Where to Drink Beer in North County | Eater San Diego

"Most breweries in North County aren’t big on food offerings — they’ll occasionally have a food truck available, they’ll serve a few snacks, or they’ll give up and just let you bring in whatever food you want (if you’ve never grabbed a great San Diego burrito and gone to eat it with an IPA at a little tap room, you haven’t really lived). Prohibition, however, disagrees — the company’s food menu is as full service as they come, and even rivals the beer for quality. They have excellent burgers, sandwiches and salads, and some local favorites like carne asada fries and fried avocado (Prohibition also just opened a location up north in Fallbrook, home of the Avocado Festival). It’s interesting that such a menu comes from the homebrewers who started the place in 2011, but they know their beers too: The Derringer IIPA will knock you off your feet, and the Dirty Blonde and the Coconut Blonde are both very tasty. Prohibition is a little bit of a drive away from the coast, but it’s worth the trip, especially if you want some lunch or dinner with your brews." - Mike Schramm

Fish and chips were good, very chill atmosphere. The waitress was nice and attentive.

Google
This place is a home run. Absolutely amazing food, the staff are genuinely enthusiastic about their brews and the menu. I can't say enough how the textures and flavors were impeccable. Special note: the Golden Stout is one of the most nuanced and brilliant beers I've had in years. All the aroma and richness of a stout, but as smooth as a cream ale. A must try. Edit: returned yet again, only confirming my initial review. This place is amazing.

Google
Great food, service, and beer! This place does not disappoint. I wish they had another location in Orange County

Google
Stopped in for a quick bite to eat. Place was pretty packed along with many TVs on the wall. I ordered the reuben sandwich and it was excellent. We also ordered some nachos and it was loaded. I checked out some pizzas on the table next door and it looked delicious. Highly recommend visiting this location. Cheers

Google
First time here, so delicious! The food was fresh and so tasty. The portions were huge and the burgers and onion rings were so good. We will definitely be back. Do yourself a favor and check this place out.

Google
Had a wonderful Mother's Day at the Prohibition Brewery!!! I recommend this place for any occasion or just for a tasty beer Grandsons favorite place to eat. Tonight, I had the Baby Face Nelson burger with side salad. Big and 🤤

Google
They have a great choice of self brewed beers plus many orders. I ordered the Peach Wheat, it has just a slight touch of peach and is really good. Very friendly staff, they just do thing before you ask. The food is good and also the prices are OK. 2016 the place was selected as the small business of the year. ---------------------------------- My star rating legend: Excellent / Exceptional ☆☆☆☆☆ Very good / Special ☆☆☆☆ Above-Average ☆☆☆ ----------------------------------

Yelp
Enjoyed the Reuben sandwich with the regular fries and a Hef-U-Up beer. We arrived about 20 min before closing the kitchen, but waiters were super kind and accommodating- we ordered right away, service was prompt and professional, and the servers are as chill as their super beer :) The place is decked out with prohibition era pictures, infamous figures, etc. The check was a QR code, which was super convenient and fast. I definitely recommend coming here for a solid meal and delicious craft, local beer. Support your local businesses! Wish I remembered to take a pic of the food- but we were too hungry and forgot!

Yelp
Happy to see this place was still in business since we haven't visited the area in about two years. The food was great again and the service was great too! This time we ordered a Elliott Ness burger with the sauce on the side, Buffalo wings and Philly Cheesesteak with a side salad.

Yelp
Great food. The fried cobbler was amazing! Stay served 12 of us with ease. Large servings and great hamburgers. Great ambiance

Yelp
Sadly, I really enjoyed my wedge salad, the fries were good, the andouille pasta was good but we decided to come here bc it says this places closes at 11! Well, that's a lie and if so, you should direct customers to the front instead of having them seat themselves only to feel rushed at 9:30 but yet they close at 11! No, you guys should close at 10, if on a Saturday night you're not welcoming people. Not everyone wants to go to Ciao's. I was prepared to give five stars before feeling like an intruder. If I wanted to chill a lil after dinner, they did a great job at making you feel not welcome. It's not like it's it's a Wednesday night. So odd n my man jus told me he wanted to order the peach cobbler but they were too focused on closing and I get it. It's kinda dead in there on a Saturday night for reason. This isn't the first time they have made customers feel like this and it's apparent, but good luck!

Yelp
We came on a Saturday afternoon. We were seated immediately at a place of our choice. I wanted to sit outdoors, and we got a seat in their patio. They do have both indoor and outdoor seating available and also bar seating. There is parking available in the front of the restaurant. We were served immediately. We got out drinks. I got myself a draught beer. And later on a seltzer. The drinks were nice and cold and refreshing. For food, we got two appetizers to share. We ordered wings and nachos. The portions were large. The wings were slightly undercooked for my hubby. Perfect for me It's juicy, and the sauce was delicious on point. The nachos were great for my hubby but a little greasy for me. We got the peach cobbler for dessert, and I have to say it's the best dessert ever. It's like churros and peach cobbler rolled into one. I'm not ashamed to say that I devoured it mostly on my own :D One point to note: the patio was a little stinky. I'm not sure if it was the way the breeze was blowing. And you can pay by scanning a QR code!! That's how I paid on Saturday. Our server kept checking on us! We loved it! Will be back- but we'll probably sit inside. Btw, super dog friendly. Our dog gave them a stamp of approval, too!

Yelp
Stopped by this place towards the end of a Saturday night, there was only a few people in the building. I thought the French dip I got was damn decent, a little on the dry side but hey that's what the delicious Au Jus was for! The Cajun fries here are some of the best fries I've had hands down. The beer was delicious. Service was great. They did lose a few points for starting to shut the place down two hours before they closed and it made my Fiancé feel like we were being rushed, but like I said we were the only two customers at the time, so I understood. Overall I would definitely go back.

Yelp
Love this place!! I love their cheeseburgers and the Proco IPA beer. I've been here numerous times (even threw my husband a surprise birthday party here) and would highly recommend. Staff is always friendly and the food is great! I also love the prohibition theme the restaurant has.

Monica R.

Yelp
Customer service was horrible. The restaurant was not even 1/4 full and waiters were just staring at us. It took them such a long time to/ (15min) to give us a menu and after receiving our drinks, they wouldn't acknowledge us for a good 10 min until we decided to walk out. I don't know if we were being discriminated but I was deeply disappointed in what happened today....

Yelp
Although their pizza is no longer served, the rest of their food is home-made and plentiful, and tastes really good. They made it through "Covid, same welcoming crew, and have the same great brewery on site. They do have outside dining areas and are dog-friendly ( outside).
google avatar

Todd J.

Yelp
Enjoyed a nice lunch on the patio. We enjoyed some wings and nachos. Great lunch stop just wish they would use a better quality cheese. Less greasy but the peach cobbler was delicious.
google avatar

Scott B.

Yelp
The food was very sloppy and bland. An oversized burger does not justify an inflated price. The bacon on the burger was severely undercooked. The wedge salad was drenched in ranch that leaked everywhere and was not chopped like we had requested

Yelp
My wife and I visited Prohibition for lunch today. The outside looks like a dated dive bar but lots of parking. When we went inside it was confirmed that this is a dated dive bar. Sounds like a criticism but it isn't; it just is what it is. Gabbie was our server and she had a wonderful personality. I started with a flight of beers and they were good. Out of them I chose a glass of their Hefeweizen. I ordered the Reuben sandwich with a side of fried green beans. Both were delicious. My wife ordered the carnitas tacos but to her they were dry and tasteless. Gabbie apologized and removed the tacos from our bill. Even though it was raining, patrons arrived and went outside to the covered patio with heaters: smart move! Gabbie's service was first rate! The prices are very good here for both food and drink! Although it looks and acts like a dive bar, I rate it a solid four stars!

Yelp
Kyle and the entire team was amazing! From my first interactions with Kyle helping me plan a reunion/ party to the night of the event! We arrived and he touched base with me and was helpful! The event was great and the drinks, food and servers were awesome! We hope they appreciated the business and local support just as much as we all loved our evening! Thanks again and I'm sure we all will be back to support you - thanks so much - cheers

Yelp
A tad pricey but overall a good experience. I ordered the IPA, which was pretty tasty. I also had the pokey salad, which was delicious.

Yelp
Random stop - LOVED it! I had never been to Vista before (my bf recommended that I check out the Steam and Engine museum), but I needed food and there didn't seem to be many options. Then I saw the Prohibition Brewing restaurant with some faded paint on the outside depicting some 20s gangster and flapper scenes. I'm for that vibe. Some guy came out of the place and said that everything was really good there - so we went in and it was great. The prohibition theme was carried throughout the place (even in the bathrooms) - and the inside wasn't rundown at all - it was a nice place. A lot of cool things to look at - separate area for the bar (old timey bar) and a large indoor dining area with some cool decor. It was a gorgeous day so we opted to sit outside on the patio. Super nice patio - also had cool decor - Gatling gun lamps and coins in the tables. Server was super nice and the menu had a lot on it - was difficult to choose. We ended up having the cheeseburger with fries and they came out fairly quickly. The burger was a huge portion (1/2 lb?) and you got your choice of cheese. The fries were exceptional though. Tried both the regular and Cajun and the Cajun was too spicy for my taste. The regular fries were light but crunchy on the outside while being soft on the inside. Not greasy. Honestly some of the best fries I've had. I had the salad too, and wasn't feeling the bleu cheese dressing they served, but overall it was a perfect lunch. recommend if you are in that area. Looked like they had a stage in the back and host events there too! I noticed they sell restaurant swag, so I guess this place is a thing. Who knew?

Yelp
Good food great beer and an amazing staff. Cool place to hang out and have some laughs drinks and food.

Yelp
We were meeting up with friends we hadn't seen in some time and we're not in a rush... wit which was good as I don't think it would have been a fast lunch. Lucky for us our waitress was patient with our pace... nice atmosphere.. we sat out back at a picnic table. It is pricy for a sandwich and fries - $18 for the spinach artichoke chicken... it was light on chicken and generous on fries. Very tasty. My husband got Tommy gun Thai sandwich $18 again tasty but light on chicken - he got the side salad... Service great, atmosphere nice value brought it down to 4.

Yelp
Great service, atmosphere and food!!!!! We've been wanting to come to this place for years! I'm so glad we finally did!!!!

Yelp
Always a great place to eat. Beer is good. Usually come early as it tends to get busy. Nice patio. Plenty of parking. Wings were good but Buffalo could be spicier. Cuban sando was delicious. Beer we liked was Dirty Blonde & Proco IPA! Come check this place out!

Yelp
Went for lunch today, had house salad. Food quality mediocre at best $14.99 for a salad that was about the size of a side salad. Ice tea one glass 3.99. Service almost nonexistent only about 3 tables occupied. Waitress said hi and disappeared 10 minutes before I got a menu another 10 minutes before order was taken and another 15 for order to arrive. Tiny salad I a big bowl. Waitress never returned. She was talking to bartender or kitchen staff. It would have been nice to get an iced tea refill. When I was ready for check still no waitress had to go to bartender to get check and pay. Truly the bad part was I was there two nights ago had a burger absolutely great with a side salad simple but good. Great service very attractive waitress refilled my before I realized it was empty and that night was 5 star. I don't mind paying high prices for food that deserves it. 3 stars has pushing it for lunch. I'm sorry

Yelp
iving just around the corner, my husband and I have visited Prohibition Brewing a few times. While not our top pick, it's a decent spot in the area. Indoor seating was a tad warm with some flies, but outdoor seating was more pleasant. Food's alright, but not our favorite. Overall, it's a convenient option for a casual bite and drink nearby.

Yelp
Got take out this time to take to my in-laws. They've never been here before so we thought they'd like to try it. My mom in-law got the rueben and liked it. My wife got the coconut shrimp and it was ok - good dipping sauce. I got the cordon blue sandwich for the 1st time and it was sensational! The only truly disappointing part, my dad in-law got the French dip and there was no dip sauce given to us. So he had a French and no dip. So that kind of sucked for him even though he said the sandwich was good. Check your take out WELL and make sure all the sauces and dips are there before leaving!

Ken K.

Yelp
Our server was great. She was very helpful and polite. Plenty of choices on the menu and large portions. The regular French fries are delicious!! Our meals were very tasty. We will be back!
google avatar

Kate K.

Yelp
We always enjoy coming here. We have never been disappointed. All the burgers are delicious, the avocado enchiladas are a hit (I usually add carnitas) I love their pot pie when they have it on the seasonal menu. It's a favorite in our house!

Yelp
Great beer, great food, great service. A pleasant surprise to stumble upon. Definitely worth a visit, could easily become a regular spot with a ton of upside!
google avatar

Yelp
This place is dope. Easy parking. Chill vibe on a Sunday with NFL games going. Easy bar seating. Brew their own beer. Seems like Mexican food is a newer offering here. Tried the Taquitos and they seemed fresh made to order. Very happy about the whole deal and plan to return as soon as I am able.

Seven B.

Yelp
What a home run. The Golden Stout is one of the most impressive beers I've ever had. The staff were a delight, and the food is amazing. Definitely coming back.

Yelp
Cool place to grab a good bite and a cold beer! Clean and friendly, not a dive. An enjoyable experience

Yelp
This review is long overdue but this is a solid spot for food and drinks! The location may not be the greatest but it actually works great for me because it's close to the 76. With all the great breweries in Vista this spot here is standing strong with good beer and delicious food. If you're looking for a great burger then this a great spot and a lot of people sleep on the food here.
google avatar

Yelp
We set out to visit Prohibition Brewing because it was a pub and we wanted to knock back several cold ones.  It turned out that while this is a pub, the food they serve here makes it a worthwhile destination even if you're not interested in alcohol :-) Tip: Prohibition has a broad selection of beers on tap, and a nice selection of pub-type food available as well. The staffers here are very friendly, the beer is good and the food is even better - this is a outstanding Mom & Pop establishment; after just one visit I'm in serious danger of becoming a regular ;-) If the weather cooperates, I suggest that you drink your drinks and/or eat your food on the back patio.  There, the combination of sunshine, fresh air, and great pub cuisine is just what the doctor ordered to help you kick back and relax.

Yelp
Another amazing trip to prohibition brewery nothing better after a long hike locally than coming here for the delicious and refreshing beers, unique specials that change every week and top tier service Jade was our waitress today and kept our glasses full and our pups happy shoutout to Gabby too for being my personal favorite we sat on the back patio and the ambiance was fantastic we will continue to keep this as our post hike treat

Yelp
Prohibition is a rustic little joint in northeast Vista. It has a large bar and dining room with a fun Al Capone era vibe. For my purposes, it offered a good selection of burgers with creative names and unique recipes. The burgers are half pound hand formed all beef patties with several side choices. I ordered the Santa Fe Chipotle Burger. It's a meal sized burger with lettuce, tomato, thin sliced red onion, chipotle mayo, pepper jack cheese, Ortega Chili and avocado, I ordered it medium rare with onion rings. My friend's daughter, Abby ordered "a regular cheeseburger" with cheddar cheese, medium well. Our food was served quick and hot. At first blush, it looked awesome. My onion rings were huge, obviously crispy and looked excellent. The first bite was a juicy taste explosion, although it was medium not medium rare as I ordered, but it was so substantial, juicy and tasty, I almost didn't care. The Ortega chili was very generous, and the patty was charbroiled and delicious. There was ample leaf lettuce, tomato and red onion. The chipotle mayo was evident but not very prominent though. The sandwich held together well and was very satisfying. Abby's Cali Burger was cooked medium well, exactly as she ordered. She said it was "very good" (she's not a teen of many words). She and I both were very happy with our side choices, mine onion rings, hers was French fries. Pricing was I would say at the top of the appropriate range for an independent, locally owned, theme style restaurant, both at $17.99. There is a large menu with many appetizers, salads, handhelds and of course craft beer choices. I had been to Prohibition before, and my food choices then were also very good. This visit on my "burger snob" expedition was way above satisfied. I love these little non chain, non-fast food, independent places with creative themes, unique menus and well thought out amenities such as family friendly menus and highchairs and boosters, a separate more adult option with a lively bar in which you can eat and ample parking. This was a very enjoyable meal from beginning to end. I would highly recommend Prohibition Brewing Co. #ProhibitionBrewingCo

Yelp
Great food, extensive menu and we loved the outdoor patio areas. We went to hear one of our favorite bands and it was our first time visiting on a Saturday evening. Unfortunately the service was very poor, seemed like not enough staff to meet the needs of the customers. We had to finally go inside to order our food. Some of the servers were rude and it was probably because they couldn't keep up. The gentleman at the register (either the owner or the boss) did his best to help out and he was respectful. Very good beer and I will probably go back another time just to see if service is better.

Yelp
Stopped in for a couple brews and a sandwich. Gabby was awesome and friendly! Citropolis ipa was on point and sandwich was tasty. Great outdoor patio

Yelp
Love that place, good food and beer! Good service! Like the ambience there, too. I hadn't been there since before Covid and it is still great place to go.
google avatar

Yelp
Great food and service at this cozy and fun establishment. Always fresh food and great service I am a fan and will tell others.

Yelp
This is such a great find! The service was unbelievable! Even though we're not drinkers, we still had the best experience. I had the pastrami burger with fried egg.... Yummy!! The dessert of prozookie was also yum! Overall, this place was excellent. Family friendly and they make their beers and they had us try a coconut beer and it was actually tasty... never knew that the inside was big as it looked deceiving from the outside... Come adventure on with food (and beers- if you like that!) as this place is worth it!

Yelp
First visit here & decided to try the beer cheese stuffed jalapeños as an appetizer. We asked if they were wicked hot and the server said not so much. Holy cow I have never eaten something so painfully spicy. It was not fun. Ate half a one and set them aside. Hubby and I shared a chicken sandwich and it was meh. I had a POG flavored hard seltzer and it didn't have a lot of flavor. Server never came back to see how we were doing. So we had one drink each then left. We really wanted to like it. But the food, and the seltzer had a lot of room for improvement.
google avatar

Yelp
Happy Birthday Beth. Stout and porter were both good. Yes, we both like dark beers. LOL Tried fried avocado for the first time. I'd try it again. Our server was Mitch. His first day and he did great. Keep up the good work.

Yelp
We called ahead to pick up today. We ordered bourbon & lemon pepper wings, clam chowder, macaroni & cheese, & fried green beans. I took one bite of the lemon pepper wings & I didn't like them. I ended up eating my bf's bourbon wings, that's how bad it was. The clam chowder was ok & for some reason, the green beans seemed warm on the outside and when you take a bite, cold on the inside. I'm not sure why I can't get along with this place. 3 yrs ago, they seemed better, but I feel like since 2019, I keep having issues. My bf doesn't mind this place so he'll continue to return, especially for his blood orange beer in his growler.
google avatar

Wade C.

Yelp
The food was average, as was the decor. I expected better based on other ratings. Service was ok.
google avatar

Nicole S.

Yelp
Great beer and awesome food - a step above your normal pub fare. Open seating throughout with bar, dining room, and outdoor options. Service in the dining room is hit or miss but the bar staff is always great.

Thiem G.

Yelp
Listed hours closed at 10 pm. Showed up at 8 on a Monday and was told kitchen was closed. Used to love this place but looks like I won't be coming back.
google avatar

Tonya S.

Yelp
I would never have come here in a million years because 1) I don't hardly drink 2) it's right off vista way in a sketchy part of town 2) the outside looks questionable. We got a gift certificate from a client so reluctantly went and wow! So glad I went despite my misgivings. Super clean, cute and happening spot with a delicious menu and tons of micro brew and fancy beer menu of which i know nothing other than most everyone else seemed to be ordering and enjoying. This isnt a seedy bar, its a legit restaurant with food even the foodies will enjoy. Decidedly unhipster for those cool enough to hip enough to not give a shit about only being seen at the hipster spots. But dont ruin it by telling your hipster friends.
google avatar

Lori S.

Yelp
Made a spontaneous stop to exercise our pup and decided to have lunch here. Looked at other reviews and felt good about our decision. Thankful for patio dining so we could sit with our dog and server immediately brought our water bowl for our pup. The menu looked great and made it hard to choose. We had the nachos, tortilla soup and salad. The soup was some of the best I've had. The beer was great and our server Allison was friendly and efficient and checked in often. Great find. We will be back.

Yelp
A local fav!! The food here is ALWAYS good and the service is consistently great. It has a very casual and old timey vibe.

Yelp
Burgers looked amazing but weren't very tasty. The loaded fries were delicious though.

Yelp
My wife, aunt and I went to Prohibition the other night for a late dinner and we weren't disappointed. The staff were friendly and very helpful with suggestions for our meals. I am a HUGE fan of Reuben sandwiches and so I selected their "Irish" Reuben for my meal. It is a fat stack of thin sliced corned beef (made in-house by their chef. This impressed me, as making corned beef and pastrami is a 7-14 day labor of love while waiting for the meat to cure) with sauerkraut, Swiss cheese and thousand island on toasted marbled rye. DELICIOUS!!! My wife and aunt both selected the French Dip for their meals and said they were impressed by the tenderness of the meat and overall quality of the food. The staff were very attentive and refills came with out asking. I wish that I had taken pics of the food, but it was too good to stop and take photos. Lol I definitely recommend Prohibition for your next meal out; you won't be disappointed.

Yelp
Avocado Enchiladas are AMAZING. Keep in mind: this place has huge portions! Food is great though
