Why San Francisco’s 2020-21 Dungeness Crab Season Has Been Delayed | Eater SF

"Owned by Heather Sears, the market keeps an ice case full of fish and offers burgers and tacos to go; in a normal year we had a line down the street and up the hill for live crab, but missing Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s forced us to sell frozen crab instead and holiday crab sales were only about 20 percent of past years with some customers turning away." - Becky Duffett

Had one of best clam chowder I’ve ever eaten. It can certainly match the best bowl in Boston. The chowder was rich with lots of clams and served in a warm toasted sourdough bowl. The inner bowl and cap were toasted with either butter or drizzled with olive oil. It was perfect. Staffs were friendly and service was prompt. The restroom leaves a lot to be desired though. It was as nasty as any public restrooms can get.

Google
Visited the market to see what they have. Lots of good looking fresh fish. Very friendly knowledgeable staff. I tried a piece of their local smoked fish. That was good. But I ended up getting the Grilled Halibut sandwich on special. A bit pricey but very delicious. Great sauce. Good bun. I enjoyed it. Want to go back and try their BBQ oysters soon. If you either want to get some fish or crab to take home or you're looking for a place to eat good seafood this is the place. Note they close at 5pm. So, check the hours before you go. Nice covered outdoor seating and across from the distillery.

Google
Came for the BBQ oysters. They were executed perfectly. We had to try both flavors and they were both delicious, plump, and satisfying! Love this casual market where the patio is not only dog-friendly, but also pet pig-friendly too!

Google
Absolutely amazing crab roll and crab. The crab roll had chunks of crab meat - way better than the options at Fisherman's Warf. The restaurant was closed when we came, but the market & deli was open, and we are so grateful they have the deli. The desserts were also incredible; they didn't last long enough to get a photo.

Camille T.

Google
Sooooo good!! They have a café and fresh seafood to purchase at the market location, then down the road is their full restaurant. I love the clam chowder!

Cynthia D.

Google
The lobster bisque was good and warming but the grilled chipotle bourbon butter oysters on the half shell that were shucked fresh and grilled on-site were sublime! These are a definite "must try."

Jordana L.

Google
Fresh fish and shrimp available for sale, friendly staff, it’s attached to a small market with few item for purchase. They have a deli menu .

Google
We had the most amazing experience at Princess Seafood when we were visiting Mendocino and I cannot recommend it enough! First of all, the food was by far the best in the harbor: the chowder and bbq oysters were killer! But then, they went above and beyond by grabbing gluten free rolls from their restaurant location so that I could enjoy the best crab roll I’ve had. This was all thanks to WILBUR!! He made my gluten free perfect crab roll dreams come true - rolls are usually available at the restaurant, but they were closed that week for the holiday so Wilbur grabbed some especially for me when I mentioned I was hoping to come by the next day for dinner. Check out the market when you’re in the area or head to their restaurant location which I imagine is also fabulous. Thank you, Princess Seafood and Wilbur in particular! You’re the best!!

Yelp
The seafood here is so good! I recently spent a couple of days in Fort Bragg, and Princess Seafood (market and sit-down restaurant) was by far my favorite food spot in town. My favorite deli item here is the crab roll - you have to get this! It's the tastiest crab roll I've had on the west coast. The sandwich is also pretty big, and they don't skimp on the crab meat here. There's also a great selection of raw and cooked seafood here. I got some crab to-go, and it was really fresh and tasty.

Yelp
We came here looking specifically for the crab sandwich and it did not disappoint. If you've ever been to a San Francisco Giants game, then you know the crab sandwich is one of their staples and something that they are incredibly proud of. The sandwich here is similar in its freshness and taste profile. Although we found it a little more on the lemon and zesty side It's still hit the mark. It has mayonnaise, garlic sauce, and tomatoes. Surprisingly here is the bread choice. I could not say for certain, but it looked and tasted like a very soft ciabatta roll. It paired perfectly with the crab and did not fall apart, and did not soak up the sauce. We loved that you had the option of choosing your side - kettle chips, coleslaw, or pickle. We split the crab sandwich and it was a great portion for us since we were not that hungry. If you are starving, I recommend either getting your own sandwich or splitting the sandwich and getting something else. Service was great friendly smiles. The reason for the star is that it is very confusing on where to order. I was in line with other people intending to order at the market counter. A lady who just walked up, went to the register behind and waited. Someone went to help her and she ordered before four other people in line. The register is a brown wooden countertop. A good amount of seating. Not the size of Noyo or Sea Pal, but it still is right on the water.

Yelp
This was hands down the best crab sandwich I've ever had in my entire life. The crab was fresh, buttery, and lemony. The roll was the perfect crunch on the outside and softness on the inside. It was a burst of absolute deliciousness in my mouth and hubby agreed. The oysters were fresh and served with a vinaigrette. Princess is a MUST stop every time we come to the coast to beat the Sacramento heat. Also worth mentioning (although I didn't have today as it is only seasonally served) is their ciopppino. That the first meal I ever had at Princess and I still dream about it!!

Yelp
Great view of the canal, especially during sunset. It just breathtaking view over delish, fresh and so yummy dinner. The foods are very goods and with good size too and reasonable prices too. Great services by all the staff. Parking can be tricky if you're 1st timer but manageable. They have both indoor and outdoor seatings. Overall, great that we founded this place for our one day trip to the area.

Yelp
We were in town on vacation last week. My husband picked out the hotel. It happened to be down in this harbor area. So many fresh seafood restaurants in this little area. Some close earlier than others. I love all of these fish market and pier smells. We had just gotten back from glass beach and having lunch in town. But I really wanted something fresh from the fish market. They close at 5 pm. I had been looking for post cards to send back to family with no luck. They had post cards here but fancy ones from artists. I bought a quarter pound of fresh cooked crab meat. That was my snack before dinner. It was very yummy. Everyone working there was very friendly and helpful. That had many other things different dips and sauces. A local was in buying fresh caught fish from that day. I can not remember now what it was called.

Yelp
Had a fantastic lunch & a beautiful view here! You walk up to order & sit out on the patio looking over the harbor view out to the ocean. We ordered the crab sandwich & it was perfect. So much crab! Very lightly seasoned which is how I like it. & it's on a nice soft bread. Plus the clam chowder is a classic. & who doesn't love prawn cocktail? Mmmm loved this spot.

Yelp
I specifically came to this place for their oysters, especially since they had grilled oysters for a reasonable price. It took about 10-15 minutes for my order to come out, but it was well worth it. They have a covered patio seating area in front of their building where you can watch them grill the oysters. The meat of the oysters easily separated from the shell, and there was a good amount of meat per half shell. They had two dressing options available for the grilled oysters: lemon garlic butter and chipotle bourbon butter. I ended up getting 1/2 dozen grilled oysters with 3 of each type to share with my boyfriend. I really enjoyed the chipotle bourbon butter, which had the perfect combination of tang and spice that paired well with the saltiness of the oyster. One of the lemon garlic oysters had an unusual, foul taste.... It tasted much more raw in comparison to the other ones we had tried, which was a disappointing one to end our meal with. Other than that bad apple, the other oysters were pretty great, but I don't know if it would be worth the gamble. Perhaps it had not been cooked long enough on the grill, as we did arrive 40 minutes before closing.

Yelp
Such an amazing casual spot for fresh seafood. The dining area has a great harbor view. You can see adorable seals playing in the water. Bbq oysters were delicious. I got the garlic lemon and the chipotle oysters. We also got the ahi poke bowl, prawn bowl, rock fish plate, and clam chowder. I left super full and happy. What a great spot to start the day off in Fort Bragg! They also have a good selection of beers, wine, and cider. The employees were all really helpful and wonderful. A must try when in the area.

Yelp
Second trip. Don't think there will be a third. What oyster place calls a "half" order is 3 oysters and a "full" is 6?!?!?! Anyone else would call a full a 12 dozen and half 6. Don't we all use the same counting system and references? . Don't get me started on the menu.
google avatar

Cliff S.

Yelp
Friendly customer service. Awesomely fresh seafood. What else do you need to know? We came in yesterday for oysters for our evening appetizer. While I made my own chipotle bourbon butter, it turns out they also sell a chipotle bourbon sauce. It's a wonderful flavor bomb to add to the grilled oysters after the shells have opened.

Yelp
Great seafood place. Local North Coast Catch in season and Imports from Alaska, Washington, Oregon

Yelp
I can't believe I have been sleeping on this place! If I had known how amazing they were all this time, I would have been coming here since 2008. The staff members genuinely love their jobs; they are incredibly helpful and friendly. The gentleman who assisted me tonight was very informative and went above and beyond. I ordered six raw oysters and some Dungeness crab, which they grilled with garlic and butter. It smelled fantastic! They even grilled some buttered bread to soak up all the delicious crab juice. I also purchased some locally made wooden earrings shaped like jellyfish, which are beautiful. I absolutely recommend this place. It features local art and cool things to look at. There's a tree adorned with ornaments and covered patio seating, so you can stay dry while enjoying your meal. Plus, they can prepare your order to go, as they did with mine, and everything is fresh. The ambiance is fantastic!

Yelp
What a gem. Bbq oysters were fresh, both seasonings were delicious and super affordable! We will definitely be back for these alone. The uni was 25$ for a small pack but sooo worth it. The girls here are badass but come early they get busyyyyy! The clam chowder was a 3.5/5 it barely had any clams in it. The crab sandwich was also ok
google avatar

Denise L.

Yelp
I wanted local fresh seafood; either shrimp or crab. And on arrival, exactly what I hoped! A delicious crab roll sandwich with chips! Very satisfied
google avatar

Mari S.

Yelp
satisfied my incredibly intense appetite. after a dubious day of driving, this bowl saved my life. not only did i approve of this bowl, but i questioned why the market was not more popular. the crab roll was delectable in its own way--the freshness of the crab, softness of the roll, and the spice complexity completed me.

Yelp
Got some fresh sushi grade Ahi to take home and sat on the deck of their boathouse location (due to a recent fire). Great views of Noyo harbor, live music, fresh oysters and the smell of salty air. Great way to spend an afternoon.

Ann F.

Yelp
The delicious and simply wonderful "Grilled rock cod plate" is definitely my favorite.

Miya C.

Yelp
We enjoyed everything: oysters, clam chowder, rockfish sandwiches, crab Louie salads and the patio over the water is great.

Nic L.

Yelp
We came here to eat on several occasions and enjoyed both experiences during a recent trip thru town. When we came in on a Tuesday, everything was perfection. The barbecued oysters were incredible! Originally we had ordered the chipotle flavor and a younger gentleman provided a bbq sampling of the garlic lemon and they were so good. It caused us to return and re-order upon re-ordering them on a Friday. They didn't taste anything like they did originally. It was a slightly older gentleman who did the BBQ that day. You will notice from the pictures that they hardly had any garlic if any, and no lemon flavor. Other than that, the fresh crab was impeccable with real butter and garlic on the first visit. The crab sandwiches were so so... they were supposed to be served warm and the meat was still very cold. They do have an amazing clam chowder so miss it! Bonus, they are pet friendly! We will definitely return when we are back in town.

Aliah M.

Yelp
Staff were nice, the food was good! I got an order of the clam chowder and half garlic/chipotle grilled oysters. The chipotle is more sweet than spicy, the garlic was amazing. Would definitely recommend and return! Got a dozen oysters to take home. Yumm
google avatar

Xiaoxi W.

Yelp
Definitely a hidden gem, should I even tell everyone? The oyster is the fattest I ever have and the best part? Almost half price compares to the price in the city. Next time when I crave oyster, I probably plan a trip here. The clam chowder as well the crab bread is so good, the sourdough is so soft and crab meat is a lot. The service is also almost, I like how friendly they are. Come before any YouTuber make then famous. Otherwise, you will wait a long line.

Yelp
1. Fresh seafood daily! 2. No need to go the restaurant around the corner if you need your lobster bisque fix - they offer it there! 3. The staff is super helpful when talking about preparation or serving seafood. 4. Wonderful sundries collection. I even bought a doormat there recently. 5. Bonus for being a woman-owned, woman-staffed, woman-operated business.
google avatar

Camille Y.

Yelp
Love coming here for their fresh oysters! Great spot to just hang out and grub on some tasty seafood. Their clam chowder is excellent but their lobster bisque was just alright and was a little too thin for me. Their employees are all super nice and helpful. The last time we came here it was packed, there was no where to sit. Came around during lunch this time around and there was plenty of seating. It was nice having the place almost to ourselves.
google avatar

Nancy Z.

Yelp
Great spot to buy fish, oysters, crabs and Uni! Friendly and knowledgeable staff. They even sell crab dips and other sides.

Yelp
delicious lingcod sandwich and cold beer in a cool location! will return next time i am in the area.

Yelp
Stopped in here to try the crab roll sandwich. It's the best crab sandwich I've ever had!!! Anytime I visit the area I'll be sure to stop in for sandwich and seafood. On our last day we bought seafood to bring home with us. Everyone loved the fresh crab, oysters, mussels. Wish we could have brought more back with us. I would like to give a big shoutout to Wilbur for going out of his way to help us with our order both days.
google avatar

Honey O.

Yelp
We stopped in for barbecued oysters after our ride on the skunk train. The oysters were barbecued for us. We got the garlic and the chipotle oysters. They were so delicious. It was raining, but the staff accommodated us and put the umbrellas up over a table by the fireplace. We felt like VIP. Great customer service and ambience will definitely be back..

Yelp
After a long drive from the Bay Area we really wanted to take a seat and have some light lunch. I'm not familiar with Fort Bragg but my man is and he took me down to this cute little pier area where there are a lot of restaurants to choose from. The market was almost closed for lunch but we made it in just in time. They were out of some stuff so we kept it light. I loved the look of the fresh fish that you could buy in the case. Quite a few people were buying to go home home and BBQ or cook for a large family groups. I chose to go with some crab dip and a bowl of Lobster Bisque to split with my man. On the side I bought a box of herbed crackers to use with the dip. For my son I bought a can of these awesome sardines lightly seasoned with lemon from Spain. My son loves sardines, he's 11. I don't know why, he just does. Their Lobster Bisque was excellent. The crab dip was perfect in every way. Paired along with the little salted crackers it was such a wonderful little snack. We sat outside on a slightly cloudy day with the breeze coming from the Pacific. Quite the serene little spot to indulge on the freshest gifts from the Sea.

K A.

Yelp
We bought some crab and local fish to cook. Staff was very friendly and fish is very fresh. Will visit again to get our fish.
google avatar

Marylee S.

Yelp
We sat outside and gobbled up terrific clam chowder, grilled oysters with garlic butter sauce, French bread, seaweed salad, and a jar of pickled green beans. Fabulous food!!

Yelp
We love to visit Fort Bragg and we try to explore everywhere we can and every business that makes camping memorable for the little ones. I walked into the Princess seafood restaurant's fish market and told them to give me a lesson on oysters. This place has excellent customer service from the moment I walked in. I was on a mission to learn about oysters, and they made it super easy. There are small ones and big ones that they get from a local farm and the larger ones are easier to cook and have more meat. They are the same price. The guy behind the counter suggested we only need butter and garlic and they have it there. I bought some local hot sauce and drove straight back to the campsite where we cooked them, and they were so good. This will be a regular stop for us when we are in town. I think we will try and bbq some of the other things they have there and make it a dinner.

Martin G.

Yelp
The crab sandwich I ordered here was the best sandwich I've ever eaten in my life and I'm 72 years old. It was so good that I ate ones for lunch and dinner the same day. I enjoyed how the delicious, relatively thin bread let the crab flavor stand out. I look forward to eating more on future trips to Fort Bragg. The potato salad was excellent, too. Very friendly service. I enjoyed talking with Kathryn (Catherine?) about Fort Bragg and Caitlyn about about her job on a fishing fleet that supplies crab and other fresh seafood for the market. The fleet is operated by the owners of Princess Seafood Market and Restaurant. The market and restaurant are separate, but located in the same attractive area near Noyo Bay.
google avatar

Brady P.

Yelp
Nice market located in the Noyo Cove. The fish they sell there looks very fresh. The staff were friendly and helpful. There is a small patio area to eat with a nice fire pit and clean tables. The Crab Roll was the best I have ever had in my life!I day dream about it every now and then. The Lobster Bisque was great too. Definitely give it a try in Fort Bragg!

Yelp
Food 5/5 Ambience 5/5 Customer service 5/5 You order at a cash register, get a number, choose a seat, and they bring your food out to you. The whole process was pretty simple and was under an hour for a Sunday late morning. I was concerned that this place was going be overcrowded. We got: - 3 oysters on the shell (they had pacific oysters that day) - Wild grilled prawn - Prawn cocktail - Crab dip - Crab louie sandwich The oysters, crab louie sando, and crab dip were pretty good. I don't eat grilled food often so I really appreciated the flavors in the grilled wild prawn dish. Both prawn dishes exceeded my expectations as most places list "prawn" but they actually use shrimp...or even worse, frozen shrimps...at steep prices. It was very meaty and firm. Frozen shrimps are fine, I just really don't like the practice where business say they they sell something, but serve you something closely similar to it and use the other name to mark up the item higher. The ambience was good, just go through the doors by the cash register to find some additional outdoor seating. You might see some cute seals swim by and pop their heads out.

Dana N.

Yelp
YOM! Amazing grilled oysters. Fresh fish. Crab sandos. Friendly service! Beautiful outdoor seating. Note that Princess Seafood also has a larger restaurant at the end of the road with more options - I think everyone needs to visit both. IMO best seafood in Fort Bragg. (This is also a women-run operation. woohoo!!)

Yelp
Fresh fish, shellfish and seafood stuff. Reasonable price for their products. Most people come here on accident thinking it's the restaurant. The restaurant is down by the street by the overpass bridge (drive, don't suggest walking from the store to the restaurant. It's further than it sounds). I was there for fresh oysters and sea urchins. The oysters are sourced from Humboldt area, a little north if Mendocino County. Oysters are solid! People before me was there for oysters too. They sell oyster knives as well. On par or better than Taylor Shellfish Co based in WA. Employees are very upbeat and nice. Cons: Parking may be difficult to find close by store depending on how busy it is and time of year. Lots of car traffic, watch out for cars if crossing street. If want fresh unprocessed urchins, get their early or they will run out. June 2022 they were $10/each. Processed ones was $20. Market closes opens late 11:30am, closes early, by 5PM. Wished they opened earlier, like 9am so out of town people can shop before heading out.
google avatar

Angie H.

Yelp
Fresh seafood! Everything I've tried has been good! I like that they are different from a lot of the other places as nothing is fried. If you want fried seafood- there are other great places around the area too. Love the view here and live music they often have.

Wanderer M.

Yelp
I love and frequent this place, mostly for the superb five-star fresh seafood counter. They also offer limited eat-in items and outdoor tables with a nice in-the-harbor vibe. Today I ordered half a dozen oysters on the half-shell, and paid the up-charge for "freshly shucked". Four of the six oysters were in shreds and most were milky. They tasted good enough, but were not at respectfully prepared. I also ordered garlic bread. OMG -- the two slices seem to have been literally dunked fully in melted butter. I used three paper napkins to try and dry them out and they were sill soggy. Gross. I also ordered a cup of chowder but they forgot to enter it. Especially when paying top-dollar, I think it's reasonable to expect more care to be taken, especially at a place that otherwise has a great reputation.
google avatar

Mikayla M.

Yelp
Great fresh and smoked salmon. Super fresh fish and great customer service. Love this fish market!
google avatar

George P.

Yelp
This spot is great! Amazing food, comfortable environment, and great staff. Impressed with the level of understanding of our seafood industry and the fact they catch much of their product. Thanks for always making me feel like family whenever I swing by.
google avatar

T B.

Yelp
Nice little spot in NOYO to enjoy a sunny day and checkout the harbor. The clam chowder is really good. The crab plate is decent and comes with some tasty butted bread. Has a small little outdoor seating area. Will try the sit-down restaurant next time.
google avatar

Judith S.

Yelp
It's always a pleasure to support Princess Seafood! Female owned and operated, the freshest fish anywhere. I was hoping for a fresh cram and shrimp cocktail, but it wasn't on the menu... oh, no! So the young lady taking orders came up with a great idea. She weighed out some crab, and some shrimp. She added cocktail sauce and a lemon. Voilà! Missing the celery, but I had my fresh seafood fix. Thank you to the lady who took time to figure out a way to help me out.

Alexandria E.

Yelp
Usually love this place, however the past 2 times the salmon we bought from the fresh fish case was bad, inedible. Super fishy, smelly, clearly not handled well. The girl behind the counter admitted it was last year's catch. It's too bad because I love this place! But twice now have dropped around $26/lb for rotting salmon and had to throw it out.
google avatar

Ernest T.

Yelp
Great crab and having it cleaned was awesome. We also came back for sushi grade tuna and had to wait until shipment arrived. It was so good and well worth the wait. Of course we all had to have shirt and hoodies. Love supporting local and women in business.
google avatar

Sarah R.

Yelp
We went there today without knowing they were closed, and the woman who was there sold us fish anyway. An unexpected kindness she did not owe us. We bought salmon that was caught only hours earlier. It was the absolute most delicious salmon I have ever had. Fresh, delicious fish. Wonderful service.

Cindy D.

Yelp
Such an awesome spot! We went here when their restaurant down the road was closed, and it was so amazing. The crab sandwich was 10/10 and loved their lobster bisque. The employees were so friendly and their BBQ oysters looked so yummy, can't wait to come back to try.
google avatar

Vikky S.

Yelp
Fresh oysters are highly recommended. The tuna sandwich was amazing. Stuff are friendly.

Jole V.

Yelp
Absolutely 5 star service and friendly. My wife and I just moved to fort Bragg and slowly we are trying the town out. Ordered the clam chowder bread bowl(wife) and the crab roll(me) potato salad was so good and the crab roll is on par with a lobster roll
google avatar

Eric H.

Yelp
Clam chowder was ok. Lobster bisque didn't have much in the way of lobster. Service at the market was rude. Sent us down the street to their restaurant when it had already closed for the day and they had no remorse when we returned and pointed out their error.
