Chinese Restaurants Open on Christmas Face the Busiest Service of the Year | Eater

"A multigenerational, family-run Chinese restaurant founded in 1972 by an immigrant chef and rebuilt at its current 89th and Wornall location in 1981, it is known for Northern Chinese and Szechuan–American dishes cooked to order (with appetizers like dumplings, crab rangoon, and wontons handmade daily). The longtime head chef plates every entrée himself from a wok of constant high flames, and the kitchen operates without a POS system—orders are shouted in and finished rapidly—creating an intense, theatrical service that the family embraces. Signature items include a house spiced crunchy beef, Peking duck, lobster in garlic sauce, egg rolls and dumplings (often made with beef tenderloin to accommodate Jewish diners), and a devotion to adapting dishes to customers’ preferences. The restaurant also caters weddings (mostly Vietnamese and Cambodian) and has developed a Christmas tradition over the last decade, turning the holiday into a massive, reservation-driven operation with separate ordering protocols, early carryout cutoffs, and several thousand seasonal items prepared for service; extended family and grandchildren staff the operation. Throughout, the place functions as a community gathering spot—families have returned there for generations for birthdays, weddings and funerals—and the staff pride themselves on attentiveness, hard work, and preserving a legacy of feeding multiple generations of customers." - Nina Yun

Great food, large portions, outstanding service, nice atmosphere. When people in the parking lot stop you, telling you all the best things to order, it says a lot about the restaurant. We had a lovely meal.

Google
Good Chinese American spot! We got the more meat heavy dishes like crispy beef, Hunan chicken, and some fried pork dumplings. Delicious and our leftovers were too. Went here as a kid and recently returned. Their menu has stayed the same and it is very consistently good. Family owned and they are always so kind to us!

Really enjoyed this hidden gem of a place. I’ve lived in the KC metro area my entire life and have never been here until recently. The staff is friendly and the place just has that very authentic feel to it. Lunch portions are HUGE and not a bad deal at all for $12. I got the spicy triple delight with egg drop soup and an egg roll. Flavor was great on everything. And the food came out hot and fresh.

Google
The food is delicious! I drive about 3 hours just to eat here. Everything is made fresh including every sauce they serve except Soy Sauce. This restaurant has been open since at least 1982 , so the building is old but very clean and the waitress are attentive and eager to please. Authentic Chinese food that is absolutely delicious! Highly recommended this restaurant.

Google
Singapore noodles will revitalize your love for flavor. Black bean 🫘 chicken will give you the hug that never came from your favorite aunt. Beef flat noodles will make you wish you lived in Mongolia and fished for the elusive Taimen with a fly rod each day. Eggrolls are just flat bitchin’ delicious and crab 🦀 Rangoon are made with real crab, scallions and cream cheese…go figure. The owners are so friendly you feel like they actually want you to know the essence of happiness that only exists if you genuinely put passion into your work and care about your product and have standards that eclipse the mundane confines of most peer review. Five stars is a paltry way to acknowledge what they have done for food and families in their area!

What a gem 🥰 I tried 4 (!) different preparations of duck last night at Princess Gardens on 89th & Wornall (near absolutely nothing else), and we had a excellent dinner. The Peking Duck is their crowning glory and it was delicious. Sam carves up duck like he does it 50x/week because he does! Sue led us to this dish, insisting we would miss out on the true possibilities of duck without it and she was right. Housemade Mandarin pancakes and plum sauce paired with cracklin duck skin put it over the edge. The crispy orange duck might have been tied for my favorite though! Fried duck bites (like really savory fried chicken - think confit then fried), tossed with veggies and an awesome spiced orange sauce. I'd go back just for this. We also tried spiced duck and roast duck. All kinds of veggies tossed in, but we wanted to try the spiced green beans too. Oh and because we were very hungry when we sat down, we got 2 orders of crab rangoon (for 7 of us) and DEMOLISHED them. So creamy and satisfying. The food was great. The decor is charming (if showing a little wear). But the staff made the experience. We had attentive and hilarious service and I hope to go back again to try other dishes from their 11-page menu!

Google
This, by far, is some of the best food we call Chinese cuisine I've ever tasted. Do they havel food like chicken feet, or pigs elbow or some of the food I've tried over the years? No. But they know their audience and cater perfectly to them. From the crispness of the egg rolls to the spicy Sichuan chicken, everything was well made. I'm saddened to hear they will close in 2024, but every time I visit Kansas, this is my go-to.

Yelp
I was greeted when I walked in the door, asked for a menu for take out. My food came out hot and fresh. My god was so good I would recommend this spot for anyone

Yelp
Princess Garden is by far one of the best places in KC to get Chinese food! We got an assortment of entrees shared between five people. The portion sizes were more than enough and we had plenty of leftovers the next couple of days. Some dishes were on the saltier side and the seafood dishes didn't seem to be made with the freshest ingredients. However, the chicken and beef dishes were delicious! I highly recommend those for entrees with the fried dumplings and soup for appetizers!! There is plenty of seating inside. Despite how crowded it was, I feel like the noise level was well controlled and we were able to hold good conversations even with people across from us. The servers were extremely nice. They checked in frequently and split our checks perfectly even though we probably made it more confusing than it needed to be.

Yelp
Fried rice was obviously old and reheated. Taste like dirt. Staff looked bored and unfriendly. Mongolian beef tasted like sticky slabs of shoe leather and uncooked onions. Crab Rangoon tastes like old grease and the filling had no crab meat inside. Just cream cheese. Soggy, and cold. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY!

Yelp
1. No menu offered- The waitress didn't even give us a menu, then looked at us sideways when we asked for one. We've been there before, but why assume, and then, have an attitude when asked. The waitress didn't seem to mind giving any other customers a menu... 2. Disgusting Sweet and sour chicken- you can't get more basic than that. It was a new take on it, I can say that. They clearly use store bought sauce, and just let the pineapple and carrots stew in the sauce all day, or however many days it sat. Gross! 3. Overcharged bill by almost $8!- I get that inflation has hit everyone hard, but why over bill your customers, esp the regulars? Red flag on the play. No excuse, the waitress has been working there for YEARS and clearly knew what she was doing. My poor elderly father was too nice to speak up and just paid. 4. No receipt- again, more attitude when we asked for a receipt, and she never brought it. We had to ask the host as we left. Seriously, can it get any worse? Madam waitress: it's time to retire from waiting tables since you clearly hate doing it. Princess Garden: Do better. I am utterly disgusted by that waitress's behavior. Shame on you for allowing this poor quality of service, food and behavior. To all: look at your check BEFORE you pay!

Yelp
The absolutely best Chinese Restaurant in Kansas City for over fifty years! DELICIOUS FOOD, GENEROUS PORTIONS, HARD WORKING STAFF! A KANSAS CITY TRADITION! Lunch specials include soup, appetizer, and main entree for under ten dollars! Open Christmas and holidays! There is a private party room which we've used for graduation parties and birthdays! ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS CHINESE RESTAURANT !

Yelp
A classic staple in Kansas City that never disappoints. I had the crispy beef and it was delicious. I ordered it not spicy so it was basically like a mild General Tao's sauce. Very flavorful and I truly appreciate the fact that they still use real mandarin pancakes and that flour tortillas. Good service, reasonable prices, sufficient parking and great food.
google avatar

Yelp
We have eaten here for years and they never disappoint. Serving sizes lend themselves to leftovers and the food is just as good the next day.

Vicki V.

Yelp
Princess Garden is the best Chinese restaurant in the Metro for dinner (not necessarily lunch.) Seriously. The original chef came from China, and it is rumored he worked in the Emperors kitchen as a youth. I believe it. Now chef has passed on, but the family have continued the restaurant because it has so many followers. I understand the family is having difficulties keeping it open as a family run business. I understand----SO OPEN A SCHOOL FOR CHINESE COOKING PLEASE!!!! My neighborhood Chinese restaurant tries hard, but they really don't know how to cook or season Chinese food. It's a shame, when the expertise is right in town, but not being given to the next generation of cooks. I am afraid that the genius of Princess Garden will be dead about the same time I will be----I hope I don't live to see it.

Yelp
Our family has been going there for a long time and have always been treated well. Food is always fresh and the service is great.

Yelp
Solid Chinese restaurant. As a note they are closing during the summer on M/T due to staffing I think. They have a whole section they don't use and had to kill the dessert menu since it went bad with COVID. Dinner Peking duck for $45 and cut at your table, solid. Comes with the choice of how to serve the remaining duck bones, we ended up with soup which was nice and hot and a giant bowl. Probably enough to feed 5-7 people there alone. The wraps looked to be hand made . We also tried the crispy beef brisket which wasn't on the menu but once the chef saw the picture, he could make it. Delicious, a little spice, crunch and sweet all at once. Comes with rice. If anything the restaurant was too dark. The paper on the table didn't cover the whole table so the inside part of the cloth showed through, it needed a bit of cleaning. Chopsticks on request, water filled promptly. A lot of people had cocktails and shared versions of what I can only assume are Cancun inspired drinks with four long straws... No more dessert menu. They had one, COVID hit and they had to throw it all away.

Yelp
What a gem!! I can't believe this has been around the corner from our home and we just went there for the first time last week. We felt like we were dining with family! Incredible selection- pre order the Peking Duck/ they carve tableside! They also happened to have fresh lobster (which is unusual)- delectable! Can't wait to go back.

Donna R.

Yelp
always very good food and service, food is hot and ready when you call for pickup. staff is nice.

Yelp
AMAZING!! Today was my first time coming here and WOW did they blow me away!! Amazing service along with the most friendliest workers AND customers. The food was EXCEPTIONAL!! I'd have to say this place just went to the top of my restaurant recommendation of all times. The ambiance, style, and uniqueness were beautiful! Thank you for such an amazing unforgettable experience! I will definitely be brining friends and family here!

Yelp
I have only ever gotten takeout from here and while it is better than your typical fast food Chinese places, I feel like I could have gotten a nicer meal for the same price. I ordered the Spiced Crispy Beef with Pancakes, Singapore Noodles, Egg Rolls, and Hot and Sour soup, and my bill was $50. It would be nice if they actually had a website with an online menu so I can see prices of what I was ordering. Most of the pictures of the menu on yelp are over 5 years old and definitely are outdated. The portions are large, but I definitely ordered too much for one person, as I will likely have enough for two or even three meals. Unfortunately I wasn't told the price over the phone when ordering so maybe then I would have realized this was too much for one person. Onto the food, The highlight of my meal were the Egg Rolls and Singapore Noodles. The egg rolls were really fluffy and had lots of veggies, while the noodles were really light had a nice curry flavor with chicken, beef, and shrimp. Service and atmosphere are great and the staff is all very friendly. I will likely continue going here for when I get that Chinese takeout craving, but next time will know to order less.

Barb D.

Yelp
Great family run restaurant and the best steamed dumpling in KC. A neighborhood tradition for more than 50 years

Aveauna A.

Yelp
Was looking for some good chinese food in kc. They don't do delivery, which is fine, but the service, decor, and the dishes alone were worth the drive. I haven't had anything else to compare it to, but i'm def going back!!
google avatar

Jolanta L.

Yelp
Most authentic Chinese restaurant in town. They are here for generations. Every single staff are so nice and friendly. The Beijing duck is the best here! If you haven't try, it's a must. We have been coming in this restaurant decades. It's sad to hear the news they are going to close down soon this year. Strongly recommended if you haven't tried!

Mary M.

Yelp
Have eaten at Princess Gardens for many years. Had dinner there tonight. No one can equal their egg drop soup, crab rangoon, dumplings, sesame glazed walnut chicken and chicken fried rice.
google avatar

Zilong C.

Yelp
Service was good but the food was mediocre. The roast duck tasted pretty bad. The duck was probably cooked a while ago and then reheated.
google avatar

Patrick S.

Yelp
Absolutely amazing!! After 53 years in business they definitely know what they're doing! Fantastic food, service and ambiance. Every dish is made with love and care! I lived in China for four years and finally found this delightful restaurant. I won't go anywhere else.
google avatar

Yelp
The food and drinks were amazing. Very tasty. The prices are low too! Service is quick and attentive. Check them out!
google avatar

Claire S.

Yelp
The food is incredible. The service is so personable my family has been going there/ ordering there since I can remember and they still know it's us when we call just by the sound of our voices. The orange chicken and spices green beans are heavenly...

Yelp
I can't believe I have lived her 20 years in Kansas City and never tried this place. The family cooks and serves this place. We love duck and ordered the Peking Duck. It was cut and serve by the owner. The rest of the off menu items we ordered came out perfect for our family.
google avatar

Meggie M.

Yelp
We *so* wanted to love this locally owned spot, but that's the only reason I'm giving 3 stars. We've been disappointed many times. In our latest order (and our last), we ordered 3 apps and 3 entrees. With the exception of the egg rolls, it all lacked flavor (even the chili pepper entrees had no heat or spice) and the texture was basically mush.
google avatar

Kimberley W.

Yelp
Moo Goo Gai Pan and hot n Sour soup was what I ordered. The Moo Goo Gai Pan was bland and when I picked up the order they replaced the hot and sour soup with egg drop soup‍. I do not care to have the egg drop soup and I did try it but it was bland too! I was not asked about the substitution and would not have gotten it! Very disappointed and will use the Amazing Paradise Garden restaurant from now on!!

Nicole G.

Yelp
Princess Garden is a staple in this home. The location is always an experience every time we go and the food is so delicious and fresh!

Yelp
5 Stars!!!!! 5 Stars!!!!!!!!! Came here last night with some friends that have lived in KC all their lives but never even heard of Princess Garden. i told them that this is the real deal, authentic, old school Chinese restaurant. I've been eating here since my parents took our family here to eat and I am 64 yrs old, lol. Well, it did not disappoint, let me tell you. Let's just start with the staff. We had a short wait and they would check in with us periodically to let us know when we would be seated. We got seated, water poured, I asked for some lemon and the girl I asked for it from came back and said "sorry, we are out of lemon". A minute later another guy came over with lemon. Yeah, they could have just left it alone but the extra effort to satisfy a customer was 5 Star! Our waiter was very courteous and gave us plenty of time to select our dishes, checked in with us, while other waitstaff refilled our glasses of water and cleared dishes. 5 Star!!! When we dining the manager came over to ask how our meal was and then another woman asked us how our meal was. 5 Star!!! When we were leaving, we were thanked for coming again and again as we walked out by various employees with smiles on their faces and genuine gratitude and friendliness. 5 Star!!!! I can't remember another business of any kind that provided this level of customer service accompanied by true gratitude for being a customer there. 5 Star!!! Now, let's go to the meal. We ordered hot sour soup and won ton soup to begin with, delicious. Egg rolls, large, crisp, old school, not these little spring rolls that are limp like other restaurants serve. Crab Rangoon. OMG, FULL of delicious cream cheese filling, large, flavorful. THE BEST crab Rangoon I've ever had. Moo Shu chicken. Not only delicious but the largest serving I've ever had at any place I've eaten at. Plenty of leftovers. Shrimp in Lobster sauce, again delicious. Chicken with bamboo shoots, mushrooms and now peas and Sinapore noodles, bountiful and delicious!! My friends were in awe and even said "I can't believe I've driven by this place over and over and never knew it was there". No wonder they have been there for 52 yrs!!!!!! I am a foodie, I love Chinese food, I don't easily give out 5 stars to any restaurant. Are you getting the picture??? LOL, GO THERE AND EAT!!!
google avatar

George G.

Yelp
we ordered a basic menu items to see what they would taste like. we are not into deep fried chinese food. might as well have a donut with general tso sauce on it. first time at this location, owner said they have been there for 50 years and were having a group of people in that have been attending for 40 years. all take out cashew chicken very good unlike most we had nice portion size and flavor unlike many mooshoo chicken again portion size good , dont care for the wrappers not rice wrappers again flavors were great curry chicken im not into spicy so this was just spot on. all three were addictive had to keep going back for more. will return.
google avatar

Mandie B.

Yelp
Hidden GEM. The staff couldn't have been more attentive and personable. Our server was hilarious and answered all questions we had. They had two full pages of tiki drinks mostly priced at about $8! Our group tried several different ones and all were fruity and delicious! The apps and entrees were all piping hot and so tasty. 10/10 recommend!

Peggy G.

Yelp
Excellent family business, great food and reasonable priced. I worry they won't be around much longer since their children are not interested in running the business. They are down to working only 4 days a week.
google avatar

Scott K.

Yelp
I chose this restaurant for my birthday dinner because of the rave reviews of the Peking Duck. I was underwelmed. The duck skin was deliciously crispy, but not much flavor. The handmade pancakes with the duck, onions, and sauce were fine. Not wonderful... fine. My biggest disappointment was not getting the additional preparation from the duck. After the duck was carved tableside, they took the bones back to the kitchen to never return with duck soup or fried duck bones as other reviews shared. I guess they sold our duck soup to another customer???
google avatar

Robert J.

Yelp
This restaurant is a staple to Kansas City, and I know that they have plans of closing it down in the next few years, but it will be greatly missed... Their egg rolls are better than any eggroll I have ever had / and specially anything I can find in Kansas City!
google avatar

Effie C.

Yelp
Best Chinese food in Kansas City. I love their Triple Delight, Combination Fried Rice, Egg Rolls, and Crab Rangoon. The food is Always Fresh, and the portions are large with lots of meat and seafood. The staff is so friendly and they always thank you for patronizing their business. I hope this restaurant stays open forever.

Al H.

Yelp
Got takeout from here about a month ago. Did not tell the Family where it was from but they could tell the difference in quality from our closer to home place we go to. Very good food.
google avatar

Stefani D.

Yelp
I love Princess Garden. I can't wait to dine inside there again one day. (Note: They are serving people inside now, but I'm not ready to eat inside at any establishment yet). They are practicing all the right precautions and I feel this restaurant is very safe. For now I get carryout. When I do eat inside a restaurant again- this place will be one of the first places I will go! :) Their food is so great! It's a classic Chinese-American restaurant with that nostalgia touch, like restaurants that just aren't around anymore. Think 1980's or 70's. Beautiful decor, amazing drink menu including big drinks with rum on fire, huge menu with so many choices, and greasy but in a really good way! The staff are all so friendly and nice. They have the best egg rolls in KC! They are huge. Highly recommend their Cashew Chicken, Fried Rice and Kung Pao dishes. Thank you Princess Garden for all that you do! We love you!

Ali T.

Yelp
I've been coming here forever. A true family favorite! They will often make dishes not on the menu and are always accommodating to substituons which I greatly appreciate as a picky vegetarian. I love that they're family owned. I always get the general Tso tofu, extra crispy with broccoli!
google avatar

Amy E.

Yelp
After reading a lot of amazing reviews, we finally decided to try this neighborhood spot tonite. We ordered to go, ready in 25 minutes! And they were ready for me. They came out and greeted me at my car, promptly took my payment and very shortly I was on my way home with a giant box of food! We tried the crab Rangoon after reading so many rave reviews, and so glad we did. They were hot, crispy and full of delicious gooey, cheesy filling. We also tried the Spicy Green Beans - do NOT miss these. They beans were fried until lightly blistered, sautéed with sliced garlic and green onion. I couldn't stop eating them!! But onto the entrees. I got the cashew chicken after seeing a yummy photo - and the photo didn't do it justice. Tons of cashews and very tender chicken. Our other entree was the Crispy Orange Duck. My boyfriend couldn't wait for this - although with so many duck items on the menu it was hard to choose. He was thrilled with the duck. Crispy, boneless pieces of duck and chopped up veggies in the fragrant orange sauce, plus they made it without onion for him. Can not wait to finish all the leftovers we have and then try more menu items soon!! You can definitely see why they've been in business for over 50 years!
google avatar

Howard A.

Yelp
Chicken Fried Rice, the taste is great, especially with the pineapple added for the dinner menu. The service is also great. The servers are quite likable. The ambiance is nice due to the Chinese artwork.

Jack P.

Yelp
Ordered Mushu beef spicy with extra pancakes. Totally bland, no plum sauce, three torn pancakes. The dumplings had no flavor and were thrown away. No sauces or hot spices provided that might have improved things. . $50 ripoff! My wife said her chicken lomain was good. Hope this was just a bad night, because we frequent this restaurant based on past good experiences.

James M.

Yelp
Food was awesome. Hot and delicious. We had appetizers and a meal. They have the BEST eggrolls anywhere and the service was fantastic as always. Best kept secret in Kansas City. If you are looking for great food in a comfortable atmosphere, this is the place to go!

Jan S.

Yelp
I LOVE this restaurant. Been going there for years. The food is consistently the best Chinese anywhere. The people are friendly and service is great. The people remember you and appreciate your business!!

Choi M.

Yelp
Charged us extra money and offered racist explanation. They told us our total was $60 but refused to provide an itemized receipt. Per the menu, we got a Peking duck of $40.95 and a Mapo Tofu of $13.95, which added up to $54.9. So we wondered how come the total turned out to be $60, and only to be told that since we were Asian, the duck they gave us was the Asian style which costed more. It was unacceptable and ridiculous! If you have to go eat here, please double check your receipt
google avatar

Jessica T.

Yelp
Was greeted with a friendly face as we walked in and was immediately sat. It wasn't too busy when we got there but eventually filled up a little. Seems like a popular place for take-out, that's where most of the the traffic was. Our food came quickly! We ordered the dinner for 2 with fried rice, cashew chicken, and beef with veggies. It was a ton of food! Definitely had to get a to-go box. The food itself was fine. I wasn't blown away but I also wasn't mad. Heres the deal: everyone needs their Chinese restaurant and because of proximity, I think this is ours. I wasn't mad about the food and on those nights where I'm just needing Chinese food, it's a great choice.
google avatar

Sharon W.

Yelp
I went here months after a getting recommendation from a friend originally from China on his favorite Asian restaurants in KC. As I stepped inside Princess Garden, I admired the usage of traditional Chinese art and a lucky color in China, red, being used in the interior design. The food was flavorful and probably the most authentic Chinese cuisine I've had in the Midwest, which I missed being from the East Coast. The roast duck was something different to me, and which I opted for in place of the Peking duck since my partner and I wanted to try the other dishes. The brown sauce in the roast duck was tasty and it was convenient not having to worry about biting into bones. My favorite was the spicy eggplant and my partner really liked the ma po tofu, where you can really taste the Sichuan peppercorn. The Beef Chow Fun had some noodles that were bunched up, but otherwise tasted fantastic. Overall, glad that I finally made a visit here!
google avatar

Brian A.

Yelp
They've been around for decades because they just know what they're doing. Having moved away years ago, it was great to be in town and see them still thriving. My daughter loved the cashew chicken, and while the walnut chicken wasn't what I expected (it's different from Denver) it was good. The crab Rangoon were awesome. How they can keep this going for years to come.
google avatar

Julia E.

Yelp
Went to PG during the lunch hour. They have really inexpensive lunch options. It starts with a HUGE egg roll and a chicken wing. I didn't try the wing but the egg roll was pretty good. I went the safe route and tried the sesame chicken as my entree. Service was slow but very friendly staff. I would go back again and try a more traditional dish.

Lee T.

Yelp
Best Chinese food ever. Every dish is a joy. We have searched for years trying to find hot and sour soup and crab Rangoon that competes with theirs and NEVER have found anything comparable anywhere. Another favorite is their Hunan beef. The Peking Duck is carved and served table side. Both are wonderful. All of my family members have their own personal favorite dish, which they swear is the best (and which they do not share), This is a family restaurant in the truest sense of the word, and they treat their customers as if they are family members as well. I could not recommend this restaurant more highly.
google avatar

Betty L.

Yelp
Got carry out here after the ice storm. I have to say... that parking lot got super slick as did everywhere else I am sure, but my car could not make it up the incline. The construction on the main road made it difficult to get into the parking lot. It was a late CNY dinner for me. I ordered general tso's chicken and mandarin noodles. Didn't take too long. They didn't use plastic. Food came in typical take out containers and then in a piece of cardboard box. Yay for recycling. I was wanting just a simple lo mien but they didn't have. I enjoyed the substitute mandarin noodles more than I thought. More than the chicken actually. I wasn't too impressed with their general tso's. The ride home might have reduced its fried goodness. I will most likely going back here to get my next Chinese fixing.

Yelp
Finally got to dine in. Egg rolls are delicious. Scallops with bok Choy were good. We loved the mu shu pork. Excellent service and gorgeous dining room.
