"Upscale dining in California’s capital city has an unspoken mandate in farm-to-fork sophistication at this point, no? It’s a welcome given, and Prelude is no exception. But where many restaurants hew to flavor pairings that border on the cliché, this swanky Midtown destination, right across the street from the Capitol, takes things a step further, aims to surprise. There, the Brussels sprouts small plate is studded with pork belly instead of the usual bacon, and dressed with a puckering cranberry compote and a dash of apple cider vinegar. And how often does one get to enjoy the warming depth of an arrabbiata with delicate Dungeness crab? Not to mention dark chocolate mole — as a side dish. Prelude is a celebration of creativity expressed within convention, a fine way to kick off an evening." - Tamerra Griffin

We came here for lunch for my mother-in-law’s birthday. The place is really nice. The vibes are really cool and the view is beautiful. The staff was very nice. They decorated for my mother-in-law’s birthday with a cute table set up. A little flower arrangement with a happy birthday sign when we arrived. We sat down and our server came over and took our drink orders, she was very helpful in telling us which ones to order. She also made a custom drink for my mother-in-law. We gave our food order and enjoyed our drinks while waiting. After some time, our food came out. Very underwhelming. We ordered a burger, two salads ,and a pasta dish. The burger was the only one worth the money. The Caesar salad was wilted and brown, very bland, and tasted like a bagged salad. The chicken was tasty though. The Mediterranean Salad was overdressed and bland as well. The “prawns” were just shrimp, but we’re also tasty. The pasta dish was a mess. The sauce was watered down. The green beans were hard, and the noodles were not dressed. Despite all the sauce, this was also bland. The only reason we did not send our dishes back was because we had just driven two hours from the Bay Area and were very hungry. Since it had taken a little while to get the food in the first place, we did not want to risk having to wait any longer to eat and get hangry. We boxed up our plentiful leftovers to give to someone on the street. Our server brought out two chocolate truffles for the birthday girl with a candle, which was very sweet. The service for the lunch menu was the only redeeming quality they were great overall we probably would not come back.

I went to this restaurant recently while visiting the area and I really enjoyed the experience. The highlight of my visit was definitely the wait staff; they were friendly and attentive, and even allowed me to stay after they closed for lunch. I did not feel rushed into eating quickly at all, which I really appreciated. I ordered the House Ground Angus Burger and fries, which were delicious. I also ordered a side of grilled apricots, which were just okay. Nothing exceptional there. But the fries that came with the burger were so good that (for me) they made up for the grilled apricots. Overall, this is a good restaurant with fair pricing (not super expensive, but not cheap either!) and excellent service. I would definitely stop by here again if I was traveling in the area.

I had the beet salad (a little too much vinegar in the dressing), my husband had the seasonal squash soup- delicious. We split the steak & au gratin potatoes. Ashley, our waitress split the meal for us as shown in the pic.

Exceptional dining experience at Prelude this evening. Inside, the restaurant has an elevated and modern vibe. The new menu has duck fat seared scallops which are a must try. The scallops were perfectly cooked. The pumpkin puree was a nice contrast, and the spicy pepitas gave the dish the perfect amount of crunch. Finished the meal with the flourless chocolate cake. It wasn’t too sweet, and the sourness from the berries worked well with the slice. Service was quick and efficient as well. I will visit again the next time I’m in Sacramento.

A cute and nice spot. The food was great, especially the baked triple cream brie. The filet mignon was good, liked the potatoes.

Where to begin! It was a special occasion and I chose to bring my visitor (a chef from TX) to what I thought was going to impress her. I made arrangements prior to coming and confirmed with the front of the house when I arrived with a simple request. Please ask the chef if he or she could say hello or prepare anything special as a gesture. They confirmed the request but nothing was offered and no effort made! Then the service. Wait staff barely checked the table and had to be flagged for everything. Finally drinks arrived. Unfortunately this was the best part of the meal. I must say though the Earl grey cocktail was divine!! For an app I ordered the fried ravioli which tasted more like a stale tortilla pizza roll. The “garnish” however was expertly put together and was delicious! The entrees came super late, my side was forgotten and the pork chop which I ordered medium rare was so overcooked and dry I had to soak it in the sauce that came with the fingerlings. Both the entrees were room temp at best and her portion for the short rib consisted of 1 small rib. Entrees were terribly cooked, unbalanced in flavor and overall disappointing. The atmosphere also felt more like a hotel restaurant than fine dining. I never leave reviews or feedback but this was unacceptable for a kitchen that claims to be “fine dining”. I did leave a nice tip for the best drink of my life though.
