For starters, I'm not a donut connoisseur, but because my husband IS, and we happened to learn that THIS place with its 5 star rating replaced the once beloved Stan's Donuts, well, he just had to give this place a try.
Unfortunately, I tried a taste of what he did, and while this review is based on my thoughts (since I'm the Yelper), the reality is that he agrees with my assessment, and he's usually far more positive in his reaction towards donuts. For me, I just don't physically react well to fried dough. It sits very heavily in me, and I end up with heartburn. Not worth it. Plus, it often just tastes greasy going down... but I suppose, not if it's well made.
Anyway, we tried a seasonal yeast donut that had pumpkin filling. It was "almost" really good because it was very light and airy, and the filling was very tasty. The problem, however, was that there was such a small amount of filling. It was all dough and a tiny little blob of pumpkin filling. Why couldn't there have been a considerable amount more of the filling? That's just not acceptable to me... or my husband.
Then, we also split another yeast donut, which was a log shape and had a VERY thin layer of chocolate icing on top. I think this one had been sitting a day or two because it wasn't as fresh (light and airy) as the pumpkin filled donut, and it sat heavier on my tongue when biting/chewing it. Worse yet, the icing, while evident, was very thin, so the dough to icing ratio just didn't work for us, and instead of tasting chocolate as I should have, I only tasted fried dough. I took the one bite and was done, refusing to finish it. In fact, HE ended up throwing out the remaining donuts. That's something I would do, but NOT my husband !!
Stan's, this wasn't... by a longshot. Again, I'm no connoisseur, but these donuts simply weren't to our liking.
