"Straightforwardly true to its name, Proper Tacos is a little Mexican concession inside Holloway’s Nag’s Head Market and it’s worth making a pit stop for. The blue corn tortillas are handmade, the beef suadero drips lurid orange, and the crunchy salsa macha is spooned generously on every taco. You can get three tacos and a drink for £15 and while the pulled chicken encacahuatado can be a little dry, the duo of juicy pork chicharron and dripping beef suadero more than makes up for it. Burritos and quesadillas are on the menu as well, and there are a couple of stools on which to perch for a super quick lunch or dinner. photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch" - Jake Missing

Google
The best places are where you walk in with no idea & the chef will just ask you what you don't like then make you one of the best tacos you've ever eaten. The standards on the menu come from good chefs playing around. This was a fun chef making something fun. Loved it.

Google
Amazing tacos. Fun gift selection. While Proper Taco wouldn't seem out of place in a larger city, the place is a bit "edgy" for Midland (in a good way) and adds some much needed spice and diversity to Midland's comfort food oriented restaurant scene. If you don't know what you want, just ask and they'll put together the best combinations for you.

If you haven’t eaten at Proper Taco, I envy you. It means that you get to experience this place for the first time. Before you go, make sure you have your yearly planner with you. If you don’t have one, buy one. Buy a nice pen to write in it, because you’re going to want to mark down the date of the first time you ate at Proper Taco (it certainly won’t be your last visit). Those meals where every bite tastes just as good as the first? That’s here. Will you be overwhelmed as a newbie with the hilarious chaos that is the menu? Yup. Will you feel strange ordering a Becky and a Sophia? Possibly. Will you scoff at the cost? Likely. But you shouldn’t- these tacos are culinary works of perfection. If you get completely overwhelmed, just order the Merv nachos and thank me later. Now, are the (new?) square plates less-than -ideal? Absolutely. So if you get a taco, use the second shell as a “catcher” for the drippings and, voila, now you have a second taco. The plants, the funny magnets/tchotchkes for sale, the matte black toilet… it’s a vibe and it’s delicious.

I did truly enjoy this restaurant and will go back. However some things to note; when they say spicy they mean it! If you love the heat they know how to bring it! The food is flavorful and well presented. But the few things I have to say that may be negative are the seats are a touch small for bigger folks( yes, they do have a bench side to set on) and the da core seemed a touch thrown together.

Google
The best!! Always great food, and the service is amazing. Not your average taco place. Fun tasty combinations. The menu just changed slightly, but for the better and I didn't think that could happen. Now dips, soups and the best tacos around.

Google
Creative tacos, not your normal taqueria. Cute little place. The menu is a bit overwhelming, thankfully the guy gave us a menu tour which did help but it was still overwhelming. I’m glad I looked online first because I kind of knew what I wanted to get. You walk up to a counter to order. The menu is on the wall. Tbh this makes it very overwhelming with a menu that has so many options and variations it would be better done as an in hand menu. After ordering I heard the workers talking in the back about how they can’t understand how someone, even after the menu has been explained to them that they can’t figure out what to order. I can tell you right now that it is the way that the menu is presented. It’s the names and the way the ingredients are listed. Having the spicy items listed in red helped my guy order because he knew which items he wanted immediately. I on the other hand needed to read the overwhelming list of ingredients. The smell when I walked in was a bit sour and there were a few flies around the kitchen and counter area which was off putting. The flies and overwhelming menu almost made me want to leave. I ended up getting an Odin and a Becky- both were super wet with the water from the bin the chicken was pulled from. They definitely need a spoodle. Because they are not draining their scoops. My tacos were so soggy and wet that it was a mess to eat. My first bite of the Odin got all over me and the table. While the flavor and presentation were good the actuality of the taco was a disaster. The last plate photo in my post shows the liquid that came out of both my tacos. My guys tacos were different meats than mine so he didn’t have my issue. He had the moe and the Amanda. He said the moe was interesting and the Amanda was best. We had the Nathan to share which was really good. The worker never checked up on us or pre-bussed our table but did it for a family that sat next to us. This was upsetting. I was gonna talk to them about my experience but figured after hearing them talk about the customers before hand and the fact that they didn’t check up on us that they probably didn’t care. Good not great. I’d go again.

Google
My friend and I visiting midland stopped in on Sunday for lunch, we wanted something different and unusual and boy did we find it. And let me tell you, my mouth is watering and I’m craving the tacos so bad I’m about to drive the 50 miles for them. The flavor was out of this world. I had the spicy angie taco and it tore me up on the way out and I loved every minute of it. We both moaned very loud with our food. The service was awesome. We had a great time with the lady that served us. The catering list had me laughing so hard. Cannot wait to have more.

Google
Super fun energy here! Their menu hosts a diverse mix of taco combos, all with unique names. Also, they have a vegan section! The blend of flavors was nice, the only downside was that the tortilla ripped easily

Yelp
We ate here on a Saturday afternoon after touring Northwood campus. The location is great, and there is plenty of parking behind the restaurant or on the street. While we had a great time, the food was just okay. The people were awesome and we had a great time. They have put a ton of time and effort into the atmosphere, decorations and the naming of their dishes. It's a super fun place to walk around and chill. The nachos were amazing, but our tacos weren't really all that great. I like the soft shell corn varieties, but the pork tacos were not good at all. The chicken varieties were decent, but the chicken meat was dry. Overall, it was a good experience but the food was not as good as we were expecting. We will try it again next time.

Yelp
I ordered take out and wasn't impressed. I had the Polly (spicy chicken) & carnitas taco and the queso dip. The queso dip I would rate a 1/5 - extremely rubbery and thick. & extremely lacking in flavor. The chips were good. Both tacos were mediocre for me as far as tacos go. The corn tortillas were good and the tacos were well stuffed, but the flavor just wasn't there for me as far as street tacos go. The salsas and seasonings were bland. If you're a fan of chipotle flavor you may like the Polly taco.

Sapha H.

Yelp
The restaurant is clean and the staff are very friendly. We ordered vegetarian items and were very impressed by the number of vegetarian and protein options on the menu. Would love to see some seafood options in the future, but perhaps those are seasonal. The nachos were our favorite. The spicy guac is actually spicy and the queso is really good. Probably the best place in town for solid nachos. Unfortunately we weren't impressed by the tacos. We felt like they were overstuffed and bland. We tried several vegetarian and vegan tacos but weren't huge fans. Maybe the meat tacos are better? We asked for a straw and the gentleman said they charge for straws so that was interesting. We would definitely come again for the nachos though!

Yelp
I'm up here with my coworker for a conference and I hadn't eaten anything all day. We were given a one hour lunch break and since it was within walking distance of the hotel, we came here to eat. Walking in, the place is a decent size, but very limited seating. The menu's electronic and it was hard to read and understand. It was also super fuzzy and tiny font. I docked a star for this because half of us were standing there squinting. I will say the food here is fabulous. I ordered two Oxacada tacos and there were so spicy I couldn't finish. My coworker got a salad and she really enjoyed her meal. Drinks here are from the cooler and no fountain drinks. Boo hiss, I like fountain pop! (refills as I am heavy on the liquids. I really enjoyed the food here a lot, and even though it's nothing super fancy, definitely worth eating here. Prices are decent but worth it's weight in gold. eat here if you can!

Ashlee S.

Yelp
Too spicy, and I love/do well with spice. Lacks flavor because of the spice. Extremely inedible. Service was lacking as well. Looked vomit-y. Awful experience.

Yelp
These are not traditional tacos, but if you looked at the menu you already know that: ambience is decidedly on the funky side. Meatless and vegan options are clearly labeled (I was a bit confused by a dip with bacon being listed as "Vegan" but the fairly wordy menu text stated that without bacon was an option). The more red text there is for an option, the hotter it is. The restaurant is on the corner literally next to a public lot in downtown Midland. Inside, at least in the wintertime, the lighting was a bit dim but the food was fine. My companion had chicken tacos; we shared an order of sexed-up bean dip (no bacon). No drinks, though water and plastic cups are available if you look. The bean dip had a kick to it; basically the bean dips are toppings on top of a basic bean dip; knowing that now, I'd give it a good stir before tackling it. The seasoned chips were dusted with salt and some sort of chili; I prefer 'em plain. For me, the medium level of spice is about perfect; the "Xander" was a bit weird (sweet?) but I liked the taco with adobo chickpeas and a little red text. The chicken tacos were also apparently good. If you like your tacos funky and like lots of vegetarian / vegan options, stop by.

Yelp
We were so excited to try these tacos after hearing the majority of the menu is gluten free. We called in advance to discuss the menu and Ashley was very helpful. We drove from over an hour away. When we arrived we were vastly disappointed. Flavors were either extremely spicy or bland. Tacos were good portions but soggy and poorly presented. The queso tasted bland and was unappealing. Moreover, the ambiance at the restaurant was bizarre. The toilet was not working without a sign on the bathroom that it was out of order even though staff were aware. Instead of fixing the toilet they sent us to a bar down the road to use their bathrooms. The food and experience both were overall such a huge disappointment and a waste of $33. We couldn't be more disappointed in our experience.

Faith R.

Yelp
Not traditional street tacos, but SO GOOD! Great service, great food, great merch. We liked all 8 tacos we tried. Messy, don't come on first date ;)

Backwoods H.

Yelp
I haven't eaten here, and I will not. Looks like a place with good food and a nice restaurant. I will not support businesses that host drag shows.

Jennifer L.

Yelp
AMAZING!!! I had the Spike Nachos with chorizo. I love spicy and they definitely hit the spot! They also looked picture perfect. The service was great and super fast! HIGHLY recommend!!

Anthony S.

Yelp
Food 7/10 Tacos 6/10 Nachos 8/10 Service 7/10 Ambiance 6/10 except for the bathroom with celebrity mug pics.

Ken S.

Yelp
Not a family atmosphere. Some things around the place have "language". Lunch for myself was $24 for a couple tacos, chips, salsa, and a coconut water. Place feels like it is having an identity crisis. Salsa was top notch. Best for take out.

Chad T.

Yelp
I liked what I had food wise but their menu is overwhelming with options and names. I would rate it a five for the taste and service but just reading the menu gives me anxiety. I've been to very similar restaurants in other areas and I've had awesome experiences but, having so many options on the menu and adding having an odd naming convention is to much for me. In a rambling way I'm just saying 5 stars for the food and 3 stars for the menu which averages to the 4 stars I'm rating them overall.

Denice D.

Yelp
PROS I received a big protein portion, and the taco tasted great. Staff was friendly. They seemed to like their job and the owner. CONS Menu was hard to decipher The $5 taco came with one corn tortilla

Kevin D.

Yelp
I adore this place. The food is delicious, the stickers and cards hilarious, the merch delightful. It's so nice having decent vegetarian options. I finally broke down and bought a "NACHOS" sweater. I will wear it with pride.

Kristin E.

Yelp
Awesome menu with tons of options for carnivores and herbivores alike! Nachos were layers of deep flavor and a touch heat. Tacos perfectly cooked and toppings plentiful! Proper Taco is a must!

Claudia Z.

Yelp
Amazing tacos! Very hot options! Be careful, when they describe Britany as hot, it's referring to the taco for sure!! Now capers on a chicken taco from Juarez? Genius! Florida man certainly captures the tropical citrus flavor. These place knows tacos! They make their own corn tortillas (no flour tortillas from the store). Delivery was super fast, and ordering was a breeze through their website. So glad Proper Taco is close to where I work!

Emily W.

Yelp
Amazing food and spectacular custom service! The pork carnitas were super tasty and the perfect amount of spice. The quaint atmosphere was the perfect spot for celebrating my daughter's engagement. Best of all, the owner Ashley went above and beyond. We called earlier in the day to see if they could accommodate a party of 10 to surprise my daughter. Not only did she provide a table, but gave the newly engaged couple flowers, a card, and a little surprise for the celebration. We will definitely be back. It was well worth the 90-minute drive it took us.

Livia O.

Yelp
I highly recommend the Oden with braised pork. I mean, where else can you get Taziki on a taco?! VERY messy, but delicious!

Michelle L.

Yelp
This place is amazing I had Remington taco, Brittnay and Pollo. Could only eat two they were so full and flavorful. Husband had the Beetlejuice from the Halloween menu and loved it especially the pickled beets. Salsa and chips were phenomenal they chips were seasoned with a taco seasoning. We got the hot salsa. We will be back for sure. I want to try all the tacos.

James S.

Yelp
This is the best place on earth! 10/10 service great food, good conversation! Here's a poem for how great proper taco is! Proper Taco rules Other tacos drool! Best service around Greatest nachos in town!

J J.

Yelp
They have the standard tacos, but the neat thing is the wide variety of creative variations of tacos. I ordered two tasty vegetarian versions and my wife two meat. Hers came with a mild mango habanero that she especially enjoyed. Four tacos plus tip came to $25.

Rachel G.

Yelp
This hidden gem!!! Seriously YOU MUST go there ... best tacos I've ever had. Service was good, little mom and pop kind of atmosphere.... These tacos are so unique so well made the flavors are outstanding. This is a bucket list stop !! check out the menu I posted

Lillian M.

Yelp
I'd live in proper taco if I could. I love the tacos and other food. The employees are always very nice to me and I like looking at the funny gifts.

ALEXANDRA L.

Yelp
Tacos are huge! I may have picked poorly, but one was too spicy for me. People were nice and quick.

Brandy D.

Yelp
Taco filling was tasty, hated the rubbery cold corn tortilla. Would have preferred a flour tortilla. Wasn't given my coin change, just a bill back. (Not sure why!?) Get a new bottle opener rather than being condescending about a crap piece of equipment that no one can use without your explanation. Also, sorry the ex-husband left you a shitty opener and find it ridiculous you are waiting for a customer to buy you a new one. Seriously....wtf? Also, the unnecessarily confrontational attitude of the staff was off-putting. Will not be back.

Steve J.

Yelp
Tacos are excellent great service will be back again nice cozy, diner, in looks like they have seating outside for nicer weather

Dylan J.

Yelp
Great environment, down to earth staff. I mean, really great people. The interior was very up to date. I've noticed not everyone is a fan of this style of Mexican. I on the other hand thought it was rather nice to have a change of pace instead of the same exact Mexican dish like 90% of the others. The street taco take really grabbed my attention.

Sarah E.

Yelp
Delicious food, awesome vibe, fantastic staff. Stop and eat here, you will not be sorry. Best tacos I have eaten in the area.

Cathi M.

Yelp
Great local spot. The food is unique & delicious and the staff is super friendly. Nice for a quick casual dinner.

Ryan B.

Yelp
Eat here!!! Best tacos in Michigan. When I arrived, I presented myself as a Proper Taco virgin and was guided to the best, most tastiest, flavorful tacos I've ever had.

Maha J.

Yelp
Found this on a whim online when we were hiking in the area. Nice, big menu with lots of options for meatless and vegan. The guy taking our order was helpful and gave his recommendations. Food came out fast, service was friendly, and most importantly the food was good! Tbh, didn't have the highest expectations but the reviews do it justice. I got the Mo taco and Dylan taco, and the Mo was amazing (and actually spicy!) The Keith nachos were also yummy, highly recommend this place.

A G.

Yelp
Beef cheek, pork, and chicken taco. Easily the closest thing you'll get to an authentic Mexican street taco. For Midland I'd give it a 4/5 star. All the meat was tender, juicy, and flavorful. Would of been better with a double corn tortilla on the outside. Still great overall.

Nancy N.

Yelp
Excellent menu with a wide variety of choices for both meat, eaters and vegetarian's. The staff is super friendly and accommodating. Excellent experience all around.

Kait M.

Yelp
Fantastic food, fantastic staff and amazing vibes. First time here was impeccable. JUICIEST meat ever, not greasy just JUICY. I'm obsessed. Great prices too! You cannot go wrong with this place

Robert V.

Yelp
Food is good...but $5 for one "street taco"? They also don't double up the tortillas like you're supposed to. $9 for cheese dip? I guess if Dow is paying...

Kevin K.

Yelp
Hands down the best tacos I have had in the GLBR. Everything I have tried is excellent. They are rediculously short staffed, so make sure to call or text them before you go in.

Kelly H.

Yelp
Ohmygosh! I'm in love with Angie! (The tacos all have names here.) This is an amazing taco place. Fresh ingredients on corn shells. The spice was just right for me. The menu is easy to read after a short explanation from the friendly and fast staff. The taco was absolutely perfect - rivaling fine Mexican restaurants and I will definitely be back. The beans were also delicious. The restaurant was a bit cold.

Amber J.

Yelp
Proper taco should be called wet taco. What's proper about this taco? Idk ? The taco was decent. They were generous with the meat which was a plus. I had the Angie and Jessica which were spicy chicken tacos. My daughter had the pollo tacos and she said add more seasoning and salt .. just saying ...

Nancy H.

Yelp
I found this place totally by accident. It's nothing fancy, but super friendly and efficient service and a darn good taco for a very reasonable price. I had the Marco taco..very generous portion of meat and filling and a very nice mix of flavors. The chicken was a bit spicier than I would like..but the flavor was outstanding . I will definitely back to try some of the other options or variations!

Tammy M.

Yelp
Stopped in after a coffee at Espresso Milano next door. It was 12:15 on Thursday with only one person ahead of me at the register. There is seating for approximately 20 people. Would be nice if they could share outdoor tables with their neighbor. Had to wait around minutes for my one carne taco. Person taking my order was friendly. I don't like the bottled soda, prefer fountain drinks and the taco was pretty small for $4. The taco was too spicy for my tastes, the meat seemed dry and really no taste other than spicy. I'm not a big taco eater but it was convenient. Won't be stopping again, overall too spicy and price for the size isn't for me.

Scott M.

Yelp
Super friendly staff. Huge menu. Very affordable, place is small but that's ok. Only have corn tortillas. Overall I thought the food was very good. My only complaint was the shells were cold, like they just came out of the fridge. Didn't make sense to then put hot food on them. I'd definitely have them warmed up next time

Irene L.

Yelp
Fantastic in every way.I would recommend it to all your friends. The tacos, the nachos everything!

Twila B.

Yelp
Get the ancho chili chicken tacos or the roasted. Tortillas were homemade and awesome, as were the chips. Mild salsa could use more kick so get spicy if you like the heat!

Jamie R.

Yelp
If you made it this far in the reviews you found your answer. Yes the descriptions on the menu are silly but it is not just a gimmick, everything we had was excellent. Between the 4 of us we tried a little of everything. We were just passing by Midland and needed dinner. Glad we made the decision to drive into town instead of the fast food junk off the highway.

Becky W.

Yelp
Took a stab at a random Mexican restaurant when driving through town. We ordered tacos, nachos & Elvis dip w/chips. All yummy. Will stop here again.

Megan B.

Yelp
We stopped en route from The D to TC hoping to find something decent to eat. Wow! We will be back. Tacos were great. The service was friendly and quick. The restaurant itself is quirky and fun. Don't hesitate to try a Proper Taco!

Louis V.

Yelp
The best tacos in Michigan!! The excellent staff are amazing! Pork, chicken, or asada you just cannot miss!

Holly K.

Yelp
Fun, funky place to enjoy tacos. My only complaint is that the menu provides too many options. ( if that can be counted as a complaint).
