7 Best Coffee Shops in Dublin | Condé Nast Traveler

"Thanks to the coffee-making gizmos, gadgets, and tools displayed on the counter, this slim joint in artsy Smithfield has the vibe of a science lab. Little distracts from owner—and champion barista—Niall Wynn's simple menu, which consists of espresso drinks made from specially sourced beans and seasonal flavored lattes, which are a deviation from syrupy, artificially flavored drinks. Instead, the versions here are made with infusions of fresh ingredients, including real roasted pumpkin and autumnal spices." - Melissa Kravitz Hoeffner

Google
The place is absolutely pristine and so aesthetic — I loved the design, the color palette, and the overall vibe. They serve seriously delicious coffee, and their pastries are just as good (yes, I tried both, no regrets). Now, here’s the thing: we were helped by three different girls at different times, and… let’s just say the energy was giving tired. A smile or a little warmth wouldn’t hurt, especially when you’re serving people who, like you, work with people all day too. A great place deserves great service to match the vibe, ya know?

Google
I was really looking forward to visiting Proper Order while in Dublin. Before trips I try and do a lot of research to find cafes that fit what I’m looking for since I work in specialty coffee also. It was pretty close to closing time but I wished there had been a few more pastry options, which is not their fault. I got a drink on the Summer Menu called the Big Apple Spro Tonic. It was actually really great and I enjoyed it! I also wanted a milk based drink for take away. I got an iced latte to go (with sweetener) and it was awesome at first. The longer I drank it l, there was an off taste that I couldn’t place. Overall, good coffee, good service and a great space. Thankful to go on a weekday because I can imagine it’s very busy on the weekend.

Google
I was going to give a 4 because I came in with expectations (probably not the right approach 😂) to have a nice selection on some pastries, buns and croissants and found only a few cardamom rolls. However, the coffee was incredible. I am not a coffee drinker, my jam is tea or instant coffee, but I tried a bit from my partner and it was the best coffee Ive ever had. Space is awesome , clean and comfortable and soundtrack is good. Highly recommend

Google
I went there twice while staying nearby. The staff wasn't very friendly, but the coffee and bread were both delicious.

Google
First time in the new venue on Smithfield square, and proper order coffee have really upped their game! Big, bright new premises and lots of standing tables - I didn’t realise I needed standing tables! Great food and service, will be back

Google
This is a special coffee shop. It’s the sort of place you would come to Dublin just to visit here. They are serving some of those most incredible coffees out there, and have a talented team to present those coffees excellently. Whether you really know specialty coffee or not, you won’t be disappointed! There is ample seating, they have delicious pastries, and I’ll reiterate the Coffee is incredible!

Google
Walked over to this amazing takeout-only coffee & pasties place for breakfast this morning. I ordered a latte and the gentleman behind the counter recommended this double chocolate cruffin thing when I asked for a pasty suggestion and said I usually get a chocolate croissant. I was very happy with my choice. The coffee was good and the pastry was excellent. Flaky and not too sweet with a couple of bits of chocolate in it. As other reviewers mentioned, there is no seating available here. This place is takeout only and they do NOT accept cash. I was remiss and did not take a photograph of either the current menu or the front door. I shall have to remedy this when I return to Dublin later in the week. I highly recommending finding Proper Order Coffee Co if you are ever in the area!

Yelp
1) the service location on apple and google maps is wrong, and they need to update that. They have a flyer on their door, but it is NOT helpful for the space. It's one of the reasons I'm dinging them a star. 2) The coffee was soooo good. Absolutely grab one of the espressos and sit for a while. We did to-go (the lids suck - be warned), and I am bummed that I couldn't enjoy it in the shop!

Yelp
Great local coffee joint with excellent and friendly customer service! Proper Order Coffee is located about a block away from the Smithfield Market. The drinks are made with much care with unique foam art as shown in the pics of my flat whites. You can taste the high quality beans in each up! Be sure to pick up a cool Proper Order Coffee sticker while you're there!

Yelp
quick service, but they're not very friendly. they only take card, no cash/coins. the latte tasted pretty weak, not sure if it was two full shots. prices were fair. about five different types of coffee which was nice. pastries were delicious.

Yelp
Seriously good coffee just off the square in Smithfield. This area seems to become the new coffee lover's paradise with small coffee shops popping up everywhere! Proper order is one of the good ones for sure: super-friendly service, very good coffee and a great selection of sweet treats that don't break the bank; that's clearly a winner for me. An americano and pistachio and sunflower cake thingy for 4.50Euro? You don't get that in D2.

Yelp
Great atmosphere, my new usual spot! Lovely latte art, and great espresso. Love the decor, too.

Yelp
Located near what looks like an industrial estate not too far from the Four Courts, making Proper Order pretty easy to get to. The cafe is on the the smaller side but has a cool simplistic look, and they have a bench outside to sit outdoors in addition to a few but limited indoor tables. The decor is quite trendy too and it's nice and bright. The coffee here is on the stronger and shorter side and although it wasn't really to my taste personally in terms of intensity, objectively I could say that the quality was good with a strong aroma and rich flavour. It was around 4:30pm when I had went so there was no customers at that time as it was closer to closing, but with the location I would say it could be quite busy in the mornings or afternoons. They don't have much in the way of savoury food/ lunch, but the coffee is very decently priced and the staff were all very nice. Definitely worth a visit for any coffee lover in search for something stronger. Overall: A cool little coffee shop by the Liffey Coffee: 4/5 Service: 4/5 Seating: 3/5 Atmosphere: 5/5 Price: Similar to most independent coffee shops. Variety: 3/5

Yelp
The lads here sure do have a handle on what they're doing. I mean, we've a Barista Champion and a Latte Art Champion on our hands, should I even be surprised? I came here on their soft opening day and was immediately greeted with friendly smiles. Aside from the typical Espresso/Americano schpiel, they've also got silly things on the menu such as their "Slap & Tickle," which is their tasting set--an espresso and milky drink of your choice. I came while they were using Square Mile Roaster's Red Brick beans and I ordered the Special Latte (€4.50) upon recommendation of the friendly barista behind the counter. The special that day was a Latte with Tahitian Vanilla, sweetened with homemade Syrup; it was delectable, and definitely the highlight of my day. Not sure if that says more about the coffee, or my day, but I'd give Proper Order a try. They've also got an assortment of delicious baked goods on the counter, ranging from €2.50-€3, if your coffee needs a buddy. An absolute gem of an addition to Smithfield Square, if I do say so myself.

Yelp
This is a small friendly place on Haymarket at Smithfield square. The cost of coffee is not cheap (3 euros for a 6 ounce cup) but is quite good. They have a daily latte specialty that I did't try but heard they were really good. They have tasty pastries to tempt you and a fun menu with creative names. The barista is friendly and helpful. They have limited hours-not open on Sunday, 7am-4pm weekdays and 10-5 on Saturday.

Yelp
I never really know what to write in reviews like this. Proper Order is a lovely little place that makes excellent coffee. While I was there recently, I watched two of the staff engage in (likely mortal) combat with a wasp that was loitering in the shop. From the moment it entered the shop, it was clear that the wasp had no intention of buying anything, but it was taking up a seat that another customer could have taken, and so the two attempted to usher it out politely before the wasp grew irritable and they were forced to take more dramatic action. They handled the situation well and did not pose for photographs with the beast after it had been dispatched, but returned to their work without fanfare. I feel I should reiterate that the coffee was fantastic.

Yelp
The coffee here is delicious. I know they use small cups because they use great coffee but it can be hard to get used to paying around €3 for a 6oz cup. Other than that small gripe they also do a latte special and the day we were there it was a Turkish delight latte at €4.50- worth every penny it was a complete taste sensation! Quite a few coffee shops have opened around Smithfield recently and Proper Order is up there with the best.

Yelp
Great coffee, one of the best in Smithfield if not the best! Has a small seating area though. Lovely staff. Would recommend.

Yelp
If you're looking for a great place with excellent coffee, warm hearted people, and sweet treats look no further. Great place, great coffee.

Fiachra M.

Yelp
A great addition to Smithfield. They're a multi-roaster café, which means that they source beans from different suppliers around the world. They lose one star because their house-roast is from the UK and not Ireland! The sweet treats are tasty and inexpensive. The slap and tickle (an espresso served with a flavoured tonic) is always interesting. It's something that I first experienced in Stockholm and nobody else (as far as I'm aware) is doing anything like this in Dublin. However, I've found the special lattés taste like the syrupy concoctions that you'd come across in the likes of Starbucks. I salute their efforts to experiment with flavour combinations, though! Proper Order is a must visit for anybody in the area.

Yelp
Best coffee in town, the cakes aren't bad either (chocolate Guinness cake). Great spot with friendly staff.

Yelp
One of the coolest independent especially coffee shop in dublin. Excellent coffee, something you wont have in bigger chains. If you really appreciate coffee then you should go there and maybe try cascara soda which you may not find elsewhere in dublin. I was really impressed when I saw that on their menu ( if you dont know whats cascara soda, its made of coffee cherries or berries).

Yelp
Good coffee, nice place, however, closed on a Sunday. The surrounding area is mostly residential and there's nowhere else for good coffee in Smithfield on a Sunday. There's Insomnia in Fresh, but I'd rather have tea. Take advantage, a bit disappointing that they were closed.

Yelp
Great place. Really stands out to me in the way that it is so clean and organised and in "order" ! Coffee was just beautiful, staff lovely and I loved the interiors. Very green and fresh!

Matt M.

Yelp
Amazing coffee, staff with a sense of humour, great vibes all around. I will be coming here every time I'm on Dublin. You can tell it's quality as almost every person who came in the door knew the baristas and was greeted as if they were their best friend! Can't recommend highly enough.

Laura N.

Yelp
The best damn fine cup of coffee in Dublin. Honestly. It's a really strong cup of coffee it tastes so creamy. €2.50 for a super quality Americano - you can't go wrong. They also sell bags of Square Mile coffee (as far as I know, it's the only place that you can get this in Ireland) so you save on trips to London!
google avatar

Ilo T.

Yelp
A little pricey, but the best coffee I've had in Dublin.

Wasp K.

Yelp
5 star coffee and cakes, but not mad about the service or atmosphere here. Theres not much seating, the sears are small and not comfy, and I feel seriously judged by some of the staff if i order to sit in. However if your getting coffee and cake to takeaway its grand.

Catriona B.

Yelp
Great coffee, friendly staff and a relaxed atmosphere, what more could you want.
