The Hottest New Bakeries Around Boston

"The team behind popular South End spots Petit Robert Bistro and Marseille, as well as Kendall Square restaurant Batifol, might be Boston’s most prolific French restaurant group. New to the operation is PRB Boulangerie, a string of three bakeries and cafes sprinkled around the city. Fill your pockets with chocolate croissants and eclairs, but also don’t miss the excellent pain suisse, with layers of sweet brioche dough wrapped around vanilla custard and chocolate chips. A full breakfast and lunch menu is also available at the cafes. There are PRB locations in Somerville, the South End, and Kendall Square." - Erika Adams

This is a very spacious and quaint cafe. We came around 2pm on a Sunday and there were a lot of open tables. We got a couple of sandwiches and a soup. The boeuf bourguinon sandwich was excellent -- the meat and mushrooms were tender and covered in an unctuous sauce, with a great kick from the mustard. I would definitely get this again. It was decadent in all the best ways. The bread was not the best, but it was masked by the amazing filling. The Parisian ham and cheese sandwich was not as good, mainly because the bread was quite disappointing. It was very soft and a bit floury. I would've preferred a crustier bread with more structure. The filling was fine, and I liked the pickle, but I would've liked more ham as well. Praline's version of this sandwich is way better, mostly because of the bread. We also got the French onion soup ($10), which my husband, a French onion soup hater, loved. It has a nice crusty cheese top and was a bit sweet. Overall the boeuf bourguinon sandwich was excellent, but the sandwich bread was not great. I'd come back for that one sandwich, though!

Tried the new brunch menu and had a great time. Our server, Lucas, was a superstar. The breakfast sandwich needs a little extra something - like some mustard or a chutney. But overall a really nice relaxing place to grab brunch and a coffee ☕

I love Cafe Saint-Germain and am lucky enough to live around the corner. I've never had a disappointing bite of food and their coffee is great. I did remove one star as a was a bit disappointed with allergy safety the other day. I have a nut allergy (not severe) so a kitchen also serving nuts is not an issue for me as long as some precautions are taken to avoid cross contamination. A couple years ago, when this place first opened as Boulangerie I was thrilled when the pastry chef told me it would be safe for me to eat the chocolate croissants. At the time, the chocolate croissants were displayed on a different level than the almond croissants or with a different pastry separating them. Now I'm disappointed to see that the chocolate and almond croissants are displayed next to each other and touching on the counter, with almonds sometimes scattered around the counter. The staff member working also informed me that they're carried to the counter on a shared tray in the mornings too. I would really appreciate if the pastries containing almonds could be displayed on a tray or something on a different level from the rest. I would also love if they could be carried to the display on a separate tray.

The truffle fries portion is big, but truffle oil is not as generous as you can smell or taste at every single fries, maybe balance between too overwhelmed. Main i ordered Coq Au Vin, the meat came a bit dry, but overall taste good. The dessert is good! Slight waiting time, maybe due to the big group.

Good food. Their pastries are good, although slightly overpriced. Went for dinner. All dishes were very good. They have a limited menu which they execute well. Kids had plain pasta, but they don't have a specific kid's menu.

The food was wonderful! They had a French BBQ buffet celebrating Bastille Day when we were there. The food was great and the cocktails wonderful! The place is adorable too and everyone was friendly. We can't wait to go back!

You should Definitely try it it you’re into French pastry. This is a relatively new bakery with excellent quality French pastry. I have not yet tried their bread as I bike around this area but based on the quality of pastry I’d bet it’s top quality too. UPDATE on bread: I tried it on two separate occasions. I think it is too salty. They have a espresso machine and their espresso is what you can find in a cafe in business district of Milan. However, there is an excellent coffeeshop that roast their coffee steps away where you can grab single origin beans and light roast coffee etc.

Very good quality baked goods. There is some seating here and some cold pre packed meals. Staff are friendly. I would highly recommend the Nutella babka and pan au chocolat. The apricot pastry is okay. It’s not too crowded on weekends. Although in Somerville, it’s fairly close to Harvard. This bakery is one of the best in the area.
