Tips and Gear for a Perfect Car-Free Picnic | Eater

"A large urban park commonly used for picnics; visitors describe using a granny cart to carry blankets, a small cooler for ice, bottles of pre-batched cocktails, bar kits, and glassware to make transporting and setting up an outdoor spread much easier." - Jaya Saxena

A wonderful place to get away from the noise of the city for a few. There's a cute pathway through one of the lakes that take you through tall cattails and leads to even more serenity and a nice sitting area towards the back of the park ^ ^ And it all loops around if you follow along the trails, so you can't get too lost. I adore it here

Google
the older playground is cute, but 3 stars due to parts being fenced off and needing repairs. otherwise, it’s a lovely green space next to some water. covered picnic area and great access to the bike trail. saw a whole family of geese walk by as we were playing. great times!

Google
Beautiful park with running and biking path right next to lakes and rivers ,playground and basketball courts. Alot of fishing and bird watching. Picnic area, rest rooms, water fountain, dog park . Cornhole boards by the Ramada area, baseball field, soccer field. Multiple parks along the path and parking for cars

If you're ever in the Wheat Ridge area and you want to play some pickleball, or walk the dog, go for a bike ride, let the kids get out some extra energy, have a picnic, or just relax and watch the wildlife and water flow by... This is a place to do it... Prospect Park in Wheat Ridge in my opinion is a park I wish I had when I was a child growing up... Sure we had natural wildlife and we had water and forest and swamps and everything like that but it was all private property You couldn't go and enjoy it and walk through it like you can at Prospect Park... Prospect Park has wildlife, ducks, geese, squirrels, birds, raccoons, I've been seen some horses... It's got multiple place areas for kids, it's got water, the trail goes on forever, the people are polite, it's always clean, besides that it's my local park And I've even slept there... ( Not supposed to do that, but I had a human pillow... Lol ) If you're a female, single, between 25 and 50 And you can see your toes I would like a local guide... Look me up I'm not hard to find I'll even show you the rest of my tattoos!!! So don't stay at home, get out into some sunlight and visit your local parks so make sure you visit Prospect Park and Wheat Ridge!!!

This park is worth a walk down a trail! I like BOTH play structures, but the tower one really got me. I like the merry-go round, the lake is breathtaking, and the pavilions are super nice. There are areas to play games, (Beanbag toss, and ring/horseshoe toss) and is an enjoyable place to go!

I play pickleball here regularly when I’m the Denver area. Six courts in good shape, with nice fencing and real pickleball nets. Drop-in play is usually from about 8 am to noon, with weekend crowds hovering around 50-60 folks of varying levels. Weekday usually 30-40 players, again varying levels. Folks here are great people! Little to no drama, they abide by the paddle stacking rules and willing to play with most everyone. Come and meet some great folks and pickle away!

Nice, newly renovated neighborhood park! Beautiful landscaping around the lake and nearby open grassy space. Great spot to walk a dog. Only negative is the dreaded Canada goose has moved in (I've seen as many as 30 or so at once) and there are areas during parts of the year that are so covered in their droppings they're just gross and unusable.

Yelp
Ball fields, a trail, lakes for fishing? What a gem right near Denver! I can only give four stars since honestly I was only here at night for half hour to watch the comet. It provided a great western view, probably great for sunset! Lots of parking both for the playing fields and trails. Connects to Clear Creek too!

Yelp
Beautiful park! Love the bike trails and park for kiddos. They could use a mini park for the 1 year olds... hopefully an update soon in the future. Otherwise great place for picnics and outdoor fun!

Yelp
What a fun and expansive place to hang out! Came here with my partner and his extended family. Lots of playground and nature for the kids to explore. We found a group of benches that was perfect for the giant group. Didn't get to walk around the entire park, but I loved the creek and trails. Plenty of parking in the lot. Apparently this place used to be super sketchy!

Yelp
Nice clean place with open air, picnic pavilion, playground, stream & lake. Our family has had several Birthday gatherings there.

Yelp
This is a park that I frequent for my training runs. Aside from establishing a healthy lifestyle or utilizing the great trails it is also a nice place to come and stroll with the family and soak in the Colorado scenery. There's a bit of wildlife everything from snakes too dear. When the creek is high or low it is always worth just listening to the gentle flow of water over the rocks. This park is connected to the larger cycling trail. My wife and I not only run but we cycle many times from Prospect Park to Golden Colorado and back. It's a relatively flat ride and in my opinion that's the best kind of ride you can have. There's baseball diamonds and football field and great fishing apparently. You can also have playgrounds and plenty of room to run around. I would highly recommend putting this park on your list of places to unwind.

Yelp
We visit during daylight hours, it is a beautiful Park, without having to reach the mountains you have a nice Creekside Trail covered with tall trees that provides you shade. A unique asset when it's too hot and you need some shade to keep going.

Yelp
This place must have gotten significantly less creepy since Gitana G. wrote her review back in 2008. I lived super close to Prospect Park from 2010 to early 2013 and walked here on almost daily basis, and always felt very safe. I do, for the record, always have two big dogs with me- one a pit bull- so someone would have to be out of their mind to fuck with me. Highlights: five beautiful lakes and Clear Creek to walk around (and for your doggies to swim in), two or three playgrounds for the kiddos, excellent bird watching (keep an eye out for the famous Mandarin duck in Prospect Lake!), miles and miles of beautiful off-road walking/biking trails, and some of the most scenic mountain views in the Denver metro area. The best thing about this park is that you can walk for miles and only see one or two people- it is very quiet and peaceful. Perfect for people like me who need to be alone in nature to maintain mental sanity, but don't want to drive all the way out to the mountains. The best part? The Clear Creek Greenway (one of Denver's awesome urban trails) runs through the park. Hop on it and head west, and it will take you all the way to Golden. Head east and you'll go to Commerce City, where you can connect with the South Platte Greenway, which goes downtown. So essentially you can get to downtown Denver from this park completely on off-road trails. Pretty damn nifty! In sum, this park is just AWESOME. Go check it out!!

Yelp
many homeless people with tilted rv's,cause they have no air in the tires. When I paid my rent and I read the meter it read appx 11 dollars. When they read the meter it read appx 35 dollars. I was helping to payn the homeless people who lived there I guess.Pizza hut driver was scared todeath to deliver there he tells me.NOT a rv park, just nothing but trouble and depression all over the place

Yelp
I am a photographer and love shooting at this park. But 2 weeks ago, I was photographing a family here and we all got poison ivy/oak/sumac. Please be aware of what these plants look like and keep away! All of our rashes are extremely painful and itchy, and it spreads quick!

Yelp
This is a wonderful, safe and beautiful place to get yer walk in for the day....I have been here many many times, with my parents who are bird watchers and I also go there to get my walk in for the day....Not sure what the other person was talkin about not being a safe place because of all the men trolling.....completely far from the truth...Alot of men and wemon go there on their lunch break and get away from the office.....Lets be real people! Mind your own business....get yer walk/workout on and dont put yer nose and yer opinon in the wrong place!

Jessica O.

Yelp
I live in the area and use the trail daily for dog walks, weekly for runs and bike rides to Golden. You seriously can't get any better...dirt trail and three lakes plus Clear Creek to run around, if you are feeling adventurous you can take the clear creek trail all the way to Golden. I love living nearby

Abby B.

Yelp
First off, I have NEVER had any bad experiences at this park or in the area... never had a problem feeling "safe". We've lived in the area several years and frequently make visits to the park with our dogs (almost weekly). Park backs up to Clear Creek Trail... one of the most beautiful places in town to take walk, bike, or run! You don't even feel like you're in the city - dense trees, the river, and lots of wildlife. Great place to bring the kids! Great playgrounds, ponds/lakes throughout the grounds, with soccer and baseball fields, too. Come experience a peaceful spot for yourself! Don't rely on other opinions alone :)

Yelp
First of all, I would like to address Jamie S. and her one star review of this park. Anytime you are out in nature, it is important to be aware of the dangers involved. This includes wildlife, insects, and poison ivy, etc. It involves being aware of your surroundings. This beautiful park does not deserve one star as a result of your mistake. Not trying to be mean, just stating the facts. That being said, overall I find this is an excellent park for walking my dogs (as long as you stay on the South side of the creek during the warmer months, otherwise you risk getting run over by bikes on the greenbelt). I have been coming to this park a few days a week for about four years now. The majority of regulars are friendly and the landscape and views are beautiful.

Yelp
Great place to go and be in nature. Clear Creek runs thru the park and there are so many lakes/ponds to fish in. It was quite hot when I came to fish, so, they were not biting. It is such a big area, even when the parking lot seems filled with a lot of people, you only see a few at a time and the park almost feels like its all to yourself. I brought my lab, Katie , with me and found a nice "beachy type" landing along the creek where she could easily get in the water and not get swept away. She loves to dive for rocks and she had plenty to dive for there. Very clear water and nice and shady from the hot summer sun. It looks like a very safe park to me, although, there are a few trails that go back into the woods and not sure what/who may or may not be hiding in there. I did not see anyone, so, I assume its pretty safe. Personaly, I am not worried, but, I am 6' tall and weigh 245, so, I guess I don't look to much like an easy target anyway. All I saw were a couple of joggers, bike riders and some families with their kids at the play grounds. All in all,a very beautiful park and I am thankful, Colorado spends lots of money for us to have such great places to visit.

Yelp
I am one of the office people who come here on lunch break or even after work and sit in my car and do a puzzle and enjoy the peacefulness and beauty. My goal is to get off my rear and take a walk. Meanwhile, I was very excited today to see a Mandarin Duck! (looked it up on the internet) and had to let you all know. What a beauty, go check him out (he was on the lake). I also like to check up on the domestic goose. And I guess this is a great place to see baby fox in the spring, on the trails.

Byron L.

Yelp
This place is horrible. There is parking and seating for the baseball field, but what about the football field ? What about us that have physical challenges that can't make it back and forth to the football field to see our kid's play ? We sit in the bleachers 100 yards from the field and can't see a single play.

Zach H.

Yelp
If you enjoy parks overrun with homeless people, this is the place to be in WheatRidge. As far as park itself goes it is always pretty clean and well maintained. Trash has never been an issue and both lower and upper bathrooms are almost always clean. Both playgrounds are safe and well maintained. Overall a beautiful piece of land with alot of nice things to offer including ball fields, a small lake, and some nice scenery. However it isn't a family oriented park anymore and has turned into some sort of free RV park. I wouldn't feel comfortable bringing children and having them potentially be watched or harassed by people living in the park. Its a shame such a nice location is being over run by RV campers that are there 24/7. It's an eye sore now, and I believe if this situation continues to be ignored the park soon will only be appealing to persons living in vehicles. If I lived in an RV I would give Prospect Park 5 stars, free to stay, free trash removal in the form or tax payed city workers, and bathrooms with running water 24 hours a day year round. How the city has let this park become what it is now is beyond me. Something should be done. Just sad.
