Very impressed with the quality, the portions of the food, and the friendliest of the staff. The smoke ring and bark was amazing as well as their sauce's. One of the best little hidden bbq spots I've eaten at.

Great BBQ. Super clean, fresh and delicious. The ribs were definitely on Point . You could taste the hours they spent in the smoke . The sausage was dreamy and cheeesy and tasted really good . The sides were equally satisfying. Couldn't ask for anything more the service is outstanding. Everyone here was so friendly and nice . I'll definitely be coming back . Hats off to the chef and kitchen for putting out some really delicious food

I ordered an Andrew Jackson plate, choice of 3 meats and 2 sides on their app. I got brisket, pork & ribs with baked beans and cornbread casserole. You don't get any bread with that meal. Plus I ordered potato salad and nanner pudding. I was there when they said the order would be ready but I still had to wait. It is small and it was crowded. The place seemed nice and clean and staff was friendly. When I got my food and got home I found all the meat is wrapped in kind of a butcher paper. Which was messy. There was plenty of food so I took out what I thought I could eat and put it on a plate. The meat looked and smelled good and it was fall apart tender. Having not eaten there before I was not familiar with their BBQ sauce but I told them to give me the sweet one. The sauce was okay but it had a strong chili powder seasoning in it for the smoky flavor that did not appeal to me. But baked beans were kinda of bland so I mix that sauce with the bean it balanced out the flavor and I liked it better. I would swirl my meat in the bean juice for my BBQ flavor for the meat. The meat was DELICIOUS. A little fat but not too much on the pork. The brisket was superb. The rib was good but did not fall off the bone but was easily eaten off and it had good flavor. The potato salad just had a mayonnaise and dill dressing. It's ok but could be made better by adding celery and onions for a lil crunch. Maybe even a squirt of mustard. The Cornbread casserole let me down. It was just soggy cornbread with corn in it. If they were to dress it up with onion and celery maybe with a little ranch base that would be terrific. I highly recommend the nanner pudding. It's scrumptious!

First off I'm a picky BBQ eater. Ive been to almost every BBQ spot between Johnson city tn and Nashville. This is one of my top 3 most definitely. Awesome people and great service. You can tell they care about the food as much as the customer. Brisket was excellent. I will share top 3. #1 jacks BBQ Nashville tn. #2 project BBQ Johnson city tn, and #3 bustin butts BBQ Sevierville tn. I recommend all 3 places

First time trying this place. It was fantastic! One of the best barbecue spots in Johnson City! Smoked mac & cheese was fantastic. Pizza at a barbecue place? Yes, absolutely get one of their pizzas.

Best meal I have had in the area in a while. Would ask for the ribs on a second tray just to separate that awesome flavor from the others. We hit it at rush hour. Would be nice if there were a few smaller tables available.

I really enjoyed everything about this place. You order at the counter and food is brought to you. It was very fast and super delicious. We got the brisket, which was perfect. All our sides were tasty too. I especially loved the smoked Mac n cheese. The sauces they have were also very, very good. I like the TN sweet the most. Good price point too. When you pull in the parking lot you can smell how good it’s going to be, then you see the gigantic smoker and start drooling. Highly recommend.

Update 03/0724: Without a doubt, our favorite BBQ Joint in the area! They have pizza now, too! Really good barbecue place. Food is very good. Enjoyed the Brisket and Burnt Ends Plates. Loved the generous sides of cornbread salad and baked beans. Slaw is a tasty-sweet & vinegary that compliments the fatty meats. Servers are all friendly, sweet, and energetic, and four different gals checked in with us while we were there. Lots of "locals". We has a good time and a good lunch!

This was some of the best bbq I've had! The brisket and burnt ends were amazing. The greens were really good. Corn bread casserole was delicious also. Great service and staff. We got our food Togo.

Excellent! Why am I just stopping in this amazing place? The brisket is very much like I had on a recent trip to Texas. My new local favorite!

I have been trying so called bbq places all over the tri cities and I believe I have found a winner. What a gem. I had the brisket burger with jalapeños and carmelized onions. My side was collard greens. All I can say without extensive elaboration is, flavor overload on both items. My friend had a pulled pork sandwich and smoked Mac and cheese. She proclaimed it to be the second best she has ever had. She's from Texas so that says volumes. We finished off with homemade banana pudding. OMG!!! Stop wasting your time fooling your tastebuds into believing these other bbq places are good. There is a new sheriff in town and it's Project BBQ.

This place is legit! Great menu with all the staples. I had double brisket and pulled pork. Even as take out, both meats were exceptionally moist and succulent! Had the smoked Gouda Mac n Cheese which was fantastic along with the collard greens. Both side were amazing. The place is a smaller boutique that is welcoming and cozy. Everyone who works there is helpful and kind, offering suggestions if you get stuck between items. This is a must try when in the JC area!!!

Holy BBQ Batman. had the ribs and brisket and both were simply amazing. the cornbread casserole was really unique. the Mac and cheese was spot on. the slaw was perfect. Must find you are in Johnson City, TN.

Been wanting to visit since we moved to JC in September this year; fiinally made it last Saturday. I had the Andrew Jackson tray - dbl brisket and pulled pork, large collards and baked beans. Wife had rack o ribs and cornbread casserole and beans with nanner pudding. Top notch everything - I've eaten BBQ all over FL, GA, TN, NC, SC, VA and WVA and this by far is the best tasting I've ever had. Not too much smoke, great smoke ring and pull. This is competition BBQ in JC! Collards - the best I've ever had - bar none. I don't know what magic they do to the collars but I'm buy a QUART my next visit.

Great news they are open on Wednesdays now! I used to live in TX and their brisket is more than decent. Ribs? Awesome. Sausage! Yum. Rotating good beer selection. But my favorite thing about this place is the amazing collard greens. I would wash dishes for free if they would teach me how to make these greens.

They have two locations, we ate at the South Roan location, which is located less than a minute off I26 junction 27. Our first time eating here and we were very impressed! Everything we ordered was first class. The service was very good, actually exceptional considering it was one person undertaking all duties in the dinning area. We ordered the Project Sampler, which was more than my wife and I could eat for lunch. The Project Sampler consisted of :- Ribs (2) - large, meaty and tender Brisket - cooked to perfection Chicken - tender and moist Pulled Pork - tender and delicious Sausage - excellent Sides of cole slaw, BBQ beans and collard greens collards were perfectly cooked and very tasty, BBQ beans had some extra meat in them - very nice! Others had the Project Burgers, which are huge, and reportedly equally as good. The restaurant is clean and tastefully decorated, not "loud" and WITHOUT televisions everywhere - a big plus for us. Prices are reasonable, especially considering quality and portion sizes.

This place is the real deal! Had the brisket and pork belly with mac and cheese and collard greens. Excellent!! Service is great and the smell alone will bring you back.

Located on North Roan street in the old Dixie BBQ building, if you know barbecue you'll find it easily. Otherwise, it's well lit from the street and easy to find. Parking is pretty good for a smallish lot. Make sure you turn in from Roan though. The adjacent side street has no entrance to the parking lot. There are spaces adjacent to the building as well as across a travel lane. There are additional diagonal spaces along the outside of the lot. I believe there was at least one handicapped space near the entrance door. As you reach the entrance, check out the specials board on the sidewalk. I was disappointed they were out of burnt ends, but they apparently sell out quickly. Walking in, there is a bar with seating on the left and dining on the right. Since you order at the bar for take-out it can get crowded at the door. The seating area is a combination of tables and booths. It's not spacious but is well lit and does not look crowded. I was greeted very quickly after I entered and placed my order. I was hesitant to order the Project Burger ($18 with one side), partially because I have an issue paying more than $10 for a burger anywhere, but since the burger includes a brisket patty, sliced brisket, and pork, I gave it a chance. I selected the bbq beans as my side. My order took no more than 10 minutes to arrive. I was asked what sauce I wanted. I can't remember for sure, but think it was a smoky/ spicy version. My concern about the Project burger was dispelled as soon as I opened the foil wrapper. The meat was piled into about a two inch layer on a very nice bun. The meat was tender without being mushy, and the bun held up the entire meal. You could actually eat it like a burger, assuming you could open your mouth wide enough to take a bite. Even though the pork was very good, it was overshadowed by the exceptional brisket. I added the provided sauce but was underwhelmed. The sauce was not spicy to me at all. Luckily, the meat does not need anything added to provide complete enjoyment. The side of bbq beans were quite good. They were a bit thin, but had pieces of meat included. They were a nice accompaniment. Based on the number of people eating there as well as coming in to pick up or place orders, Project BBQ is not an undiscovered treasure, so make sure you join the rest of the bbq lovers and make your way there.

We came into town for a few days and planned to do a little BBQ tour and try a bunch of different places. After we went here? Yea...we just came back here. The food was seriously that good. Brisket 10/10. Good pricing too.

I am from Texas and haven't found very many barbecue places that match Texas barbecue. This place checks all the boxes. Excellent brisket , ribs were amazing, and sides were great as well! Will definitely be back!

Project BBQ is located near the animal shelter and Hyundai dealership! They have limited hours, with only being open on Thursdays for fajitas, and Friday and Saturday for their delicious Texas style BBQ! Instead of ordering at the table, you go up to the bar counter to place your order and pay, then take your number with you and seat yourself. It does get a little busy, but there is a small bar, indoor seating, and outdoor seating available and the staff is pretty quick about getting tables cleaned off for new guests. All of the meats are served by the 1/2 pound, so do keep that in mind when ordering entrées and whatnot. Aside from their bbq and sandwiches, a few unique must try items here are definitely the coleslaw (love that it's vinegar based!), smoked Mac & cheese, and the cornbread casserole (OMG). Like a lot of the other bbq joints here, they have table sauces - a sweet bbq sauce and a sweet vinegar based bbq sauce. I always opt for the vinegar bbq, but theirs was a still too sweet for me. We finished our meal with banana pudding which was a bit too sweet for my taste, but perfect to satisfy any sweet tooth. For drinkers, there is a small selection of beers on tap as well as fountain sodas and water. I definitely recommend including Project BBQ in your weekend plans to come out and support this small business!

When you walk in you are greeted and order at the counter. Make sure to tip them because they do work despite ordering at the counter. They bring the food out and check on you constantly. They want to make sure you are happy. The food was delicious. The brisket was tender and flavorful no sauce needed. The sausage was a jalapeño cheese sausage. It had a kick. The greens were better than average. I think they were flavored with brisket. The cornbread casserole was moist and well done. Not pictured the coleslaw which was not a cream base but more of a vinegar base. It surprisingly worked and was really good, notice it is not pictured. The chicken and pulled pork were just as good as the other. The smoked mac and cheese was different and tasty. The beans had a good flavor. This is casual dining and they do have a drive thru but it is high quality all the way.

Wow, this place is worth the hype! We managed to snag some burnt ends (which run out quickly)! We also got ribs and brisket. Definitely the best barbecue I've had - I normally don't like brisket but this was so melt in your mouth tender. The ribs had a great smoke ring and bark, but was still tender! Burnt ends were crispy and intensely flavored. The TN heat sauce could've used more heat for my liking, but I really liked the vinegar based sauce. Loved the vinegar based coleslaw too - perfect for cutting through the richness of the meat. Banana pudding was also tasty but very low on bananas. You order at the front and then get a number to put on your table.

Best sausage I've had in my life. More tender than the brisket. The waffle fries are surprisingly decent too.

I've heard great things about this place and just not had a chance to try, so when I saw the Veterans Day offer figured that was time to try! One word - Yum! I recommend the 3 meat platter to get a taste of multiple things. Everything was perfectly seasoned and smoked. Ribs gently pulled off the bone with each bite without falling apart. brisket was good portion for the $ and so tender. Smoked sausage had just the right snap to the bite. And then there was the sides - BBQ beans were lip smacking good, had to add a little hot sauce to the collard greens but well cooked. Mac and cheese with pulled pork was a big hit with my dining partners. Definitely will be back

Delicious!! Nice quick service for lunch! Prices up there with other places around town! I needed pickles and bread none!! Yikes this Texas Girl doesn't need the carbs but I still like my bread onions and pickles with my barbecue!! It is still high quality and you're sure to enjoy!! Great bar seating and drive thru!

Some of the best BBQ in the area! Highly highly recommend that everyone give it a try. It is a bit unorthodox for the area the way you order and get your food but it is so worth it.

A great spot for lunch! Neither the pulled pork or brisket needed any sauce as the taste and tenderness were above excellent as they were out of the smoker. With that stated the sweet vinegar sauce added another layer of fusion perfection! The staff behind the counter were overtly polite and helpful. Well done by involved! We dropped a pin on our phones so we know where to stop on future trips through Bristol/Johnson City!

This is a fantastic, simple bbq place with delicious entrees and sides. They're only open a few nights per week and can quickly run out of things due to demand and the amount of time they put into smoking meats. The dining area is simple and after you order at the front, the staff work together to help you with refills, napkins or whatever you need, and bringing your food out. They offer wood fired pizzas and there's a food truck version out front for, I think, lunch options. I've tried neither but have heard good things!

Love the food and the folks who own it and work here. Super friendly and great place to eat. Love the waffle fries and I'm super picky about those.

Amazing, spares no expense. Project burger had no short cuts in the meat, bun, or condiments. I don't see how it could improve. Also has a bar.

This was the BEST bbq i've had in Tennessee since moving here 2.5 years ago. Not only was the brisket melting in my mouth but the pulled pork was to die for and the ribs were PERFECTLY cooked. My boyfriend also had the sausage and said it was incredible. The sweet bbq sauce was perfect with everything, my favorite bite had to be the pulled pork, sweet bbq sauce and mac and cheese all in a bite. Not only was the food fantastic but the owner came out to speak with us and he was awesome! Making sure our food was great, talking with us about where we were from and how he owns the place with his son, even gave us a recommendation closer to home!! We sat outside and it was perfect, we were checked on several times and had everything we needed. Cannot speak highly enough about this place! Although it's an hour and a half from where i live, i will no doubt be back for more!!

This place is the closest to Texas I have ever tasted. The service is great. I was able to sample a couple of items I didn't have on my order. I am even taking brisket back to my "Texas Wife" in Cincinnati.

Great pork barbecue, beans, fries, and slaw. Great friendly service at the S. Roan location. We have eaten there 4 times now with no complaints. No more long lines at Ridgewood now to get great barbecue. Nice facilities, too.

I ate at the south roan restaurant. The wait staff was exceedingly friendly. I ended up choosing the brisket burger, which ended up being the best tasting burger that I have had in recent memory.

This place has VERY limited hours. Check before going. For what the lack in hours, they make up for in great food. We had a little confusion at the door. You order at the counter and then sit. We got lucky and found a couple willing to share their six seat table with us. Which was great of them. I thought we'd ordered brisket, but it was a hamburger. Well, WHAT A GREAT BURGER! It was easily a half pound with cheese, tomato, lettuce and a glorious pepper! I stole my husband's pepper. The burger was perfectly cooked. It was a MEAL all by itself! For sides I had the coleslaw. It was a little different. Not creamy, more of a pickled chow style. Delicious! Husband had the fries. They weren't my favorite, but passable. They have family packs! With the limited seating, I think next time we'll order ahead and carry out. All and all, this place was great. Looking forward to going again.

Great food, great service. A few weeks ago I was leaving a class and called to pre-order some food for pick up. I called twice and was unable to get someone on the line. I was only a few minutes down and we were heading there anyway. I walked into the restaurant and was quickly greeted at their bar near the main entrance. I begin ordering my food when my phone rang with a local number displayed. I cleared it out. They called back again. So I went ahead and answered it and it turns out it was the woman at the window returning my call to get my order. I waved to her, and we all laughed about it for a moment, but I have to say I was impressed by their persistence to ensure my call was not dismissed, even when they are busy and unable to answer when I called. Great customer service goes a long way. I've never eaten inside the facility, I always do takeout, but every time I do, the service is always great, the people are always friendly, and the food is always top-notch.

Brisket was ok for not being in Texas. Mac and cheese was spot on. Worth a try. Very friendly service.

Truly, real TX style BBQ and the best BBQ joint in the tri-cities area! We've tried several BBQ places in the area and they have been ok, some a big disappointment. Project BBQ has us keep coming back for more! The meats have real smoke flavor and smoke ring, really tender and juicy, and simple seasoning - salt and pepper! They have BBQ sauce on the dining table, but we don't use it because it doesn't need it! The beef ribs and brisket is what I always order and it's always good every time. All the sides are really good too, especially the smoke mac n cheese. No complaints with this BBQ joint, the food and service are great!

The food is really good, some unique dishes and recipes. Service is ok, Ambiance is small cafe style.

My husband and I got a BBQ sandwich and a two combo plate of BBQ and brisket. The brisket was hands down the best brisket we've ever had at a restaurant. It was literally melt in your mouth tender and had a good bark and flavor. On the other hand the BBQ was pretty dry and greasy but had a good flavor. I got smoked mac and cheese which was absolutely to die for and my husband said the fries were good but not great. The service was fast, friendly, and on top of it. We'd like to try other menu items as good as the brisket was!

JC is quickly becoming a destination for world class BBQ and nestled unobtrusively off the side of Roan street near the Okalona exit off interstate 26 is Project Barbecue. The smoke depth was perfect as was the texture and marbling. The sauces are excellent and served on the side so you can flavor to taste. The meat is served unadulterated allowing you set your own experience. Well worth the price the portions are generous. Take the time to visit this jewel of the Appalachians and see for your self that JC is on the map for some of the best barbecue anywhere.

This was our first visit. And now we see what all the great reviews are about! We arrived at 5:30 last Thursday and got the last parking place in their lot. The ordering process up front is quick and efficient and the food arrived at our table in 10 Minutes! The brisket is the best we've had since touring through Texas' best bbq restaurants years ago! The new pulled chicken is unique and very good as are their side dishes. Service is upbeat, prompt and very pleasant. This was the best new restaurant experience we've had in Johnson City.

This establishment is what I consider a go to restaurant for quality, service and appreciation of my patronage. There is nothing more satisfying than to go somewhere that has good food, good service and the staff values your business. A regular for me as I really enjoy the quality overall experience.

So much to say about this place! Let's start with the most important thing: Project BBQ serves the best tasting brisket in the entire country. Their customer service is so kind you'll feel like you're amongst family. This is by far one of the friendliest establishments I've ever frequented. In addition to the incredible brisket, I love the burnt ends, ribs, smash burger (probably me second favorite item on the menu) and if you're there on a night Alex makes cheese infused brisket meatballs you're in for a special treat. You really can't go wrong here! When it comes to sides I love the cornbread casserole so much I don't order anything else. You will not regret visiting Project BBQ you're only challenge will be getting there before they sell out of food (and they ALWAYS sell out!)

Stopped in for lunch today and great service and great BBQ! Tried the ribs, brisket and sausage and all were very well cooked and tasty!

Texas style, guess I'm not used to this style of bbq, pulled pork was fine and brisket was good. I like my bbq doused with nice tangy sauce and cole slaw so it's whatever floats your boat i guess

Project BBQ has a new location on S. Roan! If you haven't eaten there before, you are in for a treat! I had their pulled pork sandwich and it was seriously amazing. It had a nice soft buttery roll piled high with succulent pulled pork with lots of pork bark! They have three great sauces to choose from, and all their sides are delicious. My friend and I decided to do a little tasting and got small portions of the barbecue beans, smoked mac & cheese, cornbread casserole, and coleslaw to try and they were all so yummy! We also split a banana pudding dessert but we are both too full from dinner so more to come on their nana pud! Lol :) Definitely worth the calories! We ordered take out but the location is warm and cozy and the staff is super nice and friendly!

Great place for local food with a Texas twist! Great people & service, Alex was great in checking on everyone to make sure they were happy. BTW, the bbq is awesome with very generous portions, ribs & cornbread casserole are must haves.

Best BBQ joint I've been to in a while. (My visit was actually a couple weeks ago in early October). Excellent menu selection and great food. I ordered smoked brisket and smoked turkey. Both meats were succulent and delicious. The sides were great too.

Great people- Amazing flavor! We got the brisket burger and tots. While the burger is not big on size- it's huge on flavor! We got the smoked onions and jalapeños and were in heaven. The tots were perfectly cooked and I mean perfect! Looking forward to trying other items!
