Progressive Grounds - Review - Bernal Heights - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"The Bernal Heights coffee shop is where we go when we’re in it for the long haul. They have pretty much everything that makes it the ideal cafe—a spacious outdoor patio with shade, plenty of tables inside, and free wifi. There are also a ton of food and drink options: wraps, sandwiches, salads, and coffee, beer, and wine. Basically, if you need a place to camp out for the morning or afternoon, this spot is it. photo credit: Melissa Zink" - Lani Conway

Google
Great study/work spot! Plenty of accessible outlets, comfortable seating, and good lighting. Free wifi! And the food & drink options are also great. I had the grilled salmon lavash wrap and a chunk of cinnamon crumble cake- delicious! It was hard to choose among all the options so I will definitely be coming back to try others. Also generally good vibes and friendly staff :) Edit- I’ve come back many times since I originally posted and the grilled salmon wrap never disappoints!! This is my go-to spot for this part of the city.

Google
P Grounds is simply the best! Delicious wide variety of food from salmon to ice cream and everything in between. This spot is a neighborhood gem supporting the community as a hub 💞. Cozy atmosphere with lovely staff!

Google
I’ve been coming here for over a decade, and it’s still one of my favorite neighborhood spots. Great coffee, tasty sandwiches and wraps, and a charming space with cozy seating and a lovely back patio. The friendly staff and welcoming owner are what really makes it special.

Google
Marco, the owner, is such a friendly dude! Very cozy interior with lots of cushy seating. There's a fun hallway with lanterns that leads to an even quieter room with a fireplace. And outside, there's a lovely patio! Definitely coming back here to try more breakfast, lunch, ice cream, and wine/beer options 💚

Google
Stumbled upon this fun cozy cafe for a smoothie. I opted for a Blue Sued Shoe Smoothie and its absolutely fulfilling for a hot sunny weather. Lots of good healthy options for breakfast, lunch and dinner! Has plenty of comfortable seating space, board games AND a cute walkway that leads to a pretty patio space.

Google
Definitely a must breakfast place.

Google
Lovely vibes, returned twice during my stay in the area. Staff are always nice and the food is great! Recommend the lunch set with tomato soup and sandwich, it’s a good portion lovely for a cool day. The caramel latte is one of the best i’ve ever had.

Google
We got a tuna melt wrap and a grilled salmon wrap to go. The tuna melt was decent but it would've been nice to include some vegetables. The salmon wrap had a good amount of salmon but it was quite fishy. I like that they were able to have the sauce on the side because it would've made the wrap soggy. I also got an almond latte since somebody mentioned that it was the best one they've had. I found it mediocre at best. The amount of food was more than filling but quality and taste can be improved.

Yelp
Nice location with tons of room. There's a patio in the back to enjoy your coffee and the fresh breeze. Definitely a place to relax before getting the day started. Friendly service, you're instantly greeted as you walk in. A gem on courtland ave

Yelp
I used to love this place for the tuna sandwich and occasional smoothie. Some time back there was a big mix up with my order and I hadn't been back in a while. I was due for a return. Today I walked in and witnessed the techno dystopia it has become: Nearly every table is occupied by a single guest working on their laptops. Most didn't even have food nor drink. No one seemed to be leaving so I left, as I couldn't find a place to eat a sandwich.

Yelp
Neighborhood Bernal spot with a good atmosphere, and outdoor space. Reliable smoothies and light meal options. Nothing terribly spectacular, but hit the spot. Come on a nice weather day and sit outside! The whole place has an airy vibe.

Yelp
We came early on a Saturday getting lattes and playing the crossword. The coffee was good, and they take cash to avoid credit card fees which is great. I think it would be a good place to WFH. The space is decorated soooo cozy and the back patio is stunning with lots of green plants. The tables had seating with comfy pillows so I am a big fan of the coffee shop vibe!

Yelp
One of the neighbors asked me to meet them at this lovely location. I've been looking for an affordable comfortable yet intimate Café, and I had no idea what I was gonna come upon. Bernal heights is an adorable quaint neighborhood and it looks great. I hadn't been there in a couple years for sure. This place is charming Homie. Definitely has old-school charm. The staff are friendly and affable. Patient and treat each customer as their family. The offerings are simple and direct affordable and they serve people at a nice pace to be aware that sometimes there's peak moments in the rest of the time it's quite quiet. I ordered the egg and cheese on a croissant. The croissant was perfect. You could actually taste the cheddar it was nice and thick in the egg was light and fluffy and for the price it was a steel. My latte was nice and smooth and balanced. I love how they offered me one or two shots at the same price point regardless, and they had an easy check out they made the beverage quickly and handed it to me and then brought the sandwich to me and a beautiful cute tray with the napkin cut in half so it was easy to bite down and really taste an incredible croissant. Locals really love this destination. You hear a lot of Neighbor chatter. And it has a front and a back and a patio so we can accommodate small groups of people. I can't wait to go back and try some more fair but in the morning if I need a place to hunker down or to read, I think this is a really good choice for many people. this is the Hallmark of a neighborhood establishment people like to go there and gather and stay in. This is exactly what type of business this is. It is a hallmark of the neighborhood.

Yelp
I have come to this place often, even though it's quite a schlepp from my house, because I loved their Tuna Lavash. A few Sundays ago I was craving said wrap, so I headed over. I arrived somewhere around 4:30 p.m. They close at 6 p.m. I ordered a Tuna Lavash, and they told me the grill was already closed for the day. Closed 10 minutes before 6 o'clock I could understand, but a full hour and a half? I was furious, and I won't be back.

Yelp
A cute hidden gem in Bernal heights. The staff is very sweet and the service is great. I loved that they have ample space to sit and work, read a book or catch up with a friend. The inside is nice and cozy with cushions, and I also love their outdoor patio out back - all the spaces are very inviting and that is what I like the most about this cafe. As for the food and drinks, we have tried the white chocolate mocha here which was pretty good, kefta bagel- it was our first time trying kefta and we liked it, banana bread and smoothies. They also serve Mitchell's ice cream, wine and beer.

Yelp
This is a super cute cafe in Bernal Heights. It was a delight to discovered that they have a beautiful outdoor garden patio in the back, and also a rear lounge with comfortable pillowed seatings with large bright windows looking into the outdoor patio, and walls adored with ethnic arts. We enjoyed our lunch there, which were the croque monsieur sandwiches and the grilled salmon wrap. You ordered at the counter and get a number, and the server bring the food to you. It was a nice place for a respite after our morning hike in the hills nearby.

Yelp
My favorite Bernal coffee shop. Great staff and the owner is the best. Super friendly and laid back. Food is excellent for a coffee shop, but I mostly get coffee. Great back patio.
google avatar

Toni R.

Yelp
My friend and I came here for a quick lunch since we were nearby, I ordered Marco's chicken pesto and an iced caramel macchiato. The chicken pesto was good, except the olives that were in the wrap were overly salty. The service was fast, even with a line. It's a great cafe to get work done as they provide cushion seating area as well as patio seating.
google avatar

Melody Z.

Yelp
Ambience of this place is nice and has good seating, but the food and drink are mediocre. Ordered a smoothie ($10) plus lox bagel with cucumber and onion ($12) and the layer of lox was so thin it wasn't even visible in a cross section. Smoothie was additionally under poured and lukewarm.

Yelp
When it comes to coffee shops if you've been to one you've been to them all unless they have something unique about them. Progressive grounds stands out with its amazing menu of Moroccan inspired foods. Their sandwiches, wraps, plates, and soups makes every visit unique and has made it into my weekly rotation. Taking my laptop and inhabiting a corner in the extensive sitting area has been one of the best parts of my week. With a calm atmosphere, it makes even the rainiest day tolerable. The service is so kind, and so efficient, progressive grounds has made its way into my heart as one of my favorite coffee shops!

Yelp
Very cozy neighborhood cafe. Lots of outlets behind every single table. Nice outdoor patio behind the cafe that's shaded by nearby buildings.

Yelp
I will often make a special trip to Bernal Heights to get a Tuna Melt Wrap. They are delicious. today I came in to order one at 4:40 p.m., and they told me their grill was closed for the day. They're open until 6:00 p.m. I got to say I am very very disappointed. I will not be coming back because if I can't rely on their posted schedule I don't want to waste my time getting here only to be disappointed.

Yelp
Ok , so today i came in to get 3 ice cream cones for my kids, i ordered them and they spanish speaking older lady, who was serving us, got the first order wrong, ao I repeated it, no problem, she said sorry and went back, second time she STILL got it wrong, not sure how confusing it was, then again, I wasnt sure she understoof English at this point so she asked me to point at the exact flavors my kids wanted and only then she got the order right. All the while mind you they didnt know this but I SPEAK FLUENT Spanish and could hear her talking about me to her co workers, and laughing the whole time, beyond unprofessional. At this point I wanted to leave, but my kids were adamant. They wanted to of course get their ice cream before we left. So I was getting rung up. I handed over the cash and then she quickly in Spanish told the other coworker "hurry up before she complains about another thing again!" Mind you I am standing right in front and she is completely oblivious and assumes that I only speak English at this point, makes me wonder what more they say about customers who actually don't speak fluent Spanish. Something to think about. I mean Progressive , I am longlife customer who actually was born and raised in BH, yes we still exist, by God hire people who speak BASIC english and can understand basic orders it is not that complex. Sadly, that will be my last time going to progressive until they hire much more friendly and customer centric staff, such a shame since the owner is such a dear, and I'm really sad to have to leave this, but I felt like today was my last visit there !

Yelp
Came here to have a coffee and finish my last few work tasks for 2023. This was my first time visiting Progressive Grounds even though I have frequented Bernal Heights for years. The staff were warm and friendly. I ordered an oat milk white mocha, it was yummy but a bit sweet for me, that was my fault, I should have stuck with my usual latte. I sat in the cozy nook by the window and got my work done with no distractions. I think they have wifi if you ask, I was too shy to ask so I used my hot spot. My sister ordered their lunch combo which is a soup of the day and half a sandwich. She really enjoyed it. Love this place, I'll be adding it to my list of remote work cafes.

Yelp
Tasty and inexpensive. Easy to order, had couple of wraps and drinks. Lovely patio, comfortable seating. Will be back

Yelp
super cute spacious cafe! spent a couple hours working/studying there and it was a good experience. great lighting and many others were also there working. can get loud because lots of foot traffic midday, they got quite busy. they also have a back dining area with lots of seating. menu has so many options to choose from, food wise and drink wise, and staff are very accommodating! they were friendly and seemed very hard working. there's also ice cream so there were many families with kids coming in for a treat. the chicken à la toscana lavash wrap came out fresh and warm with a nice, crisp exterior to the wrap bread. very good vibes, I would recommend and want to come back to try more items!

Yelp
I've been a long time customer of this gem of a cafe in the heart of Bernal Heights, Progressive Grounds! I appreciate the staff team is always a welcome start to my day and the food options are healthy with fresh veggies to add to any bagel sandwich. It's right on Cortland and when I have the chance to take my coffee and breakfast for here, it's the perfect setting.
google avatar

Yelp
A sweet gem tucked away in Bernal Heights. This coffee shop offers a little bit of everything for everyone - coffee, smoothies, bagels, sandwiches, salads, and fresh baked goods/pastries at fair prices. I opted for the falafel whole wheat lavash wrap with chili sauce and pickles on the side. Needless to say, with the first bite, this place has earned my loyal support. By far, this is one of the best wraps I've had in San Francisco - the falafel felt light, yet filling and healthy. With ample seating in the front, back, and patio, a kind local crowd, and plenty of tasty vegetarian options - I'll be back!

Yelp
Outdoor patio, lots of tables, outlets, variety of food, smoothies, coffee, ice cream AND wine. Holy cow this place is the holy grail of cafés in SF!!! I got the ham and cheese wrap ($13) and a fresh oj ($6) was a pretty big portion and spend the rest of the day working / enjoying the outdoor views. This spot is super cozy and I would definitely be back to enjoy working or catching up with a friend here.

ferris L.

Yelp
Very attentive, efficient and courteous staff, nice, clean decor with a cool "small shop in the city" vibe, very good Turkey sandwich and coffee drink! I would give it a full 5 stars if it were not for the incorrect pricing on the overhead menu boards. What was to have been an $18.93 lunch (tax included) turned out to be a $22.73 lunch (w/ tax). Not going to break my wallet but still, if you are going to ring me up for 20% MORE than expected, you owe it to tell your customers of the price increase. Plus, the menu boards are written in chalk, so it would be relatively quick to make the change. All in all I would certainly go back. Just ask for the price first..... Actually, (if you hate politics don't read) with a name that includes "Progressive" in it, I should have expected the outcome to be much different than what was promised, and not in a good way )

Yelp
This is an awesome place! I came here for just a bagel- a lox bagel and it is so delicious. The environment is also amazing, I was greeted so warmly by a very kind man. He was so polite and great through my ordering process and it made me feel so welcome. The setting is also so cute, I love the colorful bench seats!
google avatar

LadyJ M.

Yelp
Since I cannot eat dairy or meat, there is not much for me here. I do like falafel wrap but I don't love it. I am able to get non-dairy smoothies so thats good. I wish they had some straight up vegetable juices though. I wish they had vegan pastries. I enjoy their gunpowder green tea. Why do I go there? I love sitting in the back to talk with a friend or get some work done or both!

Julia S.

Yelp
My favorite place to work from while grabbing a lovely lunch. I am a fan of the Mediterranean plate and basically all the wraps. Great staff, fun but quiet atmosphere, and true community feel. Coffee seems very good but to be honest most coffee tastes pretty good to me. Back patio is really nice as well and gets good coverage from the wifi for nice days too!
google avatar

Mario T.

Yelp
This is one of my neighborhood cafés and I am rooting for it. Growing up in San Francisco, this is an old school café. It does not feel like it caters to the techie, small batch coffee, avocado toast eating puffy jacket crowd. This is a working class café run by an Asian family with aging furniture, pictures of locals on the walls and an assortment of boardgames to play at your leisure. They are basic but I absolutely love their breakfast sandwiches. They are one of my treats I get a couple times a month. My favorite is egg, ham and cheese on an English muffin. They are all very basic, super market quality ingredients but it's just executed really well.
google avatar

Eric P.

Yelp
Good food, reasonably priced, and vert kind and pleasant staff greeting you with smiles. It's a welcoming and friendly place you'll want to come back to time and again, like I do from all the way across town. The clean outdoor patio sets this establishment apart as well.
google avatar

Emily Z.

Yelp
Stumbled across this place while looking for a quick place for a coffee fix! This place is easy to locate, and street parking is extremely convenient in this neighborhood. The menu is pretty extensive, with lots of food and drink options! I opted for an oat latte and it was just okay. This place, however, wins major brownie points because it's a great place to hang out or study/work. There's a spacious patio out back, and the indoor seating has tons of outlets. Would definitely come back when I need to get out of the house and get work done.
google avatar

Gabriela C.

Yelp
Excellent coffee, wonderful owners, Mitchell's ice cream, and yummy food. I am always greeted with a smile and prompt service. This coffee shop is a Cortland treasure. The coffee is always perfect. The only fault, and it has nothing to do with the management or service, is the entitled clientele that sit for hours on end on their laptops, taking loud Zoom work meetings with no regard for the other patrons. And of course, no headphones! I understand and appreciate the no laptop rule on weekends. A coffee shop is a coffee shop, not your personal office.
google avatar

clos b.

Yelp
The best coffee shop in SF for every occasion. I always like to say PG coffee, is 3 coffee shops in one. The front is your typical people watching space. The back is a work from home hub. The garden is a zen space to dream about a US road trip or enjoy a meal alfresco. My favorite meal is the eggplant pesto lavash. A must experience when you are in Bernal Heights.

R M.

Yelp
Nice place, I liked the tuna melt wraps and coffee. If I had a bone to pick it would be that the cushions in the indoor seating don't look very clean. They have this musty, borderline unsanitary feel to them. Clean this out guys, replace with bright & airy seating material!
google avatar

Andrew G.

Yelp
This has been my daily coffee spot for years now. Extremely friendly staff and owner, beautiful & sunny outdoor patio, and great food. Being nestled on Cortland makes it a fun trip to get a morning coffee and walk around the main drag of Bernal.

Elise S.

Yelp
Progressive Grounds is a real neighborhood gem. It's a special kind of coffee shop in that it prioritizes serving as a hub for the community. On any given visit, you'll run into all kinds of people: nannies with toddlers in tow, construction workers pre-shift, techies "working from home," out of towners, elders catching up with friends...all feel welcome to come and stay a while. I think people come again and again for the good coffee, fair prices, and the warmth and welcoming of Marco, the owner, and his trusty crew (shout-out to Mabel!). At least, those are my reasons! The vibe is homey. There is a ton of cushioned seating, a ton of outlets, reliable WiFi, and a beautiful outdoor patio tucked away in the back. The one downside to visiting this shop is that some patrons do not have the courtesy to keep conference calls short and quiet. I have noise-cancelling headphones, but even still, this can be quite annoying. Once I was there and two people on two different conference calls were shouting over each other to give work presentations. This is less a knock on Prog and more a knock on the manners of San Franciscans these days.
google avatar

Juliana S.

Yelp
I really like the food I ordered at progressive grounds. Their food is made with care in a clean place and pretty fast. The roasted eggplant wrap was delicious. Eggplant was roasted to perfection, making each bite deliciously tender. People that work there are polite and friendly. The chai latte could be a bit stronger. It was a bit too milky for my taste. But it's good as well. They have plenty of seats, wall outlets, and good WiFi. I recommend this place to anyone.
google avatar

Yelp
Bummer that they no longer allow studying on the weekends from 7 am to 2 pm. I won't be supporting this business anymore.

Yelp
Went here for a quick Sunday breakfast. A very cute shop in the Bernal heights area. The owner is very friendly and gave us a good smile. I got the open face sesame bagel with their homemade kefta, glazed onion, and Swiss cheese. It was delicious and the perfect start to a Sunday morning. The best part was that I didn't get heartburn from it, which was a huge plus. Would've loved for the bagel to be a little more fluffy and thick, but it tasted great. My gf got a smoothie and I got an iced coffee. The iced coffee was just regular black coffee, but the smoothie was wonderful and delicious. However, they forgot about my gf's smoothie so we had to wait 15-20 minutes for it. Will definitely come back.

Sara T.

Yelp
Solid study spot and good place to get work done. There is a front area, a back area, and an outdoor back area as well, so a lot of table space. Tons of outlets along the back walls. Wifi here was not always reliable for me, but when it was, it was great. Cute neighborhood. Easy street parking. Would come where again for more work in the future!
google avatar

Anna S.

Yelp
I love this place. The menu has a lot of options, the food is delicious, and the atmosphere is lovely. There are tables in the front of the cafe next to where you order, more tables down the hall towards the back, and they have an outdoor dining area all the way in the back. I noticed a lot of people like to come here to read or study or work which I adore. The back outdoor area has shade for some tables and cute plants. The staff is always nice and food comes out quickly. Awesome neighborhood place to eat and unwind! This time I got the grilled veggie wrap and a berry smoothie. Both were so good!
google avatar

Starr S.

Yelp
My favorite place to study and do homework! Good coffee and food, friendly staff, and comfy study room in the back with lots of outlets and cushions.
google avatar

Nancy Z.

Yelp
I always love a coffee/food place with a spacious garden area, where you can enjoy some food and drinks al fresco. The place has a great selection of breakfast and lunch dishes, from clam chowder, to smoothies, to eggs. Of course, they have a wide selection of caffeinated beverages to satisfy everyone's palate.
google avatar

Yelp
It was nice to see something other than a Starbucks or Peets but this place really isn't that Progressive in fact it's downright slow. One of the things I look for in any business is good customer service and the fact that the cashier couldn't understand my order for a small strawberry ice cream and consistently got it wrong by asking me if I wanted chocolate or mocha, then when I ask for in a cup she tried to put in a cone really bothered me in the sense that she just wasn't paying attention at all. Although this place makes you bus your own tables most people don't so it would be better if there were some towels or some sprays where people like me can bus my own table instead of just using regular napkins because each table was dirty. The orange juice that I ordered that was freshly squeezed was very bitter and not worth the price. It also seems like the cashier couldn't get anyone's order right including the person behind me who ordered a sandwich and had to clarify over and over Which sandwich they wanted because once again the cashier just wasn't paying attention. I'll give this place three stars because I believe in small businesses, and I really hope it was an off-day for that cashier, but this place really deserves two stars.
google avatar

Naina S.

Yelp
Progressive Grounds is a walk away from me so I've frequented many times before! It's a great local spot to come by for a pick me up or stay and study at. They have a lot of seating for you to bring your laptop and work, as well as access to WiFi. Their outdoor patio in the back is also very cute, a great spot to work outdoors or just chat with a friend. Their sandwiches are really solid, my personal favorite is the bagel with turkey, pesto, and cheese! They make it fresh and also let you pick whichever bagel you want and the type of cheese between cheddar and swiss. The bagel sandwich is sooo good and really hits the spot. The coffee is where Progressive loses a single star from me because it's very average. They allow you to pick from a wider menu of coffee but nothing really stands out as much. It's coffee I feel like I could make at home but am instead paying more money for. While their coffee may not be the star, it's still a good spot to get some sometimes at cause you're already getting breakfast or lunch there anyways. Overall, Progressive is a great neighborhood gem that I feel blessed to live next to and frequent. I will be taking my friends who visit and keep working here when I want a change of pace from working at home!
google avatar

Moon D.

Yelp
Progressive Grounds is a cozy coffee shop with a great backyard patio. The menu features some unique dish items, such as beef kefa, which I ordered (see photo!). Service was friendly. Would return!

Ryan P.

Yelp
Progressive Grounds has been the stalwart neighborhood cafe and meeting place in Bernal for decades. My wife and I love stopping in for breakfast and saying hi to the people who run the place. It feels like a real community hub and we really like the food!
google avatar

Shreya S.

Yelp
I came here a lot to work this past summer, and loved the cozy vibe with the pillows, and warm interior. I got a couple wraps to eat here too, which were really good! I got the Roasted Eggplant Pesto Wrap, which was a great combination of flavors. Overall, a great place to come and work, or just to chill with a good book.

Yelp
Breakfast sandwiches continued. Stopped by here, and now have gotten the breakfast sandwich from there multiple times. Really happy with this sandwich. Croissants are one of my favorite breads for a breakfast sandwich so was excited to see it as an option since sometimes I find bagels too filling. I got mine with cheddar cheese, and it's always melted very nicely and has a nice flavor to it. Been getting mine with bacon too. Don't usually get coffee since I'm not a regular coffee drinker, but I did order a chai latte once and liked it. Cute shop and located in my bf's neighborhood so it's a very convenient to grab a quick breakfast from here, especially since parking is always easy to get in the mornings too.
google avatar

Katherine Y.

Yelp
HELLAAAA outlets that make it perfect for studying/working! Lots of 2 person tables. If you walk down the hall there is another dining area and outdoor tables too. The baristas were super chill and welcoming. I liked their berry blaster smoothie. My boyfriend got their iced mocha and said it was okay. He liked my smoothie better. They have a lot of food options but my boyfriend and I just ate so we were too full to try their food. They sell Mitchell's ice cream too- try the mocha fudge ice cream.

Yelp
They have never once enforced the vaccine mandate. I hate to knock this place because of the customers but it's not just them. Tech bros talking work and taking phone calls is constant. Expect endless conversations about crypto, and not very insightful ones either. It's incredibly consistent too. Employees start cleaning an hour before closing and talk VERY loudly on their phones to friends. There is no relief or peace here. Decent coffee and sandwiches. Both call signal and wifi is terrible here, which is ironic considering.
