google avatar

Amy S.

Yelp
We always love a good bakery. We walked back and forth to check out all the items before making the decision of what to get. We got a few things: macarons (lemon, mango, apricot)- delicious; lemon ginger cookies- to die for; lemon drop cookies- pretty delicious - great combination of sweetness and tartness; crunch bar- very tasty; Florentine- very lovely. Not the sexist looking cookies but they were pretty amazing. Definitely would revisit if we are in the area.

Yelp
A cute bakery shop right next door to the Canopy Hilton. The bake shop can be accessed from outside or through the ground floor of the hotel. It's a cute bake shop. Nicely decorated and the customer service was great. The cupcakes appealed to me the most so I decided on a classic flavor, red velvet, as well as a raspberry cupcake. The red velvet was my favorite of the two. It was moist, fresh, and the flavor was on point. I loved the cream cheese icing as well. Now, the raspberry cupcake was not a match. The flavor was underwhelming and it didn't taste as fresh as the other. When I happen to visit The Wharf again, I'd definitely stop by for that red velvet cupcake.

Yelp
Adorable! What else can be said? Super cute little bakery at the Waterfront. I got a latte and a lemon drop cookie (what can I say? I'm a sucker for anything lemon in baked goods.) it was a pretty quiet day due to bad weather, so there wasn't a wait for my coffee nor any problem finding a seat - I assume this could be an issue on busier days. Anyway, great food, lovely space, and nice place to while away a little time on a grey day.
google avatar

Addison K.

Yelp
Right when I walked in, the whole vibe of the store felt nice-- but that quickly changed when we were putting in our order. The young woman who was at the register was kind at first, but then began to act snobby. She even gave my mama a rude glare. ‼‼ Besides that, we got two fruit tarts, and three cookies. They all tasted lovely and I fucking got on all fours for it
google avatar

Yelp
Review for macarons only: I love macarons and so popped in here before heading back to our car from dinner on the wharf. I got one of almost every flavor. They were fresh and flavors were good. Expensive but all macarons are. Friendly staff and cute space with a little room for seating (or you can grab your macarons (or whatever you'd like to order) and sit along the water and enjoy them there : )
google avatar

Sara B.

Yelp
LOCATION: Praline's Bakery is within the wharf area, offering both grab-and-go convenience and limited cozy seating by the window FOOD: Rich flavored tart and a selection of macarons, including lemon, cinnamon, mango, and coffee flavors, impressed with its deliciousness. The unexpected pleasant surprise was the cinnamon macaron with flavors of churros and Cinnabon, while the coffee macaron offered a surprising twist reminiscent of tiramisu, though its scent was stronger than its taste. Additionally, the iced coffee exceeded expectations with its quality and flavor. SERVICE: Quick, professional & courteous. However, while polite, the staff's knowledge of the best-selling items for recommendations could be improved. AMBIANCE: Touches of charm incorporating its pink hues into the decor, including ceiling pipes, and creative light fixtures shaped like giant whisks. Overall, Praline's Bakery offers a delightful culinary experience with a charming ambiance and friendly service."

Michelle C.

Yelp
The service is friendly. The coffee is ok. Selection of pastries, cookies, and cakes, including gluten free and dairy free macarons. There are not many tables, which is odd considering how large the space is, and that impacts the overall ambience. Also a bit cold - we kept our coats on!

Yelp
I stopped by this place for some macaroons and boy were they delicious. Pricy but delicious. One macaroon goes for $2.50. I would definitely be back to get some additional seasonal flavors. My favorite was the vanilla one.
google avatar

Diana K.

Yelp
I love to find a good bakery, especially ones that have a good red velvet cupcake. This bakery is located right next to the Canopy Hotel. You can actually enter the bakery through the hotel. There were a couple people inside and one lady behind the counter. The lady behind the counter finally spoke to us after being asked a question about the cupcakes. They had red velvet so I grabbed one of those. It looked yummy, but unfortunately did not taste as good as it looked. The frosting was cold and firm and the cake was not moist at all. It seemed like they may have just been taken out of a fridge/freezer. It did not taste fresh. They have a ton of other baked good options and sandwiches. Hopefully those are a bit better.
google avatar

Smita D.

Yelp
I am someone who craves cupcakes-- usually vanilla cupcakes, and good cupcakes at that. I got dinner nearby and then saw this shop and thought I would grab dessert, even if it was a cookie. Then, to my delight I saw cupcakes. I did ask for vanilla, but was accidentally given carrot. It was totally okay though since it was DELICIOUS. For walking in at 7:50PM, right before closing, to getting a surprisingly well priced cupcake, I was super impressed. Very moist cake, the most delicious cream cheese frosting... If they were not closed now, I might get a second one! I think I will grab some before I head out of the area tomorrow. Thank you praline bakery for being open so late and having delicious cupcakes!

Barbara A.

Yelp
The food is good, the service is spotty. The bakery is wonderful but they sometimes run out of some bakery items by noon. My favorite menu item of beef bourguignon has been removed from the menu. It was delicious, and I do not go to Praline as often since they stopped having it.
google avatar

Jacqueline K.

Yelp
This is kind of tough to review because nothing was wrong but it was almost as though things just kept falling a little bit short for me. For instance, there's limited seating and not a lot of decor. That's hard for me since it doesn't really invite me to want to stay. Also, the coffee was quite small for the price point and while the carrot cupcake was good, it didn't quite hit the spot. I think if they tweak their offerings and adjust their price points a bit, this is actually a nice place to stop by for a coffee or snack when walking along the Wharf.
google avatar

Brian B.

Yelp
We wanted cupcakes and cookies! Praline Bakery has just that as well as other pastures and macaroons . Unfortunately the cupcake we had was flavorless...now I will say we didn't try them all only the Red Velvet which the cake was over cooked, dry, and flavorless. The icing was good but it stopped there. We also had the carrot cake cupcake on the other hand saved the day! It is good and almost like grandma used to make...not there but close. As for the double chocolate chip cookie it was really good...not the best I've had but good. The service was good and efficient, is go back for the cupcakes. And would love to try the macaroons when they aren't cracked on the outside that's a side that they have sat too long or we're over cooked. So I'll top her and say go check it out but don't get the so called red velvet. The baker should be ashamed of themselves for this terrible cupcake.
google avatar

Francine L.

Yelp
Walked around the Wharf and found this place and divided to walk in and check this place out. Had already finished a meal and was thinking maybe have a nice dessert item along the way back. The inside of the store at the moment does not have seating inside but they did have some chairs and tables outside for you to enjoy your dessert. Decided on just taking it with me and walking back to the hotel to eat it. I ordered two cookies praline and the confetti cookie. Both were different flavors and tasted enjoyable. I liked both of the cookies but I think if I have to choose only one out would be the praline one! The cookie texture was nice and soft! I'm sure if you warmed it up it would also taste good.
google avatar

Nel P.

Yelp
A nice little place at the Wharf for those sweet tooth looking for a fix. They have a decent selection of macarons, cupcakes, and other goodies. I highly recommend their tres leches dessert in a cup....it was really good!

Tyler C.

Yelp
10/10 recommend. The cookies here were amazing. They nailed the texture and made them all flavorful without being overtly sweet. Will definitely be coming back!
google avatar

Bri H.

Yelp
Ran in here on my way to The Anthem for a show and decided to get a croissant. I was looking for chocolate but the raspberry almond did not disappoint! It was more raspberry than almond to me but good and even better warmed up.
google avatar

Marissa G.

Yelp
I like Praline, but they've been out of stock of certain things a number of times that I've visited. They have good coffee and some nice pastries.

Tiphanie D.

Yelp
Worst experience ever! Me and my partner went inside and we were completely ignored by both of the staff members! We wait for 5 minutes and still nothing! I will not be returning!
google avatar

J H.

Yelp
Staff inattentive, unwelcoming. Selections average. Taste is basic. Six people cave at once, didn't ask a single one of they could help them. Both staff members. Oof.
google avatar

Yelp
As a first time customer I was very impressed, the cupcakes were amazing.. the restaurant was clean and the customer service was fantastic #ThankYou
google avatar

Rakel A.

Yelp
Best coconut macaroon I have ever had. Even my little people liked the macaroons so much we went back the next day for more. The cupcakes are made with quality ingredients moist, a little dense but just enough so that they don't fall apart with every bite. Very clean bright location with lots of tasty treats to choose from. Parking is by the water front so it may be a little difficult to get in and out quickly. Great place to take advantage of walking on the pier, enjoying a dessert and a hot chocolate or cold beverage in warmer weather. Beautiful view, stunning sunsets, and dessert! Who'd ask for more?! Happy Eating Yeeps!!!

Yelp
Today, my wife was going to surprise me with an oatmeal raisin cookie from Praline Bakery at the District Wharf. There were 3 staff members, and we were the only customers this morning. Once we arrived home, to her surprise, she screamed and said, "This is not an oatmeal raisin cookie!" Instead, I got a chocolate, chocolate chip cookie, not even close.
google avatar

John C.

Yelp
As mentioned in many of the reviews here, some of the staff here will talk sh*t/complain about you to one another audibly and then pretend they were "just talking to their coworker". Your money can be spent better elsewhere. Specifically, older woman with glasses was annoyed at us for ordering food and drinks and then started to speak badly about customers very audibly to other (younger) staff behind the desk. After I told her if there's a problem with our order and she can just cancel it/refund us, she got even more upset and defensive saying what she says to her coworkers is none of my business. I'm surprised given the volume of complaints about certain servers that they're still employed here. Shame. Spend your hard earned money elsewhere.

Brooke H.

Yelp
The lady at the register was extremely rude and snippy for no reason. But the lemon almond cake was delicious.

Yelp
If you've been to The Wharf in DC then you know it's filled with culinary gems. We popped into Praline Bakery for a snack, and we were in awe of the variety they had to offer. This cute spot specializes in French pastries and they did not disappoint! Follow us on IG for more foodie pics: @BrwndButter

Yelp
I took advantage of the complimentary Wharf Birthday Cookies and they were delish!! I've walked by several times but had never stopped in. After tasting the cookies, this may very well be my new go-to bakery!!!
google avatar

Nicole L.

Yelp
The customer service is beyond rude here. I bought almost $100 worth of cupcakes here in two days. On the second day, no one greeted me when I came in and the lady behind the counter gave me a hard time about wanting the cupcakes in boxes rather than those tacky plastic containers. I insisted on the boxes and she acted like she couldn't hear me and told me I needed to communicate. First of all, I did tell you what I want and second, if you turned the damn music down, you could hear better. They really need to work on their service because the cupcakes are very basic and definitely nothing to write home about. I'll stick to Bakeshop next time.
google avatar

Hannah C.

Yelp
3.5 stars, rounding up for the great croissant. A friend and I ordered coffee, sandwiches, and pastry here. The pastry was the clear star - I got the chocolate pistachio croissant and it was filled with the usual tube of chocolate PLUS a ribbon of pistachio pastry cream. I was just expecting a few nut bits, but was absolutely delighted to get the strong pistachio flavor. I also got a turkey and brie sandwich, which they helpfully warmed up and was quite good. I could totally see grabbing one as a quick lunch regularly if I worked in the area. The latte was, honestly, meh. It's coffee! It's fine! But they are fundamentally not a coffee bar, they're a bakery, so focus on the baked goods.

Audrey F.

Yelp
Lady was a complete bitch. When I was checking out she just tossed my stuff on the counter and after my card went through she started walking away. I asked is she had a bag and she said "who? Me?" Like who else would I be asking a bag? She had her headphones in so I'm sure she was barely listening. Cookies tasted dry and boring.

Arista W.

Yelp
Cute little shop, but they didn't have very many options. I was originally going to get macaroons but they had No deals and it was a bit pricey. The macaroons also looked super small in comparison to what I'm used to do we got a shaved ice lemonade situation (that my kid didn't like for whatever reason by the way) and 2 chocolate cookies. Came up to $12 lol.
