"Mad for matcha? Matcha Cafe Maiko, a Troy dessert shop dedicated to matcha ice cream and drinks, is a great place to get a fix. The cafe, an outpost of the Hawaii chain, opened at the start of the pandemic with an Instagram-worthy menu of soft-serve cones, parfaits, tea, and lattes that will leave followers green with envy. The matcha, a naturally bright-green powder made from pulverized green tea leaves, is sourced from Uji, a city on the southern outskirts of Kyoto, Japan. The mecca of matcha, Uji was one of the first places in Japan to cultivate green tea, some of the best in the world. Along with matcha, the cafe serves hojicha (roasted green tea), and vanilla, strawberry, or ube-taro soft serve, made from purple yams. Mostly everything is made in house, including the ice cream, waffle cones, sponge cakes, and the adzuki bean toppings. The cafe’s creamy creations can be topped with a paper-thin layer of edible 23.75-karat gold for an additional $3.50. Sound gimmicky? Eating gold leaf is a longstanding tradition in Japan. And don’t worry. It’s not only tasteless, but it passes through without being absorbed." - Monica Williams

The cream matcha latte is so yummy here. You can really tell that they use high quality matcha! The new renovations are really nice and the owner was helping make drinks and talking to the customers today. The service is always friendly. I have to try the espresso drinks next ☺️ 1/8/2024 Update: I just tried the Iced Hojicha Latte!! It might be my new fave. It has a deeper, nuttier flavor and is less sweet then matcha. Good recommendation for me from the barista

Google
From the outside, this cafe seems unassuming, aside from its alluring sign. The winter frost covered the windows. Fortunately, the neon "Open" sign affirmed its occupancy. What surprised me was how warm and cozy the atmosphere was, despite the chill inside and out. While I wished it was warmer inside, I enjoyed how long my Maiko Special stayed solid at a table by the window. The matcha ice cream was bitter yet refreshing as the coldness overtook the flavor of it and the red beans. There was a welcomed contrast with the rice crisps mixed in with the bean layer. I especially loved the flavor and texture combinations between the mochi balls, sweet and lemony macroon, and the bitter matcha! While I haven't finished my medium cup yet, nor the clear jellies at the bottom, I would definitely come back and order this again. This is a lovely spot to sit, work on my laptop or read, and order something from the handsome and muscular cashier.

Google
SO GOOD!!! the taiyaki (cheese, ube, chocolate) was piping hot and fresh (recommend the cheese). the maiko special was the perfect combination of chewy, crunchy, and soft (i ordered it without agar jelly). the renovations are lovely and make it the perfect location for a late night snack, date, or study spot. it was mwah.

Google
After the remodeling the place looks great. However, for a place whose whole brand is matcha, the matcha latte quality was embarrassingly bad for the price point. While the soft serve was great, the strawberry matcha was unmixed with large chunks of matcha at the bottom. I understand with a high volume of customers speed is important, however, that isn’t an excuse for unmixed matcha.

Google
Came here for the matcha latte and it was pretty decent not necessarily the best I’ve had before. I got the iced strawberry matcha latte and it was a very subtle amount of strawberry and the matcha itself was quite strong.

Google
Very nice atmosphere! I love the Korean Bakery addition. Seriously Premier food and Matcha! The staff is very nice and courteous! A great place to go for a date, homework or just to enjoy a hot beverage to get out the cold! Great for summer time cold drinks too! The hot drink packaging is SOOO cute and thoughtful! Good job you guys!!

Google
Premium Matcha is a fantastic spot to grab dessert, offering not only delicious treats but also an inviting atmosphere that’s perfect for relaxing or catching up with friends. The team—Jacob, Jonathan, and Ben—went above and beyond to provide exceptional service, making the experience even better. Highly recommend this place for anyone looking to satisfy their sweet tooth in style! Great job on your second day Jonathon. Thanks Jacob for helping us with recommendations.

The remodeling is so modern and clean! Cute little aesthetic place for pictures and also great deserts!

Yelp
Not a stranger to Matcha Cafe Maiko-- I've tried their Las Vegas, San Francisco, Irvine, and Rowland Heights locations, so you could say I'm a fan! This place offers great quality matcha ice cream. I happened to be visiting and wanted an Asian dessert, so I stopped by. I like getting their matcha parfait, which has warabi mochi. (Hojicha is my favorite flavor, but it tends to have a strong caffeine flavor.) Would recommend, especially for those who aren't familiar with matcha. This location seems to have sweeter matcha ice cream than that of other places I tried, but I get it. For those who want to try other flavors, they offer vanilla and ube as well.

Jann D.

Yelp
Came back to see the renovated place and read a Google review that the place lost its uniqueness and I would agree. I was sad to see the chalkboard wall and big mirror near the bathroom was gone as mentioned in my first review. The place looks just like every other aesthetic coffee place now but the quality of everything is still the same. Hence all the matcha lovers are back, but that made the place busier and the area did not get bigger so all the seats were taken. Some bigger groups pulled chairs from the tables. I tried hojicha for the first time particularly the Oreo Hojicha Frappe. Similar to matcha it definitely has an acquired taste because I liked it but my friend did not. Overall I removed a star but will continue to try their food/drinks.

Rebecca M.

Yelp
5/5 simply because they offer Ube soft serve and I've been looking for some for years! The pricing is a tad high for soft serve but the portions are large. There is a lot of seating here and it was clean, I'll be back.

Sohaib L.

Yelp
Everything was excellent and wow! The service was great, very helpful staff. The food was near perfect, very flavourful and amazingly presentation. the taiyaki was good but didn't wow me as much as other item. The place is super clean, well decorated and definitely a nice spot to hang out

Elizabeth E.

Yelp
An absolute must have! We came for ice cream and were not disappointed! I got an ube and matcha soft serve- both so delicious. My friend got a Maiko special and really enjoyed it. We both got mediums & it so much ice cream, well worth the price! The staff were incredibly friendly and so helpful- they answered all our questions and the service was very quick. The interior is super cozy too. We will be back again!

Aisha S.

Yelp
Have been going to cafe maiko since before the renovations. A local favorite spot for high school kids to young adults to hang out with their friends. Can't speak for the Matcha, but I enjoy their taiyaki and ube taro soft serve (though I wouldn't call it extraordinary you know?). Down side is that there's not that much seating and other than change the aesthetics, the renovation they were closed for didn't seem to add any additional seating space. I paid $6.50 for a soft serve which seems a little expensive, but the serving size was pretty good for the price and it's a specialty flavor. One piece of feedback I'd have for them is for them to stay open later on the weekends if they can as I think even more people would come. Otherwise, solid place to chill and I'm always down to go here if it's suggested to me!

Sarah L.

Yelp
Perfect place to get your matcha fix in Rochester! I loved all the flavors of soft serve. Not too sweet! Lots of menu options and seating inside, it can get pretty crowded on a chilly winter night. Minus one star because it's lacking in consistency - some ice creams were bigger than others depending on the server. And the mochi balls are really small for paying 50 cents each.

Mk Y.

Yelp
Picked up a banana pudding matcha today. There could definitely be more banana pudding in there.

Sam L.

Yelp
The ambiance and service is perfect for enjoying a sweet treat. I tried the all the soft serve flavors: ube taro soft serve with mochi, vanilla, matcha, and Hokkaido milk ice cream. Each flavor was rich and creamy. My only small gripe was that I wished there were more than two mochi balls for 50 cents. Overall, a great spot for dessert and will definitely be back!

Cindy P.

Yelp
For all you matcha lovers, this is the spot to go! Last time I came to detroit to visit a friend they recommended to try this spot out. WOW, I wish they had this in Minnesota. I've been on a matcha kick recently, so just thinking about this makes me want to go back. I got the matcha special. I would say this is the best choice to choose from. It contains layers of matcha ice cream, matcha chiffon, chestnuts and shiratama mochi. Every bite is so different with each layer but also goes perfectly together. It is a pretty big portion so I would share with a friend and try out other things from the menu! I would say this matcha cafe is comparable to the ones I had on my recent trip to Japan. Which is crazy to think about! Everyone needs to try this place out!

Albert T.

Yelp
I've been to a couple of Premium Matcha Cafe Maiko locations throughout the US and have found them to be pretty consistent in quality. Their ice cream is always delicious and this location is no different. On our last visit over the weekend, we got: Cup, Matcha and Thai Tea ($5.50) - We originally wanted the Ube-Taro and Thai Tea swirl, but their Ube-Taro dispenser wasn't working. Instead, we got the Thai Tea with Matcha on top. The Matcha flavor is fantastic, very dense grassy, slightly bitter matcha flavor with a nice sweetness. The Thai Tea, which is their current seasonal flavor, has a rich roasted, smoky flavor almost reminiscent of wok hei. The ice cream in general is rich and decadent, with a thickness and density more akin to a good frozen custard than the typical light and airy soft serve. We came here right when they were receiving an delivery of dairy products. Let's just say, they use a lot of milk and surprisingly cream cheese. No wonder why the ice cream is so rich! Premium Matcha Cafe Maiko is pretty far away from us, but we usually drop in whenever we are up in Troy. I definitely recommend it, at least for the ice cream!

Michael T.

Yelp
I don't know how they do it, but it is hands down the best matcha. Matcha tea, Matcha latte, Matcha ice cream. Can combine these if you desire. Not overtly sweet. I strongly suggest you combine ice cream and tea to make a float. Next time we will get a larger size, it was that good. Service was mediocre. The people working there did not seem very interested in their product. They also weren't very interested in explaining their menu. They did not seem well trained.

Aliya S.

Yelp
Great place to chill and chat with friends. They have games and plenty of seating. The service was okay. They only had matcha and ube flavors when I went, but I like those flavors anyways! It was delicious and I wish there were more locations.

Shanna C.

Yelp
I love that there is a soft serve place dedicated to matcha! While the matcha is always delicious, what I really enjoy are the ube-taro and black sesame (seasonal). The soft serve here is not too sweet, and I love that you can sample the flavors before committing to one. There are tables in the seating area so it's a fun place to hang out or to get work done.

Jeongmin H.

Yelp
This is a cute matcha themed cafe and I liked how they have a bunch of board games in the back! For all the serious matcha lovers out there, I'd recommend their shaved ice over their soft serve - the soft serve was a little too sweet for my liking whereas the shaved ice had a richer matcha flavor.

Anna M.

Yelp
my go-to sweet treat in the troy area I bring visitors from out of town here. I get the matcha ice cream in a cup, sometimes swirl. Get the mochi candy!

A C.

Yelp
Absolutely would come back here again & again. Their shakerato and matcha drinks are to die for! Best quality matcha I've ever had. They also have great pastries if you're looking for a bite to eat! The new renovations definitely elevated the atmosphere, making it feel very open and inviting. The staff was also super helpful and friendly. :)

Vy N.

Yelp
The matcha soft serve is absolutely delicious, just how I like my matcha to taste. It's not too sweet and you can still taste the matcha. There's a good amount of seating inside for you to sit inside and hang out with your friends.

Neona W.

Yelp
Great service! We had a huge party come in and had several orders, with several people asking for samples. The cashier was super patient and efficient. I ordered a matcha soft serve. The matcha flavor is definitely strong enough and the texture of the soft serve was perfect. My sister got the taro and black sesame swirl soft serve. The taro flavor was so delicious, but I thought it kind of overpowered the black sesame. My cousin ordered the taiyaki and we knew it was take a while. However, when we finally got the order, it was pretty burnt. We didn't bring it up because we knew they were super busy. So I would definitely recommend trying the soft serve. The flavors are delicious and I think they rotate one flavor too.

Alyssa S.

Yelp
Never disappoints. The matcha ice cream is delicious. You have the option to get a twist of matcha and vanilla as well.

Wen C.

Yelp
I would be obese if I lived closer to here. This is an amazing ice cream shop that serves treats from Japan. The matcha they use is high quality with a great grassy, fragrant taste and it's not too sweet so you can really savor the complex flavors. They also have limited edition flavors to keep you coming back for more. I really enjoyed their soft serve and I would come back for their parfaits and other offerings. I found the prices to be reasonable especially for the quality. They also have a stamp card so the more you buy the more you save!

Sweenie O.

Yelp
I love the matcha late and frappe with an extra swirl of their Hokkaido milk! The service was great but they should've names or numbers on the orders so that customers don't get confused on taking the orders on the counter(if its full house) Ambiance is not instagram worthy but that doesnt affect my 5 star review

Your M.

Yelp
Literally the best matcha I've ever had in Michigan, and everyone is very friendly! I come here all the time

Talon A.

Yelp
I love this take on soft serve and classic Japanese flavors! I got the Ube and Matcha swirl with a cake chunk on the side. There are a lot of different toppings to choose from and you can really get fancy with it. But I kept it simple this time. They usually have Ube, matcha and vanilla and rotate a season flavor once a month I believe. Black sesame, cookie butter and Sakura are some of the flavors I've seen since going there. Service is really great and they usually make the taiyaki (a waffle like fish shaped treat) fresh if you order it. I didn't get one this time but I usually get one and have it filled with Nutella. The decore is simple and cute inside. There a chalkboard in the back that's filled with customer doodles. It's usually full whenever I go. Pretty clean and lots of seating available. Every who works there is always super sweet too.

Yulee K.

Yelp
The matcha ice cream was so creamy and delicious! Wish I got to try other things on the menu but I heard this was their most popular. Seating inside is spacious and very nicely decorated.

Paige K.

Yelp
Best thing about this place is their food and selection of menu options. The ambiance definitely could be better, perhaps more natural lighting if possible. Cashier's friendliness was mediocre and definitely could have been better. Soft serve was pretty decent! I would return with friends or recommend them here for matcha/Ube needs.

Sophie R.

Yelp
Super cute atmosphere and very yummy food. I've tried their taro and vanilla ice cream. Both were sweet and a nice treat. This is the only place near me where I could find taiyaki and it was great! I got Nutella and my friends got red bean which they loved. Definitely recommend this place!

Maxwell L.

Yelp
I know this is a chain, but here in the greater DET area, we don't get many of the typical Asian amenities (it's changing for sure!). Tried the matcha float and the matcha latte, and they were both delicious fares. With its claw machines and chalk wall, it's a nicely interactive space. Service was good and it didn't take too long to get our orders. Solid establishment!

Seon-Young R.

Yelp
Tasty macha drinks and ice creams for reasonable prices. Server is very kind. I would recommend this place.

Drew P.

Yelp
As this places! Some of the best tasting ice cream and drinks. It's only been a day and I'm craving it again.

Sydney I.

Yelp
I've been on the hunt for a great matcha other than being homemade & this spot has it all. Their matcha lattes are perfect and certainly are high quality. Besides that their ube flavored items are my favorite!! The ube soft serve & ube taiyaki are desserts I will literally be dreaming about for months lol. The worker was extremely nice & the vibes felt very authentic.

Brittany L.

Yelp
The ice cream was really runny and it was seriously expensive just because it's Matcha and little drab inside. I was expecting more for a place who offers Gold Leaf Matcha, but it was just eh.

laqom s.

Yelp
Really good matcha products. the service is quick and the restaurant has a nice ambiance.

Saphace A.

Yelp
Matcha ice cream?! Yeah!! Lots of people in here sitting and coming in and out. I got the matcha mixed with vanilla. So so good! Didn't even have a stomach ache from the dairy. My sister tried iced hojicha with matcha ice cream on top. Looked delicious! My older sis got ube mixed with passion fruit. Wow! That was amazing too!! What a hidden gem here!! I'll have to come back again!! YAY!

Sally C.

Yelp
Great place for a treat! The matcha ice cream and the iced matcha latte were both fantastic. We will be back! Games, printer, lots of seating inside.

Amanda L.

Yelp
If you love all things matcha, you will DEFINITELY love this place! I am an absolute matcha enthusiast and the quality here is so superb. You can get matcha in every possible way you might crave! For me, I got a matcha tea with a whole thing of matcha soft serve sitting inside as well and it was just heaven! I had such a tough time deciding on what to even get from their menu because there are SO many things I wanted to try here. You best know I will be coming back soon because the matcha flavors across the board in what I ordered were so strong and so GOOD. Next time, I'll definitely stop by to actually eat inside, because there are a lot of sit-down, eat-immediately type of matcha dishes here that look super interesting. Because the time I went, I was just trying to pick something up, I couldn't get too crazy and fun with my ordering. I highly recommend in general that when you come here, you dine in. My matcha tea and soft serve started melting SO quickly as soon as I left that I had to quickly drink and eat a bunch before I could even get into my car without risking spillage everywhere. Dine-in is definitely the way to go and I can't wait to come back! :)

Jean M.

Yelp
This place has been on my radar for a bit and I finally checked it out. I started with a latte, matcha chocolate cream and then still wasn't completely satisfied so I then ordered a soft serve ice cream, mix of vanilla and matcha which was good too. I have to say their large drink is more like a medium tho. Their prices could be a little but less as I think they are a bit expensive for what you get. The guy behind the counter was pleasant and helpful! It's cute inside too. I'd definitely come back despite the slightly higher prices as the flavors were good (they do not run sweet which is either good or bad depending on your preference), and you can't find matcha just anywhere! I'd probably give them a 4.5, but I'm rounding up due to the nice guy behind the counter. They also have a punch card for frequent visits which is nice!

Munzer R.

Yelp
I'm a big fan of the chocolate matcha latte they have there, the ice cream is really good too!

Ailun H.

Yelp
This place is pretty expensive ($5.83 after tax for a cone) but I come here to treat myself after a long week. My personal favorite is their matcha ice cream on a chocolate cone (there are different types of cone you can get here!!) They had a rotating flavor, black sesame ice cream, that I really liked but I haven't seen that in awhile. Overall, love that they had/have a hojicha flavor and currently have an ube one!

Lindsay H.

Yelp
Yummy yummy yummy! Ordered the Maiko Special and it did not disappoint! Love the atmosphere in the café with the greenery, upbeat music (it was a Filipino song at the time), and games to play while eating/drinking (my family and I played connect 4!).

Chris P.

Yelp
Ube flavor on their soft serve ice cream is spot on! Nice consistency and it tasted similar to a famous Filipino ice cream brand, Selecta.

Sidney L.

Yelp
I was so excited to try this Matcha ice cream but turned out it was a disappointing . The young Asian lady served us at the counter was not too nice and welcoming. She was in the back when we walked in and there's no other customers. She gave us a very annoying look like why you come in. We ordered two Matcha ice cream in the cup but she gave us very little ice cream. She actually didn't know how to use the machine and need to ask someone come out from the back and help. And my sister said the matcha ice cream didn't taste the same specially the texture. She also heard from someone that they have a new owner. Hopefully, the new owner will put someone more friendly and knowledgeable out front. I'm just here visiting but definitely won't go back. They also lost my sister as a future customer.

Stacy K.

Yelp
Really fun place! This cafe was on my summer food quest list and I saw a lot of hubbub on yelp, but then I started to see a bunch of videos and pictures surface on YouTube and Instagram from the West Coast. That's when I realized this was not a stand alone shop in Michigan. Interesting fact, this is a franchise from Hawaii. They source their matcha from Japan to get that authentic earthy flavor. Plus, according to the employees, this is the only location in the Midwest. So, I am happy to see such a unique find here in our area. We tried a few different ice creams. I had the Maiko special with ube taro ice cream and match ice cream. I also added the taiyaki fish cone. I love the smooth ube ice cream and the earthy matcha flavor. The mochi was nice and chewy. The macaron was absolutely delicious. I love the beans and the crunch of the corn flakes. The cake pieces were wonderful. All around a good introductory order to start with if you visit. One child got the vanilla/ matcha twist with cake, mochi, and a vanilla waffle cone. The other got an ube/ sea cream combo with cake and a taiyaki. They both loved it. The kids enjoyed looking at the walls covered with customer animation. And one of them loves the tikis placed around the room. Personally I would like to come back and try some of the drinks or other combinations. I liked their topping choices. And there were so many drink combinations, I am not even sure what to get next, but we hope to be back soon.

Iza N.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious! Highly recommend. Me and my husband shared the large size. It was around $10 dollars. The matcha flavour is nice and the kidney bean jelly and corn flares with the cake just make it that much more special. Nice people working at the register too!

Cat P.

Yelp
Aw, I really wanted to like this place. I was super excited to find an Asian dessert cafe open late so my bf and I drove 40 minutes to get ourselves a sweet treat. Unfortunately, the female cashier on Saturday night is just rude and weird. We asked basic questions about the menu, but she was just uncomfortably rude. Like go home if you're not feeling it. Sheeeeesh She recommended a matcha latte as their top menu item, which was absolutely not good? Starbucks matcha lattes have better depth and flavor lol??? Idk maybe it was an off night for her, but I doubt I'll be back to try again.

Nicole E.

Yelp
It's in the same shopping plaza as Hanmi market. We got to sample the 4 different samples of their ice creams: vanilla, matcha, sea salt and ube (Taro). I ordered a medium cup of ube and vanilla and a medium cup of ube and matcha in a cup with gold leaf, mochi balls and the Japanese chestnut. My Ube dollop left a hollow hole when it was served into my cup. :( The gold looks luxe but it's not the creamiest of ice creams. Gold leaf of course has no flavor at all. The chestnut is soft and has a slight nuttiness left to it, seems it's been pickled and is on the soft side. The mochi is hard and chewy, it's not pleasant at all. It's a fun concept. The service was good. The ice creams are okay, not a richness or creaminess I like in my ice cream. $16.43 for our two cups.

Sherry W.

Yelp
Matcha Soft Serve!!! I've been dreaming about this since California. I'm so glad they have this in Michigan. The portion size is huge and the gold paper costs additional.

Joyce L.

Yelp
Place: This place is near my favorite local Korean mart and I never knew that this place opened up nearby. I am really glad that my friend recommended this to me. This place is pretty spacious and there is a lot of covid precautions. :) Service: The service was amazing! During the time I was there there was a buy one get one deal which is whoa amazing since the prices are a little higher. Food/price: There are so much options and boujee toppings you can get. There is the one where you can get gold on top which is pretty cool. I got the takoyaki cone with green tea matcha on top. It is usually $8! Audience: Great for friends and family! I went with my brother and best friends so anyone is welcomed :) Recommend/tips? I feel like this is a place that I would recommend when you want to treat yourself!

April A.

Yelp
It was a unique place but didn't have any decafe drinks. Chairs outside were broken s as bd seating inside wasn't very private. Cute concept if you're looking for an alternative to coffee or drink date.
