17 Best Bars in Berlin

"Prater Garden, Berlin's oldest biergarten, comprises almost a full acre of communal tables and benches. Although Germany’s capital city doesn't have the biergarten culture of Bavaria, this gem has been around since 1837—and has withstood the multiple tests of time for good reason. Like most biergartens, the atmosphere is relaxed and convivial: People focus on their company first and their drinks (think Pils and housemade dark beer) second. This is also Berlin's best spot for a bratwurst fix; nothing goes better with sun and bier than a grilled sausage, so choose from spicy or standard. Bavarian pretzels make for great beer-side snacks, too." - Krystin Arneson

Google
That is my third beer garden in Berlin, and I believe it is the best one. First of all, it is big yet cozy. There are plenty of shaded areas for lunch during the summer. Secondly, it is located not in a park but in the city center. The place is really nice, and the beer is extremely good. The service is fast and friendly. You can also enjoy traditional bratwurst along with sauerkraut and chicken with potatoes. The most unexpected delight is the wonderful pretzel. I have never had a better pretzel. I would love to come back here in the evening; I bet the atmosphere is magical.

Google
Prater Beer Garden is a large and expansive beer garden in East Berlin. There are tons of tables and plenty of mature trees for shade. They have several beers available which are all great. Food and Bavarian Pretzels are also available. The food and beer are both great. Prater is good spot to relax and enjoy the city.

Google
Visited this place on Monday afternoon. I knew it will be empty but to my surprise there were few people having the beer in quiet environment, enjoying themselves and having nice conversations. We asked the people working there and they said Mondays are like this. But I really like the beer. Would love to go here over weekend to see the louder ambiance.

Google
Haxn was okay, not great. Flammkuchen is the worst, amazing. Cheapest ingredients without any taste, wow. Please, more effort. Beer is fine.

Google
Fantastic venue, great beer, delicious food. Spent a really enjoyable Fri evening here. Would highly recommend to anyone wishing to experience a super relaxed beer garden

Google
Excellent beer garden in East Berlin. Huge place with tons of seats and tables, ideal for large groups. Food and drinks are good, pets are welcome. The staff is friendly and welcoming. Highly recommended.

Google
We visited on a less busy day but even so I could see how when filled with other guests this would be alive and fun! We had a pretzel, potato salad, sauerkraut and sausage. The food was fine at best. You have to go to two separate lines for drinks and food. Also you have to pay a deposit (2 euro) per glass that’s returned when you return your glass. I think it’s priced fairly and had the potential to be great. Overall I think to get the most of this experience one should go when it’s busier.

Google
Very good service. Beer is perfect. The sausage with cabbage was a tasty snack with the beer

Yelp
Just noting that as of this review the hours are incorrect on Yelp so better check the website before you go. It opens at noon, not 6pm on Saturdays. There are plenty of tables with communal seating. It wasn't super busy when I was there but admittedly the weather was pretty poor so I imagine it gets buzzier when the sun is out. I ordered a beer, some sauerkraut and a pretzel. Beer was nice, as was the food. Pretzel seemed stale upon initial inspection but was actually pretty good. They have mustard on the side. Overall, didn't wow me, but it was a nice stop and I'd recommend for someone wanting a chill biergarten to visit in Berlin.

Yelp
Nice beer garden with a good selection for beers at a decent price. They also have some food options. Good for groups and good place to hangout on a nice day.

Yelp
Prater Biergarten has a great selection of German beers as well as some tasty bites to eat while you drink. There's plenty of seating here-- we spent a few hours just hanging out and talking and trying different beers.

Stephanie J.

Yelp
This was recommended by a San Diego friend , delicious , fun vibe outside , all taxis / Ubers know where to go . Great for families ( I guess) not generous food options but quality non the less
google avatar

Yelp
5 star venue (really awesome area with a bunch of tables. It weather is nice go for sure) 4 star beer (good beer not a huge selection) 3 star pretzels (cold and hard with all the salt in one spot)
google avatar

Yelp
The beer garden is the oldest in Berlin- 1837. We came here after dinner, but there is a restaurant here too. There are plenty of communal tables and benches. I don't really drink beer, but it's a nice place to hang out.

Jane T.

Yelp
Perfect beer garden in the city! Plenty of seats as well as little play area for kids. Connection to U-Bahn and tram 1 & tram 12 stop is 2 min walk away. This is where the locals and visitors go for a fresh drink and yummy wurst/ Pommes (sausage/ fries) Surrounded by tall trees, it's tucked away from the bustling streets of Kastanienallee and Oderberger str. Highly recommend during the summer

Yelp
This beer garden is huge and worth a visit, if not to drink than for another German experience. The beer and food selection are not huge but the variety makes up for it. I enjoyed everything we ordered. This is good because trying to make decisions on what to drink and eat is a buzzkill. Good place for a getogether regardless of group size. It was also full of students, the after work crowd, and us tourists. Good times and I could see myself staying there for hours!

Ronald W.

Yelp
A local friend brought me to this place. I love this bear garden concept. They serve some typical simple German food and of course various German beers. Sausages were good and beer was nice too, all in this like kind of like inside courtyard social gathering spot.
google avatar

Yelp
I found this place via travel blog recommendations of this being the oldest Beer Garden in Berlin. Huge seating areas under the trees with tons of picnic tables as well as a connected restaurant. Really fun place to experience a beer garden with a good atmosphere and good beer. Got pretty crowded as the night went on, but with the open space it never got forbiddingly loud with was great.
google avatar

Erick T.

Yelp
Solid beers in a peaceful forest-like setting in the middle of East Berlin. Come here to hang out and laze the day away with friends. The place is really big and you're bound to find a seat. Lots of great eats all around the area as well. So, you could easily make an entire day of hanging out here and exploring the neighborhood.
google avatar

Yelp
This was a cool spot to hang out in the evening. The beer was good, outdoor space was nice, and there's plenty of seating. As others have mentioned the location feels like a bit of an oasis in a bustling urban area.

Yelp
Excellent food. The staff spoke English very well. We started with the potatoes and sausage soup. Delicious! Had the Weinerschnitzel, Meatballs, and beef goulash for entrees. Had the Berliner beer which very sweet. Service was friendly but a bit slow. Had the semolina flour and plum compote. The garten is split with the sit dow serve area and a serve yourself a ginormous hot dog. Will visit here again beer.

Yelp
The anticipation as we walked through the long outdoor entrance path of Prater Garten was high. Easter Sunday was upon us, and we were searching for our own resurrection. Would we find it here? WE DID! And we were able to happily celebrate with a few of our friends that met us there. A great place for groups and good company with plenty of tables and space to spread out. A beautiful sunny day shone on us as we all merrily drank sparkling wine and coffee. For beer is not the only beverage here. On top of this, we were able to enjoy one of the natural wonders of this world - the elusive and seasonal white asparagus paired with the fluffiest hollandaise you could snuggle with. All around a delicious experience and a perfect Easter for us.

Yelp
This place is a must visit in Berlin. They don't have many vegetarian options, but they serve legit German food as well as the best apple strudel I tried in Berlin. The atmosphere and abundant seating make this place one of a kind. There is also a wine selection for those who are not really into beer, and fast service.

Yelp
I was staying with friends that just moved to Prenzlauer Berg, but before that had done my research on where to eat and drink in Berlin. This was at the top of my list, from the Rick Steve's videos to just experiencing an official German Biergarten, especially the oldest. It was like 2 blocks from where they live. Located in a fun neighborhood, you'll easily see the entrance sign, walking into a small courtyard before you get to the main tables. I think there was a stage in one far corner, but come any afternoon for drinking, snacks, and second hand smoke. It is self service, so head up to the beer counter first, I went with a half liter of their top Pilsner. Then turn to your right and order some food. They have pretzels, meatballs, and I got a sausage mit brot, which is a tiny dinner roll so you can eat it with your hands. Then grab a seat on any bench. The weather was perfect when we went, some nice shade, fun people watching. Highly recommend this if visiting Germany whether for an afternoon pit stop or a fun evening.

Yelp
The wife and I are foodies so we follow where Anthony Bourdain eats on his various shows. This was one of the places he visited in the Berlin episode. During the winter, most people eat indoors since it is pretty cold outside. Since we were eating early, we came here without a reservation. Luckily there were still tables available as many of them were already reserved for parties coming in later. For dinner my wife ordered the goose, which is a traditional dish served during the holiday season and I ordered the schnitzel. It seemed liked this combination was very popular amongst couples as we saw a number of other people also order the same thing. I think between the two dishes the goose was by far the better one. Overall the food here is excellent, and reasonably priced, I believe it was about 60 euro for the food and drinks.

Yelp
A must visit in Berlin! I think it's one of the oldest beer gardens around and largest. It's great for a nice sunny day but there is also a restaurant inside if it's cold or late at night. Order the Beef and potatoes and Pilsner!

Yelp
My very FIRST biergarten experience! I enchanced my beer chugging skills at Prater Garten. In atypical, glorious Berlin sunshine, I was holding my half a liter Prater Pils grinning ear to ear like some tourist who just stumbled on the best find ever! Super casual, buzzing with a friendly crowd and lots of Euro languages being thrown about (of course, we had to sit right NEXT to the Italians!), everyone here just had a good time. The yellow communal seating were very inviting underneath the shade of the Chestnut trees, the bathrooms were clean and ordering at the window is fast and easy. Bring your family, your friends, invite your Tinder date (yup! he showed up and she was googly-gaga over him!) or was it just the beer buzz? either way, FUN times in Berlin!

Yelp
After about 17 hours roaming around Berlin, my newfound friends were hungry. I was ravenous -- which is why i practically sprinted here once her hotel clerk recommended it for an authentic German food experience. I knew we were steered in the right direction when the hostess looked pissed Americans were descending upon Prater Garten in a ravenous rage. I feel like we stumbled upon a local spot, which made the experience all the more enjoyable. Thank goodness I'd walked nearly five miles that day, because I downed my meatballs in no time flat. As much as I wanted to savor the salty, gravy-laden hunks of meat before my eyes..... I simply was too starved to let it get cool on my plate. From what I do remember scarfing down, though, it was so good. Typical German food served piping hot, with a side of delicious cold beer. Can't go wrong.
google avatar

Yelp
Ticks pretty much all the beer garden boxes & a good place to mingle with locals. You might though get a bit bored of the limited selection of beers. Pretzels were fine and the wurst dishes looked good although I didn't eat any.
google avatar

Mark C.

Yelp
Prater Garten is a beer garden! They also serve sausages! Hey I'm from New York I don't know the area but if your looking on google maps like I was it might look like the outskirts of town but it's not it was eleven pm and the neighborhood just kept getting livelier and livelier! This was a damn cool beer garden they serve beer and sausages!!
google avatar

Adam S.

Yelp
I liked this a lot Pros - Abundant seating - Nice environment - Reasonable pricing Cons - None, really This is a nice place to enjoy a beer or five with friends. When you've had too many, the U-Bahn is just around the corner. Places like this is why I keep coming back to Berlin.
google avatar

Lauren P.

Yelp
Prater Garten was a little bit off the beaten path, so it was actually quite quiet (and half empty) when we went one afternoon in August. We enjoyed a couple beers and had a whole table to ourselves to play cards and hang out. Plenty of people around us were eating, and the food looked quite good. Would recommend this as a beer garden away from all the tourists!
google avatar

Montana D.

Yelp
so good we came twice! BEEER IS AMAZING! food might be even better. Must try at least a brat and the pretzel with the sweet mustard. This mustard changed my life and I would've taken a vat home of it if I could. Fun atmosphere lots of outside seating! Good for families too!
google avatar

Andrew K.

Yelp
Best meal we had in Berlin. Good atmosphere and excellent service. Food menu was in English. Would love to return in the summer when the Garten is open. Great part of town to do a little wandering, too.
google avatar

Maree C.

Yelp
Really appreciate the schnitzel and meatballs dishes! Definitely very delicious. I love the beet salad, cucumber salad and potatoes as well. To top it off, the green beer (Berliner Weiss) is good to try but not something I would get again. Also, got the Apple strudel but was disappointed that it wasn't crispy enough but the vanilla ice cream is good with the tarty apple strudel. It's the oldest beer garden so it's worth to check it out but there are definitely more options as well. The beer garden is very spacious so quite easy to get seats (Came on Thursday night). The train is nearby so very convenient location as well. Food cost is a bit more pricey than the other German places I've been to but for all the foods and drinks it's worth to try it.
google avatar

Just The G.

Yelp
The first time I went to an authentic German beer graden was Stuttgart in 2000... And I don't like or drink beer so it wasn't all that impressed, but I like that Prater Garten offers a range of beverages. And it's true, it's quite beautiful at night, with the blossoming chestnut trees illuminated by strings of low lit bulbs. It's early in the season and still a little chilly at night, so it wasn't crowded, but it was still full enough to have an enjoyable vibe and, it's pretty cool to be in a space that has operated since 1837! Wow!
google avatar

Monica L.

Yelp
German food: check. beer: check. Atmosphere: check Outside seating: check. Say no more, this place is outstanding on a summer' s day and I could sit there for hours with my hefe weissen in the sun. If there's no sun, go inside and have a traditional German meal! Prenzlauer Berg is obligatory while in Berlin, and Prater too.
google avatar

Jeff Z.

Yelp
Nothing fancy here, just a rock solid bier garten with simple cheap eats and good beer. Mainly outdoor seating, so kind of weather dependent. Enjoy!
google avatar

Suzanne W.

Yelp
This was a very fun place. It was wet out so we sat inside. There was plenty of room but I could see as big as the bier garten was, that it probably gets pretty crazy here. We will have to return again. The food was great. We had the meatloaf, the goulash, the wiener schnitzel and the potato soup as well as a lot of beer. I found a great German red wine, 2012 Spätburgunder trocken, QbA, Axel Neiss, Pfalz (a German Pinot) that was lovely. I wish I could find it elsewhere.
google avatar

Sophie G.

Yelp
Essentially one of the best things I have ever tasted... I got the schnitzel and a beer and my tastebuds were jumping with joy. When I got the plate of schnitzel I thought there was no way I could finish it all but then once it was gone I wanted more. The restaurant is super cute too and is very typical German! All around a great experience :)
google avatar

Cristina S.

Yelp
Fun place, very casual atmosphere. The beer is good and there is a snack shack you can purchase a wurste or a Pretzel for a snack. Picnic tables that you share with others. Very touristy but a lot of locals too.
google avatar

Laura B.

Yelp
Classic good old Biergarten in Prenzlauer Berg. The pils is good, the staff is incredibly nice and helpful and the food is fine as well. Be there early in summer when it's hot as it gets very crowded. But I reckon that's part of its charm as well. Perfect spot for an after work beer and/or people watching. ;) Note for dog owners: It was bit much for my dog too handle even though the staff always brings around water and is giving him wink all the time. However that many people, kids, noise, and the tight space between the tabels etc. might turn out to be burdensome for some of our four-legged friends.
google avatar

Greg S.

Yelp
Natülich! Good German beer in a lovely setting! Just be careful not to order the "alkoholfrei"!
google avatar

Emile G.

Yelp
Prater was an enormous cash-only establishment, with hundreds of people sitting both inside and outside on the crisp Friday evening we came to dine. The food, beer, and coffee were all wonderful. The service was rather slow, but understandably so given the volume of patrons. To drink, I ordered a Prater lager schwarz, which is a dark rich lager without a sweet or nutty undertones. The menu featured an entire asparagus starter section which I did not have room in my stomach to try. Food: Potato soup w spicy sausage - very tasty. The sausage blended well with the rich potato base Wiener schnitzel (veal escalope) - also good. The cucumber salad that accompanied it was creamy but light and refreshing. Kassler ham - the highlight of the night. Not only was the meat flavorful and perfectly cooked, but it came with a mix of mashed potatoes, sauerkraut, and a malt beer sauce that had me licking the plate clean by the end. It was the best meal I had in Berlin and I would highly recommend all to go, from locals to tourists.
google avatar

Nikki R.

Yelp
Great place to go with friends! I spent a few days in Berlin during a Europe trip, and we were told to check this place out for an authentic beer garden - I could not have been happier with the experience. Typical food - bratwurst, potato salad, meatloaf, etc. and a wide range of beer options. We all definitely enjoyed trying some German specialities! We went on a Saturday and the place wasn't terribly busy, probably because it's very open and has a lot of space. Definitely would recommend, especially for any tourists wanting a great beer garden experience!
google avatar

Lee Z.

Yelp
I would love to write a really lenghy review telling you just how great Prater Garten is,but any review I write would pale in comparison to that written by my good lady wife Ange Z. So read that instead. What I will say though is if you are planning on visiting Berlin then you would be a fool not to eat at this awesome place!!
google avatar

Tyler L.

Yelp
One of Berlin's greatest contributions to the world culinary scene is the strange beer garden in an unexpected place. Prater Beer Garden occupies an expansive space in what feels like it could be the grounds of a carnival. There's even a stage for performances. There's a large beer garden area that primarily focusses on beer of course, though also has stands for food, and an actual restaurant with some fantastic German classics. With plenty of outdoor seating, it was a great place to soak up the sunset with some craft German beer and classic meat forward dishes.
google avatar

Louis W.

Yelp
Prater Garten is a tranquil lush park setting in busy east Berlin. Huge trees and lots of green space make for an inspiring lunch or dinner. The beers are served in huge steins and the food is pretty simple and traditional, Roast, Wurst, mash, and Sour kraut. Im assuming its a bit of a tourist spot considering the basic menu, but its done very well and fulfilled my desire for a traditional German experience. Their sour kraut is still the best ive had!
google avatar

Charles S.

Yelp
Excellent food, service and beer. Duck was delicious. Zander fish good. Very pleasant meal for 2 older Americans. We could (should) have split the meal...portions were large. Interesting beers - not craft beers... traditional German beers. People of all ages eating here. They do accept credit cards, btw.
google avatar

Yelp
This came on recommendation from an American yelper spending their time in Berlin and boy was I not disappointed! I came during this past month in the freezing and bitter cold winter season, so obviously there wasn't any outdoor seating but the indoor space was huge, romantically lit, and warm. Our server was very sweet and kind, open to giving us recommendations on the menu and other German specialties. We ended up sharing the Cheese Spätzle (egg noodles) with leaf spinach, fried onions and a side salad, a braised beef in vinegar with potatoes and cabbage, and a Apple strudel with raisins, nuts and hot vanilla sauce! The Cheese Spätzle was so delicious, the egg noodle was done so well, not soggy at all - I would eat that again everyday. The braised beef was so so tender. I personally enjoyed the vinegar hint to the beef, I thought the dish was extremely well done. The dessert was alright in my opinion, a nice end to the meal but not the best apple strudel I've ever had before. Overall prices are great for the quality, the food is made to order so it tasted fresh and absolutely divine. I am always irritated that I have to pay for water in Europe, but this place made up for it with the food!! If I ever return to Berlin, I will most definitely come back to Prater Garden for a meal or some schnitzel.
google avatar

Katie F.

Yelp
We visited Prater Garten to get a bratwurst but unfortunately did not realize that there are restaurant and take away portions for the Biergarten until we had already ordered our drinks. The menu is extremely overpriced. We paid €27,50 for asparagus, 4 small potatoes and Weinerschnitzel. The asparagus tasted like water and was saturated in butter, which we were assured would come on the side. The schnitzel was bland, but palatable with a generous amount of ketchup. The potato/sausage soup was the only redeeming quality of the meal, and not quite as overpriced as the plate. We were very excited to try to delicious looking apfelstrudel, but once again, extremely disappointed in the flavor and price, €9,00. The strudel was bland, not sweet, and after a few sample bites, we had no desire to eat more. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for dinner, however, the outside Biergarten is a nice environment to enjoy a beverage if you are able to handle the excessive amount of smoking.

Yelp
It's been years since I've been to a proper beer garden (downsides of living in Glasgow) and so this one was just perfect. We had been at Mauerpark which is about a 10 minute walk away and headed here for more drinks. It's easy to find off Kastanienallee with a massive sign so you shouldn't be able to miss it. It wasn't as busy as I expected for a sunny weekend and there were heaps of seats. I don't think there was table service - you just headed up to the bar to order. We got beer, wine and pretzels and enjoyed the sunshine. It's very family friendly and it was so nice just to be able to chill outside. There are nice loos too with an attendant. Did the place used to have a swimming pool? It seems like it from the diving boards but maybe we just got confused! There's also a restaurant - we just had pretzels which were great, apparently the restaurant isn't worth trying out. All up, this place was super cool and I'd definitely recommend visiting on a nice day.
google avatar

Jonah K.

Yelp
One of the top 2 or 3 outdoor drinking spots. They are open until 1am or so on the weekends. Great beer selection, nice staff, good prices. Really cool spot to check out.

Wes M.

Yelp
For beer: 4.5. For food: 3.0. For service: 1.0. Woefully understaffed for the food counter. Took forever to work through a line of patrons waiting for food and the counter staff was pushy and rude. We came at about 19:45, and they were low on sausages, had no kraut and had no pasta for our one vegetarian guest. Just corn, a pretzel, or potato salad. Failed to ring up the potato salad and got angry when I asked him about it again. The food we got was good. But the service was dismal. Hire better staff, and manage your food better. Staff at beer counter was far more efficient, faster, and friendlier.

Yelp
For my first visit here, I expected more to this place, especially since I'd heard so many good things. But maybe it's my fault for going during the WM. First, the good. There is a lot of seating, the area is expansive and welcoming, and it really is the perfect spot to drink a beer on a warm summer day while being lazy and catching up with friends. Now, the bad. During the WM, they check your bags, and I knew this, so I purposely made sure not to have any food or drinks. I did have my EMPTY Nalgene, and they wouldn't let me in with it, instead suggesting I leave it in the boxes to the side. No dude, not doing that. Luckily a friend lives next door and I could leave it in her flat. Then you get in, and the beer is pretty expensive for Berlin. €3.50 for the .4l Pils or Schwarzbier, €4 for the Hefeweizen. Plus some bottled beers and other drinks. Oh, and if you are buzzing hard and want to drink water to sober up a bit and curb an impending hangover, lucky you, you can buy "table water" from them at €3 for .4l. That's 50 cents cheaper than a beer for carbonated water. I didn't even bother asking about tap water, because a friend told me they charge for that too. Eff that noise--I filled my empty beer cup up with tap water from the bathroom because charging for tap water is not cool. There's also food available, but it's all meat and cheese (vegans take note). I think the only things I could have eaten were almonds, olives, or a pickle. This was not that big of a bother, except that I was hoping that if you have six different kinds of meat, maybe there would be fries. So my hopes were dashed, but I had checked the menu online ahead of time, so I knew I would be SOL. Finally they had a lot of TVs, which was awesome, but one was set up so that there was a massive glare on it for half the game. It is what it is, but I would have thought that working at a beer garden and expecting the masses to come out for a game, they would have maybe figured out by now where to put a TV so that people could actually see what's going on... never mind the technical difficulties (like when the TV just turned off mid-game). Anyway, not a bad spot to grab a beer in the sun, but don't spend all your money in one place (this place), because your euro won't go very far.
google avatar

Kara S.

Yelp
This was a traditional and delightful beer garden to spend a lazy afternoon. I heard from people I met that the food was delicious, but a little on the pricey side for a beer garden. I would say due to how long this place has been around, it's a must stop if you're out that way in Berlin!
google avatar

Brski B.

Yelp
We shared the Kassler ham with malt beer sauce, sauerkraut, and mashed potatoes. The ham tasted like Jacques Pepin's ham steak (a good thing), the potatoes were Joel-Robuchon-butter-heavy (a good thing), and the kraut was as good as any we ever had (it was sweetened by what we believed to be apple). Fun space. Satisfying food.
