There was less than a zero chance that we'd ever head out of Pittsburgh without visiting a Primanti Brothers.
I've seen their unique sandwiches celebrated on TV food shows for quite some time.
So that's why we took a nice walk from our hotel and across the Roberto Clemente Bridge to the Primanti's at 2 South Market Place.
It was around 2:30 on a Saturday and there was quite a line waiting for a seat. The line moved fast, and we grabbed a table for two on the front patio.
Now in case you're one of the few folks unfamiliar with a Primanti sandwich, let me educate you. You can expect a big sandwich with fresh Italian bread piled high with meats, cheese, freshly cut French Fries, cole slaw, and sliced tomatoes.
Now I know what you're thinking- "WTF, did he just say French Fries on a sandwich????".
Yup, legend has it that in the 1930's a customer went to the original Primanti's (today they have 44 locations across Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Maryland) with a big sack of potatoes. The owner cut them up, tossed them on the grill and when customers liked them, Old Man Primanti decided to incorporate them into the sandwiches.
Thus, a Star Was Born.
We split a New Yorker Tall Boy ($11.69) with Pastrami, corned beef, Swiss cheese and Primanti Bros. spicy beer mustard, sweet-and-sour coleslaw, fresh-cut fries, and ripe tomatoes on house recipe Italian bread.
Two soft drinks were $2.99 each.
Was the sandwich delicious? As Walter White/Heisenberg famously said, "You're God damn right!"
What a combination -soft bread, crunchy slaw, salty fries, savory meats, and cold tomatoes. It was fantastic.
Thank you Primanti's for a wonderful meal and Thank you Pittsburgh for a great visit.
