Imbibe at These 16 Galveston Dive Bars

"Known for its older, less rowdy crowd, this hole in the wall offers a laid-back island vibe, with plenty of chilled-out conversation. Hungry? Grab the best mushroom and swiss burger on the island and breathe in the salty air on the back patio." - Robert Dean

A little run down outside and in. Bartender kind of rubbed me the wrong way. We got the chili dogs and the bun was fresh baked I think not a store bun and it was soft, the chili was homemade but very light on the dog so left the whole thing a little dry, the hot dog was a thick style jumbo style. Tater tots were crispy. Hot dogs were huge, could definitely spilt one between two people that aren’t starving.

Google
1980's stylish sports bar. I'm West End Campeche Islander found new hang out spot. This place has a cheeseburger that gives Mel's Diner competition and that's hard to do. They got a chili dog that has triple the chili than Sonic. Quieter place to watch Astros or Houston Rockets. They got a baked potato if you just trying to chill and avoid all the huge tourist crowd. Got 3 huge plates & 3 drinks all for $50 bucks. That's a deal nowadays!

Great food. Big portions and cheap prices.

French dip meat was very tough and there was a hair in the to go box.

We stopped here for lunch. Shared a giant burger and she brought it out on two plates without us having to ask. The bartender even put a dish of pickles and mustard on my husband's plate because I said I didn't like them. The onion rings were yummy as well. 😁 Thank you!

Patrick Coco

Google
Definitely the hang out for BOI and locals. Food is delicious and reasonably priced. Burger was fresh and big, tots crispy flavorful and on point. The Frito pie also did not disappoint Nice discovery

Christina Hopson

Google
Awesome chili dogs and beautiful club sandwiches. Very good house made Bloody Mary. Service was phenomenal! Thank you for a great birthday dinner! ❤️

Google
Holy moly frijoles y'all, you GOTTA stop here for the coldest beer on the island! Been in here several times & never left hungry either. Nachos a mile high on the plate, Ruben sandwhich thick as your arm, hamburgers as big as your face! And did I mention the beer is so dang cold you'll wanna glove to hold it! Last time I went Cindy was the tender & she was so nice & funny, gave a little history about the bar too. Press Box is only a couple blocks from The Strand & the drinks are half the price as the bars there, food...a quarter of those prices. Step off the fancy strand a few blocks, you won't regret it. UPDATE: Google asked me to update my previous review and honestly, I wouldn't change a thing. Been here several times since that review. I work three blocks from here so my coworkers and I come here for drinks and eats about once a month. Y'all, just get yourselves here, get off the fancy-shmancy Strand and have some cold beer, tall shots, greasy food, served with a smile, laugh, and good attitude.

Yelp
What a great little neighborhood bar. Joey and Will took great care of us. Those dudes are hilarious and will for sure bring us back in the next time we're down.

Yelp
The Food was Chef Kiss The Ribeye steak and grilled Salmon the salad was fresh the bake potato was good as well , And if the food isn't enough to bring you back ,The warm friendly southern hospitality of the staff (Claire and Danielle ) definitely will. The ambiance was cozy quiet with the option to dine outdoors.

Yelp
5/4/25 split the Turkey melt and tots. Superb!!! Danielle was pleasant and efficient as always. We love this local place!

Yelp
Everyone sure wasn't kiddin' when they said Press Box has one of the best Reubens around! I got it to go on my way home, and I know the food is outstanding when I put it on a plate but don't make it out of my kitchen without taking a few bites standing up at the counter. Every single part was cooked to perfection... and the tots were amazing as well! Crispy and flavourful. I don't have many Reubens left to try on the island but I see this one staying in the top 3, if not holding the #1 spot! Inside, it's very cozy pub-esque and I would have no qualms going back and dining in instead of taking out. The employees were very welcoming and genuinely sweet. A hidden island gem for sure.

Yelp
Went to Press Box to take a break from a conference and to watch some NCAA basketball recently. Met some folks there. Bartender was very hospitable and she put the game we requested on the TVs. Music was at a decent level... not too loud. Place had about a dozen locals in it. A few tourists drifted in and out. We enjoyed our time there. Nice local neighborhood bar. We did not try any food

Yelp
Finally stopped in after walking by multiple times. Great food, service, prices and vibe. Good portions. Definitely be back.
google avatar

Shobey E.

Yelp
$1 signed wall boards, small bar 3 drafts, two people working on this slow afternoon. Food is good, frozen burger Patty was not well cooked, but atmosphere relaxing, good prices. Maybe a GM hangout

Fiona K.

Yelp
Friends and I went here for a quick drink on a Friday night and when we walked in the place went silent. The bartender would not look at us. We sat for about 10-15 minutes trying to order and we didn't even get a look or a hello. The entire staff ignored us until we left. Would not recommend if you are not a "regular"
google avatar

Jamie W.

Yelp
Had the chilli cheeseburger for dinner. It was good it came with a large amount of tots. Bartender was excellent as well. This is definitely a local spot which is what I like. I would revisit in the future. Vibe was laidback.

Beverly W.

Yelp
Don't call yourself a sports bar of you choose a pre-season football cameo e a MLB game
google avatar

Ryan A.

Yelp
Service is always impeccable and I love a Reuben. Excellent place to grab some food and a few drinks

Jacob B.

Yelp
The service was great, very friendly atmosphere and attentive wait staff. The food was great too. We had burgers and a salad. Everythijg was cooked and prepared just right! we will definitely be back.

Graciela S.

Yelp
This place is awesome. Food was good comfort bar food, ice cold beers and bar tender super cool & very knowledgeable of not only the menu but the surrounding area. Will def come back!
google avatar

Lara B.

Yelp
This place is so cute Great sports bar Good jukebox Little patio out back Super friendly service Tasty Bar food The best basic bar I've encountered on Galveston island (I hope that's not an insult) Would definitely come back in the future
google avatar

Julie W.

Yelp
Love the vibe of this place! Kinda old school pub meets New Orleans and landed here in Galveston. Great place for a meat and sides for lunch or just grabbing drinks to hang out for a while
google avatar

Kelly M.

Yelp
Great food great drinks and fantastic service. Nice little spot in the midst of it all. Never had a bad meal yet. The hot Italian is a must try and or the party platter will serve a crowd. One of our go to places any time of day.
google avatar

Mike L.

Yelp
Very unassuming, very cool place. Not a fan of carpet on the floor but staff is ALWAYS friendly and attentive. Kinda feels like Cheers where they all "know your name" kinda vibe. The food is good, I usually get chicken fried chicken and it's very fair, burgers good too for a bar, best tator-tots ever, and I'm not a tot fan. One of my go-to spots b/c it's just...kinda cool.

Greg G.

Yelp
Food was great and Joey our bartender was fantastic!! For a neighborhood spot, they have a nice selection of appetizers and main courses as well as a full drink bar. We will be back!!
google avatar

Dana L.

Yelp
It was a rainy day and we just wanted a fun place to have a drink after lunch. The woman behind the bar immediately told us the kitchen was closing soon. We said we just wanted a drink. The woman banged on the bar like she was in a hurry. When we told her we were just there for drink and she continued to be extremely rude. We left immediately for the rudeness. We were just looking for a fun local place to go. You should just say "locals only" on the front. We are from Pasadena and Seabrook and thought we would be welcome.
google avatar

Danielle B.

Yelp
Wasn't good and wasn't bad. Just an average joe American food joint. *Chili Cheeseburger*

Lavita C.

Yelp
We went in with our 1 year old baby. Kids are allowed until 10pm, BTW. The staff was so nice and accommodating. The cheeseburger and cheese sticks were so good!
google avatar

Farrah A.

Yelp
Press Box is a locals-only kind of divey sports bar. The patrons are an eclectic mix of all kinds of folks, and everyone knows everyone. They've got lots of teles, a juke box and a food menu that ROCKS. I got chicken fried chicken with a side baker (there goes the diet) and the beau downed a chili burger with the best tots evar. Deep fried, crispy, pipin' hot - I wanted to snatch his plate. They have a few brews on draft, but not a big assortment of craft brews. There's also a patio and you can actually enjoy it on the cooler nights because there's a big outdoor fireplace.
google avatar

Suzanne L.

Yelp
The place seemed dirty and understaffed probably due to Covid. The bartender did not wear a mask the entire time we were there. Burger was frozen Pre made party. Nothing special to write home about.

Jeff H.

Yelp
The service was phenomenal, the food was just as great as the service. First time trying this place and we will be back. Go see Daniel if you can, she works Saturdays and Mondays.

Mary Ann W.

Yelp
Cozy sports bar with the best hamburgers ever! Even though it is a small bar, they can accommodate a 10 to 12 person table. The servers are friendly and attentive.

Steve P.

Yelp
Fun place with good food. Place got busy and had one bartender but he kept up and kept it engaging. Really tasty Muffaleta! Go there and have fun.
google avatar

Patsy R.

Yelp
Look for the iconic neon sign! We were visiting the area on Christmas Eve night and we enjoyed downing beers and shots with the regulars. Super fun bartender and bar crowd in general. We were super grateful their kitchen was open-not much was open over the holidays. Food was outstanding. I had the chili (no beans!) and a good salad, my date had a coney-which was huge and super tasty, dog was good quality, maybe Nathan's? Prices were also super cheap. It was a great place to spend Christmas Ever and it was one of the highlights of our holidays this year!
google avatar

Lacey D.

Yelp
The waitress and bartender were so friendly! However, the food was just ok. The club sandwich had tasty looking ingredients, but the bread needed mayo and mustard to pull it all together- it was just too dry. The turkey melt was underwhelming also. The corn dogs were pretty good though!
google avatar

Mandy S.

Yelp
I really want to give this place a 5 & really it does deserve 5... setup, service & food quality. However, as a vegetarian/vegan, they don't have hardly anything for me. :(
google avatar

Sal A.

Yelp
Local neighborhood joint. Wife and I have been eating there for years. One of few places to get corned beef on St Patty's(the Ruben). WTF Galveston? Went last night with the Missus for Prime Rib night( Monday and Tuesday). Prime rib was incredibly fatty, rubbery like they heated it up in the microwave and forgot it. Dry, tough, no flavor. Must I go to the Sal* **ass on Seawall and pay Dallas prices for a good piece of beef? Come on you guys used to do a very decent job on prime rib and last night was really bad. Told waitress and she apologized. Not good enough. Might be back but right now I don't think so.
google avatar

Becky L.

Yelp
We wanted to watch NCAA basketball and eat to support local while vacationing in Galveston. Food was ok, we had Ribeye and burgers. The service was good for just having one server who was doing her best! Really like the small bar and grill atmosphere and would give it another try.

Amy W.

Yelp
This place was a random stop which we were pleasantly surprised..didn't look like much from the street but the food here was so good. It feels like your in a Cheers episode, it's a local hangout spot. The bartender has been there for the past 22 years, very nice guy. We ordered the blackened chicken with a baked potato, chicken fried steak with fries and chicken strips with fries.. all soo good!! Definitely will go back next time we are in Galveston.

Anonymous Y.

Yelp
Excellent dive bar location. Bartender was personable and did a great job. We went for dinner and it did not disappoint. This is bar food-- and so good! We loved the people there too, so friendly. Get the southwest egg rolls.
google avatar

J L.

Yelp
Great local place for a great lunch and dinner. Great selection of beer and full bar. Outside places to sit with a fireplace. It's my go to place on the Island!
google avatar

John H.

Yelp
Press Box was recommended to me on my first trip to Galveston, earlier this year. The review was pretty much 'great bar, primarily locals, and isn't full of douchey tourists'. Totally felt welcomed from the moment I walked in (though I was a tourist, too). The bartender, Joey, is awesome and knows EVERYBODY in town. Met several of the locals and was entertained by stories of Galveston, past and present. Stopped by a couple more times that week and had the same experience, so it wasn't a one-off. Made sure to make it my first stop after arriving in town last night. Same experience again...fantastic and friendly locals. Food is actually pretty good! This place fits the vibe of the town.

Yelp
I've been coming here awhile and it's a great place. Drinks are good and the food is some of the best you'll find and is reasonably priced. The BLT is great. Prime rib is excellent too, but this visit I opted for the 10 oz ribeye with sautéed mushrooms. It was perfectly cooked and seasoned. Delicious! The cooks always do a great job. Did I mention the tots (tater tots)? They are so good too! If you can come for the lunch special on Friday, you should. Every Friday they have fried shrimp and it is some of the best I've ever had (and I've eaten a lot of fried shrimp)! It's a locals place, but whoever comes in will feel totally welcome. I know and love all the staff (who by-the-way have all been here a long time). Tonight, Joey took good care of us as always. Won't be long until we're back again.

Zeke D.

Yelp
Bar tenders pour basic drinks and beer, pricey. Ordered the rib eye twice, was dryer than a popcorn fart, tough, no flavor and hamburgers are frozen no flavor. Best things to eat are baked potato, salad, tator tots. Bathroom always smells like piss.

Yelp
When I visit a restaurant, I go in looking for 2 things - and both are equally important: How is the food? And how is the feel? No, The Press Box isn't 5-star dining. But I dare you to try the Patty Melt, or the Larry Bird, or the Pork Chop Special or the Chili Cheese Coney or the Wings or those crunchy, mouth-watering (dying here) TATER TOTS fried to comfort-food Nirvana - and not have your eyes roll back in your head? No posible! And second - the feel. Dare you to visit the Press Box on a Wednesday or Friday or Saturday evening and not feel like you just walked onto the set of "Cheers." Seriously, you just feel good being at The Press Box. In fact, I'm heading there right after work. I'll be at the corner, in between Dallas, Margo, Steve, and Koopman.
google avatar

Shelley M.

Yelp
Food was meh, the service was meh, it was not really a restaurant, it was more of a bar for older locals. We were looking for a place to get hot wings and we found them here, however, the wings were as tough as the tanned skin of the elderly locals that made up the clientele. They were nice though so that's why they got the 1 star. Would not revisit.
google avatar

Yelp
Really cool bar! This is where the locals go! Food is typical for a bar, not great, but you will still enjoy it. Yes, Will the bartender can be a little surly, but he adds to the character of the place. Great place to sit and watch a game or just soak up the local conversations!
google avatar

Keshlia S.

Yelp
This place was surprisingly nice. The food was great and our waitress was really nice and friendly. The atmosphere was great. I didnt like where they were trying to sit us. They placed us wsy in the back and it looked very uckie. Just some booths and a table. We asked to go outside and it was much better. I really enjoyed this place however it was entirely to dark. I guess the lights were low to keep the bugs away. Overall once we got in and adjusted to our surroundings we had a blast. Good ambience, great food friendly staff...

Sitto G.

Yelp
Wasn't really excited to try this place but my girlfriends and I really wanted something to eat and drink and this was the only place open when we pulled into Galveston so we ordered Long Island iced teas didn't catch the waitress name but she was a older white lady skinny and short with short red hair. She then take our food order cuts me off before I was done! It wasn't even busy when we got there. An hr goes by there new people who got there food before us that just walk in idk but we felt like this place was being racist and was only attending the people that got there after us because they were WHITE WHITIE WHITE WHITE WHITE!!! Horrible!

Duke B.

Yelp
Nothing fancy, but is a great little restaurant. My wife and I come here for lunch every know and again. They have lots of lunch specials including a steak that is pretty good and very reasonable.
google avatar

Erasmo F.

Yelp
Great dive bar with even better food. Waitress and bartender are the best. They have been there for quite a while and are very helpful. I love the lunch specials, and the food is reasonably priced. Great Larry Bird (Grilled Chicken Sandwich) and Coney Islands that are super BIG! Half order for most people. Full order better be hungry. Always love coming here and never disappointed.
google avatar

Maria M.

Yelp
This place was good. I have no complaints. I ate hotdogs and they were great, huge hot dogs. My boyfriend got a burger. He had no complaints either. Our waitress was cool too. I would return.
google avatar

Ciara A.

Yelp
It was a slow day, and a friend and I wanted to try something new. I've been on a sandwich/burger kick lately. So we went to the press box! The service is very hospitable , but the food was just not right. We had the egg rolls to start, they were weird tasting -- the industry in us we asked if they were from Sysco ... What do ya know, it was . Even the spicy ranch couldn't save it. So we move on to our entrees-- le burger. I wanted the chili cheese burger with extra chili for my fries. The burger was not good at all. The chili on the burger was similar to a sloppy joe and there was hardly any cheese. I hate sloppy joes-- I did not finish that burger. The chili on the side was quite good... Nothing like what was on the burger (why, I have no idea) -- but I didn't eat much of my fries-- even with the chili on the side I lost my appetite. My friend and I felt like we wasted our 20$ bill. Rightfully so. They may have other good recipes, but that's not what I like. I like chili and I like burgers. If I can't get it from this place, I will get it somewhere else. Try it if you want, but this is a good place to just write off. Ciaoxoxoxo

Larry H.

Yelp
Got off the cruise ship and started looking for a sports bar to watch the OU/Texas game. Came across The Press Box. Great choice, behind the bar was Stephanie, first day on the job, made this Oklahoma pair feel welcome. I had the coneys, wife had the club. Both had tater tots. Not only was the food good, the portions were so big neither of us could finish.
google avatar

Elisabeth H.

Yelp
The poor guy at the bar was struggling to keep up because apparently the waitress didn't show up tonight, but the food was great. Packed with locals, this place is a little off the beaten path and isn't tourist focused like the other annoying overpriced places on the island. I had the burger with Swiss and avocado on it and it was big and delicious. Fries were fine. Southwest egg rolls and dipping sauce were sooo good! We'll be back!

Bonnie B.

Yelp
Great recommendation from my hair dresser . We have only been in Galveston a few weeks and wanted a good neighborhood bar to go to. Great hamburgers and Joey was a great bartender. Can't wait to go back! If you want good drinks and food please stop by there.
