Oh man, I definitely wanted to love this place. They're family owned, small business and have been around for a long time so I've heard. However my first experience here was not that great. I was down the street waiting for my father's day order from Broadway Prime so decided to check this place out. I have a major sweet tooth and wanted to bring home some sweets for my dad and if I found something that caught my eye for myself, that would be sweet too! (see what I did there! lol pun intended).
I first walk in and my first thought that was it was pretty dark towards the back of the shop where they had candy displayed. I was helped by Irene initially when I said I wanted to get some toffee. She walked me over to the location where they were displayed and I picked out three small bags saying they were $4.00 each. I then told Irene that I would get some ice cream from the other counter and she said that's fine, she would hold my chocolates until I got my ice cream to pay all together.
On the other side, there was one person working the ice cream counter and one person ahead of me. It took a few minutes for that order. When it was my turn, I chose to get a medium sized cup of ice cream - my two flavors were mango and ube. I felt like there weren't too many options to choose from but couldn't go wrong with those two classics. I got my ice cream, and went back to the chocolate counter and picked up a bag of chocolate covered gummy bears (5 dollars, a quarter pound pre packaged).
Irene asked for one of the other workers to ring me up while she went to help another customer. This is where I had an issue. She proceeded to say that "These prices are not right. These are english toffees. I wonder who put the wrong prices on these." Normally people would then tell the customer the correct price and ask if they still wanted the item. In my head, I was thinking it couldn't be much more in price so i didn't mention it.
It wasn't until I got home that I realized that it was over almost seven dollars!! For three pieces of small toffee in the pack, that was simply not worth it. Had I known when I was in store, I would not have bought these. I bought three packs and gave them to my dad since he loves english toffee. He opened a pack to try and gave me a piece. The color looked like it was over, not a light caramel brown, but a darker chocolate color. The nuts were also not very finely chopped.
My ice cream, even though it tasted great - it was from Loard's. They do not make it in house. To me, that takes away from the experience. The flavors were light and refreshing, but again since they do not make this in house, there's nothing really too special. A medium scoop allowed me to choose two flavors for $4.95, but it was two of the tiniest scoops ever. It was similar to the kids scoops from Mitchell's.
The chocolate covered gummy bears were the saving grace of my experience here, but the 5 dollar price tag for the quarter pound does not justify another trip here even if I was in the area unfortunately. There are much better and cheaper ice cream places in the city that make their ice cream in house that are cheaper, with a much bigger menu and more unique flavors. For toffee, make sure you get the right price before purchasing but I would recommend elsewhere again (littlejohn's does a perfect job every time).
