The Best Hoagies in Philly | Eater Philly

"While it’s likely you’ll hear hoagie purists rant about only getting hoagies from their local shop and that there are no mainstream exceptions, Primo’s — a hoagie chain with 90-plus locations from here to Florida — did get its start in South Philly, after all. When you’re in a hoagie dead zone, or are craving one of Primo’s special spicy Diablo options, you can pretty much guarantee a Primo’s is nearby." - Dayna Evans

Placed an order online, received a confirmation email and receipt. My husband gets there and they tell him they didn’t receive an order and I send him the emailed receipt. We ordered a Baba-Boom with Broccoli Raab and Schwartzie and pay extra for the additions and we get a Bada Bing with no cheese NONE, and barely any broccoli raab. He comes home frustrated. I love Primos but this was so disappointing and frustrating.

The hoagies have no love. The bread always tastes so hard and stale, none of the ingredients seem like they’re meshing together well. The atmosphere is quite … depressing. It’s a chop for me.

For the second time this Primo‘s and Chestnut Hill had no record of me ordering a super deluxe tray for $160. I went to pick it up, of course it wasn’t ready, and they had no record that I had ordered. They said they could get it ready in 25 to 30 minutes. I thought that would work for the 15 guests at my house. However, it wasn’t ready until an hour and 10 minutes later. Then they offered me no discount or extra food of any sort.

Google
Primos hoagies and taste. Store is a great choice for lunch or similar. I will say they didn’t have any cheesesteaks available. But there’s other places for that.

I like to catch moments when there are no people in the frame, because after 10 seconds the cafe was filled with people who wanted to eat Italian food, pizza, sandwiches. actually very tasty and relatively fast. Unobtrusive sports scenery creates a special atmosphere. oops, I almost forgot - the huge parking lot will delight you right behind the cafe!

Google
Always awesome. Get the Italian, cut the lettuce, and add the spicy mustard. You can thank me later.

This Chestnut Hill location requires some serious staff training. No one is wearing a hair net, 3 employees had a lot of hair. The one guy had so much hair hanging in his face I wonder if he could see. Another employee was emptying the trash cans & slamming them back on the ground or corner (weird). This will be my last visit to this location, not worth. My sandwich was average definitely not the same quality but the cost was higher. I get it the food business is challenging but at least audit your business and staff to ensure they are representing the service you as the owner desires for your repeat or new customers.

Yelp
Good Hoagie. Worth the price. Good food. Made to what l think are the original recipes. Some old timers on the menu. I tried quite a few of the Hoagies all were excellent.

Yelp
The service is awful. Even when you order 24 hours ahead, you still have to wait for your order. While you are waiting, you watch multiple people doing nothing and looking confused. There is no sense of urgency or hustle.

James R.

Yelp
I ordered a $160 tray for 15 guests two days prior to the event. When I showed up to pick up the order, they had no record of it. This happened at this same Primos before. They said they could get to work and fill the order in 25-30 minutes. It took them 70 minutes. When I asked for a discount, they wouldn't give me one. Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me. I'm appropriately ashamed. Don't you be.

Yelp
If you are a Philly local then you are accustomed to getting your primos hoagie with a free side of just okay customer service. Hell, you almost look forward to going in and asking for a bada bing and some side eye, makes ya feel at home. What you certainly do not go in for is the complete lack of customer service or to be "educated" by some part time high school punk about how the customer should order their HOAGIE bowl. According to the company website, that the arrogant and argumentative boy (edited to reflect his attitude and not appearance. ), directed me to, Primos states that "Another delicious breadless item PrimoHoagies offers are the Hoagie Bowls. The same hoagies you know and love but without the bread." Most locations within the city will ask either which toppings you want or you tell them what you want left off. Many consider that a "Hoagie" by definition already includes meats and toppings. EXCEPT at the Chestnut hill location when the children are working. You call, ask for a hoagie in a bowl and you show up and get pathetically sliced meat pile with slopped on dressing in a plastic container AND a free side of confidently incorrect, nonsense. Pic of sad AF excuse for food. When asked for the toppings to be added I was instead admonished for not asking for the "hoagie bowl" properly. Well pardon my lack of mind reading capabilities but instead of telling me all the ways I'm wrong about your system, why must I have to argue with you about remaking it accurately?!?! If you are looking for a delicious hoagie and the normal side of Philly sass, go to MT Airy Deli. Consistently correct orders and yummy.

Yelp
My wife and I ordered two sandwiches and two drinks for dinner at around 5:35 tonight and left just before 6. The person in the Kensington performing arts shirt took our order and was probably the only person working there tonight who was actually a competent and good worker. My wife went back up to order a bottle of water for $2.60 and wanted to pay cash and had $10.60. The new person taking her order pressed the exact change button on his register and was too dumb to know that the change she needed back was $8. We also saw a Septa bus driver order a sandwich and have to wait more than 10 minutes for it and heard him complain that the order wasn't correct and that he needed to leave so that he'd leave in time. As we were leaving, another customer was complaining that he'd waited even longer than the bus driver and asked for a refund. The employee who said he was the manager said that he didn't have the ability to refund the man his money. I don't know who's responsible for this location, but it's seriously a complete and total mess and it's been this way for a while. I can't go there unless I have 30-35 minutes because how slow the service is always. One time in the past the credit card machines weren't working, the manager wanted to write down my credit card number and run it later. The way this store is run, I wouldn't trust anyone with any sensitive information. Seriously, whoever from Primo hoagie corporate is supposed to oversee this location, you need to get on this place cause it's run like a complete and total dumpster fire of a business.

Yelp
About a month ago I ordered my mother a hoagie on Uber Eats. After she finished most of the sandwich and was unwrapping the bottom half she found a rubber food service glove. Uber eats and Primos refused to issue me a refund even after I called and went to the store. I will never eat here again and plan to file a formal complaint with the health department. This location has gone downhill and if you want good food without gloves in it go elsewhere. I've refused to use Uber Eats as well but the restaurant is fully liable because they prepared my food.

Yelp
Got food poisoning here. Do not order! The meat was spoiled and now i barely eat hoagies. Scared for life

Neal R.

Yelp
Walked into the store and their we're 6-7 employees all watching the eagles game cursing. I ordered two Italian hoagies When i got home, they both had nothing but a tiny bit of meat and nothing else! No lettuce , no tomato, no onions, nothing!!! Based on my experience here at this Primo's would avoid it at any cost. Worst experience i ever had at a Primo's.

Chase N.

Yelp
Terrible. I used to be a loyal customer here until the workers gave up and ruined my sandwich's. They completely don't care about who walks through their doors. Just terrible to see a good hoagie joint get ruined.

Andrea E.

Yelp
Came to philly for a legit hoagie. PrimoHoagies did not disappoint! Fast, friendly service. We ordered on yelp and ate inside. Meatball sub was perfect. Hot Italian was - HOT! And perfect. Give me a try!

Yelp
Cue: Boys II Men "It's So Hard To Say Goodbye To Yesterday" This is a hard one to write, but if you look at the other recent reviews it's pretty par for the course here. Yesterday was my final straw with this location. When the owner is there, things are usually very good, but when he's not, things tend to go off the rails. Something is always wrong, no matter how clear we are on the phone. One of the items we ordered (cheese deluxe) was just cheese and lettuce. We asked for tomato, onion, oil, vinegar & oregano etc. It was a sad, hastily thrown together sandwich. Asking for oil must translate over the phone to "make this as dry as possible". My hoagie had all the stuff I asked for (not sure how that happened) but it was a mess. You know how a well made real deal hoagie looks incredible? This did not. Also, dry as a bone (we asked for oil and vinegar). Yes, I know I can add my own oil & vin but that's not the point. I think my man gripe here is training. Listening and training. If I want a half hearted attempt at a hoagie I'll go to Wawa and roll the dice (sometimes maybe good, sometimes maybe s**t). Actually, a corporate hoagie would have been more enjoyable than what we got yesterday, and lord knows I've had my issues with the beloved Wawa over the years. "How dare he slander Wawa!" You and I both know Wawa has gone down hill as their menu has expanded you just haven't been able to admit it (yet). So now I've got to cart my fat a** over to Roxborough to the Primos on Main St. Don't make me go to Tommy D's. Good lord. That place is frightening and I can't believe I ate what I bought from there as the kitchen looked like a major health code violation.

Yelp
We have been ordering from here for years and we ALWAYS have delicious sandwiches! Today they knocked it out of the park with my sharp Italian order- see pic. I ate the other half and could have EASILY eaten this one lol! Whoever is training their staff to create these wonderful sandwiches - KUDOS TO YOU! Keep up the great work!

Yelp
Having lived in South Philly and ordering my Primo Hoagies from the OG, I was so excited when I moved to Mount Airy and found there was a Primo there. About a year ago, we had a terrible experience. I can't even remember the details but we decided we were done with the place. But yesterday, we were really wanting Primo! I decided to go in and order in person. I explained that I would not be eating the hoagies right away and since one was hot, could they travel wrap both of them. Ordered two Primo size hoagies with oil, vinegar, hot and sweet peppers on the side for both. Now I know I should have checked, but I thought that ordering in person would mean they would get it right. When I got to my destination, I had one Primo sized and one small--not what I paid for. In addition, the hot hoagie was not travel wrapped so was completely soggy and I had none of the sides. An Italian hoagie with no peppers. NO. We called and they told us to bring them back!! Are you kidding? We wanted them travel wrapped because we were TRAVELING. They said there was nothing they could do but the owner would call me.....still waiting.

Yelp
I just ordered thru DoorDash and finished my small turkey and cheese hoagie and it was mindblowing! I had to immediately write this review. The bread was so chewy and soft and the ingredients were SUPER FRESH and I ordered approximately 30 minutes before closing. I would definitely order from here again

Yelp
I went here on the day before thanksgiving to get a tuna hoagie. I waited a while, but the staff did apologize for the wait. However when I got home and opened my sandwich I was very disappointed. There was barely an tuna!! I live about five minutes away, and will not return.

Yelp
I've been to this place a number of times for their hoagies. Quality of the hoagies has declined and prices have increased. Compared to another Primos franchise at the Jersey shore I frequent, this place is awful. In the last 2 hoagies I ordered the Roast Beef Schwarzie had more cole slaw than meat (seephoto) and the turkey hoagie had a small jar's worth of mayo. All for $22.

Aaron H.

Yelp
What is wrong with this location? I order 3 to 4 times a week ; the last 3 months , constantly missing items from order, NEVer following direction for what's delivered , today is the last straw , three employees going without lunch ! I use Grubhub , so I have to wait for a refund , I'm trying Glenside location ; the manager needs to tighten the belts immediately! This spot gives this great company a bad name !

Yelp
The sandwich was not good. The tomatoes were in terrible shape, old and falling apart. The bread was also felt a day old. Not like other locations I've been. To top it off, service is terrible. The woman behind the counter had a bad attitude. I wish I could've called off on the order when I saw her making the sandwich. Poor!

Keith D.

Yelp
First time ordering from this location via Door Dash. Ordered the turkey sandwich. The onions or turkey must have been tainted or mishandled because an hour later I was in Abington emergency with a stomach virus. Puked 5 times and nothing but the sandwich was coming out. Horrible experience.

John R.

Yelp
Ordered on-line. Told to weight 45 minutes for pick up. Got there to pick up sandwiches on time. They had not started to make them . Four staff behind the counter, 1 making sandwiches. Forget about it.

Shaquille W.

Yelp
Second time me ordering non seeded and got seeded just makes me wonder what else are they messing up and I didn't get my soda or chips

Yelp
Sorry to say that success may not be the answer to any franchise owner's quest. This is a place that closes at 4:00 on Eagle Sunday's and still, we forgive them because the quality is great. But when you order two hoagies and only one is close to correct it tells a story of absentee management. When we order an Italian hoagie with oil and condiments on the side, and a turkey hoagie with no included condiments is what comes home? My decision becomes do I really want a hoagie that much? Going down hill fast! Sorry to say.

Rob W.

Yelp
Have never been a fan of Primos once I realized how little Philly-style hoagie building knowledge these people exhibit. But my wife was hankering to have a hoagie on New Year's Day and every other place nearby was closed. I ordered their Old World Italian, a whole sandwich which ended up being $30! It was absolutely horrible and consisted of basically prosciutto and cheese with lettuce, tomato and onions. Someone else may have liked it but I can tell you that 3 of us had some and all thought it was horrible. I honestly do not recommend Primos, and this location in particular. Sorry not sorry, do better if you want a decent review!
google avatar

Sandy M.

Yelp
Ok,they need to work out some kinks- but that was one tasty sandwich. Up the game on the sides, and change your gloves when you go from taking phone orders to making a sandwich, but it was really good.......
google avatar

Jeff H.

Yelp
Primo's is a well known Philly Hoagie chain. I like Philly hoagies as much as the next guy but this week they were offering a special on their meatball sandwiches which I wanted to try. I actually thought it was going to be a Meatball Hoagie but to be honest it was just a meatball sandwich without all the hoagie accoutrements. No prob. I just took it home and added lettuce and tomato and onions and peppers etc. Anyway I like Primo's and the sandwich was good .... and the staff at the very attractive Chestnut Hill Primo's was as friendly as they always are!
google avatar

Vivian T.

Yelp
Great hoagies and service. Super nice people. Turkey diablo and sharp Italian was so yummy ! Fast and affordable lunch

LaTeisha S.

Yelp
I order 2 Hoagies and 1 Special. For the amount of money customers pay, the least they could do is get it right, the first time, No Excuses! All sandwiches, all three were wrong. The tuna, I asked to be mixed in with the Mayo. WRONG! The peppered turkey i asked for a seeded roll. WRONG! The chicken cutlet i asked for Long Hot. WRONG! I'll be returning the tuna today for a refund or a remake, my 6 year old will not eat, Tuna, put on bread with no condiments. Primo do Better by your customers. There are small businesses going out of business daily.
google avatar

Peach M.

Yelp
When I want a good hoagie I want Primos Sharp Italian.Three stars bc you have to check the order before you leave. Nothing worse than getting home and realizing what you asked for isn't there. Great that kids are working the deli and are always pleasant but, the attention to detail isn't always on point.

Chris G.

Yelp
Find Another Place to Eat Repeatedly they leave the casing on the deli meats; bite into plastic casing! And the place stinks! They are ignorant as they need to VENTILATE the place! My hair, clothes stink! Dirty place.. you're warned!

Yelp
My wife and I were thrilled to see this place open not too long ago. Made a point of stopping by here last weekend and it did not disappoint. Everything inside is nicely done. The menu is off to the side so if you don't know what you want step away from the line because it's going to take you about 5 minutes to read the menu. Options seem endless and they accommodate to changes very easily. I added another meat to my Italian and they didn't even charge me for it. Yes, the prices are a little high, but they load that bread full of meat and cheese, with just enough room for a few toppings. That's how I like my hoagies, so that's fine with me. I'd say they use close to 3x the meat of Subway on their sandwiches, so let's assume you're not turning into the next Jared Fogle if this becomes your diet. Again, that's fine with me, I'm not a fan of Jared or Subway anyway. Sandwiches taste great, as do the sides. I recommend the mac salad and of course a pickle. My one criticism would be the service. They're a little rough around the edges, but maybe they'll get better with time. They're not your waiters or anything though so once they hand you a delicious sandwich, who cares what the people behind the counter were like. Hope this place thrives. I've been saying for awhile that Chestnut Hill needed a sandwich shop. This is better. P.S.-They deliver!
google avatar

Tom D.

Yelp
This new Primo's closer to our house than the ones in Glenside or Dresher. It'll also be the most convenient to everyone in Chestnut Hill. It's clean and they were nice and quick with the order. Not much more you're looking for than that.

Louis H.

Yelp
Normally Primo Hoagies are very good, but I would avoid this one. I called in an order well before lunch and was told it would be 10 minutes. I got there 15 minutes later, paid, and waited as the place filled up with people. The owner and a lot of the help couldn't wear a mask over their noses. After another 10 to 15 minute wait, the owner found my sandwich on a pile where it had been since I walked in the door. It was soggy and had no tomato sauce on it, which isn't good for a chicken Parmesan sandwich. I will avoid this place in the future.

Jane S.

Yelp
I would give zero stars if I could, this place is filthy. Staff is very unprofessional. Find a cleaner location, perhaps Conshohocken.
google avatar

Bruce B.

Yelp
The sandwiches here are a far cry from the hoagies' I used to buy from Primo's Deli on Ritner st back in the day. To me the sandwiches are a medigan nightmare. I ordered a hoagie a couple of weeks ago called the "sharp Italian" with everything and oil & lite mayo. It was delivered to me with a seeded roll, Italian meats and provolone cheese. No lettuce, no tomato, no onions and no seasoning. I called back to complain and it must happen often because the lady who answered the phone apologized and offered me a free hoagie whenever I chose to call them back. A few days later, I called back to cash in on my freebie and ordered a hoagie called a "whacked chicken" which was a chicken cutlet with sharp provolone, broccoli rabe, and chopped bruschetta on their seeded roll. Sounds delicious huh? Not! The chicken cutlet wasn't nearly crisp enough and the breading was separating from the chicken and some of the breading was pasty. The broccoli rabe was chopped beyond recognition and the bruschetta was tasteless. On top of everything, I hate over processed veggies on my hoagie. Machine sliced tomatoes, lettuce and onions may cut your preparation time tremendously, but I love hand torn lettuce and knife chopped tomatoes and onions. I guess I expect too much.

Karima B.

Yelp
I haven't ordered in a while, but roll has changed. I prefer the sarcone harder crust bread that doesn't get soggy so quickly and is not so doughy.
google avatar

Janel G.

Yelp
Previously the closest Primo location to me was the one on Keswick Ave which was a goooood 20 minute drive. This one is super close to me (which is problematic as I want to go there all the time), is clean, and the staff are really nice. The hoagies are damn tasty - even my South Philly (where they arguably make the best hoagies) born-and-raised mother enjoys them. Prices *are* a little high. I haven't ventured outside of the Sharp Italian because I'm boring, but I have heard good things about the other choices. I do wish they had more side options, but i'm not pressed.
google avatar

Chenine S.

Yelp
The Hoagie had a great flavor, plenty of meat. The only issue I had is the roll was sliced in half and the sandwich fell apart fast.
google avatar

Ida G.

Yelp
More expensive than Subway, but hey, you get what you pay for. I love the new location, and despite the unchanged signage, you can park around the back.

Charlene S.

Yelp
I ordered a suprimo hoagie which is prosciutto mozzarella and red peppers. There was no prosciutto. They used thickly sliced salted ham instead. It was gross and I'm offended they would call it an "Italian specialty sandwich" They should not advertise prosciutto if they don't carry it.

Ariana H.

Yelp
These guys are great when they actually deliver. If you're able to drop by the store in person then this gripe is irrelevant, but for those who rely on delivery (like me), it's frustrating having to hear "Sorry, we're not delivering today" on an increasingly unpredictable basis. Not sure if it's because of being short-staffed or whatever the case may be, but I wish they could be consistent with delivery availability. Another negative is that they require a $20 minimum to deliver at all, which is unusually high compared to other restaurants nearby. It's also a mystery to me why they can't cut the sandwiches for you beforehand considering how tough the particular type of bread they use tends to be; I don't know about you, but when I'm especially hungry, I don't feel like struggling to saw my sandwich in half and make a mess in the process. As for food quality, my family and I have rarely been disappointed. Compared to their local competitors, I trust and prefer Primo over anyplace else offering a similar product. I'm looking forward to the day they finally offer online ordering, although I will say that this is the only place that hasn't sent me running in the opposite direction when it comes time to place an order by phone (that's why websites like GrubHub exist).

J M.

Yelp
I hadn't tried Primos before finding this new one is Chestnut Hill. Been here a few times already and it's probably one of the best hoagie shops in Philadelphia hands down. I've heard a lot about Primos quality and it couldn't be truer. This Primos stands out as one of the ones that bakes their own rolls multiple times a day in store and prepares a lot of their ready made items fresh in store. That's a huge plus. The flavor of the meats, cheeses, and toppings are super fresh, bursting with flavor, and blow Subway , Wawa, and Quiznos out of the water. It's so good in fact that even local shops aren't making a hoagie this good. Granted because it revolves around a lot of italian style meets and cheeses the flavor is different if you're used to Wawa or Subway hoagies. So if you're new to Primos and the full "different" flavor many Italian meets and cheeses provide, give it a visit or two to really start appreciating how much flavor is really in these hoagies. The gentleman who runs this particular Primos is very friendly and polite. He shows passion for making quality sandwiches and his staff match his passion and enthusiasm. The employees actually seem happy to be there and glad you walked in to place an order. They even offered to carry a party tray order out to my car (and I'm an able bodied young guy) just to make sure nothing spilled or dropped. Top notch service, top notch quality, and well worth every penny every time.

A B.

Yelp
Compared to the Chestnut Street location in Center City, this place is a joke. The (primo-sized) hoagies are about $2 more per sandwich and they put noticeably less meat in them.

Enid J.

Yelp
The food is great! The service is some of the worst around. Amazingly, both remain consistent... great food and lousy service. The staff is just dumb. We have been there at least 15 times and are always frustrated by the subtle rudeness and stupidity. The food keeps us coming back!

L W.

Yelp
I'm giving them 3 stars because the diablos are good, but the hoagies are seriously lacking. A basic cheese hoagie with lettuce, tomato, onion, oil & vinegar had hardly ANY lettuce, tomato or onion on it, and barely any oil & vinegar. The lettuce was brown and limp. It was one of the blandest and most unsatisfying hoagies I've had in a long time. It's conveniently located to me, and the diablos worthwhile, but I will look elsewhere for my hoagies, probably Lee's or even Wawa is better.

Terrence J.

Yelp
My first time getting a hoagie here all my friends in the hill kept raving how good it is finally I ordered a Italian hoagie I had taste for boy it was fresh and delicious and filling . I'll be eating there again when I gotta have Italian hoagie and reasonably price .plus they have limited seating inside about 20 seats

Yelp
I live in Chestnut Hill and I've been to this location probably 5-10 times since it opened last year. I'll start by saying the sandwiches are pretty good, if a little overpriced. I've never had an issue with the food. The service, on the other hand, leaves a lot to be desired. The first few times I chalked it up to the fact it was a new store, but now I just think they aren't training folks the right way and/or they don't have streamlined processes in place. I really want this to be a great place so I can frequent it more without getting so frustrated. The folks working the register are not really customer-friendly; I've never seen anyone working their smile to me or anyone else--it's a just-the-facts ordering process often with them seeming frustrated if you don't give them the order exactly how they want it or have any questions. Prep of food is reaaalllyyy slow and sometimes when it's done they don't tell you and you have to go up and ask. I mean, wait 10 minutes for two small sandwiches when it isn't busy slow. When you eat in, they've started delivering the food to your table, but they don't bring you napkins so you have to go up and reach over the counter to grab some since they aren't set out for customers. They have decent decor and a bit of a sports theme going on, but I was there at noon on Sunday and both TVs were off and when I tried to turn them on they either didn't work or weren't connected to a cable or satellite. You'd think on a football Sunday in September they might have football/Eagles on. They only serve bottled drinks, and a few times when I've been there they don't even have any cups you can use for kids (what kid is going to drink an entire giant bottle of soda or powerade?). There are no kids meal options, which would make a lot of sense. So basically what it boils down to for me I guess is that if I can call ahead, somehow magically time it right and pick up my sandwich and a soda, and get the heck out of there with minimal interface, maybe I'll frequent it once in awhile--which is a shame because I'd like a good sandwich place in Chestnut Hill where I can take my wife and three daughters once a week or 2-3 times a month. Too bad Quizno's went out of business...

Constance L.

Yelp
Place is spotless, people are friendly and sandwiches are great! Definitely worth the ride from Conshohocken!!!!! Love!
