Take a Food-Filled Road Trip Through Pittsburgh’s Appalachian Culture | Bon Appétit

"A classic sandwich shop established in 1930, famed for its fries-and-slaw sandwiches originally made to feed truckers; signature orders include a burger-and-cheese stacked with fries and slaw, and adding a fried egg is a beloved extra touch." - ByMike Scalise

We stopped in for lunch on a Friday and waited about 10 minutes outside before getting seats at the bar. The chili and fried pickles were amazing! Really glad we visited the original location; it has a great local vibe and seems to be a favorite in the area. Plus, it’s in a lively spot with plenty to see and do just steps away.

We had to try the famous Pittsburgh sandwich at the original Primanti brothers location in the strip district. Ordered their Cajun chicken sandwich along with their lemon pepper bone in wings. I really liked their wings. The sandwich was very subpar for my taste. Sandwich quantities are very huge and the potato’s in there are totally dominated any other flavours. The wait times are horrible and the staff really don’t bother you getting seated unless you wait in a line outside the door for 40 min and more.

We finally crossed off Primanti’s from our list! I can’t believe how big these sandwiches are, and I’m so glad that we shared! It was definitely interesting to have the coleslaw and fries on the sandwich, but I didn’t hate it. Cool vibe inside and a great menu to pick from. We also enjoyed pickles on the side. The pastrami was tasty. I can see why this place was a staple for the locals!

Google
A good sandwich, I'm guessing the crowds come more for the "character" and style and history. A bit gimmicky. In this age of social media, being the oldest doesn't necessarily mean you're the best any more. Guy out front was very nice, gave me some history on the place, and he brought out some french fries for a cranky kid at one point. Staff inside, almost all women behind the counter and cooking, didn't seem too happy to be there all seem a bit miserable. The Pirates won last night, smile once and a while ladies! We had the Ruben, as well as a sliced pickle and fried mozzarella. I don't need all the soggy fries stuffed in my sandwich, so I got them on the side. The sandwich itself was pretty good, one of the only ones not served on the white Italian bread I guess. Very impressed with the reasonable prices, that was the best part about the experience.

Google
The food is cheap, which is good and the service is fast, but the waitress did forget stuff we told her because she wasn't using a notebook to write our orders down. I tried 4 different sandwiches and all of the meat was dry and I think this place is over-hyped. They also have the sandwiches come out not on plates, but on parchment paper. They do have paper trays you can get though. There was one sandwich that was good, it was the Pitts-Burger Sandwich, I recommend that one if you go here.

If you’re in Pittsburgh, Primanti Brothers is an absolute must-visit! This iconic spot is a true Steel City staple, and it more than lives up to the hype. Our party of four all went for the original Primanti Brothers sandwich, and wow, it did not disappoint. The bread was fresh, the meat perfectly seasoned, and the signature pile of crisp fries and tangy coleslaw right inside the sandwich made each bite a perfect balance of flavors and textures. It’s messy in the best possible way, and exactly what comfort food should be. Friendly service, a lively Pittsburgh vibe, and sandwiches big enough to satisfy even the hungriest appetite. Primanti Brothers deserves every bit of its legendary status. Highly recommend!

Google
A trip to Pittsburgh is not complete without a visit to the Primanti Brothers at their original location in the Strip District which opened in 1933. Their sandwiches are famous for being served on wax paper, with fries and coleslaw right on the sandwich. I had the pastrami which was delicious! In 2007, the restaurant was recognized as an "American Classic" by the James Beard Foundation.

Google
A must do if in Pittsburgh. The original sandwich is the pastrami. They do have a vegetarian option of their original sandwich (the cheese combo). They did have a selection of local beers and make their own red ale. The music was also good. Floor was quite dirty, waitress was quite absent, someone else delivered our food, and we had to wait a long time to pay. But the bathroom was horrible. It was not clean and the door of the only stall does not close. It is also downstairs, so not handicapped accessible.

Yelp
My coworker and I were in town on business and we had a few drinks and a cigar at Blend and got hungry. At the bartenders recommendation, we headed to Primanti's. Never heard of Promanti's but it was highly recommended.l so off we go. With in walking distance of Blend. We're from Texas and the only place I can compare its atmosphere to is Waffle House and in a good way. A few waitresses and one cook on the grill. Simple menu and still on paper - not a QR thing. On to the food. First off - huge sandwiches. I got The Don. And damn it was soooo good. So much meat. I didn't read the menu but the sandwich's come standard with fresh cut French fries and coleslaw. That kicked it up a few notches. My coworker got the hot pastrami - it looked good and he said it was awesome. I was very impressed with the cook. That girl had it together. She did it all and made it look effortless. Great cook. This place should be on everyone "go to" when visiting PGH. I know I will.

Yelp
2 stars bc of nice wait staff & quick service. zero stars for the food & presentation. I asked if the burger was a hamburger but with the same famous toppings as the other things - coleslaw and fries on the sandwich. She said yes everything comes done up that way, and she said it was "the closest thing to a hamburger ". This may be true, but it was a far cry from a hamburger. I had flashbacks from cafeteria grade school - this taste exactly like that subpar hamburger like thing, TV dinner Salisbury steak - but without the gravy even. And this is not what I would call coleslaw, this is Shredded cabbage, slightly fermented. No sweetness, no mayo. The Italian bread the sandwiches come on was good. The fries were so hollow hard and overcooked. I never complain to waitresses, but when she asked how things were I I did have to ask - are the fries supposed to be like this?. She said no, and she did give us new fries, but to be honest, they were only slightly better. They were hot, but still super overcooked to the point where there's no potato. I guess that's how they do it here but it's not good. My husband got the number one seller, if you can believe it, the burger was number two, he got the pastrami, and he said the pastrami was OK but very dry and again absolutely no sauce. They did have hot sauce on the table, which we usually don't use, but we did That made it slightly better. If this is what Pittsburgh is famous for, I was kind of scared of being here for the next couple days. Our waitress was very nice and the place was cute enough, we were able to sit outside. But the other big detractor was that they don't even give you a plate. The waitress was literally just holding the sandwiches in her hand pieces of paper. Not even a basket. I guess this is "Eco." lol. At least it wasn't terribly expensive, and the location was great and the service was fast. But I feel like this place is the Emperor's new clothes - everyone's been talking about for so long. We feel like we have to go and then. Womp womp.

Yelp
I come through Pittsburg a lot and always make a point to swing by Primanti Bros (and have always suggested it to others traveling through) and today was extremely disappointing. I sat at the bar and was ignored for the first several minutes by multiple staff. Finally got a drink order taken and then another long wait to get a food order in. While multiple people were standing around, speaking to other patrons around me, each other, etc. I noticed the fries were being seasoned on top when in the bowls and not tossed so the first handful would have flavor and the rest of the bunch didn't. I happened to get a very bland, and very small amount of fries compared to past visits. The sandwich, the same one I always get was very bland all together. Once finished, I sat for another 15+ minutes before I finally had to flag someone down to bring my ticket. I planned on another beer and a to go order and said forget it. I'm bummed & I don't think I'll be coming back next time. Added photos to show what today's visit sandwich looked like vs my previous visit. You can see the difference in quality and quantity!

Yelp
Come for the food and beer. Good, quick service. Large menu with lots of options. Expect a wait for a seat.

Yelp
The sandwiches don't have any good way to eat them. Too much sauce. The bread was oddly soggy also

Yelp
We stopped here for lunch at approximately 1 pm. It was busier than we expected but we were sat pretty quickly. We did split up our party of 10 between 2 tables which we were fine with. Our server took our drink orders and food order at the same time. Our food came out pretty quickly. We had 3 kids under 10 with us and there isn't a kids menu so they got the tender and fries basket. We all tried different sandwiches which were delicious as always.

Yelp
"They think that I've got no respect But everything means less than zero" (Elvis Costello) There was less than a zero chance that we'd ever head out of Pittsburgh without visiting a Primanti Brothers. I've seen their unique sandwiches celebrated on TV food shows for quite some time. So that's why we took a nice walk from our hotel and across the Roberto Clemente Bridge to the Primanti's at 2 South Market Place. It was around 2:30 on a Saturday and there was quite a line waiting for a seat. The line moved fast, and we grabbed a table for two on the front patio. Now in case you're one of the few folks unfamiliar with a Primanti sandwich, let me educate you. You can expect a big sandwich with fresh Italian bread piled high with meats, cheese, freshly cut French Fries, cole slaw, and sliced tomatoes. Now I know what you're thinking- "WTF, did he just say French Fries on a sandwich????". Yup, legend has it that in the 1930's a customer went to the original Primanti's (today they have 44 locations across Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Maryland) with a big sack of potatoes. The owner cut them up, tossed them on the grill and when customers liked them, Old Man Primanti decided to incorporate them into the sandwiches. Thus, a Star Was Born. We split a New Yorker Tall Boy ($11.69) with Pastrami, corned beef, Swiss cheese and Primanti Bros. spicy beer mustard, sweet-and-sour coleslaw, fresh-cut fries, and ripe tomatoes on house recipe Italian bread. Two soft drinks were $2.99 each. Was the sandwich delicious? As Walter White/Heisenberg famously said, "You're God damn right!" What a combination -soft bread, crunchy slaw, salty fries, savory meats, and cold tomatoes. It was fantastic. Thank you Primanti's for a wonderful meal and Thank you Pittsburgh for a great visit.

Yelp
I love this location, I have been here a few times. The waitress I had was great, she was such a sweetheart. This is one of the locations that gave me all flats when I asked for it! I like their bbq wings and the drunken duck cocktail.
google avatar

Yelp
This Primanti's location is much smaller than I realized. We sat outside, which I wouldn't recommend. There are no signs not to feed the pigeons and someone at the table next to us was feeding the flying rats. Next thing we knew, there were pigeons under our table which really freaked us out (especially my friend with a fear of birds). The service was okay and very friendly, tho I did not get what I ordered & I had to ask for them to fill our empty paper towel dispenser. My sandwich was supposed to have no tomato and crispy fries on the side. I had a tomato on the sandwich (easy fix since I'm not allergic) & fries that were the typical soggy fries on my sandwich. Removing the fries was much more annoying, since I lost a lot of my cheese in the process. They still have the same decent happy hour as other Primanti's, but the service, food, & atmosphere aren't as good as other locations.

Yelp
Classic Pittsburgh staple! The sandwiches are delicious and the bread is so fresh. I tried the Capone and it did not disappoint. The sandwiches are huge and the prices are great. French fries and coleslaw are a must. The waitress was really nice and we'd definitely return.

Yelp
Great service. Good was fantastic. Pricing exceptional based on size and weight of sandwich. Beer was cold. Too full to try anything else.

Yelp
I'm sure back in the day, this tourist trap's sandwiches were all the rage and made with more loving care and better quality ingredients. SKIP this spot entirely. It's not the historic thing it claims to be. PS The sandwiches come cold, no toasted bread, no melted cheese. That was a surprise to me. I did eat it, and it was just OK and something I could have made at home. We also ordered a salad without tomatoes, and not only did they forget, tomatoes, but they were chopped into tiny bits and mixed into the salad which was topped with fries. I also ordered a cocktail, and it had no booze in it whatsoever. Order beer to be safe. Don't fall for the signature cocktails. The service was two stars at best. Horrible service because servers are tasked with making your sandwiches! If you've ever waited tables in a busy bar, you know that that just is not possible. Something is going to suffer, and in our case, it was the service.

Yelp
I've seen Primanti Bros on so many foodie travel shows, so this was top of my list when I booked my trip to Pittsburgh. I was staying in downtown, so this was a quick walk from my hotel, but there are plenty of parking garages nearby. I was quickly greeted and seated outside, however I did pop inside really quick and there was plenty of seating between the two. They had TVs outside, which was nice for those wanting to watch sports while dining. The server was busy, but very friendly and attentive. I already knew what I was going to order as there was one option for vegetarians. I do very much appreciate that they have this option as I was in Philly recently and they did not have any decent vegetarian options for a cheesesteak. I'm glad I didn't have to miss out on trying this iconic sandwich just because I don't eat meat. Great job, Primanti Bros! My sandwich came out, wrapped in butcher paper and I enjoyed the no frills approach. It was absolutely massive! They did not skimp at all just because it wasn't meat based. I spent a few minutes planning my approach to eating it, which consisted of alternating between picking fries off and dipping them in Heinz (I mean, I am in Pittsburgh!) and unhinging my jaw to take a bite of the sandwich. The southwest black bean patty was very flavorful and delivered on the spices you'd expect from a southwest inspired dish. I'm not a coleslaw fan at all, but I wanted the entire experience so I left it on. To my surprise it was actually really good and complimented the sandwich well. I think it was because it wasn't smothered in dressing like most coleslaw. The fries, omg, so good! If the sandwich wasn't so massive I could have easily ordered a side of fries because they were delicious! They were soft, but not soggy. Definitely had a handcut feel. The sandwich all together was addictive! I wanted to eat the entire sandwich, but my stomach wouldn't let me so I took half back to my hotel. Not sure where the low ratings come from, perhaps because it's a local "chain", but I'd absolutely go back if I ever find myself in Pittsburgh again.

Yelp
We went on a busy Saturday afternoon and sat in the covered area outside the restaurant... Although it was nice, it was still quite cold... Once we got the staff's attention, we received it quickly, and our waitress was attentive. We ordered a bowl of chili for the table, which was absolutely amazing. The boneless wings were mostly breading, but the sauce was tasty. If you like eating straight cabbage, then go ahead and order the coleslaw, but otherwise, I would see clear. Overall, a decent experience, Just need to tweak what we order.
google avatar

Nicole W.

Yelp
I was told this was a Pittsburgh thing I had to try- fries on sandwiches. I got the Primanti-Style Buffalo Chicken Sandwich. It's a huge sandwich so I had half for lunch and half for dinner. Now fries on the sandwich, I'm not against it but I just wasn't a big fan of their style of fries. This place is popular so you may have to wait a bit, but they got people in and out quickly.
google avatar

Therese T.

Yelp
Sundays apparently have $0.75 wings so I had to try them. I got bbq and garlic parm and thought both were great. The mozzarella wedges were fresh out of the fryer and so crispy -- loved them! I got a turkey sandwich with no coleslaw. I don't love the fries on the sandwich, its just too potatoey for me but I like the concept. Overall, it was a lot of food for a really good price! It's fun to watch the food being made too. Chill vibes, quick service. I'd go back and is definitely a spot you have to try at least once in Pittsburgh!
google avatar

Ella W.

Yelp
As if this place isn't special already, there's a special deal going on right now, buy one sandwich get one for 2 cents (offer valid only one per table). The servers are busy filling orders and smiling while they do their jobs. The line during lunch time is long and moves fast. Eat your sandwich there or take it to go. The vibe of this restaurant is perfectly Pittsburgh (if thats even a thing). One sandwich is perfect and next time, I recommend doubling the meat, adding onions and an egg. A must try!! Came back again the next day and ordered double meat! So yummy!
google avatar

Eid F.

Yelp
I'd come back for another sandwich! Ordered a few sandwiches... everything tasted great. For the size of the sandwich and taste... it was VERY reasonably priced. Bread was a little thick and since not toasted it sort of fell apart midway through. They serve the sandwiches on wax paper directed on the table with no utensils so be ready for a delicious messy meal. Place was busy for lunch... most of the tables in and out were taken and the bar seats were all taken. Service was good. Parking at this location sucks. Took a while to find a spot around downtown the block. The mens bathroom is in the basement down some narrow stairs so be warned.

Yelp
Primanti Brothers promotes their own food as "almost famous" sandwiches. But let's face facts. After appearing on a plethora of foodie television shows, they're legitimately famous now. Their sandwiches are a bucket list item for many, and it's certainly been on my list for decades. So I found myself in Pittsburgh near the Market Square Primanti Bros. and decided it was time to eat their most famous colossal sandwich! The PB Reuben features half a pound of corn beef, lots of pastrami and stretchy Swiss cheese, Parmesan horseradish mayonnaise, and grilled slaw with an entire order of french fries on the bottom all served between two slices of rye bread. The sandwich is easily a 4.5-star experience, a brilliant combination of flavors and textures that I highly recommend! The only knock is that the fries get a little soggy amidst the melee, but it's still wonderful! Now, why the three-star rating? This particular location only gets three stars thanks to the madness at the entrance. There is no organization at all. You could see empty tables and a sizeable crowd waiting outside hoping to get one of those tables. But it took 30 minutes for an employee to even appear and acknowledge anyone outside. When they did, it was merely to hand an order to an Uber Eats guy and disappear back inside. There was no order to the line, so some who arrived later ended up closer to the unused hostess stand. There was no polite, welcoming employee asking if everyone had been helped or if anyone needed a table which happens at most restaurants. It was simply mass chaos. It turned out that half of the crowd was simply waiting for a takeout order, while the other half waited for a table. But there was no way to know that. I finally gave up on getting a table and placed my order online which required 40 minutes to make one sandwich. Only by walking in and asking a server about my order were we able to locate the sandwich sitting in a bag on the counter getting cold. Recap: That's 30 minutes to make the sandwich and 10 minutes of sitting in a bag. The sandwiches are fabulous, but the entire system of addressing potential customers and mixing takeout orders with dine-in customers needs to be overhauled.
google avatar

Melissa H.

Yelp
Anytime we visit Pittsburgh we have to visit the All Most Famous Primanti Bros! As always, the sandwiches and fries are high quality. The Sangria was perfectly citrusy and the Iron City beer is a beer for beer drinkers! The pricing is very fair considering the high quality meats. Also the restaurant is vibrant with sports on TV and friendly staff. P.S. they have an outside patio at this location facing the square and a bar inside to sit at.

Yelp
On Halloween, after a long day of activities, a fried and I were looking for a dinner spot. It was only around 8:30pm but many of the restaurants in the area were already closing their kitchens. Luckily, we found Primanti Bros. My friend, a native Chicagoan who's visited Pittsburgh pretty frequently, told me Primanti Bros was legendary for their sandwiches. We ordered drinks while perusing the menu. I chose the Roast Beef and Cheese, which is typically something I always enjoy. The sandwich arrived and was a fairly thick stack of roast beef, with cheese and fries, all on sourdough bread. My biggest complaint was that no part of it was warm. Even the melted cheese seemed like it had been put under a burner for a few seconds. Our server was fabulous, and I'd chalk up part of the experience to it being Halloween night and late in the evening. Probably just not the kind of sandwich I prefer.

Yelp
Had to experience a Pittsburgh legend. So I went here. Very unassuming place (I mean this place has been on National television) serves your beverage in plastic cups and the sandwich comes wrapped in paper. The staff was very nice. My waiter told me ho to dress the sandwich, put hot sauce on the coleslaw. It was a good sandwich, however all the stuff on it took away from the meat and cheese. I most assuredly would tell those who come to Pitts to make this a stop. Heck this was the LOWEST lunch bill I've had in years 14 bucks and that's with the tip. With such a renowned place I would have thought the prices would have been higher. Cool spot I sat outside on a Thursday it was very busy and people looking was cool
google avatar

Kalvin K.

Yelp
Definitely a Pittsburgh staple with super tasty and affordable sandwiches! Everything was piled high and delicious. The fried fish sandwich was amazing. Service here on the other hand is quite atrocious. Either they were understaffed or the servers weren't very good that night, it took about 15 minutes for me to be greeted upon sitting down. Downright unacceptable. It's a shame, the food is so good! Maybe need to try a different location.
google avatar

Yelp
This Primanti's is in a prime spot in Pittsburgh's Market Square. If you will come here, you will probably need to wait in line to be seated. We had to wait for approximately 25 minutes. We came here with out dog, so we could only sit outside. However, it is very packed both inside and outside and not a lot of space between tables. The sandwiches here come as advertised. They are very big and have French fries in the middle. I had the double roast & cheddar sandwich and it was very good. As for the service, it could have been a little better. Waiters here didn't walk around and pour water. We had to constantly remind them and it took them a while to come to us. I also would have liked if they gave us utensils. The sandwiches are big and closer to the end of the meal, I needed a fork and knife to finish eating as food was falling out from the sandwich. Overall, I am very happy I came here for food. I think this is a must try if you are in Pittsburgh.
google avatar

Leslie B.

Yelp
We were told this was a must. It was good. The service wasn't that great. The sandwich was decent but I will say I have had much better Reubens. The market square was fun and this place is certainly nostalgic. Maybe the other locations are better.
google avatar

Ashlyn P.

Yelp
Taste of the food was pretty good. Service was decent. I only would've wished it was cleaner at this location.

Yelp
Update; Came back 6 years later. Brought my husband. Split the Pitts-burger. Split pub pickles. Had a Yuengling. It was just as good of a decision as I thought it would be.
google avatar

Gretchen T.

Yelp
Came here on a Saturday afternoon in December and it was packed. The line was out the door, but moving fairly quickly. I split the original with a friend and it was just okay, the bread was crazy soft, but not sturdy enough to keep the sandwich together so it was messy trying to eat everything. Nothing really stood out about the sandwich except that it had fries in it. The coleslaw on the sandwich was good tho. The prices are cheap as well for the amount of food you get. Everyone we asked said we had to try Primanti Bros while we were in Pittsburgh, and we did. Would come back to try something else on a slower day, maybe.
google avatar

Brad M.

Yelp
Went walking around town towards Primanti Bros famous sandwich place and enjoyed a nice welcome. Sat at the bar and ordered 2 jumbo packed sandwiches. So filling but not heavy. The bread was fluffy and the fries were stacked high. Go in right when they opened and enjoyed a quiet breakfast.
google avatar

Eloy C.

Yelp
Worst food I've ever had. The service was horrible. Will not be back. This was a waste of time.
google avatar

Lauren W.

Yelp
Not the best Primanti's in the city, service was friendly but just okay from a speed and attention perspective (refills etc.). Didn't do a sandwich which may have been a mistake. Wings lacked flavor but we were told they don't season the batter, this might be plus depending on your palate but it wasn't my cup of tea. Other appetizers (onion rings and mozzarella sticks) were okay. With so many other options around, I probably wouldn't recommend this as your stop of choice BUT I can't speak to the sandwich and sandwiches is what they do best.

Yelp
Good service. Food is tasty and amazingly good. Ambience is good. Server are friendly and helpful for to decide what to order.

Yelp

Yelp
This place was good! I shared the buffalo chicken sandwich with my brother and we got it without the slaw. It had some tasty French fries on the sandwich that I really liked. The food came out really fast and the service was friendly.
google avatar

Carl N.

Yelp
Definitely a must try once. Very cool vibe to it, but honestly not seeing the hype with these sandwiches. Just overloaded with ingredients that don't really work together and a lack of sauce.

Jonathon L.

Yelp
Large hot fresh sandwiches. Got the double roast and ched. Also wanted fries and got the stallman fries. Waitress must not be familiar with the menu as I was told the fries were cheese, ranch, and bacon. Came out as Chili, sour cream, and jalapeño fries. I am not a big fan of chili due to acidity but fortunately I liked these. Will come back but would order something different next time.

Yelp
Was in Pittsburgh and when there it is almost mandatory to go to Primanti's. You might not want a massive sandwich but it is so Pittsburgh that a 24 hour sandwich shop for truckers turned into a destination spot. Its simple, take a regular sandwich and stuff it with fries and and slaw and there you go! Would I consider the place a gourmand's delight? No, but it is the ambiance that makes it awesome. The original spot in the Strip is very crowded on sports weekends. I came to town to visit my alma mater and the Steeler game. I stayed downtown near Market Square and walked the half block. Already a line at 5pm on A Friday, but just a 10 min wait. Got an Iron City and the classic Pittsburger. Served on paper, the burger was as good as it looks. And the fries were just as tasty. Was it gourmet? For truckers, yes. That said, when food adds to the Pittsburgh ambiance on a Friday night with friendly service sitting outdoors listening to a Pittsburgh jazz ensemble in 80 degree weather, I felt truly on vacation and relaxed. My server was a cute friendly gal who constantly came by our table of 49er fans and made sure we were content and had nice little digs about her "Stillers", but she lived up to the "Pittsburgh Nice" reputation! So if looking for a great Weekend football bar food atmosphere, primanti's is a must. Market Square, the Strip and Oakland (Pitt) locations are all unique. So try em all! Go Niners!

Yelp
If you don't go here when you visit PGH, you just haven't experienced Pittsburgh. You know a place is good when it's filled with locals and tourists alike. These sandwiches are made of, what my friend Renee calls, the perfect bite! A little bit of everything hitting the taste buds all at once. Each sandwich is made the same with coleslaw and fries on it, you just need to pick your meat! When we sat down in this little piece of Americana, I had high hopes. Everyone I knew had been talking about this place for days! We got the original (pastrami) sandwich, fried pickles, and a Yuengling beer. While the beer simply tasted like Bud Light, the food did not disappoint! I was expecting pickle coins to come breaded and fried. Nope! These were full-on spears still piping hot abs perfectly crispy from the fryer. NGL, I would have been happy with just the pickles and ranch. The coleslaw was a definite stand out in the sandwich too. I'd definitely make it a point to go back and try out some other sandwiches. As always, here in Pittsburgh, the service was amazing! Charming, quick, efficient, and friendly.

Yelp
Was in Pittsburgh for a work conference and had ti decide between eating food that was highly rated or the place where you "have to go" when you're in Pittsburgh. I went to Primanti Bros and tried the sandwich that they are known for. It was only okay. Probably an acquired taste, but I was sorry I went. The drinks were good and the waitress was friendly though!

Yelp
Sandwich was great, the spicy sweet mustard was a plus. Outside seating was nice. No frills sandwich.. just a good one... French fries in there too. Not a large restaurant, so a big crowd would be waiting..

Yelp
We are on our first trip to Pittsburgh and Primanti Bros. was our first meal. There was a wait but it was well worth it. The ambience was everything you could ask for in a local sports bar. The food was very good. I had the pastrami and cheese and my wife had the Pitts-burger. Both were very good. Unique sandwiches with the house made coleslaw slaw and fries both on the sandwich. The cole slaw had a bit more vinegar than I would prefer if it were a side, but it worked very well on the sandwich. We also ordered some wings to serve as an appetizer and they were very good as well. Please know, though, that the sandwiches are a meal unto themselves and adding the wings made for a very large meal. At least for us. We also each had the Primanti Bros. Red Ale and I highly recommend it. And, if they sold the Primanti Bros. glassware as a souvenir, I'd have certainly bought one. Despite being very busy and operating with a lean staff, the service was outstanding. There appeared to be three front of house staff, excluding bartenders. The hostess was highly efficient and very friendly. There appeared to be one server handling the outdoor seating by herself and Lucas was taking care of those seated inside. Lucas was very friendly and, despite being in constant motion, we never felt rushed. The staff run in the food were very courteous and the kitchen staff was clearly busy keeping orders flowing. It is easy to see why Primanti Bros. is a local institution.

Yelp
Food was hyped up and came thru. I had the Oh sandwich. Service was good and quick, and the ambiance was great. Market square is a bad ass spot

Yelp
Stopped in here for a taste of some local Yinzer cuisine and we were not let down. Make sure to come hungry as the sandwiches are very big and VERY filling. We didn't even need dinner after having lunch there! I enjoyed the pastrami sandwich the best of all of our trials. Inside can be a little crowded but they seem to move tables out pretty quick.

Yelp
This Primanti's, one of the original four in the city, is a hot spot for tourists. It's in a great location, relatively near all of the sports stadiums and downtown office buildings, but you may face a line to get inside. It's not a giant restaurant. The food is what you'd expect. Burgers and sandwiches with French fries and slaw on top. If you're a fan of vinegar slaw, you're in luck! They have a wide variety of beers on tap and Bloody Mary types of cocktail creations. I have never experienced bad service here, but be warned that your waiter/waitress will likely be slammed with serving several tables at the same time. If you're looking for the same food with a less hectic pace, there are plenty of other Primanti's around the suburbs these days -- with a different vibe.

Yelp
My son and I were on our annual baseball trip, we've been to around 15 stadiums so far. Before the game Saturday we walked a bunch with our lunch destination Primanti Brothers. It's located in a cool section "the strip" lots going on there. There was a moderate line and everyone on line was super excited about being here. People in front of us were from Pittsburgh but move away 20 years ago and were very nostalgic about coming back. Line really only took about 20 minutes. We sat down then waited about another 20 minutes to get our food. With all the waiting we were told the "best" items to get and how big their sandwiches are, so we had great expectations. We're from NY, so I guess most these people don't know what a huge sandwich looks like. I'm a descent size eater and was able to finish it off with a side order of pickles. While it was good, it was not anything that changed m6 world

Yelp
Outstanding food. Wonderfully helpful staff! This place is as crowded as an ant hill, but the wait is relatively short, and the staff made us feel like the only patrons. The beer/liquor selection is legit. The bread is legendary.

Yelp
A Pittsburgh favorite and one I always look forward to eating at when I come here. The Pitts-burger is my favorite and it's always supper fast to get your food.

Yelp
Huge sandwiches! Fries on top was a nice surprise, but definitely doesn't take home well. Overall the food was great, service was friendly. Being right in downtown was nice.
