A great spot recommended by my friend from NYU Tisch, perfect for unwinding. You don't need to understand art; you just need to feel it. The staff are incredibly professional and nice.

An absolutely essential place to visit when in New York City. Escape the massively busy and noisy streets outside to this mecca of arts and culture. Everywhere you turn are books, fanzines, postcards, art editions, vinyl records, CDs, just everything inspiring and fascinating. Seats are situated so that you can sit there and enjoy the publications and lose track of time in this magical place!

A standout destination for anyone who loves arts and culture. The store is packed with a vast and wonderfully curated selection of both renowned publications and independent zines, to limited edition prints and collector items swag. Very easy to lose track of time and budget here.

Amazing place with amazing books and zines! Definitely a must visit

A wonderful selection of unique books, zines, and art. These books very much fit within the “art book” category, with some opening up from a cover made of cardboard into an accordion binding, while others consist of maze-like infrastructures that make the contents complimentary to the art of the binding itself. They have beautiful prints in the back, with some for sale. And a wonderful little “book machine” that gets you a sweet little bobble that holds a mini zine! I highly recommend adding this place to your to-go list if you’re new to the area or just stopping through.

Fantastic place for all types of art books, zines, and other publications. I’m glad they had publications from sternberg press as well. Lots of artists monographs, prints, and more.

New york is so lucky to have this kind of bookstore that celebrates all forms of stories and arts. Utiopia for zine-lovers!

I discovered Printed Matter one day while walking around Chelsea visiting various art spaces. In this context, maintaining the operation at this location is absolutely a smart, brilliant idea as it attracts art nerds who also happen to be book connoisseurs. For me, the curation and selection are unique enough to place Printed Matter in its own category. Think of extremely limited press runs combined with high quality presentation and intriguing subject matter. No NYC bookstore tour would be complete without a stop at Printed Matter.

This little book shop is so cool! Carrying zines, art books, and prints by local artists, this store is really great if you're looking for a unique coffee table book or posters for your walls. Everything is a little pricey, but considering that it supports local artists, I think it is worth it. You can find a lot of unique books here that wouldn't be found anywhere else. Definitely recommend checking it out if you like zines or unique texts.

Magical specialty press location. Nothing like it. We always visit when in NYC. Host organization for an excellent art book fair in Los Angeles.

Printed Matter is a very special place. The fact that they even exist as a non-profit and have actually thrived for decades is amazing! I feel like they finally landed in a really good location in Chelsea that's generous in size in order to accommodate their outstanding collection of artist books, artworks and special zines. I could spend all day in this place, happy and content. They have deep collection of artist's monographs which are increasingly hard to find. One of my absolutely favorite artists is Richard Prince. They've got a great selection of his older show and exhibition catalogs as well as artwork by Prince for sale. I've been coveting a photograph Printed Matter collaborated with Prince on years ago but it's way out of my price range now. It's still nice to see in person in the upper loft area wherever I visit the store. Love this place!

Truly fun shop if you like original artistic zines, stickers, tote bags and tees! Well worth a stop. Lots of great inexpensive prints too.

This bookstore is like no other. A sparkly gem in a city full of unique bookstores. Eclectic and well curated. Enjoy.

excellent establishment for books, book lovers, and everything art book. they always have newly published artist books and independent publishing based projects. they also host art shows in the gallery in the back of the space. ive seen very cool shows back there by Gary Panter and Uranium Press. great place for book makers and self publishing lovers!

Waited in line for nearly 2 hours to enter an event a friend and I had purchased tickets to only to be told that they had oversold the event and would not be able to let any more people into the building. The tickets were sold for a timed entry slot that we arrived well in advance of, so when we saw the line we assumed that they were making the switch from the previous entry time to ours but it seems like they were not actually observing those times. We were told by security that refunds would be granted online but my emails have gone ignored and they have been deleting and restricting comments about this issue in their Instagram page. There were well over 150 people in line at the point that they started telling us no one else would be allowed in and they scammed us all out of our money and time. I love the concept and what they do here but after this horrible treatment I would never go back.

I did my first order about a week ago. They sent an email and said they had to cancel since an item wasn't in stock. They told me to reorder the item they did have in stock. So - I did. I reordered the item and added a couple other items as well. They shipped it, but sent the wrong other ITEM that I had previously reordered. They have been claiming it's my fault and have not taken any responsibility. I'm working with my bank at the moment to get a refund on the wrong item sent. I've been more than willing to work with them, but they been completely incompetent. Based on other reviews it seems weird that I have to post this. But Craig, who is one of the sales people I have dealt with has been absolutely ZERO help. If you have to deal with Craig, know that he will be of zero help whatsoever.
