Best Detroit Restaurant Tamales | Eater Detroit

"Another supermarket tamale force to be reckoned with is Prince Valley Market on Michigan Avenue, where, on top of its vast offerings of produce, baked goods, and prepared Mexican fare, the store also bangs out upwards of 1,000 tamales a day during the holiday season. Purchase them ready-made by the dozen in pork or chicken with red sauce, as well as meat-free jalapeño and cheese. For the families that want to throw down with a tamale-making party at home, Prince Valley also sells all of the ingredients needed for a DIY experience." - Serena Maria Daniels

I just want to say the following, I've been shopping here for years and their cashier are absolutely terrible in exception of Arlene and Louis they are absolutely amazing! They always go above and beyond for us!!! They deserve to be more than cashiers because their customer service skills are amazing! I also pay my utilities bills and Erika Is absolutely amazing but Eric & Ashley in Customer Service are extremely rude and with no respect and manners the reason why writing this review is for those who work hard and take care of us are acknowledge and for those who don't take care of us need some lessons of how to treat people with dignity and respect!

OMG! What an Awesome experience I had just about an hour ago. It was like being with friends and family. I met Joe and Ronnie at the door on the way out. I wanted to be sure someone knew how I appreciated the cleanliness and spacious aisles in the store. It just so happens I was talking to the right person. Joe and Ronnie both are great guys. Joe gave me a little history on the store. He was 8 years old working with his dad. The location will be celebrating 50 years in September. I can see why longevity has followed them. I mentioned it was my Birthday and Joe treated me to freshly made guacamole and chips and other birthday treats. It was like spending time with an old friend. I can’t wait to see them again. You must try the hot foods, bakery 5 Stars and beyond. Ask for John in the meat department next visit, he’s a 25 year employee. I love good people and that’s who they are. Thank you Joe! Thank you Ronnie! From Ms. Joyce the Birthday Girl!! May God Bless you and the Prince Valley Family.

Google
Store is extremely clean. However, this grocery store is way too expensive. You can get the same products at Kroger or Meijer for $3.00 cheaper.

Google
The first picture is what I asked for. The second one it’s what I got. I asked before placing the order if they could do it, the young lady said “yes” she took a picture of the cake that I asked for, yet when I picked the cake up I received the second one which is a totally different cake…. I gave 4 stars because the cake was definitely good! Even the strawberry filling I didn’t ask for(I asked for plain whip filling)

I purchased a yellow cake and got a chocolate cake instead. It was 8pm by the time I realized it and didn’t bring the cake back. I called the store and asked for a discount or store Credit. No apology or no acknowledgment for the mistake on their behalf.

Google
Just popped into the market to see what they offered. Surprised & have been missing out! Good bakery selection & reasonable prices. I'm at home eating delicious bread pudding. Thanks Prince Valley!

Yelp
So Prince Valley no longer has the 'made to order' hot foods that you could order to go, sadly. They still have a lot of hot 'prepared foods' to go, which are served hot until around 7:00pm (tamales, rotisiere chicken, dinners like chicken/rice/beans, menundo soup, ribs, pork chop dinners, and several others. The in store prepared foods can be purchased cold, after 7pm, from the cold food section. Most of this food is real good.

Yelp
Love this market. Originally came for the warm tamales. Always fresh and loaded with meat . They have pork and cheese tamales as well. Stumbled upon their little takeout spot inside the market. First time eating from there and it was pretty tasty. I got an order of Flautas and 1 chicken sope. All dishes are made to order so they're super fresh and cheap too. Definitely will be coming back.

Yelp
In a pinch, this is the supermarket to go to. You will know exactly what I mean when you're missing one ingredient in your special homemade dressing, ON CHRISTMAS!!! They also serve good hot food for the lunchtime crowd. The ribs are pretty good here.

Yelp
I've been shopping at Prince Valley for several months. I have a standing Sunday rite of picking up pre-cut fruit, a vegetarian breakfast burrito (while supplies last), and a few Mexican snacks like cacahuate japones or plantain chips. There's a reason this place gets such heavy traffic. Their prices and selection are excellent, and their meat counter, deli, pre-cut fruit and vegetables are particularly high quality and well-priced. They have a hot food counter and bakery that I haven't tried, but seem to have strong following for both based on the lines and good I see others check out. The grocery has done a redesign in the last couple of months. They've moved around some coolers and made the front of the store much roomier to avoid crowds. It's a good change and makes waiting in line (and figuring out where the line is) much more pleasant.

Yelp
If you want a cake iced with no flavor and a smart mouthed response when you complain about it then prince valley is the bakery for you. I paid $95 for a cake where they misspelled my baby name and cupcakes that tasted like sh**. Second time this spot has dissatisfied my family in a year span. Never again.

Yelp
Always fresh. I gave this review over 4 years ago. Never dreamed that I'd EVER edit it but then I NEVER thought I'd be distrusted disrespected or insulted. I've shopped here for over 2 decades; even before they were modernized and improved-mainly for convenience back then. Today I was accused of stealing. Because I guess thieves steal and then go to check out. I don't know because I'M NOT A THEIF. I was so shocked and shook that I allowed myself to have my purse unjustly searched. Edgar is a horrible horrible manager and person. I wish I could change my review to 0 stars. I and my family will NEVER shop here again. I go out of my way to shop here. Mr. Joe I'm hurt livid and plain mad. I won a drawing there years ago. I revoke Prince Valleys rights to my name and likeness going forward. There's got to be a better way to protect and monitor your site without falsely accusing shoppers. Because today, I was falsely accused and then Edgar brings out some grainy video that literally shows me checking my shopping lists in my phone and planner and then putting them away. DO BETTER.

Yelp
Love this supermarket! Especially the bakery. Their sweet empanadas are too die for. Also the produce section is always well stocked with great quality stuff.

Yelp
The bakery here is fantastic. We ordered a cake for a large family party (250 people) last week and it was amazing. It was beautiful and so delicious. We had two different flavors and it was hard to decide which one was better. The price was very reasonable too. We have another party coming up this year and we will definitely be getting our cake from Prince Valley.

Yelp
If your looking for authentic Mexican pastries or snacks, Prince Valley is the go to spot. This place is onnn point. The store is always so clean and stocked up, hot food and a bakery! Best tamales and empanadas I've ever had. The guacamole is made in house and has just the perfect tang to it. I never even liked guacamole before, until I tried Prince Valley's... do yourself a favor and try it. Everything in the store, from the meats to produce, is so quality and fresh. Keep up the great experience PV, I'll be back!

Yelp
This review is only for the restaurant located in the back right corner of the grocery store. Overall, poor quality of food. Went during lunch time, surprised to see no one at the counter, and no one ordering. They have a taco special (5 tacos for $5.99), which is quite a deal. The person serving took their time getting the gloves, the carryout box, etc. She places the tortillas (corn) under the press for less than 10 seconds. I think she was new to operating the machine, because they all stuck together. The tortillas were not warm, and once they added the meat, became soggy almost immediately. Tried the pulled chicken, pullled beef (barbacoa), and ground beef. Ground beef was awful - chewy and no flavor. The barbacoa was more substantive, but again lacked flavor. The chicken was the best, but still sub-par. All the toppings except guacamole are free. If I had to go back, I would try a different tortilla (maybe flour), and all chicken. You honestly can't beat the price anywhere, but I couldn't get over the fact that all the meat tasted old and flavorless. I have heard good things about their chicken and rice dinner plates, available to go in the warmer next to the restaurant. Perhaps I will try that next time.

Yelp
It is a very consumer friendly market with great service and wonderful fruit, produce and meat dept....However whomever makes the soups and cooks the hamburger puts much to much salt in them and for people like me with high blood pressure that can be dangerous, but their customer service is great and their cashier's move pretty quickly......

Yelp
What a great bakery department, we have been getting birthday cakes from Prince Valley for birthday celebrations for coworkers. The cakes are not only decorated beautifully but are just as delicious and very fresh!!!! Very good price too for such a large cake!

Yelp
Went for the first time. They have a huge bakery section so I got quite a few name goods to try, which were way more expensive than the ones in mexican town. Got home and tried some. Yuck! Worst I ever had. I won't be back. The cookies were awful. Some tasted old some flavorless and very dry. My son said the empanada was the worst he ever had and he loves a good empanada. He then tried a cookie, immediately ran to the garbage and spit it old. Then said please never buy baked goods from here again. Back to mexican town we go. Don't waste you time and money on these. I feel cheat, I wasted good money on items which had to be thrown out. Would give no stars if I could.

Yelp
I went back a few days ago and was super impressed. Not only did they get the bottom line right, i got a few things i have never had before. The first thing was the salsa verde. I have always been scared of green food. I do not like green food.as a rule. One little sample, and I was hooked. I also never had a real empanada before; but again, I decided to go out on the limb and try them. OMG they are fantastic. They come filled with many flavors including pineapple, strawberry and too many for me to name here and at 6 for 2.59, you will always find them in my casa. I also found Kool-Aid flavors like Tamarind, Mango, Jamaica, and Pineapple. The other item that Prince Valley has is blue corn chips; something not found at E&L. They are made by Hacienda and packaged under Prince Valley's brand. Blue corn is a staple of the Hopi Indians of Arizona and New Mexico, and it is believed that Blue corn has more protein than regular yellow corn. It is fun to freak your gringo friends out by nonchalantly opening a bag and eating them like nothing out of the normal. I was surprised by all I found, and it makes me love them all the more.

Yelp
Good fresh bread and pastries. Basic grocery stuffs, and frog legs. In addition to having a really great name (and their own official seal/logo, it seems), this place is stocked with necessities - dry goods, canned stuffs, cleaning supplies, cheap pop, etc, all at pretty low prices. Though I've seen this place here for years, now that i've actually ventured on in and know what's there, it will mean i have to venture out to Meijer even less frequently, which is good. Of note was the bread section, where their moist, chewy, and warm bolillos and telera breads were just as good as Mexicantown Bakery's, and way better than the stale flour compounds that always disappoint from HoneyBee (i've wondered often if HoneyBee buys day-olds...). The pineapple empanadas were also aces! I wolfed down two. They have a really large deli, but an even larger frozen meats section. As I was looking around, listening to Naught By Nature's O.P.P. that was kicking out of the overhead speakers, one of the employees came up behind me, as though in his own trance, and said out loud (to me or to himself i'm still not sure), OH DAMN we sell frog legs?! DAMN! :D :D We both went our merry ways laughing, but indeed, you can get a bag with quite a few frozen frog legs (which looked rather appetizing actually), for $4.99. Lastly, they sell citrus at cut-throat rates (60% less than what Meijers charges), and they stock up on Jose Madrid salsas, which are probably the best jarred salsas on the planet and this, in addition to Kim'd Produce on Woodward, are the only two places I've seen it. All around A-OK.

Yelp
I'll make this clear: Prince Valley is far from the best supermarket you will find in Southwest Detroit...but they do have some fresh stuff. Living right by this area for a grand majority of my life, there has always been one pure reason to go to Prince Valley: All convenient the other supermarkets that sold Mexican products were too far when you didn't have a vehicle. If there is something you should get when you go to Prince Valley, try the empanadas (which are sometimes a hit-or-miss, but usually they get it right), or the fresh tortillas. Other than that, there are better, cleaner places that will fit your shopping needs.

Yelp
Cheap meats, veggies, and delicious pico de gallo! They have a ton of bakery goods. I have not tried the baked goods, but they look delicious! Great Mexican market to pick up items to make a delicious Mexican meal.

Yelp
I love this store. I visit at least once a week to pick up lunch. They make food right in the back and it is delicious. John - the butcher - is the a throw back to the old butcher shops. He's friendly, helpful, and always has a smile. I get my beef brisket from him. If I only need a half, he gladly cuts one for me and charges me the best price I can find. I only wish they brought back the grille they used to have out front. That was probably the best grilled chicken I ever had. You could get a whole cut up chicken, 2 sides, salsa, and tortillas for $12. You couldn't beat it. I tell everyone I know to go to this store. I prefer it to L&M, although that place is really good too.

Yelp
What rocks: Decent, fresh food, reasonably priced, presented in a convenient and attractive setting WITHIN the city of Detroit. It's no secret that good supermarkets are hard to find in this town; the big chains have all bailed out, or else they send all their second-best products to their urban locations. Prince Valley makes it possible to get quality groceries again, not to mention excellent fresh-cooked Mexican food that's a match for some of my favorite area restaurants. Awesome cakes and pastries too. I appreciate that this company's management bothers to pay attention to what their customers want and need, and consistently offer quality products at fair prices, which is much better than most of their competition can say. Detroit needs more stores like Prince Valley.

Anthony B.

Yelp
This market has the best meat cuts in Southwest Detroit. The store is very clean, especially for a grocery store. The management and cashiers are very friendly. They have a pretty wide selection of foods, drinks, and spices. I would prefer this store over most others.
