Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fountain – A Quiet Tribute in Kensington Gardens
During our recent visit to Kensington Gardens, we made a stop at the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fountain. Given Princess Diana’s legacy and the significance of the memorial, we arrived with high expectations, imagining something more majestic and imposing. Instead, what we found was a modest, modern tribute — one that emphasizes reflection and accessibility over grandeur.
The fountain is designed as a large, oval-shaped stream made of 545 pieces of Cornish granite, with water gently flowing down both sides before meeting in a calm pool at the bottom. It invites people to walk around it, touch the water, or even dip their feet in on warm days — which many children and families were doing. The interactive aspect of the design encourages a sense of community and peace, in line with the spirit of Diana herself.
Still, it left us a bit underwhelmed. While the symbolism of inclusion and movement is admirable, the overall appearance felt quite plain, especially when compared to more traditional royal monuments. There are no statues, floral arrangements, or towering structures — just a flowing loop of water in a grassy open area.
In the end, although we appreciated the quiet simplicity and message behind the fountain, it didn’t quite match the emotional impact or visual elegance we had hoped for. That said, it’s still a peaceful stop in the gardens, especially on a warm day, and meaningful to those who remember Diana's kindness and legacy.
