Our first time here, well, thought was take the pies back to Florida…. wrong! I sat down to see my chicken mushroom and leek pie, and after one delicious bite, it was gone. Never missed a savory bite, the incredible flaky buttery crust, stuffed with white meat chicken, huge mushroom pieces, followed with oooh goofy leeks. The pie is a masterpiece. And for dessert… strawberry rhubarb, fruit and currant pie, the list goes on. I just couldn’t stop! The staff are just as warm and friendly as their pies. Thank you for starting something I won’t be able to stop at just one. Until, we come back to visit again, thank you!

Google
These pies are incredible. We tried both savory and sweet and had no complaints. The line is long but goes fast. Take your pies around the corner to Libby Park for a view while you eat. We tried the Lamb & Vegetable pie, Pork/Apple/Cheddar pie, and the Banoffee sweet pie. Will definitely be here again soon!

Google
It was great! I've been here twice, and both times were amazing. There's no indoor seating or bathroom available, but there are two tables outside. The process is simple and efficient: just order, pay, and get your pie. The steak and cheese pie is absolutely delicious, you can really taste the chunks of beef, and the savory sauce ties it all together perfectly. We tried the steak and cheese, the sausage roll, and the butter chicken pie. The sausage roll has a solid filling; it was a little dry, but still tasty. The butter chicken pie had great flavor as well, but the steak and cheese is still my favorite. We haven't made it to the sweet pies yet, but one day, we definitely will!

Google
Personal savory pies and sweet pie slices. We loved both! We got there when they opened at 12 and there was a little line but it cleared out fast. You order at a window and they immediately hand you a bagged fresh pie. Definitely would go there again.

Google
Interesting concept Order online Pork rojo is good Key lime pie was good The butternut squash one could have been better Pick up from the window all day at any point based on your order Items sell out Pork rojo againnis the way to go Wish there was a sitting area, there is a bench not too far away however

Google
We got the key lime pie, banoffee pie and coconut cream pie. The key lime and banoffee were good but the coconut cream pie lacked sweetness. They use whipped cream instead of meringue which I was not a fan of. Other than that, it was delicious and the pie size was large!

Google
Fantastic pie shop! I love that they have hand pies and single serve slices of sweet pie. It is a great option if you are eating alone. It's really only walk up, order and go. However the service is fantastic and I have never been disappointed by any of the many options I've tried on both menus! A Richmond favorite for sure!

Google
Delicious flakey pies! I ordered mine online for pickup. I ordered two savory pies and two dessert pies. The chicken mushroom leek pie is delicious and comforting, it tastes like chicken pot pie! I also ordered the spinach artichoke pie which was great as well! For the desert pies I tried the vegan banana creme pie and the coconut mango. I’d say the banana creme pie it was actually good for it being vegan but still prefer a non vegan one 😁 The coconut mango was delicious!

Lasya G.

Yelp
I was wary of ordering the palak tofu pie as it was the only vegetarian thing on the menu and I don't like spinach, but it was delicious and exceeded my expectations. Warm and flaky with a savory spinach spiced filling, and tender bits of tofu. The Spinach, feta, and chickpea roll was everything you'd expect from a roll. The sweet pies were also exceedingly good. Try the sour cream and blueberry, my new favorite. The pies were ready in less than a minute. I'd highly recommend this little place.

Yelp
The service was very quick and staff were nice. the food is SOO good, I really recommend the butter chicken pie!!!

Yelp
Proper Pie is an absolute gem, and as a pie lover, I can confidently say this place was hitting. I'll definitely be coming back and bringing friends and family along with me. The staff here were really upbeat, and welcoming , just a burst of energy off the rip. Seating is very limited (just a couple of tables with chairs out front), this is more of a grab-and-go spot honestly. The selection is fantastic, and everything I tried was top-notch. Think their menu rotates but I got the lamb & vegetable pie as well as the steak & cheese pot pie, and both were so good, probably the best pot pie I've ever had. To finish it off, I went for dessert with their blueberry and apple pie, and it was hotting just as hard.. absolutely worth it. If you're into pies (savory or sweet), Proper Pie is a must visit. I can't wait to go back and try more of their menu!

Yelp
Food was so good! Service was lightning fast, even with a line at the ordering window. Unfortunately, no inside seating, and only 2 tables outside for people to sit at. We got our pies and went to the nearby park to enjoy them. The curried lamb pie 5/5 was absolutely divine. The spices and gamey-ness of the lamb went really well together. Mince and cheese 3.5/5 was good too but heavy on the gravy, difficult to eat Thai chicken curry 4/5 a solid choice for non-red meat eaters! Well balanced. The pork BBQ and peach 4.5/5 was spectacular but just barely beat out by the lamb pie

Yelp
Finally got to try Proper Pie out after hearing about it for so long! It is a small storefront that slings out only pies, both sweet & savory! I did not try any of the sweet pies on this visit but the three savory pies I did try were flaky and flavorful. I ended up getting the Peach & Pork BBQ, Butter Chicken and Salmon, Leek & Potato pies. The Peach & Pork BBQ was my favorite it had an amazing amount of filling and a good portion of meat. The Butter Chicken left more to be desired as it was mainly filled with the mild tomato based sauce and only a few chunks of chicken which did not compliment the crust as well as it could. The pies were much bigger than I thought they would be and found myself getting full after one, luckily they refrigerated and reheated very well! An employee also shared that you can freeze them for later eating, as well. They only offer take-out here and have two small tables in the front but do not have a public restroom or indoor seating. The staff was extremely friendly and quite efficient. The line for this place was quite long but I only waited about 10 minutes in line (which was about 4 groups ahead of me) and my pies were handed to me warm as soon as I placed the order. Overall, I see why this is an RVA favorite and definitely recommend giving it a shot.

Yelp
A great place to stop by to pick up some pie from their convenient takeout window. We enjoyed our Peach + Sesame Crumble pie slice at the Libby Hill Park, which I highly recommend! Crust was great. Peach was perfect level of sweetness/tartness. Would definitely come back again. We went an hour before closing, and they had already run out of most things for the day. Try to go earlier if you can. Otherwise, I'm sure all of their menu items are solid.

Yelp
Adding to my previous review - 10/10 great place to order from on the day of your engagement. This place will forever have a space in our hearts and our story.

Yelp
one of my favorite stops during my richmond trip! this quaint little pie shop is tucked away. it has a few seats outside, but the locals seem to take it to the park nearby. they have a lot of both sweet and savory options. i tried the chicken, leak and mushroom pie and it was amazing! all the flavors were well put together and i regretted not getting more than one! for the sweet pie i tried the strawberry rhubarb which tasted so good. it was sweet with a slight tart flavor. the crust itself seemed a little underbaked but that didn't stop me from eating all of the filling.

Yelp
Stopped here while driving through Richmond and I am so glad we did! They have a variety of savory and sweet pies and they change out some of their pies weekly which is very fun. It is just a little window you walk up to. It is a cute little neighborhood. Was able to get parking just outside to get some pies. There is no where to eat them which is a little sad. Lots of unique pies. I ordered the thai savory and the turtle sweet pie. I loved them both. They were so filling and definitely worth the price! I even went back for a second one but they were out of the turtle. Workers were so nice and offered their recommendations! Would definitely come back! Yum!

Yelp
Good savory pies that are individually wrapped. There's two tables but the restaurant is an order and pickup window. It's super fast, basically ordered paid and handed pies. I'd imagine the wait would be longer for the sweet pies. Tried the steak & cheese, sausage roll and chicken. Definitely liked the sausage roll and steak & cheese the most. No restrooms or indoor seating.

Yelp
Easy to order at the window. Actually too easy - every time I see there's no line when I drive by now I'll be tempted to pull over! The person who took my order offered to give me a rundown of the menu - sweet and savory. I went with some of their faves - the mince, butter chicken, and blueberry/peach cobbler. The mince was probably my fav individual pie - so savory and exactly what you think a meat pie should be like. Perfect! Amazing crust. The butter chicken was also good - I'd def get this one again especially in lieu of an expensive Indian takeout. The cobbler was just ok - I'm going to go for a different sweet option next time. Everything sounds great and I can't wait to be back soon!

Yelp
Proper pie will go toe to toe any day of the week with your mom's pie! Are you looking for a savory pie? Come here! What about a sweeter pie? Also available here!! Order ahead, you still gotta stand in line, but at least you'll be able to pick it up (guaranteed set aside for you). Pull up to the window at 12, and you'll be in for such a treat, the atmosphere can be very electric. Looking at the menu with all the other patrons, and just being blown away by all the options (new and old!) Not only is it beautifully made, and handheld, the portions are perfect, filling enough where you feel like you could split a dessert pie with your partner. Just perfect!

Yelp
The Meyer lemon ginger and blackberry slice was delicious!! My first bite was a little confusing because I've never had ginger in a pie before and you can definitely taste it. BUT it complemented the tartness of the lemon and blackberry well. There's no indoor seating. You place an order at the window and pick up there once it's ready.

Yelp
Proper Pie was one of the most highly recommended RVA must-eats I read about online, so I had to try it. It's a tiny shop that only takes walk-up orders. They have two small tables outside and there is also a park conveniently located not even a block away. They have an assortment of savory and sweet New Zealand style personal and whole pies. Based on the three pies I tried, I'm sure everything is terrific. I went for the steak and cheese, their most popular savory pie, which is filled with diced steak in an onion gravy mixed with American cheese. Buttery, flaky crust with a warm, hearty, savory gravy. Now that is heaven on earth. To satisfy my sweet tooth, I got the banoffee and mock turtle (vegan) pies. The banoffee is their bestseller sweet pie and I now know why and am so on board. It's got beautiful and thick layers of English soft toffee, bananas, whipped cream, topped off with cocoa powder, all sitting on top of an Anzac biscuit crust. I was iffy about how tasty a vegan pie would be, but the person who took my order convinced me that the mock turtle was worth trying. It's got an Oreo crust, almond butter mousse filling, topped with Rice Krispies cereal, chocolate ganache, and crushed almonds. Very delicious in its own right. Proper Pie is a special spot to return to over and over again if you are ever in RVA. They know what they're doing, that's for sure.

Yelp
This is a Richmond must try - and we legit recommend this to everyone when they ask for RVA food recs! We have been here countless times and have enjoyed every single thing we have ever tried! Post-covid it's just a window service so I recommend picking it up and walking across the street to the park to eat. Also, do not leave without getting both a savory and sweet pie!

Yelp
I was craving some savory pies and I decided to stop at my favorite pie place, Proper Pie. I asked what were the most popular savory pies, and the staff recommended the chicken chipotle and the steak and cheese. The chicken chipotle was really tasty, though I was hoping for a bit more of a kick. Sadly, the steak and cheese didn't do it for me. I wasn't into the gravy-like flavor, the gravy was too thick, and to be honest I couldn't even taste the cheese. I didn't get a sweet pie this time around. However, if you're wondering what to order please, please, please go for the Banoffee pie--it's amazing! Overall, I always have a good time here. I like to try different pies to see what I like. It's quick to order and the staff is super friendly.
google avatar

Michele F.

Yelp
I'm so happy to finally try this place. The staff was super friendly and took the time to explain that the savory pies are eaten like sandwiches and the sweet pies are sold by the slice or as a whole pie. Based on their recommendation, I got the steak and cheese pie for lunch and a slice of apple pie for later. The only drawback is that this is take out only, so on a cold day, I had to eat in my car, which made for a bit of a mess due to the flaky pie crust. The pie was delicious, served hot, and really hit the spot. I can't wait to get home and try the apple pie. If you are in Church Hill, you must stop by and try their pies.
google avatar

Khiem H.

Yelp
I came here with a few friends because they said it was great. I probably hit a dud on this pie, the ginger was a bit overwhelming compared to the keylime and black berry. I tried my other friend lemon meringue pie, it was also average. Not quite sure if we were just unlucky. The service was great though, the friend was very friendly. You order at the window there's no inside seating. I'd try again when I'm Richmond hopefully it won't be a letdown again.
google avatar

Erra G.

Yelp
Delicious sweet pie. To go slice! Roasted apples in a pate brisee topped with a cinnamon and brown sugar streusel. Sooo good, especially warmed up with a side vanilla ice cream if taking home. Proper pie also has great service!
google avatar

Ella K.

Yelp
Not only are these the best sweet AND savory pies in have ever had, the customer service was amazing. We literally could barely make it to the car before digging in!! The pumpkin caramel was soooo good, the raspberry buttermilk is a classic but the truest stars were the pork rojo and thai chicken curry savory pies. The pie crust is something I am dreaming of. I cannot sing their praises enough. I will be going back sooner rather than later!!
google avatar

Nicole B.

Yelp
The restaurant is in the middle of a historic location so waiting in line in a beautiful talking to others was a vibe. Amazing selection of sweet and savory pies to try. I tried the sausage and wish I had got a sweet one as well, I'll be back.

W S.

Yelp
If I could give them 10,000 stars I would. This place is FANTASTIC!!!! Staff is incredibly sweet and helpful, the pies are insanely delicious. I always buy 2 or 3 because I can never decide, they never disappoint. 10,000 stars
google avatar

Yelp
Forgot to take a cross section picture while eating it because it was so good my friends and I absolutely loved these savory pies! We got a mushroom burger and picture is the pork pie. We placed an order in the morning and pickup was quick and east at their counter. The pies were so warm and the crust is perfectly flakey. Seasoned amazingly and the meat is so tender! Highly recommend checking this place out! Since they don't have an indoor space for customers, they have limited outdoor seating available (:
google avatar

Jackie B.

Yelp
The best pie place I have ever tried! My family and I tried a variety of both savory and sweet pies, and loved every one of them. For the savory pies, we tried the steak and cheese, chili bean and cheese, and spinach, feta, and chickpea. They were all amazing and the crust was delicious. It's hard to say which one was my favorite as they were all very good. For the sweet pies, we tried the chocolate chess, coconut cream, pear and cranberry streusel, and the strawberry rhubarb. Again, amazing crust and amazing filling for each of the pies. My favorite was probably the pear and cranberry streusel. The pies reheat well and still tasted delicious. Price point is a tad higher than other pie places I've gone to, but it's probably due to the quality of ingredients they use. Hope to visit this place again next time we're in Richmond!
google avatar

Jessica G.

Yelp
Great handpies and large alike. The online ordering system is very easy to use. Super unique pies (worth the high price). Be sure to grab a hand pie as a snack if you go. I was very impressed by the vegan and vegetarian options.
google avatar

Anissa P.

Yelp
Absolutely divine. Hands down best pie crust out there. First the filling has to be made absolutely incredible and they put it in pie crusts that literally beg for prayer. So so good! I'm full off one pie and would binge just to have more!!!

Yelp
Proper Pie Co Proper Pie Co has been on my list for a while now due to their unique offering. This is the only place that I know of that specializes in sweet and savory pies. I expected more of a bakery vibe. A place where i could browse the days pies and sit down and eat. Unfortunately, when i got there, everything was premade with a limited outdoor seating area. The ordering experience was more like getting tickets from a movie theater with cool vintage microphones to communicate through windows. This wasn't nessicarly a bad thing because the savory steak and cheese was nice and hot with the best, buttery, soft pie crust i had ever tasted. The inside tasted like a brunswick stew with cheese. I expected more of a philly cheesteak, but i wasn't upset because I personally enjoy brunswick stew. The sour cream and wildberry pie was a great combination of flavors, but it didn't reach its potential because it seemed a bit on the older side. The bottom crust was difficult to crack with a fork, and the texture wasn't as silky as i have seen in other pictures. Overall, I would try Proper Pie Co again. I would love to try a different flavor of the handheld pot pies. There is potential for a great meal here, but I think my expectations did not match what this restaurant was. Overall: 7/10 Location: Hard to find parking 6/10 Prices: Savory pie was priced well. Sweet slice was pricey 7/10 Customer service: Great 9/10 Food: Good 7/10

Yelp
I finally tried this place, and I was not disappointed. I had to stand in line for a little bit, but the line went fast as soon as you ordered your pie was ready to go. I suggest getting there early when they open maybe around lunchtime you can also get as many pies as you wish and you can freeze them. My favorite pie was the lamb Pie and the chicken leek and mushroom pie. I definitely want to go back and try the other savory and sweet pastry items on their menu a Richmond Staple in Churchill.
google avatar

Christopher H.

Yelp
Chileeeee! When I say these pie's are in fact Proper!!! I mean it! I've had about 70 percent of their menu and I haven't found a miss yet. Based on the GOD LEVEL PASTRY everything is made out of you literally can't lose here. I just need to express how next level good the pastry is. The golden brown firmness that is their pastry is the only love I ever want to envelope my mouth over and over again! 10,000 out of 10

Yelp
After living in Richmond several years I FINALLY made it to proper pie for food and dessert. It was so good, it's a walk up cafe style order, and then you can sit outside. It was a lovely day out so we grabbed food and dessert. Everything was sooo delicious and I loved all the vegetarian / vegan options. My spinach roll had feta and chickpeas in it. And the pie slices were delicious. It's not super pricy for two people to get a savory and sweet pie, it was like $30-40 with tip. Definitely recommend!!
google avatar

Andrew W.

Yelp
I absolutely love Proper Pie. It's one of my favorite places in the Church Hill neighborhood. It's a walk-up counter at the door, so there's no seating inside or out, but it's great to carry home or to take to the Patrick Henry park across the street for a picnic. Parking is on-street only. I've had Proper Pie many times, and it's always phenomenal, but I tried their vegan options recently as I was on a weird diet for a short while. Their vegan options are also great, and it was nice to have that option when I needed it. The staff is always great and when I pick up my pies with dog in tow, they are always quick with a treat for him. Absolutely recommend you try Proper Pie if you haven't been, and if you have, you already know how great they are.
google avatar

Connie T.

Yelp
The place to go if you're ever craving pie, whether sweet or savory. I used to gravitate towards only the sweet pies but after the Church Hill Irish Festival, I can't stop thinking about the savory. Pies are made fresh daily. I really like that they have online ordering and the stock is accurate so once you pay, you have claimed that item. You can order at the window as well. There's no wait for your order. They used to have indoor seating but only operate out of the window now.
google avatar

Nicole R.

Yelp
Amazing restaurant with delicious pies! Sweet and savory! What a treat and so authentic! The owners are incredible too!!
google avatar

Rachel M.

Yelp
Incredible choices of amazing savory pies and sweet pies. I will never be totally happy until they are serving flat whites again, though.
google avatar

Patty Y.

Yelp
Love pies and love Proper Pie! You can buy by the slice or whole. The available pies vary so it's always a nice surprise. With the online ordering on their website you are not paying fees to any platform (pickup only). The pick up is fast and the savory pies are hot off the oven. I have to admit it's very difficult to wait until getting home because the smell is so good. Luckily Patrick Henry Park is just across the street and plenty of benches to sit and indulge some pie . Highly recommended!
google avatar

Amanda E.

Yelp
Omg you have to try the Mississippi Mud slice while they have it!! It might my my favorite slice I've ever gotten from here. Second favorite is probably Banoffee and third is sour cream and wild blueberry streusel. But honestly when it comes to the sweet pies, you can't go wrong. Everything is so amazing.
google avatar

Lena M.

Yelp
Proper Pie knows how to do their crust. I'm not afraid to admit I'm the type of person who could eat pie crust by itself. They cook their crusts to perfection. It's buttery and flaky like the best kind of pies. However, that's where it stops for me, I want to love Proper Pie as much as everyone else, but I think I'm missing the hype. For their savory pies, I've had the lamb & vegetable pie and the chicken, mushroom & leek pie. The chicken one was a bit too frozen chicken pot pie-y for my liking. Although I liked the lamb, it was a bit plain for me and upset my partner's tummy. I've had friends who have tried the bean savory pies and loved it. A while back, I tried their chocolate turtle pie and remember liking how thick the filling was. My friend found that one too nutty for their liking though. I think Proper Pie fills a special niche for Richmond. We don't have a lot of places specializing in pies, so it's cool that we have a shop dedicated to it! There are lines and although I do think every local should try this place at least once, it's not necessarily something I'd go out of my way to return to. There tends to be lines, so know that people really like it. It's a takeout place, so there is no seating unless you want to eat on a park bench nearby. I must note that the staff here is incredibly kind and patient. I had someone kindly recommend things to me and help me split a bill before. The service and crust are the best things.

Allie Y.

Yelp
Excellent. Loved my pie so much. We ordered ahead online and picked up. The pies were the perfect temperature and were so delicious. I would eat one everyday if I could!

Brenda K.

Yelp
Best Pie's in Richmond! I have to limit myself though, because I could very easily eat every meal here. Their Savory pies are my absolute favorite. I've tried so many of them and each one is wonderful!

Rachel R.

Yelp
This is the cutest little bakery. We had the chicken/spinach/artichoke pie and the pork/apple/cheddar. We also had a slice of the sour cream/blueberry pie. Verdict: Delicious - We found it easiest to use the crust as a "pocket" and eat the filling with a fork and then eat the crust. Yom! Yom! Nom! Nom! - This is not a supremely filling meal, so you may even want to buy two pies. - They did not have unsweet iced tea on the menu, so we brought our own seltzers from home. Good to Know: - You can order online to ensure your pies are ready when you arrive. But you don't have to -- they have ones ready for walk-up customers. - Their menu rotates. - The adorable order window is in a sheltered nook. But it is teeny, so if it's raining, you will likely be standing out in the rain to get your food. - There is no indoor seating, but they do have two four-top tables outside (in good weather). You can also walk across the street and sit at one of the benches in the park. - Parking is plentiful along the perimeter of historic St. John's Church and it's free (on Sundays). What I wish they had? Photos of the pies on their website. It's like trying to book a hotel room with no room photos -- I just won't. So thankfully, there's Yelp and I found pie photos here.

Yelp
Proper pie is still absolutely delicious. I always get pork Chile (verde or rojo). Today I got steak and cheese and it's now on my list. Though not what i was expecting (thought it be more cheesesteak) it was so flavorful.
google avatar

Emma W.

Yelp
Got a vegan butter chicken savory hand pie as well as a single slice of mango coconut cream pie-- both were delicious and creative!!! They were served hot and cold respectively and tasted fresh even though I ordered an hour before closing. The service was fast and polite. My only complaint is that there is currently no indoor seating and the shop is window service only. There are a couple of tables outside. There is also not a large drink menu.
google avatar

Cassie M.

Yelp
I've been wanting to try Proper Pie for years, and I finally got around to it; maybe I had too high of expectations, but they weren't met. I tried the sweet potato pecan which was a fun combo I love a sweet, smooth + crunchy combo! My dad got the pumpkin Carmel one which just tasted like typical pumpkin with a slab of Carmel on top. It's definitely a bummer that they have no seating in or out. Just a simple cup of water would be great to quench your thirst after indulging in pie. Despite not having seating and just handing you a slice of pie in a plastic container, they still ask for tip on their iPad but it's very awkward because you can't just click no you'd have to actually tell them to click no tip as they have a big glass window separating you from them, & the iPad is on their side. It's a good idea for them though how to get extra tips. The container is just big enough for a slice so it makes it really difficult to eat it out of, in fact when I was trying to cut a piece, it tragically slid right out of the container onto the ground.

Yelp
The coconut cream pie is just DELICIOUS!!!! It never disappoints. Always good and flavorful. Even the toasted coconut was toasted to perfection. Best coconut cream pie in Richmond!!! Excellent service with great suggestions. The young lady at the window was excellent.

Yelp
As Americans, we are not appreciative enough of savory pies. This is a mistake, because they are, perhaps, the ultimate food. Proper Pie Co. makes me mad because I don't live in Richmond and can't eat there every day. Now that I've tasted it, I'm going to crave it for the rest of my life. Service is quick and the pies are delectable. The sweet pie we tried (s'mores flavored) was good, but the real attraction was the savory stuff, and the mince pie I had was so good it almost made me weep tears of joy.

Yelp
Super cute place with good pies! I ordered a steak and cheese pie and the "Campire" sweet pie. Both were tasty, service was fast, and the staff members were super sweet. Will try again!

Yelp
Great pies! And the lil savory dishes excellent as well. You won't regret giving a try. Great to kill that sweet tooth!

Yelp
I don't like crust. Except for the crust here. It's flaky and delicious and filled with the most balanced filling I've had in ages. My sour cream and blueberry with streusel was perfectly sweet and creamy and I wish I had gotten more than just a slice! Trust me, get an extra slice, or maybe a savory pie for the road! The line outside this little shop looks too long, but it flies- less than a minute per customer, without it ever feeling like they're rushing you. The crew inside is quick and much friendlier than you'd think possible in such a busy place. Even on a Saturday afternoon that saw everyone in the world seemingly wanting pie, we were through the line in minutes. Because everything move quickly, there are always parking spots opening.
