The Best Bakeries in Phoenix, Arizona | Eater Phoenix

"A longtime staple at farmers markets around town, Proof has morphed into a bread powerhouse with three storefronts across the metro area. The bakery is owned and operated by Jon Przybyl and Amanda Abou-Eid, a husband-and-wife team who were prior customers of the original Proof Bread Bakery. They purchased it when the owner, Jared Allen, left Arizona, but they continue to use Allen’s natural levain starter, named Harriet (really). The couple’s wide array of breads, croissants, and seasonal treats use locally sourced ingredients; regulars tend to go early, before their favorite pastries sell out." - McConnell Quinn

The staff was very friendly. I recommend asking for the Barista special of the day. Its their own creation amd it makes the coffee testing very unique. We had the sourdough croissant and the cinnamon roll. Both were very good. Thr place has a small searing area inside and its moderately quiet.

The bread and pastries are delicious, and the staff are super friendly. The heated ham & cheese croissant is the best I’ve ever had—it’s a bit pricey but definitely worth trying. The iced latte and mocha are also great. I rarely ate sourdough before, but now I find myself visiting this place twice a month!

Nothing says “celebrating my diet progress” quite like… undoing it entirely at Proof Bread Co’s new downtown spot. I told myself I was just swinging by for one loaf of bread. You know, casual, responsible, just a little treat. Cut to: me walking out with three loaves, four chocolate chip cookies, and a pepperoni pizza. Honestly? Zero regrets. The place itself is adorable and super convenient like the kind of spot that makes you want to “accidentally” forget your lunch just so you have an excuse to stop in. The smells hit you like a carb-loaded hug the second you walk in, and the girl at the counter was so nice she could’ve sold me a sourdough starter and told me to name it. 10/10 would sacrifice abs for bread again.

So I didn’t go to the location, Proof was on site at the farmers market, but my goodness gracious they are wonderful. The employees were super nice and great energy and then of course, the most important part, the bread, was amazing. I got a rosemary twist that had some of the best flavor and texture I have ever had and an incredibly hearty and delicious sourdough that I would sincerely recommend.

Google
Excellent quality sourdough breads, we've tried several options available. Hands down one of the best bread you can find in Phoenix area. Haven't tried the pastries, they look tempting though.

Proof's spot on Roosevelt is utterly fabulous. Stop in for one of their fresh pastries, get a tasty coffee to go with it, and grab a delicious loaf of bread for dinner that night. There is cute indoor seating space and a wide open walk-up window with patio. Plus the people there are always so friendly and willing to answer questions about their bread or just help start your day on a lighter note. They're an amazing addition to this part of Roosevelt and I highly recommend a stop.

Google
the best bread i’ve had in phoenix!!! the sourdough is actually sour and moist, and the pastries were perfection. tried the country loaf and the chocolate croissant. coffee is also delicious!

Google
Of course, the food is delicious. I go every single Sunday with my dog to get Sunday pastries and bread for the week. I've never had a bad order. But it's more than the food that keeps me coming back. The people who work here are so profoundly NICE. In our chats, I always learn something new about their process - today, it was about making pretzels using lye vs. boiling water. As a (very) amateur baker, I appreciate that they don't talk down to me or gatekeep all their secrets when I ask questions. They're passionate about what they do, and it shows. This is the kind of place that makes Downtown feel like a real neighborhood, and I'm so glad it's a part of ours.

Yelp
I normally go to the Shea location, which is about a mile from my house, but two days before Christmas the baguette supply rain dry so I pre-ordered to the Roosevelt location, which is near my job. I was concerned about the parking, and my inability to parallel park. I parked down the street in a spot that didn't require skill. I didn't realize they have a quick pick-up window for pre-orders, so I probably could have just stopped in the loading zone and had them toss it to me! It was a fast and friendly transaction! I'm sure Shea will still be my primary spot, but it's great knowing that there's a convenient alternative!

Yelp
I first discovered Proof's Sourdough bread at the Farmers Market and absolutely loved it. So, when I noticed they had opened a location downtown along my commute, I knew I had to stop in. I picked up a variety of items to try: the classic sourdough loaf, olive loaf, lemon curd Danish, rosemary twist, and a 4-pack of English muffins. The place it small but plenty of seating inside and out, very cute. The classic sourdough was just what you'd expect, solid and reliable. The olive loaf was especially delicious when paired with my favorite homemade olive oil dip. The rosemary twist had good flavor and was enjoyable overall. The lemon curd danish was a bit too intense for me. I usually love tart and sour flavors, but this one was overpowering. The pastry itself was great, but I wish the lemon curd had been more evenly distributed rather than just a mound in the center. A touch more sweetness would have balanced it out better. If you love very tart lemon, this might be perfect for you, but it was a bit much for my taste. The standout item for me was definitely the english muffins. They were light, fluffy, and made the best breakfast sandwiches. I ended up eating one every morning, they're hands down the best English muffins I've ever had.

Yelp
BEST CHOCOLATE CROSSIANT EVER! I'm lactose intolerant and there's a lot of stuff i stay away from, especially bread because it has dairy, so there's very few pastries i can enjoy without feeling sick. I've always stuck to sourdough since it has very low levels of lactose and good bacteria for the gut since it's fermented. I had went to Margret T Hance park with my lunch on a beautiful day, i searched around for any bakeries or coffee shops i could read my Manga book in. I found Proof! right down the street it's such an easy 5 min walk. I was greeted by a Lovely lady, and she was so sweet. I have a small sweet tooth but Chocolate croissants are a favorite of mine and i was SO PLEASED, there was BEAUTIFUL outdoor seating and even a bar area with air conditioning, in case it's a little humid, it felt so good. I sat there for a while and read, enjoying my sweet pasty. i loved every part of it! 100/10 :) WILL BE RETURNING AS A REGULAR :p

Yelp
OMG after watching many! many!! many!!!seasons of Baking shows on TV I have found a Authentic Bakery where all those hard working bakers work. I had a SALTED ROSEMARY TWIST that was bursting with real rosemary and buttery goodness. The staff is beyond friendly and the coffee is amazingly good and reasonably priced. They brew Press Coffee(a local bean roaster). I travel as airline crew and I really appreciate bakeries that put in the work.

Yelp
They specialize in sourdough bread and have many kinds - sliced, whole, thin and thick crust, with olives and other varieties. They also have pizza and pastries that are ok. The prices are on the high end, but the staff is uber friendly and the place gives off a great vibe. They have a turntable and a small collection of vinyl records that you can spin - a self service that is a big draw for me . Indoor and outdoor seating on a nice street overlooking the corner of 3rd Street and Roosevelt.

Yelp
We stopped in here for some coffee before a concert close to closing. Sadly, they were out of coffee beans. However, we were able to grab some drinks from the cooler and the barista was kind enough to hook me up with some almond milk for my canned iced coffee. We also went home with some treats and some absolutely beautiful loaves of olive bread. Our initial disappointment of not being able to have a fresh brewed coffee was quelled by the barista's kindness. As I'm not a local to this area, I can't say for sure, but this seems like a very popular spot you want to get there early for!

Yelp
Service was great, with a nice clean bakery vibe. The selections of breads, pastry was pretty excellent! I rated them a 5 for service, quality, and location. They advertise their speciality as sourdough & they accomplish this. Prices were fair, maybe slightly better than their competitors. They are very helpful in providing ingredients, which are French style using butter, and in some cases, cold pressed canola. There was a buy 6 get 6 dollars off. Great! I spent 30 fr 6. Morning bun, which was like a cross between a cinnamon roll & croissant. Great cinnamon taste, and flaky. Their is an overwhelming sourdough taste, which I did not care for in a sweet pastry. I won't fault them, since this is clearly their angle. Sourdough. Lemon pastry. Loved it. The lemon was super tangy with the sourdough taste working like magic. This was my favorite. Reminiscent of the flavors in a lemon cheesecake. Almond croissant... not a fan. For me the almond was too subtle. Just a preference thing. Not feeling the sourdough tang in a croissant. Plain croissant...again, not wanting sourdough in this style of pastry. Pain chocolate. Loved it! The dark chocolate was delightful. Rosemary twist. Savory & slightly sweet. We had this with some salami (at home) It was really good! They had some interesting thicker pizza bread that looked very interesting, and I would like to try their loafs of bread. Many to choose from.

Yelp
I've loved Proof Bread for years and was so excited that they've opened a location at Roosevelt Row. Great location in the new Eco apartments. Fast casual service where you order at the counter and they call out when your food/drink is ready. A couple of places to sit inside and a decent sized patio outside that will be great in cooler weather. Their pastries are great as always. Such a good addition to the neighborhood.

Yelp
Quiche was delicious. Flaky and buttery crust with a center of eggs and meats. Learned about their flour mill which was cool to learn. Great old Phoenix neighborhood across from a small park. Lots of locals and people walking about. Great social vibe in a peaceful park setting. Despite being opening day and having crazy lines, our food came out hot in a couple of minutes. Coffee came a minute after. A great addition to the neighborhood!

Friendly Neighborhood Fan ..

Yelp
The perfect little bakery!! They serve delicious coffee and the BEST pastries! We have bought several sourdough loafs from them and each one was fantastic. You can't go wrong with anything here. The staff is always super friendly as well! They have seating on the inside and it's placed inside a nice little row of brick buildings off of Roosevelt. I highly recommend this place :) We need more places like these in Phoenix!

Yelp
Mmmm brand new proof bread in such a convenient location! I went to their grand opening and got their sourdough croissant and chocolate chip cookie, both were delish. Will be back!

Yelp
I Love Proof Bread! I've only been to the Litchfield Park location but I'm sure the others are just as good. They have the tastiest treats and pizza. I personally really enjoy the chocolate croissant, morning bun, and pesto pizza. Also the staff is super friendly and you can even order online for a quick pickup if time is tight. I just hope to see some pop ups out here in the west valley soon, maybe at a farmers market or other events. Thanks Proof for being so awesome!

Yelp
If you are a sourdough lover, get your bread from Proof! Amazing quality bread without the useless ingredients you'd get from a grocery store loaf. The pastry's are also soooo good! They also have coffee! The staff was super friendly and enlightened me with the background of the business and bread! You're not only getting high quality bread, but you're also supporting a small business! I will definitely be back to get my weekly sourdough loafs!

Michelle L.

Yelp
We've been buying Proof bread at the farmers market for awhile so I visited their bakery. GREAT patio on a quiet street (at least that morning it was). I think their pastries are the best because they're made with sourdough. By far the best bread in the city.

Diana Z.

Yelp
Delicious pastries & bread in the downtown area. We bought a couple of croissants, an iced mocha and loaf of olive bread. The croissants are so flaky and fresh! There are just a few tables inside & more seating outdoors. Parking is a bit hard to find but we will definitely be back!

Catrina H.

Yelp
We had the chocolate croissant and the boston creme pie crossaint. Both were fantastic. The staff were very kind, too.
