Chicago’s Best Coffee Shops | Eater Chicago

"Along Kingsbury, the Lincoln Park limbo where Whole Foods and Off Color Brewing are located lies Printer’s Row Coffee, which opened a new flagship — a cavernous space with specialty coffee drinks and a small patio. It’s an ideal coworker option, but be aware — the Internet connection isn’t always reliable." - Ashok Selvam

Where to Escape Chicago’s Air and Water Show | Eater Chicago

"This new coffee shop is on Kingsbury, near REI and Whole Foods. The espresso offerings are top notch, and the space is wide open with plenty of space to have a conversation. There’s also limited outdoor seating in front." - Eater Staff

Google
Small coffee roaster and cafe, serves up high quality beans with a small selection of pastries. Staff are very friendly and the coffee is very good. Menu is small but has some great options. The roaster is out in full view so you can see everything being made. There is very limited seating inside, maybe 10 people tops. Very worth your time to grab some of their in house beans.

Celeste Morgan

Google
I definitely recommend the chill brew: cold brew, oat milk, amaretto. The blend of almond, oat, and coffee was divine. The staff was friendly, and it was neat to be able to see the big coffee roaster machine up front and center

Kevin Florian

Google
A little overrated at the moment. Coffee was so light/weak, vanilla lattes tasted like just flavored milk. Cashier was curt, not the friendliest... The barista laughed at my order. I was the only client there. We visited Chicago from Indiana. Try the French bakery across the street... Far better.

Google
Great little corner coffee shop. All the employees I’ve interacted with have been so kind and helpful, and I’ve enjoyed both coffee and matcha drinks! Plus the pastries are delicious. My only wish is that they were open later in the day, so I could get my afternoon coffee fix!

Lindsay Clark

Google
Superb, small coffee shop that knows how to make delicious lattes, matcha, & drip coffee. The food is limited but excellent some of it made by 'Dan the Baker' which means it's extra yummy. We love supporting these friendly baristas and that it's in our neighborhood. We are grateful to always have their lattes to start many of our days off to a great start. Dog friendly shop!

J Xia

Google
Great coffee place with quick service. The real kicker is that they serve pastries from Dan the Baker on the weekends. No need to drive down to west loop to get your fix on some of the best pastries in the city.

Eleni P

Google
I’m sure their coffee is great but the matcha was undrinkable and expensive. I spent close to $9 on a matcha that just tasted like milk. I would skip the matcha if I were you.

Google
I had been going to physical therapy down the street and I noticed this little cafe on the corner. Today I went in to check it out. I was greeted as I walked in. I ordered an iced oat-milk latte. The barista offered to bring my drink out to the patio for me because I was on crutches. I appreciate the extra care and consideration! My latte was delicious and was the perfect way to start my day. I will definitely be returning in the future!

Yelp
An inconspicuous neighborhood coffee shop on the corner of Lincoln Ave and Altgeld St. The cafe utilizes most of its space, so there is mainly standing room with a few high chairs along the small counter to rest your coffee on. The cafe allows dogs and I was greeted by two puppies. The staff is very welcoming and seems to know the regulars, both four and two legged. I ordered The Chill Brew which was unique having Amaretto syrup which really comes through with that almondy-honey flavor.

Yelp
Both the macademia nut iced latte, and the pastry by Dan the Baker were excellent. Even the baristas were great! Honest, knowledgeable, AND friendly. Only minus is the limited seating.

Yelp
Not sure how I've never posted a review for this spot since I come here almost every week. Great coffee and friendly staff. I often buy beans for home as well. There are a few tables outside I love to sit at when the weather permits. Limited seating inside but there are a few stools and they do have WiFi. Welcoming space for all and definitely worth a visit!
google avatar

Yelp
Based in one visit Very nice cafe. Not allot of space to sit and work but they have a counter where a number of people can stand and have coffee. Just like Italy. The place has a nice vibe and the staff was friendly noting this is based off one visit. We had a chilled Brew and a hot brewed coffee forgetting what the roast was, but it was good. The area the cafe is located is a great place to stroll. Cool signs on the wall and a grinding machine is present. There are some shelves where they sell merchandise. It may be worth removing the shelves and adding a few small tables and chairs to make it seem less cluttered / improve the Fung Shui. Worth a visit.

Yelp
Strong coffee, pretty quick lines and such a reasonable price! Only $3 & change for a small coffee with oat milk! Another dollar for a medium! Being in the heart of Lincoln park, I was blown away by the value. Most of the seating is outside and there is easy (paid) parking on the street. They have Dan the Baker on Monday and I think Saturdays. But no worries, Vereznay patisserie is just across the street! Grab a cup of hot coffee here and enjoy a quality pastry nearby.

Yelp
Now that I've lived in the area for a few years now, printers row is a staple in my week. The ownership and employees remain outstanding, and I swear it's the best matcha in the city!! Pastries occasionally switch it up, but currently Dan the Baker on the weekends, and fun donuts during the week. Their baker partnerships are always amazing, though! I will always return, and I encourage all to support them on these bone chilling days that they stay open! And pro tip - You get a discount for bringing your own reusable cup! :)

Yelp
I love these gritty, real, down to the basics coffee roasters. It's small and you are sitting with the roaster, the people who work here are nice and laid back, the neighbors in the know drop by while walking their dogs. It's super cool and I had a wonderful flat white while getting my morning going. Support this place!

Yelp
A friendly and cute neighborhood coffee shop. The barista poured our lattes carefully to make sure the milk got incorporated with the espresso well and created some latte arts even when there were many orders (and they were all to-go). I absolutely love that attitude! We got a lavender latte, a regular latte, a cold brew and a drip coffee. The lattes were rich, especially the lavender one was not crazily sweet to overpower the espresso. The cold brew and the drop were decent. Everything was of good consistent quality which I think is the key to be a successful neighborhood coffee shop. I would definitely pick this coffee shop next time when I visit the neighborhood.

Yelp
Got the iced Cinnamon Toast Crunch latte. Really good! Giving it a 7/10! My husband got an Americano and liked it too
google avatar

Max W.

Yelp
Pretty sparse here. Very open seating plan. coffee was fine. No food options. Service was adequate. Hard to find a plug and hard to figure out the Wi-Fi but I think that's part of the vibe Don't need to go back.
google avatar

Yelp
Such a fun spot to get coffee and sit in their patio! I ordered their birthday latte since they were celebrating their 6 years and it was delicious! It also came with a mini confetti cookie which added a delightful touch. The service was quick and friendly. They also had coffee items or apparel that can be bought, which would be a great gift. Highly recommend to check it out!

Yelp
I can't believe it took me this long to visit Printer's Row! I've had their cold brew at FMSC, and honestly it's some of the best cold brew I've ever had! But this latte was also to die for! Truly a great drink. And the atmosphere was so cute! The staff was kind and helpful and the cafe was very welcoming. Make sure to visit Printer's Row next time you're in Lincoln Park!

Yelp
I stopped at Verzenay on the way to work because a kouign amann sounded great. I was going to pick up a chai latte there, but happened to see Printer's Row Coffee kiddy-corner from it and figured I'd try theirs instead. Their chai was okay... it wasn't as flavorful as I would have liked so I'd give them another chance if I was around just to see if it was a fluke. It's a bit awkward that you have to tell them how much you want to tip (rather than type it out yourself) on their screen, but I get that it's a COVID precaution so it's ok. Alternatively I suppose you could buy your coffee online. They also have a bunch of other merchandise, like coffee accessories, t-shirts, and so on. I'm really appreciative of their COVID precautions here! Even in May 2022, when almost everywhere else has abandoned COVID mitigation measures, they're keeping them in mind. They have a sign outside the shop that says to wait until you're wave in, and the sign directs you to line up on one side if you're ordering there and another side if you've placed your order online. There are also signs recommending masks and tell you to wait at the decals inside as your item is being made. Thanks for keeping both your staff and your customers safe!

Yelp
Stopped in for a quick coffee and croissant. Amazing service, nice storefront and delicious coffee and almond croissant! Definitely recommend!
google avatar

Natalie G.

Yelp
My first time going here and I love it! The staff is super friendly and the shop is very open. Right now, they only do take away and have a small patio outside. They wave you over to come on in :). I tried their iced chai latte and it was very flavorful and not sweet to me. I love how you can actually taste the spices vs over bearing spice flavor and sweetness. The blueberry scone was soft and not too sweet. I'll come back to try their other pastries and drinks! This cute coffee shop definitely hits the spot :).

Yelp
Absolutely LOVE this neighborhood gem. So welcoming, kind, and always eager to give recommendations on drinks and pastries. I love grabbing an iced hazelnut latte with the oat milk (iced coffee always!), but i'm a sucker for their seasonal flavors too! Nicole and the team have created the perfect, cozy shop and their merch is too :) This place is a must visit!!

Yelp
My friend and I went here this past weekend. We saw that it had good reviews so we were excited to try it. To give you context, we have never been one to write reviews and we are typically quite forgiving/prone to just ignore micro-aggressions. As soon as we walked in, the cashier working at the front was incredibly rude to us; there weren't many people in the cafe and they confused both our orders twice. Confusing our orders is not at all an issue, but when we politely corrected them, we were met with nasty looks and a cashier who spoke down to us unnervingly patronizingly. After being talked down to, my friend decided to take the wrong order anyways to avoid further conflict. We noticed how kind and friendly they were to other patrons - specifically white patrons. These patrons were also greeted differently when they walked in. I understand that Lincoln Park majorly lacks diversity, but the way that the cashier looked and spoke to us like garbage was absolutely unacceptable. This was not even prime rush hour- so I cannot imagine what this behavior would have been like otherwise. The only kind person to us in the entire cafe was also the only POC working.
google avatar

Ali B.

Yelp
Only a few people can be in there at once so you wait for them to wave you in to enter. I got a jasmine sanche iced tea, which is a green tea. It was super refreshing! My sister got the same. Our mom and my sisters friend got chai lattes and liked them! Really cool spot. We loved the pet pics on the wall too.

Shaina K.

Yelp
Horrible cold brew coffee. I let the barista know it tasted rancid and that it was probably bad and they refused to refund me or make me another drink. I would not recommend this place especially for the cost. The employees are also pretentious.

Jiaxi G.

Yelp
Great latte and drip coffee with friendly staff. Cozy space but a bit too small, as the roasting machine and some logistic stuff took up almost half of the space. It's a great roastery too, offering some nice single-origins with good value for the price.
google avatar

Kate O.

Yelp
Super quick coffee bar with lots of plants :) I really enjoyed my ice latte with whole milk
google avatar

Rebecca H.

Yelp
Of course due to COVID you'll wait outside to be let in and there's no indoor seating. But this place is so good. Great vanilla iced latte. Friendly staff. Quiet little corner to sit and enjoy outside. This place in a gem.
google avatar

Jaime R.

Yelp
Super friendly service and delicious coffee! Had a cold brew with oat milk and vanilla and it was really good. Very strong flavor but was still smooth. Will be back to try more!
google avatar

Mina M.

Yelp
Visiting from Detroit and this place was a block away from where I stayed. I heard they roast their own beans so obviously it was the first place I went to when I woke up! The woman who helped me was so very nice. Not to mention, they were playing my favorite band when I walked in! I got a bag of Brazilian (which I haven't tried yet) but my oat milk latte is delicious. Will definitely be stopping back in tomorrow :)

Sandra Z.

Yelp
New favorite! Love the vanilla latte, they go the extra mile and make homemade syrups which make all the difference.
google avatar

Francis R.

Yelp
Smaller coffee shop, yet hip and chic. They carry their own coffee beans and can make all your favorite caffeinated beverages whether you're looking for that chai latte, a cold brew, or just a regular cup of joe, Printer's Row got you covered. Not a bad spot to post up and whip out the laptop as they have a larger communal table complete with succulents and charging outlets. I did a cold brew which was strong. Literally felt it kick in within minutes of the first sip and sitting down and starring at the black and white accent wall had me trippin' a bit as the caffeine buzz hit. Anyhow, a nice change up from the usual Starbucks if you're looking to support local business serving up small batch coffee. 'Til next time, cheers!
google avatar

Parissa A.

Yelp
This place is super cute and the baristas are so nice! We got a drip coffee, cold brew, and a home made pop tart. The pop tart wasn't too sweet. It was all great! I will definitely go back to this neighborhood gem.
google avatar

Jordan C.

Yelp
I was in need of a coffee and wanted to try somewhere new. Printers Row did not disappoint! I ordered a vanilla iced latte with oat milk, which the barista recommended. I wish this was closer, because I would certainly go back!
google avatar

Tracy Y.

Yelp
I love living so close to Printer's Row. It's one of my favorite places to grab a coffee or tea. They have had excellent covid protocols. The staff is always friendly. I always enjoy their seasonal and special flavors.
google avatar

Rob G.

Yelp
We are so thankful that Printer's Row is in our neighborhood. We visit here regularly for the exceptional coffee. Typically buy the ground coffee bags to-go so that we can enjoy at home. Our favorite is the Peruvian with its bold flavors hazelnut, pepper and tomato. We also have purchased the Airspace canister from PRCC that keeps our coffee fresh and looks great in our kitchen. Keep up the great work PRCC!
google avatar

Crystal K.

Yelp
I stopped by here and ordered the cardamom & clove latte with oat milk. The flavors were well balanced and complemented each other. If you want to splurge a little, get it with oat milk. It adds a nice touch. The seating is a bit limited, there's a communal table, one small table, and bar seating. I need to come here again to try the pumpkin pie latte before the pumpkin season phases out.
google avatar

Aisha V.

Yelp
How cool is this place! I appreciate that they still have some semblance of a social distancing protocol in place. I was welcomed in with a number of smiles and hellos! I love the look and feel of this place. It spoke to me as a person who appreciates working class spaces. Industrial spaces. Theres beauty in a craft--and one of my favorites is the craft of creating good coffee. I was on a coffee adventure that day and had already had two lattes by the time I landed here so I decided to just get some beans. I got some great suggestions from the ladies running the place and took a couple of bags to go. Located in a cute ass burb of Chicago, if I lived here, they'd know my name, my dogs name, and probably my dentists name. Highly recommend and look forward to revisiting.

Angie S.

Yelp
My nose followed the smell of fresh, roasted coffee beans. I was greeted by a friendly cashier. She answered all of my questions with a pleasant smile. I had to use the restroom, and it was very clean. While waiting for my latte, I noticed this big machine(roaster). The gentleman who was pushing all the buttons answered all of my questions because I felt like a kid in the candy store. Last but not least, my latte was ready, and it was one of the best that I ever had. Thanks for making my day
google avatar

Ellen M.

Yelp
Best coffee in Chicago. Beans are roasted RIGHT THERE and the coffee is incredibly fresh and delicious. Also - you can buy the beans, and I highly recommend that you do. The roast date on your bag will be just a day or two ago.
google avatar

Kai E.

Yelp
The cold brew is really good but it's more expensive than some of the other coffee shops nearby and the staff wasn't super friendly. Very cute and hip spot overall though.
google avatar

Reah A.

Yelp
Cute coffee shop in Lincoln Park! I visited during COVID, so there was no seating inside, but overall still a great place to grab your morning coffee, and plenty of street parking Round. I tried the Cinnamon Toast Crunch latte (iced with oat milk) and it was delicious. I'd definitely go back!
google avatar

Nicole S.

Yelp
In my opinion, an iced latte should come with 4 shots, though it seems they rarely do without an extra cost. BUT! Printer's Row does it right - and I had the best iced lavender latte over the weekend - with the perfect 4-shot-espresso-to-milk ratio. Highly recommend this spot!
google avatar

Kayla R.

Yelp
Best cold brew in Chicago. Need I say more? If you're in the Lincoln park area this is an absolute must visit place. Buy their beans or some merch while you're there too!
google avatar

Cassidy C.

Yelp
The Cinnamon Toast Crunch coffee is to die for!! Not overly sweet and tastes like the leftover milk. Also had a normal latte and was very pleased, overall a great spot that we will be returning to every weekend.
google avatar

Umair H.

Yelp
Really enjoyed dropping by Printer's Row Coffee as I had it bookmarked, but don't often make it out from the City to Lincoln Park. However, after visiting some friends located only minutes away, I dropped in on a Saturday evening. The venue is cozy and fun, pretty quiet so likely a nice spot to get some work done if you can nab a seat. The barista was super helpful and friendly - she made some recommendations and I ordered away. I had the iced mocha, iced macadamia nut latte for the wife, and a rasberry "pop tart" which was delicious and a great complement to the drinks. I regret not grabbing a doughnut from a local partner of theirs that makes potato based doughnuts (cool and unique differentiator). Overall, good experience and will definitely be dropping by again when in the area. Next time, I may try another one of their in-house syrups in a latte (looked like lavender was a recent addition).

Yelp
- free wi-fi - plenty of outlets - all-gender restroom - good for working (there is one community table with outlets, and one long bar area as well with no outlets, but hooks to hold bags) - come by in the morning between 8:30-10:30 am to snag a spot to sit and work! I've had this spot bookmarked for a while, and finally was able to stop by this morning to grab a cold brew and work for a bit! The smallest cold brew size was around $4.40, so a little bit on the pricier side in my opinion, but there was enough in my cup to tide me over for about two hours. Plus, the ambience and staff in here are worth the trip! I got here around 8:30am, and there were two other customers sitting on their laptops at the community table. I was having trouble logging into the wi-fi, and one of the employees noticed and asked everyone if it was ok if the wi-fi got re-set so I could try to log in. I really appreciated that! I had some difficulty, but re-started my computer and then was fine. I know wi-fi can be temperamental, so thank you to Printer's Row for helping me out! Even after more people started seeping in throughout the morning, it never felt overly crowded or too loud in there. Plus there's a lot of natural light, a clean, modern aesthetic, and a very clean bathroom with cool posters from WXRT shows. Basically, the people who run this place must be cool as hell. This is a really great coffee spot to work or have a meeting with another person!

Zestlife V.

Yelp
The coffee is great, and the convenience of the location is worth it. The service, on the other hand is rude and definitely not the way one needs to start the day. I'm sorry but if you are in the service industry or human for that matter, the least you can do is to be kind. Don't show up to work if you cannot be kind. 1. Awkward tipping experience - I'm Covid conscious and totally understand, but the rudeness alone ensured that I did not tip today. Being yelled at when you go to get coffee is not worth it. I always tip 20 pc. I do hope the owners are paying them a living wage as the coffee is not cheap. 2. Entitled staff - Be polite. Tell your customers,' could you please stand at the green circle, we are still covid conscious here' or 'would whole milk work" . I walked out of the feeling way worse than I walked in and felt like I had been reprimanded by the principal. This was on the morning of 3/8 ironically on international women's day. As a woman of color, I did not feel welcome in the store.
google avatar

Haley I.

Yelp
The macadamia milk latte was delicious! It was a little sweet which was really refreshing. I personally didn't like it more than oat milk, but still very good. Super cute inside. Pretty small but very cute & good coffee. My boyfriend loved the iced black tea.

Gabriela P.

Yelp
The coffee is phenomenal, however I find myself not wanting to go here because they block you from selecting the tip yourself. There is a barrier protecting the screen and you are pushed to have an unbearably uncomfortable experience of the servers asking you how much you want to tip. This practice is not done at ANY other coffee shop we know with this level of popularity ( ie Metric, Sawada, and Blue Bottle). I do support tipping, but the added pressure is unnecessary as COVID precautions are no longer at this extreme scale. This suggests that the business is trying to pass on the cost of labor to the customer. I hope they are providing a decent hourly wage and not maintaining this in the future. This would be a five star review if they just let me pick the tip myself!

Eric C.

Yelp
This place is trash. The regular coffee tastes like dirt. Aside from that, when you pay, they ask for a tip (why? who knows). But their pay screen is behind a dumb plastic shield, making it difficult to touch the screen. Their fix? They want you to tell them how/if you will tip so they can press the screen for you. Heres some advice: customers dont typically like having to verbalize to the cashier how they intend to tip. It is awkward and rude to make the customer do this. Now with this in mind, if you decide to go there, dont show even a modicum of annoyance at this dumb way of doing things. They apparently have a very emotionally fragile staff who are easily offended and likely wont give you the drink for which you paid.
google avatar

John B.

Yelp
Cool, trendy spot with some really great coffee. Got my girlfriend a Latte and banana bread from here and she loved it. They also make everything right in front of you and have some awesome decorations inside!
google avatar

Romana Y.

Yelp
My first two visits were average experiences, but since, this has become my favorite LP cafe! Best breve lattes and baristas. If you're in the neighborhood, and are looking to support a local small business, they're open amid the COVID-19 with restricted hours: 7am-1pm. I sincerely hope Printer's Row survives this COVID-19 market depression.
google avatar

Arelys A.

Yelp
I really enjoyed working at this coffee shop. I went on a weekday morning and there were a lot of people stopping in to grab coffee, but since many were taking their coffees to go there was plenty of room for me to sit and work on my laptop. The community table has room for six people and it has lots of outlets. Outlets are a big win! There were also a couple of two person tables and a bar like area near the coffee roaster. I'm actually not a coffee drinker, but I had a cold brew with half and half and sugar and it was delicious. I also loved seeing a real live hipster roasting the coffee onsite. WiFi was great. I was able to take video calls on it just fine which is necessary for my work.
google avatar

Lee L.

Yelp
This was the best decaf drip coffee ever. Now that I've become a decaf drip coffee connoisseur, I can tell upon first glance and sip if the coffee will live up to my expectations. The barista's pour was balanced and even; and the coffee was a perfect black with suds collecting on the side. The flavor was so delicious that I actually went back and got a bag of beans (and much to my surprise, she discounted an iced coffee for us). Partner also agreed that this was some of the best iced coffee he had ever had. Definitely check it out when visiting Lincoln Park area.
